UK

Just out of curiosity, I thought I'd ask people's opinion on the UK as Jolene (irc) did for the USA.

So what do you think of old Blighty? (And Ireland)

I love it here. It's a lot more liberal than the US for starters.
I would like to live abroad, maybe in Canada for a while when I'm older though.

HeyMikey December 7th, 2010 11:39 AM

inb4 disgustingly wrong stereotypes.

Anyway, I live in England and I absolutely love it, as I do Ireland, being half Irish also. Although the price of stuff sucks. :v

Uecil December 7th, 2010 11:42 AM

I live in the UK and I practically love it here :D
the only things I'm a bit negative on is the prices.

Livewire December 7th, 2010 11:52 AM

Being an educated American, I realize the importance of the UK to our country, seeing as the U.S. doesn't exist without England. I'm not too familiar with the Governmental policies as of late, but It does seem that their government operates smoother, and trivial things don't bother them as much as it would in the American political system. And it does lean to the left on some things, which I identify with.

Being of English and Irish heritage myself, I'd love to get a chance to go to Britain and immerse myself in the culture and History there. Plenty of important places to visit- like Stonehenge, the Parliament Building, Big Ben, Buckingham Palce, etc.

Jolene December 7th, 2010 3:35 PM

I like the UK because Ireland is where fairies originate from.

Headfirst For Halos December 7th, 2010 7:22 PM

Maybe I'd like them more if they stop calling us Americans fat, lazy pigs. Otherwise, I'm neutral.

This. I mean, not that I'm not, but not all Americans are.

I hope you realize that's a generalization, and you're matching that one generalization with another. :/ It's not indicative of the English's view on Americans, and the same can be said of the opposite side of the argument.

There are people who insult Americans in every country, even your own. Don't generalize people based on a generalization they might not even make...

...generalize...

There are people who generalize in America about us too, so don't feel hard done by.

I live in the UK and have since I was born. Love it and that it is. Shame about the weather at times/most of the time. -___-'

FreakyLocz14 December 8th, 2010 12:42 AM

It would be nice to visit the UK; but I value my freedom of speech rights too much to live there.

Uhhh, what?
Since when did the UK not have freedom of speech?

Here's a prime example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech_laws_in_the_United_Kingdom

"On 20 April 2010, police arrested Dale McAlpine, a Christian preacher, of Workington in Cumbria, for saying that homosexual conduct was a sin." Just wow....

So you don't want to come to the UK because you can't be racist? That isn't against freedom of speech, that is just being kind to another human being.

Perriechu December 8th, 2010 1:02 AM

I live in the UK, and I do enjoy it, although I wish I could live in a different area than were I am now :)

I've never been to Ireland :o I would love to, because their accents are just so dreamy ~

If they arrest people for something as simple as expressing an opinion that is held by most world religions, imagine what would happen to someone who slipped and told a little off-color joke.

Surely you can see what a chilling effect these laws cause.

And I also wouldn't live in the UK because taxes are way too high and the weather is too cold and rainy for my liking.

PlatinumDude December 8th, 2010 1:18 AM

I haven't gone to the UK, but like Live_Wire said, the US wouldn't exist without it; some Brits came to the Americas a long time ago and colonized it.

As for my opinion on it, it feels different when compared to the US because of the way people say things or do things, i.e. spelling words differently such as color/colour, as well as driving on different sides of the road.

You aren't arrested on the spot.
Just don't be stupid enough to say it in front of the police.

Rogue planet December 8th, 2010 5:28 AM

I like the fact that we have the NHS, and that there aren't as many pushy religious fanatics as there are in the USA. Although, instead we just have people who are equally intolerant and obnoxious, they just don't use religion as an excuse.
Apart from that, I'm no big fan.

MichaelDj54 December 8th, 2010 5:38 AM

I visit the UK occasionally (I'm US born), and I love it here. The people are nice enough and while it's a wee bit different, I still like it here. Hell, i'm here right now.

All of the best writers come from the UK.

Cutting down on Racism and Hatred is bad thing? Freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say whatever you'd please- it has limitations, no matter where you go, and more people from the US need to realize that. Curbing religious zealotry isn't that bad, and it makes sense with the secular society England and Europe maintains.

You really think racism and sexism can be justified by the fact it's an opinion commonly held by religious people?
Besides it's not as if simply making a prejudiced comment would get you arrested anyway, it's for serious hatred or insult.

As far "off colour jokes" go, jokes are not intended to harass or distress and so are not offences. If they were Frankie Boyle would have the death penalty by now.

You clearly didn't even research the example you gave, as in the the very page you posted it says:
Quote:

On 20 April 2010, police arrested Dale McAlpine, a Christian preacher, of Workington in Cumbria, for saying that homosexual conduct was a sin. On 14 May 2010, the Crown decided not to prosecute McAlpine.

UK television is so much better. Here in the US we have dumbed down predictible plots and dumbed down humor for the dumbed down audience.

As for the politics of the UK I dont see how it can be much worse than the US... In the US debate consists of partisan bickering.
