Cheren? Bianca? But I wanted to name them Jack and Jill!

Yes, lame title is lame. XD

So, with Pokemon Black and Pokemon White we are unable to name our rivals, similar to Pokemon Ruby, Pokemon Sapphire and Pokemon Emerald.
What do you think? Do you think the characters being called Bianca and Cheren suits them and you wouldn't name them anything else, don't mind or would you have liked to have named them, whether after your friends or whatever. XD

Personally, I don't mind. Although I normally like naming my rivals after people who are close to em so they actually feel like "rivals", they have enough character to make them seem like rivals anyway.

JP March 27th, 2011 9:06 AM

I don't mind at all as I usually never know what to name my rivals haha. I tend to just name them by their official names anyways, so didn't bother me one bit.

solarowl March 27th, 2011 9:13 AM

I just name them what there official names are. I don't really mind. Plus, I think those names suit them. Or I've just gotten used to them.

Xyrin March 27th, 2011 9:16 AM

Lol at the title. I want to name them Blondie and nerd. xD

Eurydice March 27th, 2011 9:24 AM

i wish we had the option i love naming my rivals after my friends

Devil Flamingo March 27th, 2011 9:25 AM

Like posters above me, I name them whatever their official name is anyway, so if I had had the option to name I'd have named them "Bel" and "Cheren" anyhow. I generally use the Japanese name instead of the English name b/c it's more suiting (i.e. Jun > Barry) but sometimes I like the English name better (i.e. Brendan, May).

Barn March 27th, 2011 10:06 AM

I don't really mind. In HGSS, I named my rival Silver, soo...

blue March 27th, 2011 10:12 AM

It makes it more unique if you ask me.

Cherrim March 27th, 2011 11:52 AM

I wish I could've named them. :/ I really don't see any reason why we couldn't. It's not like there's voice acting or anything. I guess the names are hard-scripted in instead of just variables that the script grabs from but... would it have been so hard to implement that? :(

.Eevee-Chan March 27th, 2011 4:47 PM

I don't mind, I would have named them their official names anyway.

tente2 March 27th, 2011 4:54 PM

It really bothers me. The name 'Bianca' is so ugly ugly ugly. Now I'm tortured to hear that name forever--I would've named them Jeremy and Aelita.

Cookies to whoever gets the reference.

TheUnown March 27th, 2011 4:55 PM

I understand why people would like to name their own rivals and such but I'm one of those who would use official names anyway so good thing they already did it for me XD.

hackerofdarkness March 27th, 2011 5:11 PM

I'm one of those people that really doesn't mind after all we can't think of any good names cane we?

Yurusumaji March 27th, 2011 5:14 PM

I never rename the characters in my games, so to me it's perfectly fine this way. If I could name them, their names would be quite foul indeed.

Nakuzami March 27th, 2011 5:27 PM

I don't mind, I happen to like their names. Though I liked Belle better than Bianca, but i'll live.

Hmm...more similarities to RSE. More clues, more proof that the remakes are coming soon :P

SeanTheOriginal March 27th, 2011 6:04 PM

You may find that in some games, as with life, you don't always have control over the names of everyone. This may come as a shock to you, but yes, the names of other people can be out of your control. In time, I think you'll be able to accept this as reality and be able to GET OVER IT!

Dark Piplup March 27th, 2011 6:11 PM

I don't really care. Though the names do fit them somehow.

Woobat March 27th, 2011 6:19 PM

I don't mind it at all. It saves me the fifteen minutes of stress in which I would be sitting there trying to think of good names before ending up giving them the default names.

Oryx March 27th, 2011 6:26 PM

Yup, in the game where I travel as a teenage girl, control massive, legendary creatures with powers to create and/or destroy worlds and use them to fight other people with similar monsters, while saving the world from an evil team, I want realism.

The Nightmare March 27th, 2011 10:09 PM

I don't mind if they are named anything.

Ho-Oh March 27th, 2011 10:28 PM

I actually like the names of Cheren and Bianca, and at least when we're referring to the rivals we all know who they are instead of just known as "rivals" :(

Ice Car March 27th, 2011 10:31 PM

I don't give either way. In fact I sort of like their names, but I'm usually devoid of ideas so if I even had the choice I would go with their predetermined names.

Most_W4nted March 27th, 2011 10:35 PM

Hmm well personally I would have liked to name Cheren Black and Bianca Grey or something =P But I heard that Cheren means Black in Bulgarian anyway =D

The Noob Hacker March 27th, 2011 10:36 PM

I don't mind that the option isn't there. Sure, I like naming my rivals. but I'm fine with that ability taken away from me. Still, it sort of takes away from the experience when I can't replay the game, name my rival something inappropriate, then laugh for about twenty seconds when it appears that one of the characters in the game is insulting my rival.

Still, not that much of a problem.

MegaSlowBro. March 27th, 2011 10:49 PM

I actually liked not having the option of not being able to name my rivals. I never know what to name them, so it was a relief that I didn't have to skip over it at all. It also made the beginning flow more smoothly without having another long pause at the start.

vaporeon7 March 27th, 2011 10:54 PM

I wish I could name them. I don't mind the name Bianca but I don't really like the name Cheren.

King Gumball March 28th, 2011 1:24 AM

I like it this way ;) I dont care for naming my rivals (though I used to do it just because I could) and I like Bianca and Cheren as their names. Used to them now. And they are in-game characters so I think they should have their own names.

I agree to what JP said. I never know what to name them either. So I just tend to pick any of the 3 or so options given ;D

Zenfyre March 28th, 2011 1:30 AM

It would've been nice but at least their regular names are decent...unlike Hilbert and Hilda. -_-

PlatinumDude March 28th, 2011 2:05 AM

I don't mind being unable to name Cheren and Bianca into whatever I like because I usually have a hard time thinking of names for my rivals when given the chance to do so.

Sarcastic Prince March 28th, 2011 3:24 AM

I tend to name the protangonist, and the rivals with their official
names. It's actually better that the game didn't give you a choice
on naming your Rivals.

TheGoddessOfDiscord March 28th, 2011 4:48 AM

I think you can't name them yourself because some people (including myself) tend to give their rival(s) offensive nicknames and GF doesn't like it.

Rionix March 28th, 2011 4:57 AM

Their names pretty much suit them so yeah, i don't really mind. Cheren == cool and Bianca == Klutz. I like it :D

Hibaru March 28th, 2011 4:59 AM

Cheren and Bianca pretty suit them well I think.

GreenBeece March 28th, 2011 5:01 AM

Nope, I don't mind. It's easier when you name only your player.

Satoshi Ookami March 28th, 2011 5:07 AM

I like the fact that we have rivals that cannot be named :D
It's not like it's for the first time :) And I think it's going to continue :)

Pokemon Trainer Touko March 28th, 2011 5:10 AM

I wish I could name them. I'd probably name them after my friends. :3

Citrus Knight March 28th, 2011 5:12 AM

I hate how they re-named Belle, Bianca in the American version. Her name is so much better as Belle instead of Bianca. Let's set aside the fact that I hate a girl name Bianca AND Belle is just prettier.

amberrelf March 28th, 2011 3:01 PM

I like Cheren's name cuz I get to laugh at how girly it sounds. xD

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ March 29th, 2011 6:48 AM

If they hadn't named them, I'd probably have given them generic names anyway. Though just for fun, every time I'd face Cheren in battle I'd call him "Galactic Commander Charon" simply because their names are so similar. And they both wear glasses.

kelario26 March 29th, 2011 8:27 AM

You didn't get to name your rival in R/S/E, which didn't really matter because you only battled him once.

Tox March 29th, 2011 8:57 AM

I'd have liked to name them after my friends because they'd feel like proper rivals. Instead of being annoyed by them (it's not their fault; I'm just like that), I might actually find them interesting. I've always enjoyed games where you have the option to name the characters more than the ones where you don't. I suppose it's just two people that show up now and then. Not the end of the world.

Bluerang1 March 29th, 2011 9:12 AM

I don't mind. In fact I like it. It's more RPG that way, and having to name 3 people... oh goodness >!< I like when things are official. Like Wally.

~*!*~Tatsujin Gosuto~*!*~ March 29th, 2011 9:35 AM

I dont mind not being able to name the Rivals because I would usually give my Rivals bad word names or names that indicate that they are weak, suck and need to stop raising Pokemon in general

I have to admit, Cheren does sound awfully close to Sharon. XD

Anyway, I only just realised I didn't vote in my own poll. XD It seems most people don't mind, which doesn't suprise me. :P
I am not posting just to bump up my thread, I swear. ^^'

LokemonBlack March 31st, 2011 12:25 PM

Cheren and Bianca don't sound that bad. They go well and you will get used to them like Jessie and James in no time. =]

Name April 22nd, 2011 6:05 AM

Cheren is a dumb name

First of all, what kind of name is Cheren anyway?
It almost sounds like Sharon, which in english is a girl's name.
To me it seems like the translation team did a poor job of Anglicizing his name.
Furthermore it isn't really a name that strikes me as bing the utmost of intelligent names. I thought he's supposed to be like this battle wiz or whatever.
He consistently loses, and even then he wants to become the unova champion? I mean really? He's a fool.
He meets the current champion, whom you'd think that Cheren would recognize, and acts like he's never seen the guy before. Now we all realize that the champion is well celebrated, and is seen on TV. Clearly Cheren isn't such a battle wiz.
I would like to move that Cheren never be called Cheren again, and a new name is given to him.
Okay.... so maybe this can't be dumb but stilll....
Cheren is a dumb name.

Amore April 22nd, 2011 6:31 AM

Hah, the only times I stray away from defaults are by calling Gen I rival Blue / Gary (Can't remember which one is default) and deciding Barry should be named Pearl after the PokéSpec character.

NamelessGuy April 22nd, 2011 9:17 AM

Every time I see Cheren's name, I think "Shaaaaaarrrroooon!" Yeah, Ozzy Osbourne reference right there. Still, it never fails to crack me up.

He seriously needs a name change, though.

Molts April 22nd, 2011 9:23 AM

I would have just named them what ever name was the default in the list the usually give you. The only rival I ever named was Silver from G/S, since I thought it was dumb that he had red hair, but his name was silver, so I named him Red... little did I know...

Chiar April 22nd, 2011 9:25 AM

I don't mind but the name Cheren always seemed annoying for me. Not a big issue, though.

Seeds Horizon April 23rd, 2011 2:52 PM

Doesnt really matter to me. Just glad that theres two instead of the usual one. Makes it much more diverse :D. There names are better than what i would have came up with, though Cherens is a bit ehhh..Biancas suits her personality perfectly. Though I probably would have named Cheren Black or White, or Bob ;_;.

Amore April 23rd, 2011 2:59 PM

I could've given them names...but to me, Cheren and Bianca seem to suit them now. Also, I normally give my rival the name of the other version (Silver, Blue / Green...although Barry is often Barry, not Pearl, due to the presence of Dawn), which would've been complex as there isn't a third version. Obviously, in the third version, if we got the option to name them, I'd be Black, one'd be White, and one'd be the third version, and it'd all work.

s0nido April 24th, 2011 5:13 AM

I'm not good at naming things, but I was quite annoyed at having the names of the rivals set to Cheren and Bianca. I would've liked to at least have the choice of being able to name them whatever I wanted. It was the same for me when I was playing RSE and the rivals' names were set to May and Brendan. -.-

Rai May 5th, 2011 2:12 PM

I honestly didn't even realize it at first.

I don't mind at all actually. It gives them more character in my opinion. I usually just named my rival the first thing that came to my head, which has no meaning. I feel like Bianca and Cheren both have meaning behind their names.

Oh, hey, I remember Code Lyoko...

On the subject of the thread, I'd rather they kept the ability to name your Rivals. Not for myself, though, as I always just use their official names anyways, but it doesn't really make sense to remove a feature that no one had complained about at all, at least that I know of. I like looking through their alternate names, too, just to see what they came up with... Eh. I guess it doesn't really matter.

adamant57 May 5th, 2011 7:30 PM

Bianca and Cheren means White and Black respectively so I think it really suits the theme. But personally I dont mind not being able to name them. gives them a sense of identity

Hikamaru May 8th, 2011 6:52 PM

I voted for the dislike, but Bianca and Cheren seem to be the best names yet!

Good job on the naming, Nintendo!

TheGr8 May 8th, 2011 7:03 PM

I wish I could have named them, because I found some really cool RL friends that I didn't know played Pokemon anymore, and I was going to name them after them.

Gothitelle. May 8th, 2011 7:58 PM

I wanted tew name ze boy "Whiny" and the gurl "Clingy". (except when she's annoying it;s kinda cute~)

ZeldaStrife May 8th, 2011 8:22 PM

now that you mention it, the fact that I cannot name my rivals in this game bothers me. it gave the game a real sense of personality to the individual player. :(

Legendary Silke May 9th, 2011 2:22 AM

I think I like the names Cheren and Bianca. Why? Because it fits them, and also sounds pretty good. I'm not that good at making up names, so I guess I'm sticking with the names... Usually, I just stick with the defaults.

Shining Raichu May 9th, 2011 2:39 AM

I would have loved to name them, simply because Cheren and Bianca are crap names for those people.

Melody May 9th, 2011 4:48 PM

Despite the numerous battles that you have with Bianca, she really ISN'T your rival...she simply chooses to stay with the Professor. I don't really know if the opposite of this is true when you select the male trainer, or in Black version, but it wouldn't be too hard to allow you to nickname the actual RIVAL character.

HOWEVER~!

Because of the Game Sync feature, and children's penchant for mischief...namely such a naughty deed as giving your rival a dirty name, or one with a four-letter word in it was too much for Nintendo to bear. XD

So, yeah...I'm not surprised that they cracked down on that little bug in the code for B/W simply because there are people who name their rivals these naughty things. A game save is likely not so easily cleaned up...and they can't just delete it, they'd be FORCED TO BAN YOUR ID. That would disrupt service for too many people, and force them to restart the game at least, which isn't quite fair. No doubt bans would have been global to the entire game at least.

So, In short; I'm not too upset about not being able to name them. I'm content with their current names purely because they're really not that bad. If you disagree because you got attached to their Japanese names, then that's all your fault; for a lapse of clear thinking. No anime in history has ever come out the same dubbed, and that goes doubly so for translated games and anything else translated. Languages have differences...so comparing a Sub to a Dub is like comparing Apples to Oranges. :/
It just doesn't fit logic, and is a silly reason to prefer one over the other.

Seliana May 10th, 2011 1:17 AM

I'm too lazy to really get upset over it. I actually think the names sort of suit their personalities.

If I'm upset about anything, it's not being able to name Cheren. Because if I could, I'd name him "Fodder". Because if he screamed "Romantic Fanfic Fodder" any louder for the insane fangirls who pair characters off in the games in fanfiction, they'd rename "Screech" exactly that. Romantic Fanfic Fodder. XD

xDaisuke0 May 10th, 2011 4:13 AM

I dont really mind.

But I think the reasoning of this was to make it more of a story? And not like a *insert yourself into this scenario* kind of thing? It makes it less personal and more wholesome and matches with the rest of the game. They are NPCs AND rivals.

Ah, i had not thought of that. haha, yeah; my fiance went back and played thru Red version during finals week at college and i know he named his rival something inappropriate. I digress; it is shame, but that may be the reason that Nintendo disabled that feature. since the PKMN games have entered the wi-fi world, you never know who you'll meet out there.

DarkAlucard May 10th, 2011 11:45 AM

Well, i could probably name them after a couple of friends but is ok, i really don't mind the names, at least their names aren't Black (Cheren) & White (Bianca) XD

thats what I do. i've never named my rivals anything inappropriate, just usually a name that means something to me, like one of my friends, as you said. It makes the game more real. :)

COMBOY May 10th, 2011 12:00 PM

I always put the same names when I start to play any version of Pokémon from the beggining, of course, I put the name COMBOY, or CONVOY sometimes.

For Cheren, I would like to name him "MAGNUS" or "NEMESIS", just like I call all the rivals, and for Bianca, maybe I would name her "BOTANICA", because her costume reminds me on a plant. :P

And the most weird is that every single rival of the games looks like one of my friends that play pokemon haha.
Blue: Ubaldo but i named Uvald
Silver: Ivan but i named Vann (also is uses Vann as his name in is game)
Pearl: Luis, i keep it the same

And yeah, it makes the game more real ;)

hiff8 May 10th, 2011 1:45 PM

I would always name my rivals something funny like i would name them Retard! and then when Prof.oak would stop them from taking the fist pokemon he would be like " No that kid get to go first Retard!" ohhh man those were the days...

Zelda May 10th, 2011 5:39 PM

Meh, I don't really mind the inability to name our rival, since either way I had always given them their official names that were announced. Though it still wasn't necessary to remove that feature. What pro did that give for our rivals? :B

2Cool4Mewtwo May 10th, 2011 6:37 PM

personally I've stopped caring about this issue after 2nd generation... I just named them official names or one of my friend's names after I got bored with naming them in an immature manner, mainly when I was only a kindergartener playing pokemon blue... (ex. STUPID, DUNCE, etc)

Pouinks May 11th, 2011 3:24 AM

I wanted to name them something a bit silly, like I did with the first Pokémon games when I was a kid.
I gave my first rival the name of a guy I hated in school, and beating him at every fight felt pretty good :)

But I wanted to call the new rivals something like Bonnie & Clyde, Sonny & Cher or something ridiculous like, it would just make me stupidly giggle :D

xx Pouinks

Ces soirees-la May 11th, 2011 3:37 AM

I probably would've named them something inappropriate.

~Touko May 11th, 2011 4:36 PM

I really dislike not being able to name them, and N. I wanted to name them the following names:

N = Dash
Cheren = Kevin
Bianca = Tiffany

But now I can't. Thats personally the only bummer I have with this game. It's not that big of a deal though, really. ^.^

Cid May 12th, 2011 1:32 AM

I didn't really care about the names of my rivals since first gen. I guess that's because whatever you name them, they'll still turn out to have the personalities of their official depictions...which tends to make me name them as such.
I wouldn't say the same for the main protagonist (which I always envisioned as the player), but for Cheren and Bianca, their official names are okay enough for Game Freak to not allow their renaming.

Xena May 12th, 2011 1:39 AM

I personally would have liked to name my rivals. Bianca would have been Callisto and Cheren would have been Ares. I named the rival Ares in most of my other games.

bwburke94 May 12th, 2011 10:52 AM

If the RS remakes change Brendan's name (as he is completely forgettable and most people play as him anyway) I WILL SHOOT THE TRANSLATORS' HEADS. jk

Anyway, Cheren and Bianca fit the characters quite well, especially with the theme naming.

Speedx1994 May 12th, 2011 11:00 AM

ben and jerry wouldent be bad either or haag en daaz...

fenyx4 May 17th, 2011 9:02 PM

Hmm...well, it's not that much of an issue to me in retrospect, as I typically use "anime/official" names for the rivals anyway. I refer to the rival Blue/Green of RBY/FRLG as Gary Oak in all media. I keep on trying to think of a name for Silver of GSC/HGSS, but Silver is just ingrained. No good default name was given, though we already have another Silver of Pokemon Chronicles who met Richie... Wally's name irked me simply because it resembled Wallace too much (who is a prominent Gym Leader/Champion) as a dimunitive form.

As for BW, my main concern is with "Bianca", AKA Bel/Belle. Cheren bugged me in retrospect with the similarity to the feminine name Sharon, but I'm getting accustomed to it. I mean, every other localization except the English one uses "Belle", which, alongside white, possesses the additional meaning of light and beautiful :3. Now we have two Biancas in the English localization, yet no Belles. :( I don't see why we couldn't have Bianca of Pokemon Heroes and Belle of Black and White, to help in preserving uniqueness.

I typically support the ability of customization being granted to the player whenever possible, though I'm all for the pseudo-retention of "official" names. The 'intended, official' name(s) of the writers for the rivals could simply be listed on top in a list of suggested names as Generation 1 games did. Alternatively, the 'intended' name could appear as the default placeholder name if the player does not decide to enter a name for the rival. Best of both worlds, IMO - the player can customize the rivals' names if he or she wishes, and the writers can still convey their preferred name for the rivals in a non-intrusive manner. If the Generation 1 games could accomplish such a fitting compromise in rival naming, I don't see why BW weren't able to.

Same here. I picked "Dislike" but to be honest I don't mind too much, (like enough for it to ruin the game) but it would have been a nice addition to name both Rivals.
