Take a look at their base stats: (Emboar in Red, Heatmor in orange) HP: 110 / 85 - difference of 25 in Emboar's favour Attack: 123 / 97 - difference of 26 in Emboar's favour Defense: 65 / 66 - difference of 1 in Heatmor's favour Sp. Atk: 100 / 105 - difference of 5 in Heatmor's favour Sp. Def: 65 / 66 - difference of 1 in Heatmor's favour Speed: 65 / 65 - no difference. Comparitively, Emboar is a much better physical attacker than Heatmor whereas Heatmor is constructed more for special attacks; however, the difference between their special attack stats is almost negligible. The advantage Heatmor has over Emboar in terms of defense and special defense is, on the other hand, extremely negligible. With greater HP and attack, Emboar boasts far more destructive power with physical attacks like Flare Blitz and Brick Break, not to mention his dual-typing of Fire/Fighting which gives you more coverage overall; with Blaze in play, Emboar's capacity excels even further. Heatmor packs a silly 5 special attack more than Emboar, which is hardly worth giving up all of the previously mentioned advantages that using Emboar as opposed to Heatmor provides. They both have really terrible defense and speed though. Essentially, what I'm trying to say is: I wouldn't really advise swapping out Emboar for Heatmor because you're not going to be better off. If your style of play is more suited for adapting Heatmor to your team though, by all means, feel free. |
My Tepig and his evolutions utterly demolished everything. Like, no joke he is/was beast. I... don't know what you're doing wrong, as I recall my Tepig fainting maybe /once/ during the /entire game/. Given, I stopped using him much around half way through.
|
Yea...Daikenki is the strongest Isshu starter
the pig and snake...not so much but I guess it depends on how you play the game because I over level my teams for the Gyms Level 40 pokemon? meet level 50 |
I don't think the starters are underpowered. My Oshawott is very strong!
|
I never really used the starters throughout my journey, but they seem reliable. They actually seem quite reliable, and somewhat like the 4th gen starters in terms of reliability. I mean, Serperior is pretty much a defensive threat which can dish out awesome attacks with Coil support, Emboar is essentially a fire type Hariyama, which helps in situations, and Samurott seems like a sturdy, but semi-fast hard hitter.
|
I wouldn't say underpowered. Well, this is just ingame anyways. Almost anything works ingame, if you train it well and give it good moves. A good nature and some EV training would help, but you can survive without doing that. I use my starters for every journey of mine. Actually, it takes me a lot of time to decide what starter to get.
|
I think Emboar is just so slow. Every other thing gets to attack him first. Of course mine is a traded one from GTS, wearing lucky egg (Huge XP!). However My starter was Snivy and while its very fast and with Coil it is a beast vs things that its grass moves are good against it doesn't get much apart from grass.
Anyway my main one I used was lilipup which is now a 57 Stoutland and did wonders all through the game. Im at Victory road but havn't defeated any of the elite 4 yet as im training other pokemon I got through GTS (Faster leveling). But anyway sorry to go offtopic but I think Emboar is powerful but he is very slow, so other pokemon hit it often first, which is why it gets damaged alot. |
Weaker than all the other starters before it? Mostly. Underpowered in general? No. Emboar is normally made to smash away huge chunks of HP from defensive Pokemon in a battle so sweepers can come in and finish the job.
Yes, Emboar is rather slow. Not that I care!:) |
I've been playing with Emboar for a while, and he massacred practically everything in its way. I guess it depends how you raised it.
|
Depends on your playstyle I guess. My Servine JUST. DOESN'T. DIE, which makes it really something compared to the other starters. Now if it only didn't have such lackluster coverage...
|
I agree! I've got all three starters and i do find they are weaker than the starters from previous gens...apart from my dewott, he's beast! :D
|
before my samourott was underpowered when it was first evolve but it got strong by learning strong water attacks when it was last evolve.
|
I only played the game with Snivy so far and it was pretty gruelling at first, the game isn't easy when you need to rely on tackle, vine whip and wrap. Leaf Tornado didn't have enough PP either so my starter kinda fell behind the rest of my team when I ran out of PP for Leaf Tornado until I got Leaf Blade. After you get Leaf Blade and Giga Drain, it's pretty smooth sailing from there.
|
Yeah. I love leaf blade, since its got nice PP/power :)
|
Its pretty obvious the pig is completely worthless :/
But i swept Cynthias entire team with just my serperier who was 10levels lower than all her pokemon during the course of the entire fight, i was laughing my ass off about how my snake could 2shot an eagle, and 1shot a garchomp XD Coil is by far the best status move yet. |
My best friend felt the same way with Pignite, and he told me that a few of his friends had the same problem that Pignite just keep on fainting. Luckily I did not have this problem because I started out with Oshawott and he showed no problems at all
:t354:TG |
You are using your Pignite wrong. Mine hardly ever dies, it actually survives with red health most of the time.
Emboar is really only underpowered when you fight a special attacker. He can hardly live those kinds of hits. Ive no real problem with physical hits though. |
I don't find Dewott underpowered at all. It learns a base 75 power attack early at level 17 (Razor Shell as Oshawott before evolving). It's OHKOed-2HKOed almost everything it encountered with that move, with Water Pulse as a backup STAB. It also has Revenge and Fury Cutter, but I stick to its STABs for attacking.
|
Really Servine was actually quite powerful. But then again I only sent it out for types it was super-effective against. Honestly most of the Pokemon at the beginning have quite a low defence so it's fairly even.

Serperior by far is not underpowered, it has the best stat division I've seen for a grass type other than Whimsicott! Coil takes out everything. |
I was quite happy with my Samurott. Razor Shell was a really powerful move for a long time, and later when I got Surf I knew exactly who would learn it.
But then again, I used really few pokemons through almost the whole story, so Samurott ended up pretty overlevled. |
I replaced my Emboar with the most ****in' Fire starter ever, CHARIZARD <3
|
My Samurott (after the E4) seemed to always be my lowest leveled Pokémon, don't know why :(
|
ITT: ridiculous generalizations.
Emboar is a monster. Mine has only fainted a few times. I've tanked so much with him and even beat Clay's Excadrill. Serperior, on the other hand, I felt was ridiculously underpowered. I keep hearing "use Coil" but I'd much rather not rely on a stat buff when grass types have weaknesses to five types. I haven't used Samurott much but he's definitely a nice asset to teams and generally reliable. |
Equipping an Eviolite to a middle stage starter is one of those things i like to do. Especially on the slow (at first, Flame Charge) Pignite.
Pignite and Emboar pretty much rely on the foe being paralyzed OR being slower. By slower I mean that piggy should have used Flame Charge once or twice. Makes me wonder if Eviolite Wartortle is as good a Rapid Spinner as I think it is. Samurott was awesome with Aqua Jet & Razor Shell. paired decently with Basculin, though I usually box Samurott because Basculin is just awesome with Adaptability, Waterfall, Aqua Jet, Soak, Crunch. Found a Basculin with Hidden Power Psychic 68, heh. |
