Do you miss the older generation Pokémon?
I've been trading to get some Generation 1 Pokemon before i've even gotten the 4th badge. Idk why, i just don't love this generation. I kinda feel like i'm cheating at the game, but i'm not, i breed them from level 1. So, do you all miss using some of the older generation Pokémon pre-game or do you like the fact that you can only use the native Unova Pokémon until after the National Dex is obtained?
I edited your original post slightly so it can bring in more of a discussion.
To add on to the topic, it's a little bit of yes and no for me. Yes because there are some Pokémon I would have liked to add on my team for support, and no because this allows me to play through without having other irritating Pokémon from the previous generations in my way. I find that with this way, I run into a lot of Pokémon I have thoughts on wanting for my team and it makes me go through several switches, which makes part of the fun enjoyable for a new generation. |
Don't miss them one bit, love seeing new faces every time I step in the grass.
Well, to be honest, I kinda do, being a veteran fan of Pokemon and all. but it's really nice to see some new Pokemon being revealed and having to enjoy the moments in this amazing generation. I will still cherish the memories with the older generations from time to time though.
I don't miss them. I'll see them in the post game. :) They are not forgotten, they have nothing to fear~!

I kinda do, I mean I think its ok as long as its not a permanent thing to leave out older pokemon.
I like having new monsters / friends to meet and play with. Its not that I miss my old friends, its just that I have a lot of new ones to meet. I am actually really glad that Gamefreak made it this way. Its more of a challenge. My old friend are not forgotten, and I will see them again some day soon.
No not at all. I'm completely happy that they only used the 5th Gen Pokemon in the 5th Gen Game, After you beat N and get Zekrom/Reshiram, you get access to some older Gen Pokemon.
I kinda miss them too, at least we get to see some later on though.
There are tons of the older generation Pokémon that I'd love to have on my team right now, but I enjoy seeing so many of the new faces around the region, that I don't feel any sense of desire to have them around. So, I'd answer no to that question. It actually makes the game a lot more interesting in the way seeing as I don't currently know all 156 of the new Pokémon just yet either; thus giving me the opportunity to try my hand at raising some of them for the first time without having to rely on my older Pokémon favorites.
I do miss them, but at the same time I don't.
I miss the familiar pokemon, but I absolutely love the new ones. This is my favorite generation, next to third generation (can't wait for the remake [:). It's fun not to see any old pokemon, but it also feels a little...odd. But, as soon as I beat the game all of the generations will mix again, so it doesn't really matter. The pokemon I miss the most is Magikarp. :'( (Not really, but y'know, Magikarp is awesomesauce...) |
I miss my Ninetales, but I'm loving most of the new Pokemon, and I'm glad to see the back of Geodudes and Zubats for a while!
I miss Hoenn. 3rd Gen for ever.
I personally enjoy the new change of scenery. Seeing brand new Pokemon, new challenges and areas is great. Of course some of the Pokemon aren't as good as some people had hoped but we can't complain since the new generations had some interesting Pokemon. It just takes some getting used to.
Yeah, I miss them, but it's time to move on. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to transfer my bros onto White, but having only new Pokemon makes this game feel fresh. I think it's pretty cool to see my opponent send out a Pokemon I've never heard of. Not knowing the Pokemon's types and strategies makes battles a lot more interesting. When you throw in these new moves and abilities I've never heard of, it's a whole new experience. Yeah, it doesn't really make much sense how the Unovans managed to keep the likes of Ratatta and various bird Pokemon out of their region. It's also kind of weird to see all the Pikachu love in a region that Pikachu isn't even native too. Then again, Pikachu wasn't even native to Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, it had to be imported to the Safari Zone/Trophy Garden...
Anyways, the downside of having nothing but new Pokemon is that the new Pokemon completely and utterly suck. I want simpler and more natural designs just the earlier generations. Bone structure, reasonable body proportions, and resemblance to real animals is getting less and less common amongst Pokemon in each generation. Yeah, I understand that Pokemon don't have to be based off animals and that some of you love all this intense creativity, but I prefer a mixture of that and realism. My White team is composed of very animal-like Pokemon such as Serperior, Galvantula, Sawsbuck, and Zebstrika. That's one of the beautiful things about Pokemon though; there's so much creatures that you're bound to like quite a few, even out of the new ones. I can guarantee that you like at least six of the Unova Pokemon. But yeah, if you really hate them so much you can always trade in some older Pokemon with a little help. |
I have always been able to leave the older generations behind without much hassle. I think I'll be fine with the fifth generation without missing anything.
How can you miss something that isn't gone?
Ugh, I hate nostalgiafans no offense. It's just really illogical to miss something that is STILL THERE. I love having a fresh start. I'm glad that the previous generation Pokemon don't appear until post-Elite Four. People need to stop complaining. The new Pokemon are amazing! Give them a try for once! |
Simply put: no. Don't get me wrong, I love the older generation pokemon, particularly 3rd and 4th gen, but I'm glad they aren't in B/W because I'd go crazy seeing the same pokemon imported to yet another generation. Starting over with entirely new pokemon really does make it feel like I'm playing pokemon again for the first time, somewhat. Besides not having older gen pokemon gives me a reason to actually complete the regional pokedex. For instance, I hated catching a tentacool in D/P just to complete the pokedex when I've caught one countless times before in other games.
I think it's good the left out older generation pokemonin the main game. I mean, I was part of the first generation, but I always found them distracting when trying to play the new games. Like in platinum, I'd pretty much pass everything up until I found a first/second generation pokemon, and, consequently, my 4th gen team consisted of MOSTLY first gen pokemon. I feel like them being there made it harder for me to appreciate all of the work put into the game.
Hmm, never thought of it. Not really since I haven't really noticed xD Im loving Unova's pokemon
Personally, I love not knowing what any of these pokemon are. I go into a battle and I look at my opponents and I have absolutely no idea what to expect, it keeps things fun for me. Now if it were impossible to get any older Pokemon at all, I would be very upset. Luckily, however, that is not the case.
Just by looking at the Pokedex, I slightly miss seeing Zubat, Geodude, Machop and Tentacool in the Pokedex. I don't miss Magikarp as much.
Not really, I love that you don't know any of the pokemon at the start, makes it feel fresh and exciting. Plus it means I'm forced to make teams with pokemon I've never used before. :)
Suprisingly, I don't miss them at all. I love all the new Pokemon I've seen/caught in my game so far.
I miss Generation 3 sometimes so I grab my Gameboy and play it for nostalgia. Then when I get bored of that I go back and appreciate the new games for their features and graphics.
There are some that I wish I could use...
not at all, I have played since gen 1 and its got abit boring see the same pokemon over and over. It adds to the fun that gen 1 had thats been missing since, a complete mystery of what this pokemon is and how to catch/faint it because the other gens had alot of repeats. in short love their absent until post game
No. It was fun thinking of a team to plan with brand new Pokemon. And playing Platinum, I freakin' hate how Geodude is EVERYWHERE! I can't wait to play Black with fresh Pokemon. It's a great thing GameFreak did here. I can't wait to see beautiful Frillish when I surf the seas instead of hideous Tentacool.
Not at all.
I like that there's no opportunity to use older Pokemon easily in B/W. It means that I have to use new Pokemon that I haven't learned a thing about instead of ones I know I can rely on. There's new strategies to think of, new experiments to try. It's fun to raise my team because I don't know what will work, compared to the basic formula I used to follow in other games. |
Gen 1 is my favorite. I will always miss them =(
I think it's nice to only have new Pokemon before beating elite4.
It gets you to familiarize the new Pokemon sooner. |
Perhaps they'll recreate the first generation on nintendo ds. and than ruby/sapphire,that'll be fun because I miss first generation too.It begin to have too much pokemons, more than 500 .. woaw
I found it a little difficult working out an effective team that worked for my fighting style, I'm so used to having roughly the same team in each of the games. It was great fun experimenting though, and I'd say my new team (or planned team), is on par or better than my old one. That's not to say I don't miss them and the personalities I assigned them, but I can cope.
I love the older gen Pokemon and my top favorites will always be from Gen 1. But to be perfectly honest, I've enjoyed this new generation of Pokemon so much that I've hardly even noticed the lack of Pokemon from previous generations. So, no I don't really miss using them.
Also, it was interesting building a team with Pokemon that I didn't know. It truly felt like I was starting all over again. I usually plan my team out before I even play a game and I confess, my team usually consists of as many Pokemon from the earlier Generations as are available in the game. This time, I couldn't do that. So, I was encouraged to learn about the new Pokemon and in doing so, I found a few that I like just as much as I like the older Pokemon. And even strayed a bit away from the usual formula I use in making a team. |
I do, but I don't. I'm perfectly content with using just the Unova Pokemon. You can migrate your previous generation Pokemon later anyways.
I do miss the old generation pokemon, but now I like the new generation.
I hated the dog and patrat's at the start. It's frustrating that ther's no grass or cute bug types at the beginning until you get to the pinwheel forest. It picked up there for me.
Not really, I've liked the fact that every pokemon I come across is new. It gives me more opportunity to look at the new pokemon instead of cluttering up my team with pokemon I know inside out.
I do to some degree, but I like not knowing which pokemon is really which right now. I like having to get to know new pokemon. It makes it more exciting for me for now. Plus, I can get my older gen pokemon later, so no biggie!
Haven't got that far in the games, but I don't miss the older ones at all. All the adorable cute new Pokemon make up for that :3
NO, this is a new generation, so I want to see NEW Pokemon, not like in DPPt.
I still play Ruby, Emerald, Fire Red & Heart Gold, so I get to see the older gen's Pokemon often enough. |
I only missed my mandatory Alakazam being part of my team (every single gen I have one in my team) so I got one now in my team even though I only have 6 badges.
Ahh! Definitely not. I'm so glad that there's finally a Pokémon game that features only the Pokémon that are introduced that generation. I thought I would go throughout the game getting a little upset that the older Pokémon weren't included, since I didn't think I liked that many of the Pokémon from this generation, but I haven't in the least. In fact, after playing the game, I've grown to like most of them quite well.
I'm loving the game without any older Pokemon included. It's pretty much a totally new experience and I'm enjoying the game for what it is. I didn't like 60% of the new Pokemon when I first saw them, but they've all grown on me as I've played through the game (even the ones I absolutely hated like Woobat and Klink) and now I think they're awesome :P.
I never minded the lack of old gen pokemon before because there was always Geodude, Machop, Abra and Magikarp (it was a bad pokemon but it evolved into an amazing one, though) but there is a problem when you have NO Geodude and NO Abra because Roggenrola and Gothita SERIOUSLY annoy me.
It hasn't really bothered me up till now. I actually like the fact that you can only find B/W pokemon in the wild (upto some point anyway). I've grown to love the new pokemon, and I find it to be a pretty exhilarating experience as it is. <3
Not really. After a few years, it's pretty damn good to see some new faces, albeit no Geodudes, Zubats, Chansey or Machop either. I love B/W because of that.
No. The reason I hated Pearl was because of too much variety and linking between all the other games (and a bad storyline). B/W is unique and fun because of the exclusion of these Pokemon until after the Elite Four.
Quote:
That's the problem, Geodude, Machop, Abra and Magikarp has been staple in the last 4 generation. In DPPT it was overrun by the old gen pokemon, making choosing team so much easier. Seeing new pokemon everywhere you go, catching every pokemon you see, trying to make different teams the fits your style, what makes Pokemon Black and White amazing, it brought back the feeling of Red/Blue era where you catch every "cool" pokemon you see and not knowing if they are good or not so you try them out in your team. |
I do not miss the old pokemon at all. In fact, even after defeating the Elite Four and getting the National Pokedex, I still use Unova Pokemon.
I mean, who doesn't like a Mienshao with Hi Jump Kick? It does MASSIVE damage, which impressed me, and I caught myself a Mienfoo, evolving it into a Mienshao, and I do not regret it one bit. |
Its not like they are gone forever. Its nice for once to be able to only have new Pokemon on your team, though I wish that there were more evolutions of older Pokemon because that is generally one of my favorite things to see when a new game comes out. But if there is a next generation there should be quite a few new evolutions because of the patter (Gen1 All new, Gen2 many evolutions, Gen3 few evolutions, Gen4 many many evolutions, Gen5 all new, so Gen6 many evolutons!!)
Well, it's not like they've been long forgotten or anything so no need to miss them. I personally love seeing new Pokemon whenever they come out, and I still like some of the old ones too.
Yes and no. Yes because I liked a lot of the pokemon.
No, because I like all the new pokemon too. I also like the new places. |
Yes and no. I do like using the Unova region Pokemon, although I do miss having a Dragonite in my Party. Good thing I'll be catching a Dratini after I beat the Elite Four. :3
I've been enthralled by the new generation to miss them.
Plus, it's not like we're back in the 202 era. The old Pokémon are still accessible through swarms, trading, and other methods. It's also the individuals I've carefully trained for competitive use I miss the most when starting a new generation, and I can bring them along this time. PS. NO ZUBAT OR TENTACOOL! WEEE!! \o/ |
It's so refreshing without Rattata and zubat. :)
The older Pokemon haven't disappeared or anything. They're still there. It's kinda refreshing, a change of scenery and Pokemon.
Nope, actually. I'm actually feeling like they've covered almost all of their bases with variety in the new Pokemon; I know that even if I started over with a new file, I'd probably use entirely different Pokemon and play through the game in a whole different manner. I really like the new ones that they've introduced, and while I'll miss my Gliscors and Tyranitars and Metagrosses for the time being, I'll get them later, and I'll enjoy my Excadrill and Conkeldurr until then. ;)
Not at all. I was bloody sick of Geodude/Zubat infested caves and Tentacools constantly having fiestas in the water when I was surfing. I absolutley love how the developing team took them out. It makes the new generation look like less of an afterthought of older generations and more like they have their own niche in the Pokemon world. The way the other gens did it just kinda made them blend in with the first generation, but with all of the first four generations taken out, it really gets you familiarized and even attached to these new Pokemon because of how they're standing out out their own.
And it's not like if you like OMG TTLY HAET DESE POKEMON! DEY SUCK EGGS I HAET DEM OMGGGG!!111 you have to keep them forever. You just need to use them long enough to beat the main story and then you can just trade with older games. |
I just got Black version after an extended break from pokemon. I haven't seen any of the new pokemon except the starters and their evolutions frp, Bulbapedia. I'm not going to spoil the new pokemon for myself (at least not yet, don't know how long that will last) but I'm searching for a wild pokemon modifier code so i can have one of the old starters, because I personally am not a huge fan of the new starters.
I bred myself a lot of Pokemon of generations 1-4 and I don't feel it's cheating at all. :D (I'm just at 4th gym and managed to trade some of them). They're even weaker than Gen V Pokemon.
So, I don't have to miss them. I also admit that most of Gen V Pokemon don't seriously appeal to me... (Not that I don't like them, but I find most a bit bland). EDIT: 50th post! ^^ |
I love older gen Pokemon to bits, but I've loved seeing all the new Unova ones.
Nope, I do not. I like the older Pokemon but the new ones are so awesome. I like this generation much more than any of the others. Besides you can get other generation Pokemon later after you beat the game.
Not really, but that's me i've finished all the other one's so many times it was really refreshing to only see the 5th generation and unlike most people i really like them.
I don't miss them, although I do have a bunch of Pokemon waiting on SoulSilver to be transferred over as soon as I beat the game. What I do miss is the region though. Good old Johto...
I miss Kanto region only :P
'cuz out of other 3 regions, Kanto region is still a mystery to me :P |
Somewhat, but they got kinda cliche' after a while. I'm loving the new Pokemon.
I also really miss the old gen. 1 (and 2) pokemon. Especially the starters :)
That's why I loved HearGold and SoulSilver :D |
I didn't miss them at all, it's refreshing to only see new faces.
That said I finished the game now so I'm encountering past gen pokemon at the moment. I actually hope they do something similar in the 6th gen. (except possible include some past gen evos that don't appear until after the main storyline) |
i dont mind not having them. i love having all new pokemon with none of the older ones. i think if they had included them i would have stuck with the old ones and never would have used the new ones just because i am stubborn like that.
I miss some a bit. Starly's line for example (The best 3-stage bird line ever). But I'll soon (after I've caught Reuniclus and Conkeldurr in my second gameplay trough) trade my HG/SS team and my Torterra from Diamond to my White.
Nope I do not miss the older Pokemon. These games have so many cool new ones that are much better. Anyways you can get older Pokemon later on.
I feel as though the exclusion of older gen prior to the elite 4 was a great thing. I like the fact that the game forces me to get acquainted with pokemon I've never seen. I especially like the fact that no Geodudes, Machops, or Zubats are seen.
Of course you'll always miss some of the prior generation guys but I'm sure you'll find some you like out of the 156 new ones that will become regulars on your teams. |
Not really. I grew up with Pokemon from the Red and Blue generations, and most people label my generation into the nostalgia freaks, but I welcomed the new pokemon and atmosphere.
Sure I missed using my Blastoise, but the whole game experience just excited me. It made me feel like I was 9 years old again. I didn't know what was coming to me, I didn't know most of the pokemon and their types (so battling was fun... and scary). I was literally 'what the heck is a joltik" "omg where is this city I am lost" "screw you last sage, I will find youuuu" "so that's what a haxorus is. oh god save me" |
Agreed with majority, in fact rather weirdly, I felt somewhat cheated that the main game with the Unova Pokemon didn't last that long. My main team will stay with the Unova guys because I already know Swampert, Feraligatr and Victreebel like the back of my hand.
It just doesn't seem right to be playing a Pokemon game where I can't catch Pikachu.
Pikachu has always been the mascot for the game. I don't even use one on my team but I just like knowing Pika is there. Plus Pika is just so darned cute! My problem with Black/White Pokemon is that the designers seem to have thrown everything plus the kitchen sink into every single new Pokemon. I miss the simple cuteness of the "babies". So far I am not "madly in love" with any of the new ones they way I am with Jiggly Puff and Pikachu. |
I miss a few of the older Pokemon but right now I'm lovin' the Unova Pokemon and will definitely be mixing a few of my older Pokemon from Soul Silver in with the best members of my Unova team.

I've loved having new and unknown Pokemon jump out at me when I enter a new Route. Also, the fact that almost every new evolutionary line is available in the wild pre-E4 means that there's a wider variety of Pokemon on each Route, which was pretty much my main hope for the 5th Generation. No more do we get endless streams of Rattata/Geodude/Zubat etc. In fact before you even reach the first Gym, you can have your starter, Lillipup, Patrat, Audino, Purrloin, and one of the monkeys to choose from. Not only did that mean you have more than just Starter + Pidgey/Rattata to choose from, but also that you have interesting types other than Normal to pick between. I think they could take it a step further, mind. I'm still waiting for the day when a Pokemon game is released where all 600+ are catchable in the wild from the start (IMAGINE THE CHOICE!)... But to answer the question in the OP, would it have been a better game if the Gen I-IV Pokemon were involved from the start? No, to be honest I don't think it would have. At least this way I was encouraged to use the new Pokemon, and I got to know and love them much more this way. |
As others have said, it isn't like you won't be reunited with you're old favourites after the main story is finished. (or before even if you're determined enough)
It's a good thing that we can't depend on old reliables to get us through. Besides, this is the 5th gen so it should be the 5th gens pokemon time to shine. |
Honestly, in my first playthrough, I didn't miss them at all. I was having so much fun discovering new Pokémon and training them that I barely even thought about adding anything to my team from previous generations.
Of course, in my playthrough of White, I traded in a Cherubi to use because that's just the way I am but otherwise, my team was fully 5th gen again. And I think next time I play, it's gonna be fully 5th gen once more. (And a game's Pokémon selection has to be REALLY awesome for me to not use a Cherrim in it. :P) Anyway, I love that they didn't put any earlier gen Pokémon in the main plot of the game. Seriously, it meant they didn't have to get lazy with the variety. We didn't just see Geodude and Zubat in every cave again. When you surf, you don't run into Tentacool, Tentacool, Tentacool, and more Tentacool. And overall it's just... a lot more fun because you aren't so tempted to grab something you're familiar with just for the sake of familiarity. It's like playing first gen all over again--you don't really know what something is when you catch it. And gym battles aren't all old Pokémon + one newcomer. It really made it more interesting for me. |
Not one bit. :D |
No, not really. We've had them for 4 other generations. Plus the east side of Unova has older Gen. Pokemon anyway.
No, not at all tbh. I would have died if I found another damned Zubat in a cave DX Or another Rattata, or Zigzagoon. I loved how it was all completely fresh and new, No annoying old pokemon popping up instead of the new pokemon. Surfing is like going ot be sooo peaceful without Wingull, Tentacool and pelliper. Can't wait XD
They're still in the game, you just have to beat the game.
So no. |
It's a fresh start. Some of these Pokemon I like already. I'm getting both games as my brother doesn't seem to like them. I already miss some of my top older Gen Pokemon but they're coming once the Elite Four are beaten. Unova is distant from other Regions and also they think that Pokemon from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh are suspicious. Weird....
I like how every pokemon you fight before finishing the game is new. The other generations were getting very repetitive. Plus, you can get past generation pokemon after beating the game, which is also good. I believe they did the right thing.
meh sometimes but if i do i just go play a older generation game
Meh. After the national dex I brought over anyone I really wanted or just some poke on to fillnup my pokedex. Really the only ones that I might "use" that aren't Unovs are Rayquaza, Girantina, and Infernape. Other than that I love Gen V pokemon.
I do not miss past generations, I am having a blast with the games and I have came up with a party of pokemon i liked in the unova region.
im in two minds about it.
i love the fact tht i dont know wats goin to come at me when i reach the next area in the game but of course i do miss the old gens aswel cuz i grew up with them and they are familiar to me, but im glad i can have them again once i get the natioonal dex so i guess its fine :D |
Although I adore the older generations, I'm perfectly content with Unova's pokemon......for now at least. XD (New dragons for the win!)
The original Gen I Pokemon will always be my favorite. I do like that we get new Pokemon though, but the original 151 are pretty much perfect.
Idk the older generations weren't the best at acknowledging the Fire-Type Pokemon..
Also the older generations 1-4 held a combined 18 fire-type pokemon (not counting there evolutions.) And now with this region has a total of 8 fire-type pokeon all on its own! (not counting their evolutions.) Thats incredible! and opens alot of opportunity for Fire-Types Im Stoked! :D *So do i miss the older ones.. yes, but like many are saying i will be able to unite them after the elite four so its ok!* |
Before I got Black I thought I was not going to like it because there were no Pokemon. But when I got it I thought it was so fun to discover new Pokemon and now I don't miss the oldies that much
I don't miss the older Pokemon. I love all the new Pokemon. You can always just get the older Pokemon after you beat the game so its no big deal.
Absolute not, I see plenty of previous generation pokemon post game. I'd much rather have the fresh sense of new pokemon then have to deal with the same ole pokemon that I have seen through the last 4 Generations over and over again.
When I play Pokémon games, my team always has only Pokémons of the Region of the game. Why?? Because want to try different teams and it's kinda dull to use same teams every time. And if I miss older Pokémons I can just begin a new journey in older games. It's that simple...
I'll miss some of them...
but I'll move on... |
At first I did, but once I actually started the game I was having a blast with these new Pokémon. So.. no. Because once I beat the game, I got to transfer over my Charizard and other powerhouses.
