Hilbert & Hilda Discussion

So, our heros for BW are Hilbert and Hilda.

http://i853.photobucket.com/albums/ab95/AllsparkSpin-Out/The%20Amazing%20RANDO/fdfb8e56.png

Anyone have any opinions on their design? Their names?

I'd not have chosen Hilbert or Hilda; such awful names, regardless their apparent meaning (Battle Maiden and something else, forgot). There's no charisma, no charm.

I'd have preferred Jett & Rima, or Jett & Candice rather than Hilbert and Hilda. They mean Black and White respectively, similar to Cheren and Bianca whose names also apparently mean Black and White.

Here's a nice list I recently conjured:

Spoiler:
Boy

Blanchard (White - French)
Candid (White - Latin)
Corvin / Corwin (White Castle - English)
Gavin (White Hawk of Battle - Welsh)
Gwynn (White - Welsh)
Irwyn (Fresh White - Welsh)
Rajat (Silvery White - Sanskrit)
Whitaker (White Land - English)
Whitby (White Farm - English)
White (White - English - duh)

Aswad (Black - Arabic)
Doug (Black Water - Gaelic)
Jet[t] (Black Gemstone - English)

Girl

Anwen (White - Welsh)
Blanche (White - French)
Blanchflor (White Flower - French)
Candie (Fire-White - Greek)
Fiona (White - Gaelic)
Gwen (White - Welsh)
Guinevere (White - Welsh)
Gweneth (White - Welsh)
Jen (White - Cornish)
Jennifer (White - Cornish)
Kandace / Candice (Fire-White - Greek)
Rim[a] / Reema (White Antelope - Arabic)
Whitney (White Island - English)

Jedda (Jet-Black Gemstone - English)
Mela (Black - Greek)
Melanie (Black - Greek)

As for design, I would've preferred a blonde heroine this time 'round. I like the images of the characters themselves, but the male sprite in-game is a bit awkward based on videos I saw. I play as a female (being female myself), and I like the design of her in-game. Smooth and nice to see. The male's hair is just too puffy >:|

Feel free to discuss, as I can't find another active topic on this.

Eurydice March 15th, 2011 6:17 PM

i think the design is awesome but what is up with there names... ugh i didnt even know that was there name until i read this. but they could have been more creative and chosen more unique names. hilbert sounds like a hill billy name to me....is japan making fun of us?

Sydian March 15th, 2011 6:20 PM

Blanchard and Melanie would have been amazing names for them. But anyway, I think they're my favorite protagonists tbh. They're both cute. :) But the names Hilbert and Hilda...omg i cant even...

Necrolium March 15th, 2011 6:21 PM

I hate the dude's name. If I were him I would never visit my mom on the game for a dreadful name such as Hilbert. (I'm sorry if that's actually someone's name and they read this.)

BDT March 15th, 2011 6:22 PM

I do agree that this gen translation names is not the best, but being a fool as I am, I did call my Character Hilbert :P as I call everyone in the game from there names given such as

Ash in Red/Blue/FireRed/LeafGreen
Jimmy in HG/SS (Didn't know his name back in the day before Pokemon Chronicles)
May in R/S/E
Dawn in D/P/P

It will be cool to see a cameo from either one of them in the next film such as Brendan/Jimmy and the Male from D/D/P (Can't remember his name at this moment of time)

Geras March 15th, 2011 6:26 PM

I don't really like the names. Apparently we got Germanic-based names for some reason and the Germans got English/Italian-based names. In German their names are Warren and Lotta which I personally like much better.

Yusshin March 15th, 2011 6:36 PM

Oh God, the French version, Hilbert's name is Ludwig, and Hilda's name is Ludvina.

>____>

Kamitsure-chan March 15th, 2011 6:42 PM

just let it be known that I HATE THE NAMES. >:( My name on my file is Claire XDD

Other than the names, I really like them. Two of the best protagonists.

インフェルノの津波 March 15th, 2011 6:48 PM

I thought they were called Blair and Whitlea.

Or well, names I hate, designs I do not.

But Yusshin, you gotta remember that THIS IS JAPAN. Even single hero/heroine has had dark hair, Brendan even had it, he was wearing a hat...I think. But yeah, he's dark haired as well.

Anyway, I like both of their designs, overall they're cool. Gamefreak just keeps getting better in my opinion.

HoopyFrood March 15th, 2011 6:56 PM

They're my favourite designs so far, apart from ole' Hilb's in game sprite, he definitely has a muffin top when he runs.

Yusshin March 15th, 2011 6:56 PM

What I don't get is Japan in every other game, they abuse blondes XD Naruto, Link, Zelda, Peach, and countless other things... But not in Pokemon.

Makes meh a sad bunneh

Lancelot-sama! March 15th, 2011 7:12 PM

At first, I died a little inside when I heard the names. After awhile of playing & stuff I got used to Hilda & then I'm somewhat getting over the name Hilbert. It's not exactly thaaat bad, although I did use his japanese for my file.

As for designs, I love them. The female's hair is fine. I mean they are based on more older protagonists than the usual 10-year olds. I can imagine a girl having hair that poofy/big wearing the kind of clothing the protagonists have.

Overall, I love them. I prefer the male a bit more, despite my own gender.

Saryka March 15th, 2011 7:15 PM

I prefer Hilda's design over Hilbert's, but overall I like them soooo much better than Lucas and Dawn. I just don't really like Hilbert's haircut and the fact that his jacket is unzipped at the bottom kinda bothers me lolllll :/ But their names, I can't... I just can't. I'm still sticking to my theory that Game Freak was on drugs when they were discussing the English names for the Unova protagonists.

Lynette March 15th, 2011 7:20 PM

I actually really don't like the female's design. Seems to... scantily clad... for lack of better words.

gengarcaninetales March 15th, 2011 7:26 PM

I think the characters look good but the names are ugly as all hell. :/

Blaziquaza March 15th, 2011 7:28 PM

The English names... ugh.
They are NOT suited for teenage-looking kids. They sound more like names for wizards and witches.

TheUnown March 15th, 2011 7:31 PM

Designs are good; English names are bad ._.
I thought they were going to be called Blair and Whitlea too; I would have preferred those names rather than Hilbert and Hilda >_>

solarowl March 15th, 2011 8:24 PM

I love both of their designs, pretty cool. But not their names. What kind of name is Hilbert and Hilda for a protagonist. I like Jett and Candice as well.

PKFL_531 March 15th, 2011 8:43 PM

I also hate the names given to the protagonists. To be honest, they aren't really fitting to the characters and they don't really sound like they should be named Hilbert and Hilda. Hilbert reminds me of something down in the deep rural south (and Hilbert as a character looks more urban-styled in culture) whereas Hilda sounds like a name that you give to people from Nordic and/or Germanic countries (whereas Hilda as a character seem more fit for a rural-sounding name). But, this is just my opinion.

I think that "Gavin" and "Melanie" are nicer, more fitting names rather than Hilbert and Hilda. Maybe because their Japanese names come from their word for transparent or clear, their names would be better if their names were also derived from words that meant clear or something close to it. Like Vitro(Esperanto for Glass) and Clara(Clear).

sshadow March 15th, 2011 8:43 PM

I myself liked the design of the heros but I would of liked the girl better without the hat because it seem kinda out of place.
But the names are pretty bad and I'm pretty sure the english programers picked the names.

Quicksand. March 15th, 2011 10:23 PM

I really liked the designs of the main character this time round. Hilberts hair is very stylish as i see boys my age walking around high school campus with his hair style, and Hilda is also, seeing how she has rather large hair. And you know what they say; "the higher the hair, the closer to god". XD XD

So yeah. I REAALLLYYYY like their designs. But their names are just so ugly. D;

~Ryukaa March 15th, 2011 11:25 PM

Their names are okay. There, I said it.
I don't think it suits them that much but, it's not awful.
I love the characters themselves though. They look brilliant. xD;

Meganium March 15th, 2011 11:47 PM

Wow, those names are a joke. But oh well, must get used to them. Doug & Whitney would be perfect choices for them. I was expecting the girl to be Whitlea (sp?) but that is nowhere close.

Sarcastic Prince March 16th, 2011 12:23 AM

Their designs are awesome. I have no opinions on their names, though.
I mean, c'mon! It's only a name! What's with all this hate going on here?

lamby101 March 16th, 2011 1:13 AM

Yeah the names a pretty awful, designs look good though.

Saikusu March 16th, 2011 1:39 AM

Miley Cyrus and Ashton Kutcher... That's who i see.

PlatinumDude March 16th, 2011 2:05 AM

I like their designs, especially the guy's, due to the Jaden Yuki resemblance, but I hate the names. GF should've come up with better names.

Bluerang1 March 16th, 2011 2:06 AM

Jett and Candie would have been AWESOME! :D

Even though they seem to be adult/Nordic names, I love them. Why? They both mean battlers which is what Trainers are in Pokemon. And these two are Trainers :)

The designs are the best so far. A guy wearing a hoodie! :D Only problem is that I would have switched the light and dark blue on the jumper around. Hilda is HAWT! And I now like short-shorts xD

Vrai March 16th, 2011 2:11 AM

I'm perfectly fine with the names and designs, but I think that Jett and Gwen would have been amazing names imo. :(

Ninja Caterpie March 16th, 2011 2:18 AM

The names are so weird... :x Their designs are coolsauce though. The girl is just win, and the guy is pretty cool too. Although, his face when you go into big battles (ie. gym leaders) is kinda... scary. :x

Zelda March 16th, 2011 3:22 AM

The names haven't grown to me yet, but the designs have always been pretty neat. I just can't picture a "Hilbert and Hilda" as the protagonists and to be honest, I expected more city like names for them. However, since I've named the female protagonist as the nickname I want, I barely see the set names for them so it's all good. d("d)

The only time I have seen Hilbert was when he became my partner for the Battle Subway but other than that, they aren't a big role depending on the protagonist you play as.

Sora's Nobody March 16th, 2011 3:53 AM

Hmm, Blanchard does not mean White in Frence, Blanc (as in Mont. Blanc) and blanche (some circumstances) DO.

ShinyMeowth March 16th, 2011 5:00 AM

I refuse to acknowledge, let alone use those names, so I stick with the Japanese ones. About the designs, I like Touko's, but... Every male design has been terrible in my opinion, and the new one keeps true to the tradition. So there I am, using the other gender as my player like I did back in the third generation.

Blanche is feminized white; Blanchard hails from that, and technically comes from the root word meaning "white".

Just as I'm sure Corvin doesn't really mean White Castle. Would you go around calling the restaurant "Corvin" from now on? I don't think so. It comes from some root word in old English surely, just as names come from root words.

Irene means peace, but I'm pretty sure that when the Greecians talk, they don't actually use "irene" in that context. It's derived from Greek somewhere, and it's them that came up with the name, just as Blanchard comes from Blanc which is French, and they added their nifty "hard" to the end to make it a name. It still means "white", but you can't go around saying "La neige est blanchard" because that makes absolutely no sense. It's a pronoun with a derivational meaning, not a noun that can be used as an adjective in itself.

Everyone's names have a meaning, but that doesn't mean that their names can be used in a formal context. It's just derived from something that means x long ago (or even to-date) and being used as a pronoun.

Spoiler:
Tossing it in there, I speak French, so I would have known this when posting :| I just figured everyone knew about derivations of names and how it's not literal.

Tox March 16th, 2011 6:31 AM

I think the designs are pretty good overall. They don't have anything too abnormal that could cause people to hate them yet they're not boring either. Their names completely suck though. I don't mind Hilda that much but the name Hilbert is terrible. There are so many good names out there so I don't see why they'd go with something so awful.

I didnt really think about the roots of the words. But I speak french too, fluently.

This, this, and a thousand times this ^. You only see the name on one specific occation, why does the name matter?
(I've got The100megashock with me on this one, woo!)

I'd rather complain about how people actually decide to battle on a high-speed subway, but then again I'd prefer shouting the name "Hilda" under those intense/dangerous moments over some japanese name I can't pronounce properly despite studying Japanese for two years >:[

Also, have some battle subway art. ^^

Oryx March 16th, 2011 7:36 AM

I've always hated the "pockets sticking out of the bottom of your shorts" style for girls. Even before seeing Hilda, I always said that if you were going to wear shorts THAT short, you should have to deal with the consequences of having no pockets. It just looks tacky, and accentuates the fact that the girl is wearing shorts WAY too short, if a normal pocket can't even fit inside them.

Therefore, I really don't like her design. It's stylish I guess, but it's a style I hate.

Yusshin March 16th, 2011 5:27 PM

I noticed when she throws the ball, the animation is a bit funny around the shorts - white stuff. I guess that's the pocket problem; never really noticed that her shorts where that short until recently ~_~

Himechi March 17th, 2011 6:22 AM

I don't like their names, but the charachter designs are so awesome I forgive them

Nateon March 17th, 2011 6:33 AM

I adore the style of the new characters and that they're older, but seriously, Hilbert and Hilda? They have gotta be the worst names yet =/

Daikenki March 17th, 2011 6:40 AM

Call me insane, but the names don't phase me. I actually like Hilda. Girl can own up to her name. Like Helga from Hey Arnold. You just gotta go with the flow. Hilbert on the other hand is lke this super nerdy name, that is sort of cute in an awkward way. Though I think nerds are cute anyway. :T

I'm also okay with their designs, except for the daisy dukes. But that's because I can't pull them off as well as she can. But her shorts are a tad too small. what's next? Is our protaganist girl going to be wearing a bikini? I understand she is older, but older girls are still modest when it comes to clothing. (until you get to the adult escorts, then they ruin our good image)

travisjb1990 March 17th, 2011 7:08 AM

I like Hilbert and Hilda. They are cool characters. I like how they look! They look awesome. I like their names too! They are different and cool names. I really like these two.

Ho-Oh March 17th, 2011 5:01 PM

I don't really like the names of the two protagonists, though I do love the design of the female. :) Hers looks so much better than the other designs of female protagonists, I guess she just seems most realistic to me, and she looks like she's full of life! I also like how you get dialogue of what she's actually thinking, too. As for the male, don't really like his design, looks kinda awkward.

Barn March 17th, 2011 5:05 PM

Their designs are the best yet - MUCH better than the other generations. Although their names sound like they should belong in another century - a really old one. Unova is supposed to be high tech and new {or at least that's how they show it} and these don't mirror that at all! It doesn't match. :/

Did Game Freak HONESTLY think fans would like these names? Ugh.

XtinaIsMeLuvinWWE March 18th, 2011 6:07 PM

I'm still getting used to the new names - but I have to say I LOVE Hilda's design :)

Hikamaru March 19th, 2011 1:04 AM

Hilbert and Hilda are pretty nice names. I call them Blair and Whitlea in fan fiction. I predicted the boy's name to be "Blake" and the girl's name as "Fiona". Both mean Black and White, obviously.

Tonko March 19th, 2011 5:50 AM

I like the names, I think they're just fine. And I don't really see what the big deal is if you don't like them, you only have to see them in the battle subway, if at all.

I like the boy's design, I suppose, it looks practical enough. I loathe the girl's design. Freaking pink again, and stupid shorts. I generally don't like the girl's design too much anyway, but this is the first time I've hated it. I started one of my copies with the girl thinking I'd get used to it like I have with the others, and the overworld sprite isn't so bad, but the way you see the trainer from behind for each battle.. I would have to stare at those stupid shorts so much... I restarted with the boy.

tjb90 March 22nd, 2011 11:19 AM

Hilbert and Hilda are really cool. I like them. They look awesome. They are really fun to play as.

XXIII March 22nd, 2011 11:22 AM

Not a fan of the names or the male character design. (mullets aren't very fun) But, I do enjoy the female design.

Aaron40 March 22nd, 2011 2:32 PM

Well you can name them anything you want anyway so it doesn't matter to me.

Bwazzam March 22nd, 2011 2:35 PM

Oh God, Hilda's shorts.
And she's what, ten?
:U

I don't really like her design too much. But Hilbert, he's chill.

Pkmn Trainer Touko March 24th, 2011 7:48 AM

My name isn't Hilda! Ewww!

Why didn't they just call me White? Or Touko? Seriously....Hilda and Hilbert are the most terrible names in the history of Pokemon.

You have the most terrible character design in the history of Pokemon. :U

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire March 25th, 2011 8:22 PM

I think they have okay names... not the best but okay...
I like their design though but I think they could have made them more older looking than they did (the look like they are 13...or maybe they are...I don't believe their official age has been said but I imagine them being 15...)

Shadow101thehedgehog March 25th, 2011 8:27 PM

I love their designs but hate their names. I just call the male Black and the female White. (Their names in the Manga if I remember correctly.)

moon_light March 26th, 2011 1:03 AM

They're my favorite protagonists in terms of design and I love their Japanese names, but the English names are terrible (the worst out of all the games so far I think)
I do like that they're designed to be older than 10 years old though

and I find it funny that Black is the only male protagonist not to have black hair xD

All names on the list above is better than Hilda and Hilbert.

As for the designs, I like both... except for Touya's shoes. XD
