Nostalgia...
Why is it that people [around my age or so] always talk about the "good old days" now? Nostalgia is a concept I am trying to get my head around to [translation: I think it's overrated, IMO].
But that is not the point of this thread, to make a seemingly unpopular opinion on something so cherished by others. The point is that how does it make you feel; what do you think of it? Are we on the same wavelength or do you participate in reminiscing? |
I think it refers to things we've enjoyed as a child that isn't around anymore- such as fully animated cartoons :C.. now we have mostly limited animation..
|
i am a hugely sentimental person and out of the emotions i've experienced i value nostalgia the most. the yearning i feel to relive certain aspects of my life is absolutely intoxicating, and i have an inordinately prominent affection for objects and places and smells that remind me of the past, an affection that is often inspiring and heavily contributes to the aesthetic value i gather from those things.
our perception of the world and the things we've encountered, our lives now as they continue to evolve, our accumulated memories, the chemicals in our bodies- all factors, among many more, that are connected to nostalgia. i wouldn't stick an adjective like "overrated" on a feeling so subjectively valued. i've never heard of nostalgia being a particularly "rated" feeling anyway, can you elaborate on how you came up with that? |
My reason for the summing up the feeling to "overrated" because more than ever, there's been kids [Yes, I dare call teenagers "kids"] who mention things from the 90s ad nausem, and it's been getting tiring.
Ok, so nostalgia is an emotion that I can understand, but it's getting too out of hand. It's too "trendy" now. |

For me, I get nostalgic because I feel things have changed and are changing pretty quickly. The lack of knowledge I had with Pokemon games made the first Pokemon game I played an amazing first experience, and I wish I could go back. Now that I know a lot more about the games than I used to, everything has become more routine and less of a mystery and challenge for me. Another probable reason why people around your age, as you put it, get nostalgic is because they miss how they didn't have many responsibilities. Now a lot of us have to handle college work and try to find a job, which is not too easy at the moment.
Obviously not all is dark and gloomy despite the fact that I was able to have a lot more fun back then, because there are a lot of great things life has to offer. However, I would do mostly anything just to go back to experience everything for the first time again. |
Well nostalgia is a feeling that comes over you once in a while, and then the feeling drifts away...
But I think that a lot of people use it so seem over concerned about something... I mean come on! You're 20! How strong can the nostalgia really be?! |

Nostalgia is just sort of my way of appreciating how simple things used to be. |
Nostalgia is something I feel almost daily... Most games suck nowadays. That's just fact. When I play/think about older games like Pokemon/Banjo Kazooie/etc, I really do feel like I'm remembering 'the good old days,' as you put it.
|
Nostalgia Is something we all feel at times, but I do agree that it is way too popular now,I guess with everything going on people just want things to worry about.[Hate to say it that way but...]I mean even I will admit I think about old memories and such but people take it to such high levels it's sort of scary! But as I used to say as a child,
"You don't know what you've got until it's gone" |
Nostalgia is a big deal for some people, but its far to overrated. People who are obsessed with Nostalgia are just people who want to live a certain part of their lives again, but never will so they visit old memories and try to get Nostalgic.

Sammy misses the good ol' days
Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Labortory, Ed Ed n' Eddy, Two Stupid Dogs all on Cartoon Network *sigh* The good ol' days... |
I'd like to think that everyone reminisces sometimes. Sentimentality on any level is a big part of being human, after all, so to reject the idea of it kind of makes me feel sorry for you. ):
I don't think it can be overrated, either. You can't really like nostalgia or support the idea of it, it's just an emotion as involuntary as feeling happy or sad. It can be really painful for me too, like a sharp, bittersweet sort of feeling, except it's so intense that the sweetness is hardly worth the bitterness. I'm also not sure what you mean when you target our generation. Haven't you ever heard grown men and women in their 50's and 60's ramble on and on about the way things used to be? I'm sorry if I sound like I'm singling you out, I'm just confused as to how you seem to think nostalgia is some sort of fad when all it is is a human emotion. |
I know it may be hard for some to wrap around the concept of nostalgia, I could tell you what it is, but it's already been posted.
Anyhow, I don't find nostalgia over-rated at all, it is a link to the past for most people, an oppurtunity to look back at the better days, with the current science (or lack thereof), it's all we have. |
I think I have come up with a solution with obsessively-nostalgic people. But it involves an apparatus that has not been invented yet. =|

To reminisce about the better times/past is a fundamental human trait, no it's not "overrated" Wondering about the alternatives, how things could have been, etc, is something we all do, and we've always done it. |
Good old Nostalgia. (Hey, what's the opposite of an oxymoron?)
Nostalgia's a powerful thing. It's the reason I bought Pokémon Soul Silver, it's the reason I still own my original copy of FFVII on PS1, despite never playing on my Playstation, let alone the game and it's the reason I (and most of my generation) went to see Toy Story 3 (seriously, for a kids film, a lot of 16+ year olds went to see it). |
To me, nostalgia means reminiscing in your past memories. Back then, I didn't really know what it was.
|
It's because we miss old times, it can cheer us up to reminisce on what once was. Like the first time I whacked off... that was AMAZING..
|
Because the good ol' things that happened in the past can't happen again. We should get over our nostalgia or else you'll get stuck and never grow up - mentally. We may reach old age but at least we experienced those good old days instead of bad old days. Heck someone should invent time machine now.
|
The feeling of Nostalgia is impossible to describe, but i'll try. It's kind of like an orgasm, or Zen. But it's also a yearning for it back, so it also hurts sentimentally. People from the 80's, and 90's love this lol.
Here is a description from wikipedia: "Nostalgia is often triggered by something reminding the individual of an event or item from their past. The resulting emotion can vary from happiness to sorrow. The term of "feeling nostalgic" is more commonly used to describe pleasurable emotions associated with and/or a longing to go back to a particular period of time." |

I definitely miss the good old days.
Buick Electra, Buick Roadmaster, Buick Century, Buick Riviera, Buick Skylark, and of course the much beloved LeSabre. At least the Regal's making a comeback. Oh, and music from the '80's up through about '93 pwns the music of today. I get to experience that type of nostalgia every time I boot up my MP3 player, though. I really don't have too much nostalgia for old TV shows, though. That part of my life is sort of a blur. But I do feel nostalgic for the days when I was good at math and school in general, before it got insanely difficult xD |
