It Gets Better Project - Thread

In the past few months there has been a surprising amount of gay teen suicides. The suicides were caused by bullying, lack of support, and loss of hope. The suicides not only caught the attention of a large amount of the American population, but also of a cloumnist and author, Dan Savage. He with his partner, Terry, created a Youtube.com video that launched the "It Gets Better Project", that has since caused hundreds upon thousands of people to not only make inspiring videos on the matter of gay/lesbian/transgender suicide, but also share some of their own stories. Speeches made by celebrities such as Tim Gunn, Kathy Griffin, and even President Obama have launched the project even further.

"Two months later, the It Gets Better Project (TM) has turned into a worldwide movement, inspiring over 5000 user-created videos and over 15 million views. To date, the project has received submissions from celebrities, organizations, activists, politicians and media personalities, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Adam Lambert, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Matthew Morrison of "Glee", Joe Jonas, Joel Madden, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Tim Gunn, Ellen DeGeneres, Suze Orman, the staffs of The Gap, Google and Facebook, the Broadway community, and many more. For us, every video changes a life. It doesn’t matter who makes it." - http://www.itgetsbetter.org/

Wow.. that's a really great thing to do. I love to see people helping other people in similar situations.

I was wondering, on the topic of suicide.. do you know any help sites or movements for people with depression or just suicidal tendencies? I feel that that's also just as prominent as gay suicide and I was just wondering if you had any information on it since you did your research regarding this side of it.

We should all spread the love and tell EVERYONE that things always get better.

I like the idea. I'm not against it. I just want to see it expanded beyond just gay kids/teens. Bullying occurs for a whole multitude of excuses (not reasons), and everyone who is hurt by it needs support. Someone to talk to and listen to them. Someone to tell them that they're not the problem. Bullying and suicide isn't a problem that is only limited to the gay population. It hurts no matter what.

There ARE a lot of websites. I found one for a suicide prevention hotline:
Here
But I wouldn't know of any others. But it's definitely important to let people know that there's ALWAYS hope.

I LOVE this!!! :cer_love: I can't make it through one video without crying. I wished this had happened sooner. Especially during my teen years. I've battled with suicide before and even to this day my depression still haunts me. Thankfully I've been blessed to find people out there who truly know how to love and have supported me in my dark times.

I personally don't know of any specific programs out there, but they do exist out there. Even a simple google search could help anyone find support groups in there community or online. As TRIFORCE89 has stated, bullying and suicide isn't a problem that is only limited to the gay population. I implore to anyone out there who is currently facing this problem to have a little courage and seek help. It's hard...I know, but ultimately it will get better.

Shameless plug, but PC does have a Gay/Straight Alliance. Everyone is welcome. Here's the link.
