Obama Resumes Military Tribunals at Guantanamo Bay

U.S. President Barack Obama has resumed military tribunals for Guantanamo Bay detainees. The Republican Party is praising him for this move.

He's also created an indefinite detention system for detainees there.

When he first became President, he promised to shutdown Guantanamo. But since hes know for broken promises, this isn't anything shocking.

I guess it's one of those things where you make idealistic and uninformed promises before you get into power or when you've just gotten in, but you start finding out more and more things in your capacity as president that you couldn't know before and they make you realize you were wrong. Pretty sad.

Wait, does this mean that torture will still be used, or just that they can use 'Military Commision Trials', whatever that is a euphemism for.

So, come 2012 you're going to be voting between two Republicans?

Obama just keeps backing down on everything.

Maybe he had to back down because civil judges couldn't take care of the prisoners since 99% of the evidence against them was obtained via torture, the republicans refused to give money to send the prisoners to the US instead of having them in a nobody's land prison away from international law (because "having the prisoners in the US was way too dangerous, and creating a high-security prison for them -it was already located and planned- would be way too expensive"), and other countries barely accepted to host a handful of the prisoners :\

Seriously, the one to blame here was Bush for taking a piss on international war law and creating the prison to begin with. Taking everything that was done over 7 years down in barely 2 years is hard, specially if you don't really have support from other entities in the political sphere.

Obama barely has experience with international policy. guantanamo houses international fugitives, closing it down is going to take time and talks to multiple country leaders.

I really respect Obama though. Despite all his shortcomings, he's the most real president i've seen. He actually has a moral compass and is passionate about doing what's right. he's not at all awkward like our most recent presidents.

I doubt it, it doesn't look like anyone from the GOP has a strong backing so Obama might get a second term.

Went has gotten it nailed down. When you scare the legislators to cut any chance of funding to move them here in the US (Yes, there has been places here in the US willing to take them in. So yeah which politician wants terrorists in their backyard again?) hows the ef can you close the darn place?

So yes, President Obama can't just wave a magic wand and make those detainees disappear. Instead of blaming the guy who inherited this crazy system, I'd rather prosecute the people who made the system as it is, rather than grounding it in rule of law. Heck Bush could have codified a more just system in 2002, Congress was willing to act as a Stamp Act Congress back then for pete's sake!

Thank you, Went. I agree completely. it was so nice of Bush to completely ignore the Geneva Convention, etc, especially since his administration went out of its way to punish others who didn't adhere to it.

I'm not defending Bush at all; I'm just disappointed that Obama turned his back on something he promised. My opinion would be different if he never signed that Executive Order in the first place and took this stance from the start of his term.

I still don't see what federal laws the people who made the system would be prosecuted under. Care to elaborate?
