Sexism

As you may or may not know, this year Sexism has become less of a discrimiatory comment against people based on their gender, but merely a joke used in common day. With the most common "jokes" being someone telling a girl to either get into the kitchen, or to make them a sandwich. There may be other comments, but these would be the two most common ones.

So what are your views on sexism? Do you use it often to really discriminate and prejudice against the opposite gender, or as a joke between your friends, or are you against it all the way?

Discuss.

KanadeTenshi December 11th, 2010 5:25 AM

It's a dying concept and I don't care.

And with that, I shall return to the kitchen.

I Laugh at your Misfortune! December 11th, 2010 5:37 AM

Jokes about going to the kitchen are only as offensive as the listener makes them. When I tell my friend to go make me a sandwich, she tells me to go put up a shelf. No one is offended and good times are had by all.

Simples.

Captain Fabio December 11th, 2010 7:55 AM

Sexism has been around for a long time had hasn't just boomed in the last year.

I might joke about saying it with my friends but I would never even hint at a sexist joke around another woman.

Timbjerr December 11th, 2010 7:56 AM

"women belong in kitchen" jokes are just as common amongst my group of friends as other 4chan staples such as "Black people love KFC" jokes. I think it's just my generation. Racism/sexism had all but disappeared from the mainstream by the time I was in kindergarten, so it becomes natural for us to joke about it because we don't fully realize how terribly violent such discrimination was in the past.

Banksy December 11th, 2010 8:25 AM

In this day of age, you can't offend people with sexism anymore, it's all taken too lightly.
Racism and discrimination of sexuality is still very alive and kicking.

Corvus of the Black Night December 11th, 2010 10:01 AM

I usually only get offended by sexist comments if they're used in a condescending manner, for example, being called "ma'am" by an irate peer.

It's still there and I bet it will always be there, but of course, I don't necessarily think it's right. As long as I get equal pay for equal work I'm all good.

Them Bones December 11th, 2010 10:11 AM

I don't really care if people discriminate genders, or races. What they say or do in their own time is their business, and they have the right to say, or do. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't like it if I was called stupid for being white or a boy, just as anybody else, but it isn't my business what other people think or say.

Rich Boy Rob December 11th, 2010 12:27 PM

Of course real sexism is bad, but it's not very common nowadays. Everyone likes telling female friends to make a sammich every now and then though XD

Dr. Montague December 11th, 2010 12:37 PM

My friends and I just joke about it, and the ones I do are usually girls xD

But yeah, it's not as common nowadays. Still existing, but less prevalent. I don't agree with sexism anyways. A person's pay should not depend on something like gender (or race for that matter).

Sydian December 11th, 2010 1:10 PM

I'm not offended by it, and neither are any of my other friends. No one honestly cares about kitchen/sammich jokes here. I've yet to meet someone that goes diva and storms off about it.

As for sexism as a whole, no I don't agree with it, but it's one of those discriminatory things that will never disappear unfortunately.

otaku-dono December 11th, 2010 2:31 PM

Really hope this gets pushed out the window asap as it's pointless. It just shows that people hate for the sake of hating more often than you may think.

Headfirst For Halos December 11th, 2010 3:27 PM

It used to bother me, but now it doesn't. When a guy I know says "Go back to the kitchen and make me a sammich", I laugh and say "Fix my TV first" or something of that sort.
As long as it's done in a light-hearted manner [aka not in a demeaning way] no one should be offended. Of course, we live in an imperfect world and some women take it seriously.
I don't think sexism is that prevalent anymore anyways.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire December 11th, 2010 3:34 PM

I agree in equality of both genders, I don't like it when guys say "man are stronger than woman" I think that we guys are equal to gals in almost everyway, with some exceptions here and there but those are biological exceptions (giving birth, etc.)

Muffin™ December 11th, 2010 6:07 PM

Look at this. Society nowadays is messed up.

Alternative December 11th, 2010 6:55 PM

I guess it has elevated to being a joke now. I have used it myself within groups of friends, but I would never use it in a serious tone at a woman.

Kura December 11th, 2010 7:08 PM

Everything can be considered sexist nowadays.. but I think it has more to do with opportunities and stereotypes than the whole slur of jokes that come along with it.
If you are genuinely denied a job opportunity due to the sole reason that you're a man or a woman, then that's considered both sexist and illegal.
As for the jokes, you tend to see them anywhere and I just take them lightheartedly. They're effective jokes mostly because they are ridiculous and based on extremists..

Take this for example:

Just some silly fun and games.

Guillermo December 11th, 2010 10:00 PM

personally i find most sexist jokes absolutely hilarious, haha

Eliminator Jr. December 12th, 2010 12:21 AM

I'm not sexist and I don't like most sexism as a concept. What's more annoying is when women get super-sensitive about being discriminated against and start hating men. Some sexism is okay, for example in a joke when it's not really taken seriously, or like if you're holding a door open for a girl when you wouldn't do it for a guy just because it's the done thing.

Cruelty And The Beast December 12th, 2010 5:56 AM

Sexism, racism, homophobia - they're all just ugly forms of collectivism, we don't get our rights or our identity from the fact that we're white/black, male/female, gay/straight; we are all individuals with our own character and our own aspirations, weaknesses, preferences etc. I don't mind it when people make a harmless joke about gender or whatever it is, but the problem is when people start to see these things as fundamental divisions in society as opposed to incidental differences, just a thought.

Lol, my mum always bought me legoes regardless. lmfao

Don't let the toy companies tell you what to play with as I always say...

Esper December 12th, 2010 3:10 PM

Huh. Everyone seems to think that sexism doesn't exist or is disappearing. I'm not sure if I should hopeful for the future because we won't be perpetuating such stupidity as sexism or worried that no one is taking it seriously and letting people get away with it in the guise of humor.

Goodness gracious, we wouldn't want to take something like sexism seriously.

You forgot the part about turning into militant lesbians.

Corvus of the Black Night December 12th, 2010 3:54 PM

I think it's more along the lines of "It exists but I don't care". Sure it's wrong, but you're not going to change people. As long as it doesn't start to infringe upon some sort of actual physical advantage in my life (i.e., being paid less for same work) then I don't care either.
