Wow, the octupuses/octopi/octopeople look real awesome.

I like kolibud, and [strike]dino-dude[/strike] the dino looks swell, but the bandages on flamincula look akward. Like it's actually covering the legs itself, giving flamincula a sense of 'the inability to balance'. If you want bandages, maybe you could wrap mummy bandages on the shin, all the way to the ankle.

I liked the sound of:
Quote:

Name: Tanlare
Etymology: Tangle/Tentacle and Scare/Glare
Type/s: Water/Dark
Pokédex entry: It lives at the bottom of the sea. When someone comes up, it jumps on it and tries to bite it.
Ablility/ies: Intimidate or Pressure
Description: A blue theatral mask with huge fangs, big mouth and dull, black eyes. It has holes in its body, and green tentacles grow out them.
Concept: xoax
Theatrical masks made me think of the comedy/tradegy masks, so I started doing this:

http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff112/Taimato/tanlare.png

(Obviously WIP)

I haven't done a lot of spriting before so I thought it might be best to get some opinions on what I have already, before going further.

Nimblethumbs January 29th, 2011 6:26 AM

Hmm, looks good, except the teeth are off, and the bottom left corner of the mask is amgled wrong.

metalflygon08 January 29th, 2011 9:53 AM

http://www.iaza.com/work/110130C/iaza19739440344700.gif

changed the tentacle placement.

I also think Octopot would be a better name for the first stage.

Poke_a_Dialga! January 30th, 2011 9:49 AM

http://www.pokecommunity.com/picture.php?albumid=3262&pictureid=52052
(I reuploaded it in Pokecommunity. For some resaons, imageshack somehow didn't work :O)

Name: Furnary
Class: Burning Pokemon
Type: Flying/Fire
PokeDex: Furnary live in barren, rocky regions and never migrate, as in the past
this has lead to the ignition of swamp gasses and the burning of dry plains.

Description: A large fiery bird. (evolution of Kilnary)
Concept/Sprite: Chesu/

I wanna give it a try ;)
It was a good practice as I never really drew birds :)
Criticisms appreciated~

flamemaster January 30th, 2011 11:22 AM

sorry i had already made furnary and it was kinda excepted we just need to work on it.

Aside from being a little too obvious, I wanted to steer away from "oct" names because of Octillery; that's why I focused on "pus" names. I really like what you did with the sprites; it's rare to see Pokemon that look legitimately dangerous. Why is there a loose pot in the arm next to the beak, though?

Also, octopus don't have tentacles. :P

metalflygon08 January 30th, 2011 12:00 PM

It's got it in it's tentacle's grip, ready to slip on like a boxing glove.

blackmoonflower January 30th, 2011 2:13 PM

I kind of like Poke-A-Dialga's Furnary more. The wings and tail need some work, and it's a little chubby, but it's less plain. That's just my opinion.

Logiedan January 30th, 2011 3:50 PM

We could have a vote in which Furnary is more preferred like Scarf's Octopot and Metalflygon's.

metalflygon08 January 30th, 2011 8:50 PM

I noticed a suggestion list mentioned SnapDragons, and I know we arn't supposed to submit new Ideas atm but...

http://www.iaza.com/work/110131C/iaza19739449181900.gif
a clever take on a snapdragon design puns on snap, dragon, plants, and the flower.

Nimblethumbs January 31st, 2011 2:53 PM

For the furnary, i'd vote for poke_a_dialga, though it needs to be curved at the wings.

Also, I already did a tanlare, so mebbe we could vote me and dreamer?

Esper January 31st, 2011 5:40 PM

I knew my flamingo had problems. I don't have a new sprite for it, but I'm working on it.

If we're voting then I'll vote for metalflygon's octopus since it's already got an evolution that matches it in style and it looks more polished than mine.

Put my vote on metalflygon's as well. Sorry, Scarf. :nervous:

Logiedan January 31st, 2011 9:39 PM

Metalflygon's sprites could use a highlight or two, but that's not a problem. I'm putting my vote on Metalflygon's Octopot, although I do love the colours in Scarf's.

Don't forget to name it and all that.

whilest I'm not against highlights, IMO some pokemon don't need them, both Octos when I sprited them, were sprited to be dull, octopi arn't known for having a sleek reflective outer-coating, so I avoid that, Pokemon like Dragonite, who have scales that relfect light give a shade of highlight, but don't look bad without it. IMO, the lightsource in pokemon isn't so powerful that every pokemon get's a highlight, Azumarril and Octllary were what I looked at whe deciding how to shade, both have similar complexions as the Octorocks, and most of the Octo-capture-pot's I saw on google were not that siny either, made out of clay and mud, not very good at shining, so to speak.

Spherical Ice February 1st, 2011 11:46 AM

For now, I'm just tending to posts which have sprites that I'm accepting. Everything else won't be responded to, I'm afraid.

I'm afraid we can't accept that sprite unless the concept artist wants to put his Fakemon idea and design into our community dex. Otherwise that sprite is not accepted since the idea belongs to someone else's 'fakedex' and not our communitydex. I don't know if I explained it correctly.. lol.

Chesu February 1st, 2011 2:10 PM

Oh wow, I somehow hadn't seen Scarf's new sprites! :D

Also, anything made from the "basic ideas for Pokemon" list doesn't need to show me as co-creator, since I didn't actually come up with the concept for the Pokemon the spriter made, just a suggestion of what one could be based on. Snapgon is a great example; all I did was suggest using a snapdragon. I don't want to take credit for something I did absolutely no work on. ;)

shiny form up and fully operational captain!

Next on Agenda, Pistol Shrimp, t's going to be a 2-stage evolution, water->water/fire, expect beta sprite up tonight for critique.

Chesu February 1st, 2011 2:27 PM

I don't think you need to worry about shiny forms or backsprites... Not until we have enough ideas to start finalizing them, anyway.

What's the rationale for making the evolution water/fire? I'm not criticizing, just curious.

metalflygon08 February 1st, 2011 3:11 PM

the bubbles Pistol Shrimp shoot momentarily hit the temperature of the sun, that's the part I plan to run with in the design, as well as a lone-ranger style Shrimp.

Shrimp's 1st stage

http://www.iaza.com/work/110202C/iaza19739414841600.gif

Shreso (Peso/pedro and shrimp)

Water

Abilities-Technician/Sniper, DW-Adaptability

Preso shoot high powered bubbles with excellent accuracy, usually found living in coral communities. It chooses not to live with others of it's species, and instead protects it's home from Pokemon that would do it harm. Whith 2 claws capable of shooting bubbles, the right claw is more powerful, but less accurate, the left claw has a sight, but trades power for accuracy.

The Bandana is actually part of it's 1st segment, in evolution, it will become a poncho, and the evolution will be based on Poncho Vila!

Evolves into

http://www.iaza.com/work/110202C/iaza19739418513900.gif

Shriperado

Water/Fire

Abilities-Flash Fire/Sniper, DW-Adaptability

These ruthless pokemon shoot super-heated bubbles at weak or wounded pokemon for their own amusement, usually never with their own kind, they will occasionally team up with Gouybe's to attack coral communities. It adjusts the power of it's shots by widening it's pinsers before firering. It can also hold it's shot in to cause a massive explosion. The only pokemon brave enough to face this pokemon is Shreso.
