General Pixel Art Discussion Thread
IntroductionSo I decided the spriter's showcase thread was basically a forum for criticism on scratch sprites. This thread is to discuss about pixel art in general, styles, tools, references, etc. There are some rules you'll need to follow however. RulesAll Pokécommunity rules apply. Showcasing Please don't showcase sprites here, this is a discussion thread. If you would like to showcase your sprite(s), post it in the Spriter's Showcase thread or create your own showcase thread if you have four scratch sprites to showcase. Topic Stay on topic, if you would like to bring up another topic then do so but include a response to the previous topic. Help If you need help regarding tools, terminology or have a question including those topics, feel free to post. Asking for constructive criticism for your sprites in this thread is prohibited. Such posts will be deleted. Advertising Like the general Pokécommunity rules, don't advertise websites including other forums. You are not allowed to advertise your shop or sprites as well. Spamming Just don't spam. It's that simple. Such posts will be deleted. ): That's pretty much it, if you have any concerns, questions or suggestions please contact Logiedan. Starting Topic: What program do you spriters use for your pixel art? |
pixels r cool
Also I alternate between Paint.NET and Photoshop depending on whether I need to specify a set palette or need animation functionality. |
I used to use MS Paint but the recent upgrade of it from Windows 7 drawn me away. Now I just use Photoshop for my pixel art and animations, though I do want more tools or features that support pixel art. ):
|
Generally I like to use good ol' MS Paint to do a lot of my initial work and then use Photoshop for fine tuning, playing with colors, and for animation and transparency.
I hate the latest version of paint. |
I use paint. At first the Windows 7 paint seemed like the worst thing in the world, but it's not that bad.
|
I used to hate the Windows 7 Paint. But now I'm so used to it, that I don't even use the old Paint anymore.
|
I guess it is easy to get use to, but I dislike the cropping and the rectangular marquee tool now. It makes it more complicated for fusing. :/
|
Yeah, I thought the same thing. But like I said, it just takes some time getting used to.
|
I use MS Paint... The good 'ol XP version. Which as far as I know is essentially unchanged from the good 'ol Win98 version. For my "Paint can't do that" needs I use Paint Shop Pro, and for animation, Animation Shop. Everything related to the spriting itself I do in Paint though. :D
|
Too bad MS Paint doesn't support transparency. If they supported transparency then I think MS Paint will be the best tool for the basics of Pixel Art.
|
Well, transparency is a purely aesthetic thing for displaying your sprites... Almost any program a sprite would actually be used in would use one of the colors present in the image as the transparent one. I can't deny that I like to post my sprites to forums as transparent though, especially when they have a non-white background color.
|
I guess, but I also think it's alright to post sprites with a white background. The white background lets you see the pixels better rather than for example someone using a dark theme, the black outline clashes with the dark theme colours.
|
I use Windows XP's MS Paint with Vista's graphics, barring the default palette which is seemingly unchangeable. Whenever I try with things like PS, GIMP, GG etc. I just don't feel as comfortable. :/ I do, however, use GIMP for transperent-ing my sprites, after going around the outline in white on Paint.
|
Actually, something that hasn't been mentioned yet is layers. While I prefer Paint, and find its environment easiest to work with, layered images probably simplify a lot of things in the spriting process.
|
that's the main reason i can't use paint.
e: that and the lack of quick colour replacement, better resizing and oh **** it |
I don't really use any of that... Not for spriting, at least. I like to do everything manually, pixel-by-pixel for most of it.
...Unrelated to the topic at hand, but does it seem to anyone else that Pokemonatoms has decided that I'm the only one on his side, despite the fact that I'm saying the same thing as everyone else? Back on topic again, I've heard a lot of people mention Paint.net lately. Is that an in-browser image editor or something? |
To be honest, I think Pokemonatoms is ignoring all of your criticism. He hasn't even tried the popular suggestion to work with official sprites and play around with them seeing as he went off and did a Ghost fakemon.
Anyways..Paint.NET is actually a program similar to GIMP. I never used it before for graphics or pixel art, so I'm not very experienced or familiar with the program. (You manually recolour a sprite, pixel by pixel? o__o) |
It has the odd quirk I would prefer to behave more like Photoshop (Colour Picker tool only works on the active layer, anything moved outside of the canvas gets chopped off and there doesn't appear to be an easy way to flip or rotate a selection of pixels by 90/180 degrees) but it's useful for when I want a smaller and quicker program instead of loading up PS.
It's also got less design flaws than Graphics Gale (bad layer behavior pretty much cripples the animation functionality once you start adding lots of frames.) |
Quote:
...Then I'll usually need to pick a palette for a different part of the sprite. |
I use to use that erasing trick. xD
But like I said, I gave up on MS Paint. |
Okay, this is actually a sticky...and a good one. So why not as well raise a new topic about fellow Pixel Artists:
Do you find it hard to draw something that doesn't relate to the bead color palette? |
the what colour palette .
|
Okay, beaver. In other words, is it easy for you to Pixel Art with the predefined colours by Paint/PS, etc?
|
I never bothered with Photoshop's deafult swatches.
If I wasn't working off the colours of an existing sprite I just go straight into picking a custom colour and working off there for shading and hues. |
I'm still not sure if I understand what you're talking about,
but in terms of pallets I'm really bad about not starting with one, when apparently I should be. I just sorta pick out colors. I need to learn to unify them more. |
I actually use the default colors as a tool; I'll draw in bright red and blue, and not use any final colors until all of the linework is done.
|
I start off with black and white and add color, usually a preset color, to help me define shapes better. Most of the time I use 2 or so different shades for contrast and then change them to something which looks better once I have enough detail going.
|
I use a couple of colours for my linework to help seperate the pieces and anatomy. Mainly i'll use black and red.
|
Sometimes, if I'm sprting an evolution or pre-evolution, I'll just use the colours from their respective pr/evolutions. If it's a pure scratch, I'll probably start off with default colours as placeholders, and I, like Logiedan, may use different default colours to separate clashing parts of anatomy, temporarily.
|
I like to use a different colour from evolutions because that usually happens in evolutions. I'll most likely saturate it a bit or so.
|

|
I use brighter colors for my starting lines in Paint. Pink and blue are very easy for me to see and work with. I use the circle shape tool to help me with primitive anatomy, like where the head should go, etc. I make my own palettes almost all the time, and then recolor with the eraser if necessary.

Hey guys! Sorry for being mildly off-topic and advertising but you all know me, and this seemed like a much better place than the usual thread because hey, it's about pixel art but not about critiquing and recieving crit (mostly). It's pocket spriter time again!
Pocket Spriter #7: Trials and Pixelations Newcomers and oldcomers all, welcome to the newest episode of the eagerly-anticipated Pocket Spriter! Today, we rejoin our heroes Seika and Twitch as they grapple with challenges such as overcoming artblock and dealing with thousands of screaming fans who all want requests and commissions and concrit. Exciting! You, the viewer, can join in on the talking fun if you have skype, or simply via the chat if you do not. The stream will start at 5PM EST on Wednesday, December 29, an earlier start time to accommodate those in other timezones. Panels are as follows: Hosted by Twitch: 5-8PM Circuitry Tips: Designing and spriting electric-type fakemon No Regrets: Reviewing and improving on old designs Sprite Critique: We take a closer look at viewer-submitted sprites and might actually resprite a few. Hosted by Seika: 8PM-Happy hour Hieros Gamos: It's not pokemon, but it -is- a neat pokemonesque game. We'll take a closer look at the alternative style of Seika's creations. Sprite Requests: Viewers request a design or idea to be sprited. Happy Hour: par-tayyyy As always, the link to the channel is http://www.livestream.com/pocketspriter ! You don't need to be registered on livestream or anything. Just drop on by, and tell your friends! Copypasta aside, and to make this post relevant: it depends on the sprite I'm working on, but generally I either just sketch the outline in black right then and there and refine it, or if it's especially complicated I make a rough sketch in a light color and go over it in black. I don't generally agonize over the sketching stage with different parts as different colors, unless it's a particularly difficult scratch. |
I can't do any spriting right now because I'm in the unfortunate phase between an old PC with Paint and a new Mac with Photoshop (one of these days I'm gonna get a tablet...), but when I did sprite on Paint, I always used the base colors as a, well, basis, and then fiddled around with the colors until I found one appropriate for the sprite. Or I just eyedropped it from the reference artwork. Otherwise, I only ever use those default colors for sketch linework or funky backgrounds for turning it transparent (thanks, Iaza!).
|
Personally I like photoshop since it supports layer.
This is really handy when you are trying to scratch sprite. XP MS paint is really great but I just wish there was some shortkeys for like the pencil and eraser tool ( or is there?). |
Yeah, the layer thing does help. Sometimes I need to test what some things need to look like so I use the layers. I think I mentioned this multiple times but I only use PS because W7 Paint suuuuckkss. D:
|
I use paint, the old school version!
It's just, the ultimate pixel art tool, kinda. |
I use Paint.NET. It's just like photoshop, with that good ol' MSpaint feel. It supports layers and transparency, plus I use it for all my graphics, and I'm to lazy to use 2 different programs, so yeah.
|
yeah i explained my reasons for using Paint.NET most of the time in the second post
|
At school when I mostly scratch I use the XP Paint (Since thats all it has)
At home, when I fuse, I mostly use win 7 paint, I gotten used to it. Its not too bad, I just dont use all that fancy stuff as the drawing stuff? When I inset tiles I used both. The only thing win 7 can change is the index thing xp had? and right click the other set color. |
Quote:
Friends had experience. |
I'm mostly using Paint, it's great program for spriting. Sometimes I use Paint.Net, mostly to add transparency.
I have question - what's difference between Splice and Fusion? |
Fusing, splicing and "Frankensteining" are all umbrella terms for making sprites out of parts from existing sprites, but they also carry different connotations. While any of them can be used to refer to any combination of sprite parts, each technically has its own meaning. Don't worry, most people use the terms interchangeably enough that only a handful use them "correctly" these days. As they were originally used, the terms are as follows:
Fusion: A roughly equal mix of two (largely unedited) sprites, such as a Gardevoir with a Koffing in place of its head. Also known as a Hybrid. In the last two years or so, Fusion has come to mean two Pokemon combined into one, like Skitty given Turtwig's palette and shell. Apparently Dragon Ball Z is involved somehow. Splice: Two or more sprites nicely integrated, such as a Lucario with Mewtwo's belly and tail, Dialga's chest jewel thing, and Palkia's wings. May be recolored. Frankenstein: Multiple parts combined to create an original creature, usually with edited and recolored parts to hide their origin. Also known as an Amalgamon. |
RE: The outlining discussion -
I usually do all of my outlines in the default paint colours, recolour them all to black, add basic colouring, add details like eyes and such, and then shade. |
Thread save!
Why would you need to use the default colours if the step right after that is to recolour all of them to black? :c |
Question: How long do you take to do a recolor?
I have started spriting for leisure some time ago and it took me a while to get to the hang of spriting. So I want to ask you guys: how long do you ususally take to do a recolor and what do you do to do a recolor quickly?
|
It depends on the program really, it takes quite a small amount of time once you figure out your palette and colours.
|
Quote:
|
but shouldn't you fill them in and colour it before you make the whole outline black?
|
oh my god is she still doing this doesn't she realize advertising is against the rules and that nobody cares about her silly spriting livestream
...Yeah, well, anyway! Offtopic posts abound because there is another pocket spriter coming up, and I haven't been told off for posting here before so I see no reason to stop. And I know that at least one of you is going to notice and maybe show up, and in that case, mission accomplished. Anyway. Pocket Spriter #8: Pokemon Black and Sprite! Now with worse puns! We return to the scene of the crime with intrepid reporterspriters Zephyr+/Involuntary Twitch and Seika! It's a grisly scene: Pokemon fans and wanna be spriters alike, sprawled in uncomfortable positions, their fingers still clenched around their Nintendo DSes where, only an hour or so ago, the sheer elation of finally being able to play Pokemon Black and White caused massive cranial hemorrhaging. It's quite a shame, really, but who cares it's time for Pocket Spriter!!! Coinciding with the North American release date of Pokemon B/W, we bring you the latest installment of the Pocket Spriter livestream! As usual, we will be talking at great length about the do's and dont's of fakemon spriting, while entertaining viewer suggestions, answering questions, and inviting anyone who has Skype to join in! It's going to be at 5:00PM EST on Sunday, March 6th, so grab your DS and let's gooooooo! Panels are as follows (EDIT: due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be switching the times of the panels, so Seika will be going from 5-7:30 and Twitch will be going from 7:30-happy hour.) : Hosted by Seika: 5:00-7:30 Make it move!: We take a look at how to animate fakemon like in B/W! Fakedex Primer: What goes into a fakedex? How do you ensure balance and diversity? We'll make several linearts and flat-colored sprites in this block! Hosted by Twitch: 7:30-10:00 & Happy Hour 15 years of style: We look back on how Pokemon sprite style has changed over the years, and sprite something in B/W style! Beekeeping tips: Another one of our _____ tips panels; this time, we'll bee looking at the diverse and very awesome bug type! Sprite critique: A recurring favorite; we'll take a look at viewer submitted sprites and suggest improvements. Happy Hour: par-tayyyyy (or go to bed early because tomorrow's Monday, after all) As always, the link to the stream is here: http://www.livestream.com/pocketspriter! Make sure to drop by (you don't need to register for anything), and tell your friends! |
Is it okay to get a pokemon sprite and then edit off it or should make it from scratch?
Are you supposed to only showcase scratch sprites? |
Quote:
|
You don't ONLY have to showcase scratch sprites, you can post a couple of them in your thread including your fusions, devamps, etc.
|
Any good Spriting programs? XD
Hi everyone, I wanted to make a start on making Pokemon emoticons (sprites) but don't know where to start. ^^'
Any suggestions on what program/tool I sould use? Thanks! X3 |
MS Paint, Paint.NET, Photoshop and GraphicsGale are some, though most use Paint.
|
Right... Thanks! =D
Any more suggestions? Which one is the best for editing Sprites? |
I personally use MS Paint and Photoshop but mostly paint. Since your just starting I suggest you use Paint - It's where I started and where a lot of people start as well
|
Thank you~ XD
But sin't Paint hard to edit Pixels? ^^' |
To be honest it's not hard to edit Pixels if you were editing or making sprites. If you were editing a big picture which has a variety of pixels then it would be a bit harder
|
^^ Thanks!
Can I blow up the sprite in paint? Sorry I'm a Noob in paint |
Yes, by using the magnifying glass and clicking 8x, or scrolling up, depending on whether or not your on XP/pre-XP or Vista/post-XP, respectively.
|
It's easy to edit sprites with Paint, in my opinion. Especially if you're just doing a recolor.
Also, whatever you do, DO NOT save your sprites as jpeg. It ruins the quality. |
Merged Pikachewy's thread with the General Pixel Art Discussion thread.
|
O.o So much tools & suggestions... Thanks evryone!
Yes I found that MS Paint is a good one~ =D |
Quote:
Experimentation is how I learned, and comparing my first sprites to my last... I'm even shocked. |
I love ms paint for the basic structure of the pokemon,
but I switch to gimp for colouring. I really suck at shading, and lately I've been adding opaque layers of black to add shading. does anyone else do that? because I think it's a weird method :/ |
A few questions and opinions about spriting
Hi guys,
I would have some questions about spriting, hope you can help to answer my curiosities. 1. Do you usually use Microsoft Paint, or do you use other image editing programmes as well, like Adobe Photoshop and GIMP? 2. Usually, what are the ages of spriters and are they usually gamers? 3. Other than Pokemon, what games are common targets for spriters? 4. What do you think is the most popular form of spriting? (Recolors, splicing, scratches etc.) |
1) I use Photoshop for anything involving animation but Paint.NET is also fine if don't have PS handy and don't need to animate a sprite.
2) I am 19 and have great interest in fighting games and the 2D art and animation that go into then. 3) Fighting games and other arcade genres such as side-scrolling shooters and brawlers are often targeted, due to being popular during the pinnacle of 2D games and the golden age of sprites in general. Meanwhile Sonic the Hedgehog sprites are popular for people to make poorly drawn fursonas out of. 4) Recolours and Fusions are the most popular because almost anyone can crank them out regardless of skill level. |
Moving thread to the one for questions.
Let's hope nothing screws up. |

I got a Question. I've been expanding out of OW sprites and into other areas, like Trainer Sprites, VS Sprites, actual Pokemon. So yeah, to my question. OW Sprites can pretty much be made Pixel by Pixel, while those others, as I see it, can't. You have to make the outline, and that's very hard to, well for me anyway.
What I've been doing as of now is drawing an outline, scanning it in, and then treating it as a pixel over. I also have a tablet and have been thinking about using that instead ... Any idea how well a tablet works in MS Paint (or any other free, similar program)? |
That's the process used in most professional sprite production (Including our very own overworked artists at Game Freak!), and how I produce sprites.
MS Paint doesn't have much of the tools necessary to be able to draw well using a tablet. You're better off looking at more feature-filled programs such as Paint.NET and GIMP, which while not expressively designed for graphics tablets feature layering, adjustable brush size/anti-alias and better quality image resizing which will suffice for drawing outlines and basic detail before shrinking the image down. |
Has anyone?
Has anyone created a fakedex full of original amalgamons? (originals made from the parts of existing mon's so we all know what i'm talking about) Hah.
I searched but got nothing hah. And if not what would everyone think if someone were to create one and use it for a hack? Obviously they'd be beyond recognition of their original parts. The lazy persons path to spriting :P |
Quote:
Amalgamations are a pretty unique way to creating fakemon. The only thing I would like if someone were to create an amalgamon is if they didn't allow a person to recognize which parts they used from official sprites. |
Sorry for making useless threads hah.
I was just thinking because I'm fairly decent at taking small parts of official sprites and blending quite a few of them together to make something unrecognisable, I just wanted to know if people would be into that or is it 'cheating'? |
Well, I myself sometimes cheat and use original Pokémon sprites for bases for things such as claws and feet which I suck at drawing, but yeah, normally I manage to disguise it pretty well. For all we know, some really convincing fakedexes may be made of amalgamons, but people tend not to admit it as it seems more "professional" if you say it's scratch or whatever.
|
I'd like to say it's the exact opposite of professional, but there's always artists in one medium or another that can be defined as 'professionals' who try to get away with selling work that has been directly traced and copied from other sources.
|
ms paint and photoshop does the job
|
Where would I post if I just want to post one sprite? I'm having some trouble finishing it and I don't know what to do xD

Guys, I need some advice. I'm spriting for CaP2 on Smogon, and I've asked for advice on which shiny to use, but I've gotten basically no feedback. So i come to you guys, which i just in this instance remembered you guys being spriters.

It's that time of month again! I haven't been told off yet, so, without further ado (crossposted from deviantart and everywhere else):
Pocket Spriter #10: A Long Day's Journey Into Sprite! Back after a long hiatus! Today is a very special day. The kind of day that only rolls around once a year. 49 years ago today, this planet was graced by the presence of one of the greatest men ever born. Ruggedly handsome, with peerless acting skills, he took hollywood by storm. They never saw him coming. He came to steal the Declaration of Independence, but he ended up stealing our hearts instead. I am talking, of course, about Nicolas Cage. There's also Pocket Spriter tonight I guess. For those in the dark: Pocket Spriter is a spriting tutorial livestream, where Seika and Twitch (me!) talk for hours about pixels on a screen, and occasionally about other dumb stuff like homestuck or Nicolas Cage. We make total idiots of ourselves and laugh at our own jokes. Sometimes we take requests. It's really fun! We decided to make today opposite day! So Twitch will take Seika's usual panels and vice versa. It might be really fun or it might be a huge mess! Who knows? I certainly don't! Panels are as follows. Times are EST: 6:00 - Combat Tips - Hosted by Seika Fighting-types: confusing! Diverse! Under-represented! In this panel, Seika tackles the roughest, toughest type! 6:45 - Sprite Critique - Hosted by Seika An old favorite panel, and one that requires audience participation! Users will submit their sprites for Seika to take a gander at and edit them to tell you what you could do better. 7:30 - It's All Greek To Me - Hosted by Twitch Mythology is a great way to get inspiration for cool, creative Fakemon! Twitch will take user suggestions and make a fakemon up on the spot, just for you. 8:15 - Digitaru Monsutaa - Hosted by Twitch Wait, I thought this was a Pokemon livestream?! Twitch sprites some digimon, in Digimon World Dusk/Dawn-style. 9:00 - Hieros Gamos - Hosted by Twitch In true Opposite Day fashion, Twitch sprites some wacky monsters for Seika's game, Hieros Gamos! They all look very cool. 9:45 - Happy Hour - Hosted by Seika In which we all get drunk and party. That, or sit around talking at our computers like dorks, and maybe play a multiplayer online game with our audience. Come for ten minutes or come for ten hours; for as long as you can stop by, we'd love to see you! Heck, you might get a free request out of it, even! Again, the link to the stream is here: http://www.livestream.com/pocketspriter. You don't need to register or anything! Just stop by and comment creepily about how nice our voices sound. If you have skype, you can even join in! It is all going to be really fun. That's all. Also Gavin (Abnegation) will probably be there, at least for the beginning, so you can ask him things about tiles and stuff. |
Question: How many people here have done sprites that use characters from Valve games? eg. TF2, L4D, Half-Life.
|
Quote:
|
Why do you guys make fakemon? Is there a point in it that I should know about?
|
Quote:
It can be fun in a way seeing concepts, ideas and full sprites posted on the internet. Something like Fakémon is even better, as you made it yourself. Tl;dr, it's a fun hobby. |
The Pixel Art Contest Discussion Thread has been closed. The activity over there is rather low, so all future discussions regarding the WPC and Pixel Art Duels can be made here.
You can also make suggestions and give some input about the contests. |
To be honest I think that that theme was just really tough, especially for us newer spriters :P I was extremely put off by that because anything I entered with would in no way shape or form resemble a pixel art scene ;)
I reckon when activity is low, the competitions really need to be fun orientated so more people enter? Iunno maybe sprite a new emoticon for PC? |
Quote:
But about WPC #18's theme, it was more directed to experienced and intermediate pixel artists. I felt as if they had become bored of Pokemon and Fakemon themes, reposes and whatnot over and over. So this was kind of an experimental theme, and I guess the results show that the PA community in PC is more comfortable with strictly Pokemon and relatives. |
I would've drawn some **** if i wasn't like busy with real things. Almost nobody does backgrounds because woah i just spent all my time on my super special self insert character or fakemon dude do you expect me to draw and colour a whole landscape that resembles a real thing
|
It would have been better either being a scene or a character. Being both kind of turned me off.

649 Old Style Sprites
About a year ago, this started popping up around the Interwebs. I was wondering if anyone knew the original creator of this collection? I would like to get a hold of them.
Quite some great work. You should check it out if you haven't already. I understand that this isn't my own work but I figure posting a thread about it might be the best way to find the author, or someone with connections to the author. |
Have you tried to reverse search the image through google or used tinyeye? (In class right now, I can try searching for you when I get back.)
|
^ that should be TinEye, but yeah you can try those however they usually don't give sources like deviantArt or stuff like that where it would be showcased by the artist.
|
I've used Google Image Reverse search and it sent me to nothing but a bunch of reposts, unfortunately. I was hoping for a DeviantART page or something of the like.
TinEye didn't help either - it just linked me to a bunch of Japanese Pokemon blogs. I didn't consider the possibility of the author being Japanese, but judging by the 4chan Fakemon Tentaquil (the weird thing that comes after Genesect), the author probably speaks English. Oh well, thanks for the help guys. Please if anyone knows the author, message me. |
Ahhh, its something to do with Sydian I think? I remember on the sprite discussions thread someone posting this image and mentioned making it using Sydian's device... but I have no idea what this is.
I'm possibly no help atall lol, but its worth a shot :] |
