Impulsiveness
Impulsive: "tending to act without thought"
People act impulsively for various reasons: their emotions get the best of them, acting on a whim can give some off a feeling of thrill and excitement. But is being impulsive a positive or negative characteristic? Would you consider yourself to be impulsive? Have you had positive or negative experiences because of your impulsiveness/ lack thereof? |
Hell yeah I can be impulsive! But I generally think through what I do before I do it, especially if it involves fighting. I mean, God, I love fighting, but in this day and age, more people are interesting in killing then plain old fighting. Real 'men' are far and few, unfortunately.

But is being impulsive a positive or negative characteristic?
I believe acting on impulse is something that defines a character. Impulse is always the gut reaction and decision of someone, so it really gives you a grasp of understanding. I don't think it's bad, but I don't think it's good. It really depends on the situation. There's quite a few things in life that require you to think thoroughly until you come to an established and mature decision. Some people look at impulsiveness as a sign of immaturity, but I don't think that's the case. I think it's immature for someone to always act on impulse, yes, but being impulsive is not something that's entirely bad. Would you consider yourself to be impulsive? I think everyone has a sense of impulse that can't be ignored in some situations, so I find that everyone is impulsive to an extent. But I do think that I have been less and less impulsive. Have you had positive or negative experiences because of your impulsiveness/ lack thereof? I've had both positive and negative experiences as a result of my (lack of) impulsiveness. Usually when I end up being impulsive in the wrong time, I make stupid and ignorant decisions. I find that if I thought it through more before being so rash, my opinion and decision would have been different on the subject, but at the same time, thinking something through to the point of overanalyzing it isn't at all good, since it's time consuming, distracting, and generally takes longer to accomplish, which is not a good thing at all. |
i'm pretty human; so yes, i take hasty actions every once in awhile without putting as much thought into those actions as i should have. it happens.
there can be negative results to an impulsive decision, although most of the time those results lead to learning. i certainly wouldn't call it a negative characteristic- it is, after all, a common one. only in excess is anything unhealthy. |
I'm very analytical and not very impulsive.. even with shopping.. although I might love a pair of shoes and buy them there on the spot.. I always consider what my funds are, if they'll benefit me, and if they're worth it. It might seem impulsive.. but is in fact just an unexpected buy.

But is being impulsive a positive or negative characteristic?
I say negative sometimes. I'm impulsive all the time and that gets me into good and bad situations.sometimes it causes you to mess up,like when you do a test quickly because you hate the subject, then you fail the test. on the other hand,Its good. Its like getting to the fun quicker. my motto is"do it now or never do it", because of my impulsive attitude. Would you consider yourself to be impulsive? Definitely. (it might help cuz im kind of spazzy.XD)I always want to get things done and do everything NOW. Have you had positive or negative experiences because of your impulsiveness/ lack thereof? positive:you can get to fun quicker.I have had this happen when I work and then I can play video games:)positive for me negative:sometimes causes you to screw up.I hate math, so when I take a test or quiz on it I tend to fail often.which sucks. |
But is being impulsive a positive or negative characteristic?
I think a lot of people like to say it's a negative characteristic, but it's one of those things were I can say it's truly both. Sometimes doing something on a whim ends up with a positive outcome as it's happened to me many times. Would you consider yourself to be impulsive? Most of the time no. I'm the complete opposite of impulsive. I tend to take a minute and think about what I'm going to do. I think I'm a little too self reflective for my own good because always thinking about the possible outcomes sometimes holds me back. Have you had positive or negative experiences because of your impulsiveness/ lack thereof? I've had mostly positive outcomes. I truly believe that there are times when you just have to do something and not think about it. Like I said before often times when you over think or analyze something you can hold yourself back from doing whatever it is that could turn out beneficial. It's one of those chances in life~ |
As an indecisive person, I can appreciate people that are impulsive. Rarely do I ever decide anything on the fly; I have to dither back and forth about everything before making decisions. Sure, being impulsive isn't the best in some situations, but let me tell you, being indecisive isn't the best in some situations either. Sometimes I wish I could just do things without overthinking them. It's just a waste of time. >_<
I have rarely acted on impulse, and it can either turn out good or bad. It all depends on the situation. |
Most of the time, I associate impulsiveness with rudeness, so there are the rare occasions that I act impulsively towards others, though I don't realize it.
|
I always think things out first, no matter the situation.
I know of people who just buy things because they feel like it, or they see it and think it looks cool. I think about ever possible outcome first, so with that example, mainly do I need it and is it a waste of money; most outcomes are it is a waste! |
I'm not generally an impulsive person.
By nature I am logical, rational and analytical. Impulse decisions happen for me about 1% of the time. More often than not, I'm at least 1 step ahead of the game in my head before doing or saying anything. |
I'm not impulsive at all, and sometimes I wish I was a little more so...
I don't think it is a bad trait, in fact, often is it quite useful especially regarding progressing friendships or meeting new people or whatever, but when it comes to like impulsive shopping, that can be bad. My dad is pretty impulsive, only when it comes to him buying stuff, not too good. :P |
There are those moments I feel I'm impulsive, but for the most part, I think I'm rather sound of mind. When it comes to spending, I'm generally very low on funds, so I don't buy things left and right unless I might happen to have a bit more money than usual...even then, it's nothing too big, maybe just a paperback book or something.

But is being impulsive a positive or negative characteristic?
It is neither. It lies quite cutely, neatly and definitely within the gray area. Would you consider yourself to be impulsive? No. Anything that I say or do must traverse a decision making process. At the very least, I attempt to assess how successful will be. I don't waste my intuition on high risk things unless I've first exhausted all possible logical processes. This typically takes less than 150ms...by my best guess. Have you had positive or negative experiences because of your impulsiveness/ lack thereof? Of course! I can easily sit here and curse my careful nature nonstop eleven holy ways from the seventh Sunday of the year 7 A.D. to the present. But doing so would do me no good...even if I had the power to do so. I've had just as many positive experiences too. I could praise my careful nature just as long, if not longer than I'd curse it. |
I'm impulsive at times. Like when I'm around my friends and we're joking around.
|
Most impulsive things in most situation are bad. Like idiots who always want to start a fight, and people who do stupid things at parties and such. It can occasionally be useful, like when you have no time to think, you just have to do. So impulsive decisions are things you need to know how to do.
I am impulsive when it comes to people who get on my nerves. I will tell them off in a heart beat with out thinking. |
I'm usually not impulsive, but every now and then a situation comes up where I do certain things without thinking through first. But usually I like to think about what I plan to do before I go ahead with it.
I've had both good and bad things happen from my various adventures in impulsiveness, and it depends on the situation. |
I'm not impulsive by any means of the word. I don't even like spending money on myself after saving up for something for a long time. I feel weird doing that, so just impulse buying something would feel worse. But on other situations, I'm not impulsive there either. Sex comes to mind here, haha. But for all situations, I tend to think through, or already know, the possible consequences of letting something happen "in the moment," and I don't want to feel that wrath, so I just stay away. But that's not to say that I don't have my impulsive moments. They're just rare.
|
I don't consider myself to be impulsive, though there are situations when I let my emotions slip. When things like these happen, I find myself involuntary, almost like reflex action. I've had a few impulsive moments, most of which I don't remember so vividly, but I regret all of them. I don't consider impulsiveness to be bad however, as some people just let their emotions flow.
|
My actions usually are not impulsive, but the things I say can be... which sometimes gets me in trouble...
