L=A Removed Like/Dislike

Although, this is a very minor thing about the game, I ended up really disliking the fact that they removed it (mostly because I never realised how much I used it until it was gone >_<)

Sydian March 16th, 2011 3:19 PM

OMG. I was sooo pissed that it was removed. I usually multitask when I play Pokemon games, and it's SUCH a pain not to be able to click L and have it function as the A button. :/

Maelstromk March 16th, 2011 3:21 PM

sorry the poll should read "Do you dislike the fact that they removed the L=A Function" sorry, terrible wording on my part (so bad I voted in the wrong space lol)

Eurydice March 16th, 2011 3:22 PM

i never used it so i didnt even know it was gone :/

Razer302 March 16th, 2011 3:25 PM

I used to love this feature for when i was doing 2 things at once. I could use one hand to play and the other to tidy up, dry up, anything i was doing at the time.

Barn March 16th, 2011 3:49 PM

I didn't really use it, so I don't exactly care that it's gone.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire March 16th, 2011 4:06 PM

I don't think I ever even noticed...well I guess most people probably didn't either or why would they remove it :/ ?

bobandbill March 16th, 2011 5:23 PM

I didn't notice it or use it, but as it's a feature that didn't mean anything bad for those who didn't use it, I'm not really for it being removed if other people did use it - ah well?

Yusshin March 16th, 2011 5:33 PM

It was in Options, right? Never really paid attention, and never used it.

I don't think they have a good reason to have removed it either (like many other things >>)

Rawrinism March 16th, 2011 5:42 PM

I just realized that when I played Black. It was pretty useful for multi-tasking.
I even clicked L as A a couple times now but I can live. :D

Oryx March 16th, 2011 5:43 PM

I wish I had known about this sooner.

Nugg March 16th, 2011 5:44 PM

I never used it but my cousins love it haha.
I was more annoyed by the fact that I had to hold B to run. Unlike HGSS.
And my A buttons nearly dead so I also miss the fact that you could just touch A on the screen like in HGSS :(

Weber March 16th, 2011 6:58 PM

im very mad that its gone, and the fact you cant tap on the screen, now i have to hold it with both hands to get anything accomplished now.

and ive been using the l=a since sapphire.

Me too, Now that people mention it, I do really miss the auto run function too, I almost never used the touch screen in battles though, I'm just so used to playing with the buttons....

Saryka March 16th, 2011 8:18 PM

After reading this thread, I never knew how many people actually used that feature. XD; I thought it was so irrelevant for so long haha. I don't miss it because I never used it. Reading this thread made me understand its uses but I don't think I'd use it anyway.

CoffeeWolf March 16th, 2011 8:24 PM

I never used it either ^^; Had no idea it existed tbh... and I've played Pokemon games for 1000s of hours :|
Sounds convenient though

PokéSwimmer March 16th, 2011 8:38 PM

L = A was a pretty under-appreciated feature of the game. It was really helpful for multitasking. Hopefully they'll bring it back in future installments...

Legendary Silke March 16th, 2011 9:26 PM

Hmm... Losing the L=A feature? I understand why, though. It got new functions. I don't mind the loss, as it now serves new purposes, such as faster item list scrolling, box switches, move info shortcuts, and the like. (The poll options are confusing.)

PlatinumDude March 17th, 2011 1:42 AM

I didn't use the L button as the A button during my past gaming days, so I'm indifferent to this change.

yes I know, I'm sorry about that (I was muti tasking a bit to much when I was making the thread) The question should read as "Do you dislike L=A being removed?" or something simular

vaporeon7 March 17th, 2011 2:15 AM

It's not that big of a deal for me. I never used that function anyway. So I don't care much at all.

Tsundera March 17th, 2011 2:36 AM

I didn't even realise there was such a feature. In hindsight, though, I would have probably used it a lot if I knew about it; it would have come in handy so much :<

Arma March 17th, 2011 2:38 AM

I used the L=A option quite often, it was really handy in cases you'd need your right hand for something else. It is quite irritating to see it's gone.

BigIce17 March 17th, 2011 4:04 AM

Aw, yeah I didnt like the fact that they removed this either. ;(

Me too, to be honest until I came into this thread I didn't even know it existed lol

Volroc March 17th, 2011 7:15 AM

i never really started to utilize it til AFTER my L button started to mess up on me,& now that my L button doesnt work at all i really dont mind but if i ever do get to replace my ds i will miss that option :(

EJ March 17th, 2011 7:19 AM

Never noticed it D:

I multi-task too but I just use my right hand for the DS.

Sammuthegreat March 17th, 2011 7:19 AM

I never used it myself, but now I think about it I realise it could be quite useful for one-handed multitask-playing.

The more important question is, though: WHY ON EARTH HAVE WE ONLY GOT ONE HOTKEY?! There's 4 face buttons, two shoulders and the Select/Start buttons. Clearly A and B are in use, but why do we need X to open the menu? It was far better in HG/SS as a purely touch-screen menu. And why can we not use Y, L, R AND Select to register 4 items instead of one? It's annoyed me since I can remember that you can only register one item. Imagine if we could have the Bicycle, the Map, the Super Rod AND the Vs-Seeker all just a single button press away...

Not that this is the only UI inadequacy in Pokemon games. For example, why can't we choose to Fly to a city straight from the Map screen? Instead we have to press B, go to our Pokemon list, select our Flyer, then click Fly, then find the city all over again... Urghh.

Sorry for getting off-topic. I did answer the question at the top though...

bwburke94 March 17th, 2011 8:20 AM

I never used L as A, but I don't like that they removed Start as X.

Air Pichu March 17th, 2011 8:28 AM

I used it a lot on my old DS whenmy A button was broken and usable. Even now, after I have a DSi, I still miss it.

skyluigi2 March 17th, 2011 8:54 AM

Knew about it, never used it for more than 2 minutes. Just thought it was pointless.

-Totodile42

Oblivion Wing March 17th, 2011 3:49 PM

It was a function?? Meh...

Iceshadow3317 March 17th, 2011 3:55 PM

Lol,I didn't even know there was one like that I rarely used the L anyways.

.-Notched March 17th, 2011 4:23 PM

I really don't care about that option..

Steven March 17th, 2011 4:40 PM

Well, I only used that option on my GBA SP, mainly because I generally sit my DS down on a table and play like that. I don't usually hold it, so it's easier to press A than L for A.

So I don't care.

Ho-Oh March 17th, 2011 5:10 PM

I don't really care tbh. I think it was more annoying when I accidentally pressed L for something. Though I think it's only handy when you need to do fast things in Pokemon games...and that's not very often. XD (I swear something comes to mind but I can't remember it).

Giraffe March 17th, 2011 11:18 PM

I remember using it in previous games, but to be honest, I forgot about checking if it was in Black/White.

King Gumball March 18th, 2011 12:08 AM

I don't care :/ I never really used that option anyway, so it doesn't bother me.

Bluerang1 March 18th, 2011 12:54 AM

Seeing as my L and R buttons are busted, the removal doesn't bother me much. But they didn't have to remove it.

RYOUKI March 18th, 2011 7:01 AM

There was that feature? J/K, of course i know there was such a thing. I didn't really use it so I really don't care that it's gone. I actually see no point in that. o_O

Phazon March 18th, 2011 11:03 AM

I went to turn L=A on at the first chance I got. It sucks that they removed it :/

I know! I really miss not holding down B and the touch screen A.

I didn't even know there was an option use L as A so I don't really miss it much.

Guy March 18th, 2011 11:12 AM

When I first got White and looked for the option L = A and didn't see it, I was like "Whaaat?" D: I used that minor feature a lot when I was multitasking and playing the game in one hand. Just by habit, on occasion I still press down on 'L' as a substitute of 'A' and I realize, "Oh wait, it's not there anymore; Great!" ):

JP March 18th, 2011 11:24 AM

Never knew it even existed, but I can see how it'd be useful. Shame they got rid of it.

Exactly my feelings on the matter. I never really paid much attention to the option of setting L as A, but I've used Start as X ever since it became an option. I've used Start to activate the menu for years now, and I have no desire to change that.

fenyx4 April 14th, 2011 11:33 PM

Hmm...well, I've hardly ever used L=A in Sapphire, FireRed, or Emerald, to be honest. I remember using it once just to see what it did. XD The only time I pretty much use shoulder buttons for anything is in Super Smash Brothers (I use it sparingly in Pokemon Stadium 2, and it's essential when I play my friend's copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 3)...

However, I did press the shoulder buttons much more often in FireRed, due to the Help System (the type matchup list was very helpful when I faced obscure type matchups). The ability of the Help System acting as a "pseudo-pause button" during battles also helped.

So yeah...I hardly ever used the L=A option, as I'm an A-button masher, but it sucks for the people who did use it. It doesn't seem like it would be that much trouble to have included it in BW. :\

This. We go from having-to-hold-B to-run, to the awesome auto-run of HGSS, and right back to having-to-hold-B-to-run. -_-

You know, I was only thinking about converting X to a hotkey button as well, but you've got a very good point. I mean, aside from the L=A people, other users basically never use the shoulder buttons, so why not give them some use. Same thing with the Select button (previously a hotkey in Generation 3). I mean, we could conceivably have 5 hotkeys by using X, Y, L-trigger, R-trigger, and Select and designate them to bring up 5 different items in the overworld!

This. That dampened HGSS a bit for me, especially since it was present in DP and HGSS's immediate predecessor, Platinum. Now what - you only use it to advance past the title screen, or what? (and IIRC, even that function is redundant as the A button does the exact same thing)

The Start button has been the menu button since Generation 1, and Start=X alleviated things by permitting two different methods of accessing the Menu in the newer games that changed the Menu access button...

Personally, I think Start should continue being the menu (for those of us that prefer buttons as opposed to touchscreens), with Select, X and Y (and L and R, when the player isn't using L=A mode) all becoming hotkeys. When you've got three to four buttons going unused, and you have to hold two buttons just for a certain action (running) when another button could easily toggle it, it's a problem...

This. I don't see the harm in keeping L=A and Start=X in the games, and I wish they would return in the future, along with HGSS's interface for touchscreen users... I guess L=A was thought to be going unused, but according to this thread, the majority opinions seem like either people used the feature like heck or people weren't even aware that it existed. XD

Jack Kentnon April 14th, 2011 11:56 PM

I always thought it was a pretty silly idea during the GBA era, and when the DS era started, I use the touch screen. So.... Yeah.

bugsy555 April 14th, 2011 11:56 PM

i miss it a lot. i loved being able to play with one hand and have a smoke in the other...i am currently writing a letter of complaint to gamefreak. heres what i have so far.
dear gamefreak,
you guys suck......

ill sort the rest out later

Misheard Whisper April 15th, 2011 2:23 AM

I always used the L=A function in previous games, and loved it. Made it so easy to play the game with one hand. It was great, and I was extremely pissed when I discovered it was gone.

s0nido April 15th, 2011 2:45 AM

It didn't really affect me. I noticed they'd removed it, but ever since they moved the start/select buttons to the other side of the console after the GBA to the NDS Lite, I never really saw the need for the button any more. I used to play one-handed using only one side of the console, since the movement buttons, the start button and the L=A button were on one side of the console. Now, they've been shifted around the console I lost the need for the L=A function. Besides, for some reason my L button always stops working in all my past DS'es. XD;

phonastik April 15th, 2011 6:05 AM

Ohhh, I used to use this all the time. Being able to play Sapphire with one hand was something I never appreciated until the feature was gone... :(

Azurina April 15th, 2011 4:28 PM

I really miss it, since I have a habit of playing using only my left hand while I'm lying on my side, and it's really inconvenient and kind of painful actually (I have small, unflexible hands) to reach all the way over to the A button.

Rai April 21st, 2011 10:45 AM

I only used it occasionally. I forgot it existed over the years honestly. So its removal doesn't affect me much.

The 100 Mega Shock April 21st, 2011 10:49 AM

That's just stupid.

Game Freak, masters of UI degression with every game.

AusDon April 21st, 2011 10:51 AM

Pretty sure the poll options should be "like" and "dislike".
Opposed to yes and no.

But, yeah. I used L quite a lot. It made it easier to use your hands and the stylus simultaneously.

Kokuo April 21st, 2011 10:57 AM

I personally never used it. I have a friend who was kind of annoyed it was gone though, he liked being able to play with one hand.

Boarbeque April 21st, 2011 12:34 PM

Considering my L button is broken I don't think I ever even knew of this existing.

hokala April 21st, 2011 3:05 PM

I never even knew you could do that! O.o

Kjt April 21st, 2011 3:13 PM

This annoyed me so much. I loved playing with one hand and doing something with the other. Like I'd play and eat at the same time. It was also handy when trading between two DS-es. I don't actually see why they removes it. Seems like a stupid thing to do :O

Rionix April 21st, 2011 3:16 PM

damn theres an L=A function for previous pokemon games???!

wish i could have a chance to play the previous gens...

Starrodkirby86 April 21st, 2011 3:41 PM

When I played HeartGold at school, I usually kept hammering that L button, especially when level grinding, so it was a little disappointing at first to see it gone.

However, it really didn't matter after Black/White, now that I'm once more used to playing the regular way again...Still, would be nice to play with one hand conveniently, haha.

Cookiez May 7th, 2011 9:05 AM

My L button is broken so... .3.

hiff8 May 7th, 2011 9:12 AM

I aways liked that i could play one hand when i had it now i have to use 2 DX

2Cool4Mewtwo May 7th, 2011 9:28 AM

There was an L=A Function?!?
