Zet January 19th, 2011 3:57 PM

I'm pretty sure Bel is still Bel in English and not something else. I'm quite disappoint with the translation since they killed a great game that will shortly be in our hands. :/

January 19th, 2011 3:59 PM

Nah, they changed it to Bianca (unless they decided against it, which would be nice...). But they kept Sharon though (that's how I always pronounced his name despite knowing it'd be pronounced "Cheh-rehn" or something like that).

Black is one of the best games I've ever played for the DS, and so I'm disappoint what will become of it.

AshPikastar January 19th, 2011 4:04 PM

Yeah they changed it to Bianca now. I was surprised that they did since Bell was somewhat a English name.

Zet January 19th, 2011 4:05 PM

I was talking about translation fail with the name change for Bel.

January 19th, 2011 4:06 PM

And as I said, there was already a Bianca in the anime. /in before "the anime is not the same as the game" or something along those lines, but remember that Bel also appears in the anime, unlike other rivals (Silver, Wally(?), and Brendan)

AshPikastar January 19th, 2011 4:09 PM

I wish Brendan appeared in the anime. I would have loved him to be Ash rival. Did he have a rival back in Hoenn? I haven't watched Hoenn in ages.

January 19th, 2011 4:19 PM

You musta missed a page or two; the 3D convo. was a bit back.

And some people can't even see the 3D due to eye conditions, so I'm really not too keen on it. /not one of those people, but knows someone like that

Livewire January 19th, 2011 4:22 PM

Overall I think the English names are pretty good. Some are better than others, but for the most part I like them. :)

Brendan did appear in the anime. As a split-second cameo. I don't think Ash had a rival.

January 19th, 2011 4:23 PM

I think Nintendo could've done better with the names. Like, I dunno, be more creative with them?

I fear for the gym leader names, though there's some hope for the more English-sounding ones if they kept N and Team Plasma ('course, if they changed those I really would weep).

Yeah in the movie opening but was only there for a few seconds. So I'm guessing Hoenn was the only region that Ash didn't have a rival in.

Demigod January 19th, 2011 4:28 PM

Agreed, some of them are ridiculously not creative.

They're plenty creative. Deino > Zweilous > Hydreigon are based on dragons/dinosaurs and the German names for 1, 2, and 3 (based on their heads), which is pretty clever in its own right.

Brave + Aviary

Chandelier + Lure

Bear + Arctic

Escargot + Cavalier

January 19th, 2011 4:28 PM

And Johto, sort of. Gary wasn't there a good portion of the time. Nor was he in the Orange Islands either.

War + eagle is better, though. I'll give you the Ein/Zwei/Drei reference though.

He had Morrison and Tyson toward the end. I wish Harrison would have made an appearance in Hoenn though )= His Blaziken was beastly.

Ninja Caterpie January 19th, 2011 4:51 PM

You're saying creative?

In terms of creativity, the English names are mostly better than the Jap ones. Whereas some jap names often use English partly or entirely (eg. Shanderaa is just chandelier...), English names use puns in English and rarely other languages (sometimes though, like Deino's line). The Jap names have gotten better over time though (eg. Shanderaa is practically the only full-CP'ed English name in BW, whereas the rest are mostly English puns... in Jap names).

January 19th, 2011 4:54 PM

The puns are terrible, though, and the Japanese died down with the English names quite a bit since first gen. I'll give you the fact that Flareon/Vaporeon/Jolteon is greater than Booster/Showers/Thunders and Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres is better than Freezer/Thunder/Fire.

But at the same time, though, the English names the Japanese have come up with now are a lot more creative and a lot better than the terrible puns the US came up with. Heck, I don't see why they had to change Chillarmy and Wargle (though this one I understand more since it could be interpreted as calling the US "war-happy" or whatever).

The 100 Mega Shock January 19th, 2011 5:11 PM

Wargle comes out horrible. It's like you're choking on something halfway through talking about a Pokémon, whilst Chillarmy is what happened when the Germans tried to invade Russia in World War II.

Luck January 19th, 2011 5:17 PM

Pokemon names are pretty horrible regardless of their region. It's just more apparent now that there's a new region with new horrible names to poke fun at.

January 19th, 2011 5:51 PM

And here's where the veterans come in and say "In my day, where we wouldn't of known about the Japanese Pokemon names because the internet was still young, we wouldn't complain about the names."

Ah, at least they don't all have a name obviously referring to what they are and ending with "-mon". I do love Digimon, but eh.

There's a Pokémon called Wargle? LOL oh wow..

G-Man January 19th, 2011 7:49 PM

I honestly don't care what they are called, I'm going to buy, play, and enjoy the games either way. I may not memorize this generation's names like I have the others, though, since they are rather retarded sounding, so meh.

AshPikastar January 19th, 2011 7:50 PM

Wargle is my favorite Pokemon now in B/w. I was a bit upset with his English name but I'm starting to get over it but Kibagos name I might not get use to at.

They're particularly clever if you focus on the Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, as another 1, 2, 3 reference.

I totally dodged the 5th gen in Japanese. I want a totally unknown game to play through, so I can hopefully regain some of the experience that the old games had. I know that's not going to happen. Both RBY and GSC had some undefinable quality in the story/mapping that I can't see coming back.

donavannj January 19th, 2011 9:03 PM

Take of the rose-tinted nostalgia glasses, people. These names are the same quality as in previous generations. I see no difference in the name quality.
