iMovie and HD Formats.

So I am running iMovie as my current video editing software (looking to get After Effects / Final Cut Pro is I get serious about it later on in life) and I read that iMovie does not support AVCHD as a compression for HD video. I also read, that if you are on an Intel Mac with the latest updates in software and stuff, that it can read it fine.

I'm currently looking for a camcorder (with SD memory not HDD) and this little error thing made me reconsider what cameras and stuff to buy. So before I make a purchase, I want to get it right so I don't need to worry about return policies and all those annoyances.

EDIT: So according to the Apple website, "If you use the AVCHD format you will need a Mac with an Intel-based Core Duo processor or better." I am using a 2010 iMac with 3.06GHz Intel Core i3 processor. Is that better than the Core Duo processor?

That is just fine. Any Mac computer made after Jan. 2008 will have a processor better than Core Duo. (there are even a few from before, but I'm 98% sure that every mac after 2008 has a Core 2 or better)
