Your favorite Japanese food?

Short Version:
What are your favorite Japanese foods? I was hoping to find some new things to try when I visit Japan in a couple years.

Long Version:
I'm planning on going to Japan through my college's exchange program in a couple years, and am wondering if there are any Japanese foods that I would actually like. I've watched all of cookingwithdog, and runnyrunny999's videos, to see if they ever make anything that looks good to me, and I honestly found nothing. This is mostly because I dislike sauces in general, and I hate it when things are so mixed together that I can't tell what I'm eating anymore... both of which, they love to do. (Also, a lot of the things they make are either fried, or otherwise unhealthy, which I would like to stay away from.) I'm thinking maybe if I ask the masses what their favorite Japanese foods are, something might stand out to me though.

Contrary to popular belief, not everything that is fried is unhealthy.

As for my fav Japanese food, it is probably sushi.

I've never tried Japanese food but I'd really like too.

Weeaboo Name April 6th, 2011 4:52 AM

Just the rice dishes, i'm vegetarian so the seafood stuff is off the menu. I do like seaweed though.

Mr Cat Dog April 6th, 2011 4:58 AM

Anything cooked in a teriyaki style is good for me. Chicken, beef, lamb, fish... all taste wonderful when they've been teriyaki'd up to the max!

Pokemon Trainer Touko April 6th, 2011 5:35 AM

Yeah, same here. Only thing I've ever had was "Chinese" food, which I suppose is a bit like it? I'd love to try some, legit, Japanese food at some point.

I like a lot of my food mixed up. Since you don't I'll just mention other types. Here are some meal-type foods that you can get in restaurants:

Donburi: It's a bowl of rice with something on top. That's all. Could be meat, fish, veggies, etc. Very common, very simple, but usually filling because of the rice.

Soup Curry: It's sort of like mixing things together so maybe you won't like it. It's a curry-like soup broth so it's a little spicy and in it are a bunch of veggies (which will probably depend on where and when you order it, but I remember always seeing okra, potato, carrot, and pumpkin included). Usually has some rice on the side. Very very tasty. I think it's a regional thing in Hokkaido though, so you might not find it easily outside of there.

Yakiniku: I don't actually like this because I'm vegetarian, but other people seem to like it and it's a pretty simple meal. Your table has a kind of grill in the center and they bring you your meat raw and you just slap it on the grill piece by piece until you're happy with how it's cooked. Sauces are optional.

Other tasty things you can get in Japan are anman (azuki beans/paste filled buns), daifuku (a mochi ball with more azuki bean/paste), and just mochi itself is good. I also think you should try out the different flavors of things you can find elsewhere, like sodas (melon flavor is great) and soft cream (sesame flavored is surprisingly good).

I've only had ramen, and I enjoy it, so yea I pick ramen :D

Rainy Day April 6th, 2011 5:31 PM

Various Katsu and Tempura... Japanese curry is also quite good.

LilacArcanine April 7th, 2011 8:07 AM

Onigiri is an awesome snack food. Sushi too. Cold noodles are also pretty epic.

I wish I could try an okinomiyaki- I'm going to a Japanese restaurant next week so I'll try it there if they have them.

Palkia April 7th, 2011 8:08 AM

The only Japanese food I eat is Sushi. I can hardly get any other kind of Japanise food where I live.

Azure Revolver April 7th, 2011 4:08 PM

I live in Hawaii so I've eaten quite a few...

Though I'm kind of unsure. Probably Oden.

Cherrim April 7th, 2011 8:19 PM

Hnnng. Seafood udon (in soup) has been my favourite as of late. Japanese food is probably my favourite type of cuisine and I try to have something new whenever I'm at a Japanese restaurant, but I always find myself coming back to udon lately. :3 I really love tempura and most of the basic sushi, too. And quite often sushi comes back into play as my favourite thing to have when I'm out at a JP restaurant but for now it's the udon.

It's been a while since I've had anything Japanese though. Hope I get a chance soon!

Anything cooked in a teriyaki style is good for me

LilliputianBB April 12th, 2011 3:23 AM

sushi sushi sushi sushi sushi, can't get enough of the stuff.

kidpunk April 12th, 2011 6:56 AM

Mochi ice cream. Delicious dessert that everyone should try at last once.

Lily April 12th, 2011 8:31 AM

Hm, I would say sushi but I get a little sick of it because my dad owns a sushi restaurant. Right now, I am very fond of dangos, I can't get my hands on them enough. Also love riceballs and soba noodles.

cookingwithdog's channel is amazing. Makes me hungry every time I go there. :D

My favorite would have to be he various incarnations of Sushi - Nagiri, Sashimi, Tempura, etc. We're getting a giant Sushi tray appetizer for my Birthday, I'm reeeaaaalllyy happy about that. :D

Edsbob April 15th, 2011 3:51 PM

I love Somen (favourite) and Udon for mains. I ate a lot of and loved Tempura prawn (especially my grandmother's) because the region my family is from have adopted that as their staple.

For snacks I love Shiratama, Omochi and Azuki (combine them for Oshiruko, yum). And any type of Dango. And Ichigo Daifuku. And Taikyaki. And Green Tea Soft-serve cones.

Of course you have to try the Japanese sushi trains (raw salmon/tuna nigiri= holy food). If you're going to Osaka try the Takoyaki and the Okonomiyaki. Not only that, but they have all sorts of unique flavoured lollies too.

Try anything and everything! Each region in Japan has their own flavour!

Trinity Cross April 15th, 2011 3:55 PM

Hmm....tough choice. But, in the end I guess I'd have to pick ramen. Yum.

Misheard Whisper April 17th, 2011 5:06 AM

Pocky

Can't say I've tried very much in the way of actual Japanese food, now I think about it. I tried sushi when I was about ten, and didn't like it much. I think I would if I tried it again, though, yet I've never had the stones to try, for some reason.

LilacArcanine April 19th, 2011 2:33 PM

Let me just add- Japanese curry is awesome.

It's not as spicy as Indian curry, nor as thick, but it has a sorta sweet yet savoury taste. With katsu cutlets it gets even better.

WhiteWizard April 19th, 2011 6:14 PM

SUSHI1.... and Kimchi noodle bowls.

King Gumball April 26th, 2011 3:48 AM

never every posted in J-E before

I like sushi the best, I don't see what other Japanese food could be nicer ;)

Nutella April 26th, 2011 3:49 AM

Definitely sushi and sashimi. You have to try that stuff, it's delicious! :]
Couldn't agree more. =) I LOVE raw fish!

Quote:

I've also eaten some sort of food in a bowl
Japan has lots of food like that. What was inside it?

Quote:

Ramen is delicious as well.
Ramen is my ABSOLUTE favourite... though technically, it's of Chinese origin. I love Teriyaki sauce- it's best with chicken, imo. Teriyaki eel is quite nice too...

Oh, and how could I forget Tempura! Fried prawns FTW

DopamineDarling April 27th, 2011 3:13 PM

Sushi and sashimi here, I love eating them.

Moon Light May 23rd, 2011 6:37 PM

Sushi
- I would like the Sushi with the shrimp, and it's delicious!
Noodles
- I really like noodles, any kind of flavor :)

blackmorale May 29th, 2011 6:20 PM

Miso Ramen is good. My favorite is (shrimp) tempura. ♥

razzbat May 30th, 2011 5:04 AM

my mum whos jap always cooks jap food. you won't need to worry about unhealthy quilavaking, japan has the longest life expectancy for a reason.
and i don't see where your looking when you saying you don't like your food to be mixed together so much, most japanese dishes aren't based around mixing. their mostly set apart, eg norimaki sushi which has seaweed on the outside, rice inside, and some sort of meat in side that. nigiri is even more simple, just rice with a bit of fish on top.
traditional japanese meals consists of a bowl of rice, miso soup and a side dish. the side dish is usually a meat dish which can be stirfry, sashimi (raw fish), fried fish, etc etc. one amazing thing about food in japan is the cost. almost everything (other than fruits) is ridiculously cheap. but if your even more of a cheap ass like me then you can manage with bento boxes from convenient stores. they usually are like a traditional meal (minus miso soup obviously) and have seperate compartments for each bit of food.
trust me, you will enjoy the food in japan.

fireflare May 30th, 2011 5:05 AM

mine is eel with rice :) yum

shinysweety June 2nd, 2011 10:31 AM

NurseBarbra June 2nd, 2011 10:53 AM

I can't remember the name, but theres these japanese sweets with edible wrappers...
Strawberries~....

Musashi June 9th, 2011 5:10 PM

As cliche as this sounds, my favorites are sushi, udon, and onigiri. I like just about anything with seaweed in it too like miso soup.

Brittani June 9th, 2011 8:18 PM

My Japanese step aunt gave me some tofu in Hawaii and it was the best thing I've ever tasted! Apparently you can actually order tofu in Hawaii in the local restaurants and it comes in a white box with red letters. I don't know if chopsticks were included though, my aunt has her own.

So, tofu would be my favorite Japanese food.

Shiny Gardevoir June 9th, 2011 9:06 PM

I like tempura... But lately, I've been glomping a lot of takoyaki~
At first I was ok with the taste, but now that I'm used to it, I keep eating them for lunch ^^"

HaloSonic June 14th, 2011 4:38 AM

I enjoy a good Rice Noodle Ramen, and I like sushi too.

Captain Hobo. June 14th, 2011 3:23 PM

My favorite Japanese food is the rice. :D

zoo3891 June 18th, 2011 5:52 AM
