Open minded vs closed minded.

No paragraph description here, folks. Right to the point...

Which one are you?
Are you glad?
What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
How do you deal with people in the other classification?

Miss Doronjo January 17th, 2011 8:58 AM

I find myself as an open minded person, I'm proud to say.

I realized that having an open mind consists of having patience and acceptance of all views no matter how dissimilar to your own that they may be. Each person's opinions are their own and like it or not, having an open mind precludes a person from the chance of trying to hold another person back because their views are different. So by having an open mind, I find myself open to other's opinons, so that may influence me to have my own opinion with the knowledge of others. In addition, It helps me to understand people from their respective point of veiw, or "follow in their shoes" as a sense of empathy. So again, I am pretty glad to have an open mind.

With my tolerance towards to those who are close minded, I normally try to stray from them, since often I find myself becoming resistant to the other person’s position, so it gives me frustration...silly as it may sound, I hate it if people won't accept or recongnize another's opinion. How I deal with closed minded people, I can still deal with close-minded people rationally without emotionally resisting their position. I would make an effort to see if I can help them become a little more open-minded without making them wrong. They have their own opinions, yes, but its also a sign of respect on my part; just trying to help them see the postives or all ideas of whatever topic disscussed.

Captain Fabio January 17th, 2011 10:09 AM

Which one are you?
Open minded

Are you glad
Yes?

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
If that is how they want to be then fine, I ain't going to be first in line to change that.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
I deal with them as I would anyone. I don't let that change the fact that they are a human with their own personal beliefs and their own way of life. They want to be closed minded, good for them.

Sydian January 17th, 2011 10:17 AM

Which one are you?
I'd say I'm usually pretty open minded.

Are you glad?
Yeah, I reckon.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
It depends. Some closed-minded people are very rude and blunt on the matter. And I just don't have the time for it. I'll tolerate that person, but if we're arguing about something, then I'll just put that down because I don't want us to rip each others heads off.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
Kinda answered that already. lol

Rogue planet January 17th, 2011 10:27 AM

Which one are you?
I'm a mixture of both. I am tolerant of people that deserve tolerance, however I am intolerant of those that I deem to be undeserving of tolerance. Usually the people I deem to be undeserving of tolerance are those who are intolerant to others, eg. hardcore Christians that spread intolerance about homosexuality, people who are ignorant, etc. People who go out of their way to give other people a hard time, are the kind of people that I really hate, and I will never give them tolerance. I guess I'm intolerant of intolerance.

Are you glad?
Yes, I don't see why some people should be given tolerance when they don't even give it themselves or clearly don't deserve it because of their rude nature.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
Pretty much just mentioned that, lol.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
Ignore them or ***** them out. I don't think I could EVER respect someone who's intolerant of others. Unless of course, they're just intolerant of intolerance.

Esper January 17th, 2011 10:54 AM

Which one are you?
I sort of fall somewhere in between.

I like to think that I'm open-minded because I share a lot of beliefs with open-minded, inclusive, progressive, and thoughtful people. I'm not someone who judges on a lot of things because, honestly, it would be harder to justify to myself judging someone based on race, age, sexuality and so on. In a lot of ways it's easier to be open-minded.

However, I can be arrogant. Sometimes I feel like other people are idiots because they can't see things my way, that my way is best, etc. It might not show much here because on a forum I have the ability to edit what I think, to take the time to word what I mean the way I want to word it. It gives me time to work through my initial prejudices, but I still have them.

Are you glad?
It's not something I really take any pleasure in or feel bad about. I'm not a saint so I don't think I need any extra ego boost.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
Not sure who that means given how I answered, but I generally have less tolerance for someone the more intolerant they are. For instance, I'm more tolerant of Mormons who come to my door and try talking to me about their religion than I am with those fiery televangelists who accuse people of being evil. I don't care for either group, but I'd at least be polite to the Mormons since they at least were being civil. I can't say I'd do anything but get angry if I ever ran into one of those Pat Buchanan types.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
I try not to have dealings with intolerant people, but if I'm forced to I try not to engage in conversation around any "hot" topics. If that doesn't work and they persist in showing off their close-mindedness then I'll try to interject a few comments just so they'll understand I don't agree with them. If it gets worse then I'll just argue with varying degrees of civility until I physically can't be in the same space as them.

Ayselipera January 17th, 2011 12:16 PM

Which one are you?
I would have to say I'm open minded or at least I believe myself to be. Generally you can tell me anything and I won't judge you. I feel like if you live your life as a close minded person you'll miss out on all the people and personalities there are out there and I enjoy speaking to a wide variety of people. Although I know I have my bouts of close mindedness here and there.

Are you glad?
I'm glad in a, "I'm happy with my self choices" kind of way. Meaning I'm content with my views, but I don't rave about it to myself or anyone else.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
I'm tolerant of anyone's thoughts or ideas, but if your own intolerance is destructive to the people around you then I'm a bit put off. For instance if you take your own intolerances and spread lies or hurt the people you are intolerant against then you've overstepped my tolerance of you.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
I love meeting and talking to close minded people because I enjoy hearing what they have to say. Everyone needs somebody to listen to them and I'll listen to you all day long if you'd like. I may get annoyed to a certain point, but I figure if I enclosed myself around all open minded people and refused or avoided close minded people then I wouldn't be any better then those who are close minded and refuse to accept new ideas. To be honest conversing with people who have the same ideals as me is great, but it gets boring after a while. I love having civilized conversations with people who disagree with me just for the sake of hearing something different.

Capris January 17th, 2011 12:30 PM

Ha, of course everybody wants to call themselves open minded.. but I'm not sure we all are. I might sound hypocritical calling myself open minded after I just said that but I get the feeling I'm a lot more open minded about generally anything than most people.

It doesn't have to do with agreeing with people in arguments but more being okay with things they do. I don't mind people who dress a certain way, I don't mind people expressing themselves however they want, I don't care if people swear or fight. This forum has rules that look more daunting than my drivers manual and when the majority of members feel that they're all reasonable I can't see them as open minded. It feels awfully censored I guess is what I'm getting at.

Like somebody else mentioned if I was to be considered close minded it would only be because I don't approve of overbearing people who focus so much on guidelines, etc, like hardcore Christians or parents who think they're doing their child good by restricting and supervising everything their child does.

Melody January 17th, 2011 3:58 PM

Which one are you?
I'm very open-minded
Are you glad?
Yes. I'm damn proud of it.
What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
Fair. I respect things such as religious beliefs and such if they're not unreasonable.

What I can't tolerate is people who simply won't entertain a new idea, that's counter to what they believe in at all. I hate people who are that rigid. They're jerks. There isn't a reason in the world to refuse to use your mind to TRY to understand the opposite side's argument even if you disagree.

I get along with closed-minded people all the time, just as long as they try not to be shut down that tightly on anything, and they state their objections clearly, politely and without being offended that I disagree.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
They're human too, so I don't give them too hard of a time unless they're being rigid without telling me why. You cannot ever disagree with me that violently without telling me why. Doing so can make a troll, or worse an enemy, out of me very quick. I won't tolerate that from a civilized person. There's no excuse. You can open your mouth and tell me why you can't tell me you disagree if that's seriously the case.

January 17th, 2011 4:34 PM

Which one are you?
Both.

Are you glad?
Oh boy I don't know what makes me glad about being open/close-minded.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
I'm open-mined with things like sex, education, ideas, etc. I'm seriously close-minded when it comes talking about my life especially to strangers.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
Huh I deal with anyone.

jigglyppuff8 January 17th, 2011 4:34 PM

Which one are you?
I'd like to say I'm open-minded considering how easily suaded I am at times, but I'm pretty closed for the most part. Agree with my opinions dammit.

Are you glad?
Feels indifferent, man.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
As long as they share my opinion, I'm cool, I guess. If they don't they'd better have a damn good reason. If their opinion differs from mine with good arguments, then good for them. It's their opinion and I respect that. If it's supported with crap arguments, I will tear them apart.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
Feels indifferent, I guess. Haven't really thought of it.

Archeos January 17th, 2011 5:21 PM

I try to be as open-minded as possible. Granted, I'm not perfect, sometimes I can appear to be a bit close-minded to certain topics, but anything else, I really do try and put an effort to being as open-minded as possible; considering other people's opinions and views on things before actually putting my own opinion out there.

I wouldn't say that I'm neither glad or not glad of it, it's just something that I do. I suppose you can say that I'm a bit happy that I am slightly more open-minded than I am close-minded. People's perspectives matter a lot to me, believe it or not, and I try to take each and every point of view into consideration and whatnot(I hate repeating myself XD).

I wouldn't know how I would relate to someone who's the opposite, seeing as...I don't remember associating with those kinds of people? Call me anti-social, I know, I don't hang around that many people. XD

PlatinumDude January 18th, 2011 2:53 AM

Which one are you?: Closed-minded
Are you glad?: I'm not happy about being closed-minded at all.
What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?: I tolerate open-mindedness people a great deal.
How do you deal with people in the other classification?: I don't deal with any particular way with them.

インフェルノの津波 January 18th, 2011 2:58 AM

Very Open-minded, however if I'm doing a task or I am tired I can appear very close-minded.

I'm very glad that I am open-minded, if I didn't...well I would fear that my very being would change.

I have a very high tolerance for those who are open-minded, like my mother, but any one else who is close-minded I understand as well. I try not to start fights unless I think it's absolutely necessary.

professor plum January 18th, 2011 9:33 AM

I tend to be more open minded than close minded, yet I find myself making ignorant statements sometimes. However, no one is perfect, and if such a statement occurs, I try to rectify it. D:

I'm pretty happy to be open minded. I try not to judge too many people . . but it just happens for me. A lot. D:

I understand close minded people - it's not their fault they're ignorant. Often, it's just the way they were brought up/etc. It's just a matter of time before they realize their faults. Or, if not, that's their choice. :)
However, if the close minded person is infringing upon me in any way, or being just rude, I'll say something. I'm not about to be oppressed. However, I'm not going to lie - I enjoy trying to change a close minded person's opinion. n_n;

Legobricks January 18th, 2011 12:38 PM

I live by the wisdom of my experiences. I think we all do, that nobody is truly open-minded.

Guy January 18th, 2011 5:41 PM

Which one are you?
I'm pretty open minded about almost everything. I'm sure there are a few things where I can tend to get close minded some, but don't we all?

Are you glad?
Very, very proud to say I'm open minded.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
I can usually tolerate the other individuals pretty well. As long as they aren't being irrational about the discussion at hand, and they have viable facts or strong opinions to back up what they're saying, then I can't argue with that. Well, I probably could, but...

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
It depends on how close minded they're being. If they're both stubborn and not willing to hear out another person's opinion or at least give into some kind of acknowledgment about what is being said, then it gets a bit irritating. But, if they're at least somewhat open and accepting to at least bits or pieces of something the other person is saying and they can agree with it, then I'm not usually bothered.

Those who are really close minded though, especially about certain matters like race, religion, or sexuality, I can get upset over it since those can be considered delicate topics.

Kura January 18th, 2011 9:30 PM

I believe I'm pretty open-minded, but also very opinionated. I'll listen to what you have to say and accept it, but I will also get my own points across. Being open-minded doesn't mean you have to agree entirely with them.

GlitchCity February 12th, 2011 4:56 PM

Which one are you?
I have been told that I am open-minded.

Are you glad?
Oh yes, it seems to make life easier and more acceptable.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
On borderline, like my mom for example. I think closed minded people are generally negative people.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
I dont interact with them much, Im not that close to my mother.

Saryka February 12th, 2011 5:04 PM

Which one are you?
I'm pretty open-minded.

Are you glad?
Glad to be open-minded? Yes, yes I am.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
I get very impatient with close-minded people. I'll listen to what they have to say, sure, but it's frustrating having to deal with their closed-mindedness.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
Mmm, don't pay them any mind. It's the easiest thing I can do. I don't like to start things with people.

Corvus of the Black Night February 13th, 2011 11:16 AM

Which one are you?
99% of the time Open-minded.

Are you glad?
You better believe it.

What is your tolerance towards the other type of individual?
And that's where that 1% comes in. I can't stand people who are heavily close-minded. They drive me up a wall... It usually comes up within the first 15 minutes of talking with such an individual and it just makes me want to whack them upside the head.

How do you deal with people in the other classification?
Sometimes I try to make them see a bit more to open them up, but usually I just move on because they're not worth that trouble.
