Fighting through trainers that have 6 pokemon...
In Pokemon Yellow:
-Training before Brocks Gym with either Caterpee (>butterfree confusion), Mankey (low kick) or Nidoran (double kick) -Dark cave before Lavender Town. Zubats annoying the hell out of me -Power Plant with Electrodes and Voltorb self destructing -Sabrina gym fight -Silph Co teleporting -Bikers path -Cinnabar Island building with Raticate's hyper fanging all over... -Cave before Pokemon League -Training before Pokemon League (boring and takes ages) |
In Pokemon Red...
-Idiot opponents -Rock Tunnel (Granted, I just refused to use Flash) -SURF! You know how LONG it took me to figure out what I was supposed to do once I beat Fuschia??? I had NO IDEA about the Surf HM in Safari Zone! >:( Can't think of anything else off-hand. |
The Special stat. I mean really.
Multi-hit moves always being crits if the first one was, that was really annoying. Just...all of the oddities of the battle system. |
- The Saffron City guard (Took me forever until I checked on the internet)
-Team Rocket Hideout (Drove me crazy with all those warps) -Silph Co. (Very confusing) |
The fact that I could give someone a piece of paper that said, bike, on it, and he would accept that rather than 1,000,000,000 pokedollars.

Actually getting a bike. My brother kept telling me it was easy, but I could never figure out how. X,x; I always got him to do it instead.
Caves with Zubats, Hikers with Geodudes/Onix, etc. I really hated the cave to Lavender Town. I would use flash, but it still annoyed me. I got mad one time because once you leave the cave, there's like three or four trainers on the way to Lavender Town. All of my Pokémon would be really beat up. It was hard for my 8-year-old mind to avoid trainers. xD Silph. Co. When hard to catch Safari Zone Pokémon such as Chansey and Kangaskhan run away. >,< Fighting Brock when my strongest Pokémon was Pikachu. Having to go through the Cinnabar Island Mansion. My younger mind never understood why a key is buried in an abandoned mansion that unlocks a building close to it. |
Zubat is up there... but I would have to say Lt. Surge's gym. It was so annoying to not randomly get the right trash can. On the other side though, it was so exciting when you got it on your first try!
Probably Lt. Surge's gym. It still annoys me from time to time even to this day, where as other times it could just take me but a few seconds to figure it out. However the first time I made it to Unknown Dungeon I didn't have any Pokemon that knew Dig nor did I have any Escape Ropes and on top of that no Max Repels so needless to say it took me a while to get out of there. >.>
Probably nothing. I played it as a child and loved it.
But I would have to say; I was in Prep and people who were in grade 6 were showing me this game called 'Pokemon', they jumped of a ledge in the game and told me you press the middle of the D-pad. So, me being naive and all (Hey, I was like 5) I went out and got the game for my birthday only to find out that you couldn't jump. That annoyed me the most. xD Oh! Or the fact I was a very poor reader and had a hard time beating the game. |
Long surfings - Tentacools. Opponents who have six bug pokemon(This is especially annoying if your starter is bulbasaur). And of course, rival.
It's annoying when I miss a pokeball on a Legendary (even while asleep and low HP). And when my PC messed up and I had no choice but to restart the game..
Red and Blue: Wrap, the fact that it rendered you completely immobile was a bit of bullhorn.
Yellow: Being forced to use PIKACHU as a starter, making BROCK, without the aid of another POKeMON, damn-near impossible. |
In R/B/Y I really hated Sabrina's gym. The stepping on tiles to teleport around the gym was brutal. I spent hours trying to get to her when I was little because I didn't have the strategy guide or the internet back then. Coming in a close second is Lt. Surge's trash can matching game.
A couple of parts annoyed me actually, such as fighting Brock with only Pikachu, Sabrina's gym and also Silph Co.
I hated the fact that Brock had unlimited Full Heals. I managed to poison his Geodude a lot times in a row, and he just kept spamming Full Heal. Don't they have like limited amount of items?
i hated how there was no attack animation and that you couldnt run
All the mazes were pretty serious challenges. Also, my pokémon were underleveled, so random appereances of Blue were devastating. I watched the anime sometimes, and I found annoying how Ash simply said "Evade the attack that has 99.6% of accuracy in the game, use Thunderbolt!", while my pokémon took all the damage instead of evading like Ash did.
So, when I first got Pokemon Yellow I was like 5 or 6, and I was literally SUCH AN IDIOT.
I was fighting Brock and I seriously had no clue why Pikachu's thundershock wouldn't work. I would keep trying to use Thundershock and I would keep losing and I would keep going back. Also, one day I decided I would try to evolve Pikachu. I kept giving it a Thunderstone and it kept saying "Pikachu refused the stone!" and I didn't know what "refused" meant, so I would go to my dad (who was usually the one to advance the story- I would just battle random people) and be like "Well, Pikachu didn't evolve, but it refused the stone! I'm getting closer!". God, I was so dumb. Hahaha. |
Silph Co.
I spent 4 hours in that building trying to figure out where to go. |
In Blue, the gym battle in Vermillion City. My Lvl 31 Wartortle was rendered useless. Oh, and I found Missingno... oops.
In Yellow, I just hated Pewter City. Couldn't find a Pokemon before hand that was skilled in Grass-type attacks (bad luck on my part). |
When I played Yellow for a full play through I forgot to use flash and ended up getting through Dark cave but it took ages and I ended up clearing it without any visible sight.
For me i would say the most annoying thing was the glitches of course they weren't an issue until i discovered these with my brother online lol. Anyway as fun as they were they also killed the game experience. Up until i learned of them i played my games 100% legit and beat the game the only way it should be! After learning of these glitches though as a kid i would basically neglect all pokemon besides my starter and when i got far enough into the game to visit Cinnabar Island i would use rare candies and HP UP's on all the other 5.
It was fun but it really makes me feel dirty now thinking back to it lol. I have since returned to playing these games and doing it without any sort of glitch or cheat and the feeling of completing the game is so much more rewarding to me anyway. |
One time I ran out of repels in Mt. Moon. Now every time I see a Zubat I burst into an untamed fit of rage.
I got two:
Team Rocket Hideout, Celadon Game Corner. That spinning mania really grinds my gears. Plus, you move slowly too. What's worse, it's easy to get lost and you have to retake it over and over again. And the pokemon mansion in Cinnabar too. I'm annoyed as heck when I'm stuck underground with the doors closed and out of repels. Same goes for other dungeons. |
No way to obtain Mew without glitches. Also another annoying part was the devastation felt when a younger sibling deleted your full level 100 stacked team because there is no extra file feature.
POKEMON TOWER IN LAVENDER TOWN! OOO MY GODDDD!
Mewtwo.
At first it was so cool, after all that hard work I could see what was in that cave and it was MEWTWO! And then came the overly buffed ice beams... |
Being underleveled by the eighth gym. I don't know why it always happened but it always did and thus I had never beaten the game past getting the eighth badge because I hated grinding and thus never wanted to do so for the Elite Four.
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. The Dratini in the Safari Zone. They were so difficult to catch and you only had x amount of balls before the guy on the PA announced time's up... Love is the Law, Love under Will. Quote:
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Oi vey, my little sister did that once. I was very unhappy with her for months after that. Love is the Law, Love under Will. |
Worst thing about it for me is Lt. Surges gym. I don't know why but his gym would just beat the hell out of my pokemon. This was especially brutal in Yellow when there was around a 7 level curb that you had to be ready for when there isn't really that much between Cerulean and Vermilion. He always got a critical hit Thunderbolt on my pokemon ಠ▃ಠ
Quote:
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Ah yes, I remember that now... despite having forgotten about it for a while (haven't played Yellow in forever). Oi vey, I so hated Mt. Moon. Love is the Law, Love under Will. |
Catching a chansey in the safari zone drove me insane. Also Lt' surges gym was a nightmare.
In Diglett Cave, I couldn't run away from any of the Diglett or Dugtrio. So they'd just KO all my Pokemon with Dig. It was pretty sad.
Brock's Gym on Yellow, SO ANNOYING ONIX. Oh, and the amount of encounters in Viridian Forest, takes way too much time...
Caves in general annoyed me. Partly because of all those Zubats ambushing me, partly because of some irrational worry I would be stuck in there and never find my way out again... I always carried loads of escape ropes with me. xD
Also, looking back the fight against Lance annoys me now. Back then, it was not annoying, just a challenge. I always managed to beat him down. What I didn't realize back then was that Dragon types are weak against Ice, seeing as Lance was the only trainer to actually have dragons. And I had a friggin Articuno in my team and never used it!!! -_- |
Haha, I love my Blue. I hated Rock Tunnel, but after the first run, my friends all came to me. I also hated Surge's gym. Mainly, I am addicted to the Mew Glitch. I have gotten up to 142 seen in my pokedex, with no trading, but Golem and the other two Eeveeloutions will always be the ones that got away. Today, I had 141 seen, and looked through the Pokedex. I forgot to catch Mewtwo. And I include Mew in the Pokedex.
I hate those d#mn rival, in Pokéleague, cz His pokémon PP in infinity :/
#ohgodwhy |
Victory Road with a low level challenge attached.
Mt.Moon and those damn Zubats. The whole cave was full of them, plus they get in the way even more when you just want to find a Clefairy. Also Rock tunnel is just as bad.
Caves.I just hated all the caves in Yellow.
caves... zubats spams .. confuse ray o-o
For me it was the cave Pokemon. When I wanted to get out of the cave quickly, every two steps a Zubat or Geodude. It was quite annoying.
Rocket hideout and silph.co. Rocket hideout because I had to wait 1 hour for the spin thing to finish and it is confusing. But Silph.Co...WAS CONFUSING AS HELL!
Going through Rock Tunnel without flash. Sure it was my fault, but still they shouldn't allow anyone to go through that kind of pain and agony and have made it necessary to get flash in order to proceed
Going through Rock Tunnel without flash is sinch once you memorize the path.
Seafoam islands with no Escape Ropes was hell got stuck on B4F and B3F |
Playing it nowadays.
The whole game hasn't aged well, only for nostalgia sakes. It's so broken and quite frankly, not that good. >< |
Brock's Gym in yellow. So hard if you didn't catch a Mankey (could you even catch Mankey on the route the the left of Viridian in Yellow?). It took me ages.
While I would say the Missingno glitch, which frightened me as a child to the point of me having something of aquaphobia for years after, I can't.
Because, in my old copy of Blue, I never got that far thanks to Safari Zone. I'm serious; little kid me was never able to get to the old guy's dentures because he got lost every time. And never had his Pokemon learn Strength. And by proxy, never got the HM for Surf. Older me wishes little me had a strategy guide like he did for Pokemon Silver. >=( EDIT: Also. Lieutenant Surge's Gym. Darn those trashcans. Little kid me didn't know the mechanics of how the puzzle worked, and took forever to get to Surge. |
I hated the Cycling Road. Route 13, 14, and 15 are close
Brock's gym in Pokemon Yellow. I had to evolve Pikachu to level 25.
- Rock Tunnel
- The fact that there's only one Ghost line and one Dragon line - Your EXP points aren't visible - Most Pokemon have shallow movepools - Gym Leaders/Elite Four members using Pokemon from the same family line and Pokemon that aren't associated with the type they specialize |
I would say the most annoying thing to me was Rock Tunnel, Victory Road, and Lance at the end of the E4...took me almost a year to beat him and his many Dragonites.
I always thought Vermilion's Gym was pretty darn frustrating. I also had trouble with the Seafoam Islands, I never found the exit of the Islands so I travelled from Pallet Town to Cinnabar instead xD
Yeah I hear you, I have a hard time with Vermillion as well xD And I couldn't find my way out of Seafoam Islands either xD
Quote:
the most annoying thing for me is still dem Zubats. and all the Voltorbs, Electrodes, Geodudes, Onyxes, Koffings and Weezings, etc that know explosion and selfdestruct. Seriously.. |
Peter of the Pokemon League, his Dragonites made me cry.
It didn't annoy me like being hard but it did annoy me as frustrating to see Blue have become the pokemon champion, even more amusing when you take his throne a few minutes after he earns it though xD
Lack of decent level up moves for a lot of Pokémon, hell for my most recent file of Blue, I had to abuse the Missingno. item glitch to get a bunch of copies of TM's so I could give my team decent moves. Also, the lack of being able to rematch trainers. It's hard beyond belief to get a whole team to Lv. 100 without abusing Rare Candies/glitches.
And Running Shoes would be nice, but, those weren't even thought up until two generations later. Technically you could say that about the rematching (I know Gold and Silver did have it, but it was a really inconvinent method). |
The Celadon city thing where you have to give the thirsty guard a drink. It took me two hours to figure it out.
>Seafoam Islands
>Not having a free slot when you're supposed to get Lapras and having to go all the way back >Silph Co. as a whole >How ridiculously expensive and useless Porygon is That's about it. And the binding move mechanics sucked. |
Apart from Silph Co. (which took me way too long), the most annoying part for me is there really wasn't all that much to do after you caught Mewtwo. If a game from the current gen lacked a post-game, everyone would be outraged, but even as a kid I was frustrated there was nothing left to do in Yellow, especially since I loved the game so much (no one to battle but the Elite Four again, no other places to travel to, etc.).
Rock Tunnel. I did not know of the existence of Flash when I was younger. ><
But if I can say one thing in general, those- "trapping" moves? Moves like Wrap and Fire Spin. Those. I mean, they'd use it, and them you'd never move, and then it would end. BUT THEN they'd use it again, and just- argh. |
Lance's Dragonite in Yellow... It hit my fully evasiened Pikachu way more times than it should have...
For me, I would have to say it would be forgetting flash and going through that damn cave.
The thing that annoyed me the most was that the Pokemon's icons were to generalized. Like if I had a Bug Pokemon in my party, and I went to the Pokemon section, it would look like a Bee. (I know this may need some explaining so if you don't understand please reply).
Getting past Snorlax from blocking the path or trouble getting through a city/town.
the only thing that really annoyed me in Pokemon RBYG was the fact that I had open the menu every time when I wanted to use an HM move, olther than that it was an outstanding game.
Those goshdang warp panels in Silph Co. or Sabrina's gym. I would get lost for so long as a kid. X_X
Yellow not letting Pikachu evolves thus no Raichu that can follow me...
The way of browsing Pokemon Stats. Like having to go out of the option and then select another Pokemon.
The EXP ALL thing I hated so much! It lagged so badly... Also, in Yellow I hated that they took out the Pokemon and didn't give Blaine/Giovanni their right Anime Team-Cohorts as such! |
Rock tunnel,Lance,Rocket Hideout,Silph Co.,Lavender Town's music(that music scared me as a child),Victory Road.
Definitely the part where you have to go through Rock Tunnel. This probably wasn't too hard in the GameBoy, but playing it on the GameBoy Advance (which had no lighting) was hell unless you had flash, but I don't think even flash helped much. It was just a pain to get through, but at least the cave itself wasn't too difficult.
I also didn't like not being able to rematch anyone. Granted it was the 1st generation so it does get a pass, but with how much the levels jump from Erika to Koga I'm surprised that they didn't implement it. |
Part that annoyed me most about first gen, ummm. I loved 'em but I'd have to say the broken typing's would be my biggest pet peeve. Ghost not effecting Psychic as a glitch was pretty annoying, and the Grass/ Bug / Poison mess was... confusing xD I went back and used grass attacks against bugs and went lolwut. Glad they fixed all the typing mishaps after the first generation of games.
Oh, also no running. FUUUUU |
The most annoying thing of the first generation had to be the Safari zone trying to catch any of the Pokemon there that I wanted like Pinsir. I also did not like having to get to the end for the surf when I was younger can do it easily now.
Rock Cave
When Pikachu hits level 35 how much you have to grind to level it xD Safari Zone and my Yellow would very rarely freeze during the champion battle. |
Walking through a cave and/or grass and running into the same pokemon 5 times in a row or more!
training kadabra to 100.. Not knowing it would evolve through trade.. lol
Definitely Rock Tunnel, because it requires the use of the most useless HM's in the game. You need to teach a pokemon cut to get to the cave and flash right after it in order to navigate through the cave. Of course you can also get through without flash, but it is way more comfortable with flash. Also I usually have to get back to the Pokemon Center halfway through because my pokemon took a lot of damage in battles or were poisoned.
Victory Road can be tough aswell. It's annoying to encounter Zubats/Geodudes every two steps; and you need strength. At least there are trainers inside the cave. |
To be honest, the only issue I have ever had with the game was the hardware itself, I couldn't tell you how P'O'ed I was when I turn on the game and the save was gone, later found out that the internal battery tries up over time, but only with Red and Blue, because somehow the save function still works for me on Yellow, that I had for about 15 years now :D
"The ball missed!" |
I'd have to go with the Silph Co. and their teleport tiles.
Nower days it's an okay challenge, back then as a kid it was freaking hell |
Toss up betwene the red graphics, and the viridian forest.
The one thing that really bugged me back then was the item limit <<; a lot of the times I'd end up running out of space ^^;
If we are talking about game mechanics, it would have to be all the glitch moves, focus energy lowering your crit. ratio, permanent freeze. For areas in the game, Silph Co. That is the most confusing area in any pokémon game. I can still never fully remember the correct path.
The last few caves/dungeons at Seafoam Islands, Cinnibar Mansion and Victory Road. It was as if there was no through, or out of SI unless you got lucky
Seeing:
"Nope! There's only trash in here. Hey! The electric locks were reset!" Killed me a little inside. |
When you would be walking through a forest, field, or a cave and the same pokemon keeps attacking you.
Navigating through Rock Tunnel without flash was a pain X_X.
Something I learned about pretty recently actually. The fact you could get a PokeDoll and be able to bypass the entire Celadon Game Corner part of the game. With the PokeDoll, you can go try and battle the ghost Marowak and use it, which causes the game to think you beat it. A very small oversight, but still grinds my gears :P
Silph Co. That place is so large and confusing. Especially when combined with the bad graphic, it's gets even more complicated.
Flash being rendered useless since there is only one place where it is usefull (actually no there isn't) also if you teach it to a Pokemon it couldn't forget it. Always switching Pokemon so they could get a decent amount of exp, since EXP-Share was pretty useless. Scyther being only catchable in red version (since I had blue and didn't know anything of the Mew glitch)
Stupid ol' Rock Tunnel. But I got through it, and nothing else too annoying.
Bind and Wrap and all caves. What with their "three-step; battle" thing that STILL happens in current installations today.
My game freezing after leaving it on standby for more than 5 minuets. Or the cartridge coming out and the game re-setting it took me forever to get to lavender town...
Lack of repels... enough said?
Lt. Surge's Gym (3rd). It was just to annoying trying to literally guess my way though
When your bag is filled with Key Items that can't be disposed, so whenever you find an item you can't collect it because your bag is always full. That is why I can't stand playing Gen 1 games (and the fact that I can't save anymore).
