All DW Pokemon art revealed

Source

All the Dream World artwork recently got revealed.

A brief rundown: When the Dream World was first released, the older Pokemon and a select few Unova Pokemon received their Dream World artwork, such as Pikachu and the Unova starters. However, some Pokemon, such as Timburr and Ferroseed, did not receive their DW art at the same time as the others. Now, those Pokemon have gotten their own DW art and can be viewed here. (some scrolling may be required)

So, let me ask you something: What's your favorite DW artwork among the 646 Pokemon who received it and why? What's your least favorite one? Do you like the Sugimori art or the DW art better?

My answers:
1. Gallade's DW art, because it looks better than its Sugimori art, IMO. Archeops' DW art also looks intimidating.
2. My least favorite one would be Excadrill's; it looks a lot like its Sugimori artwork. Cryogonal's DW art scares me; it looks like it's staring right at me.
3. I like both equally, because some Pokemon look better in one version of their artwork than the other.

The Nightmare April 16th, 2011 11:15 PM

I like Ninetales and it is also my favourite and I like the Dw art and Sugimoris. What does the pictures look like?

Meinfoo April 16th, 2011 11:22 PM

The colours seem off but it is in a very nice pose!

Pikachu-dance! April 16th, 2011 11:26 PM

Pikachu and snivys :) they are just plain amazing :)

Morgnarok April 16th, 2011 11:51 PM

Victini looks like it is praying xD

Zenfyre April 17th, 2011 12:33 AM

I love the Dream World artwork so I'm glad they're all released now. I don't really have a favorite; I just like the style in general. Also, did anyone notice Kyurem's claws are transparent on his artwork?

Ho-Oh April 17th, 2011 12:56 AM

Right now, shockingly, my favourite is Crimgan/Druddigon. I also like Thundurus'. There are other stunning Dream World artwork, but I'm surprised that the art has made such unappealing Pokemon look awesome - Crimgan especially. It also makes DPPT Pokemon look good!!

http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/9/9a/621Druddigon_Dream.png
^The art, so ya'll know what I'm talking about.

Overall, I generally prefer Dream World art, because it makes the Pokemon usually have awesome poses and looks much cleaner. :x I just prefer that style of art, anyways.

Palkia April 17th, 2011 1:14 AM

I find the Dream World Artwork a nice diversion from the more realistic style of the Sugomori art.

My favorite would be Crimgan because of her oversized invisible sub sandwich she appears to be enjoying.

Morgnarok April 17th, 2011 1:27 AM

Victini will have to be my favorite due to me noticing it looks as if it is praying and i find that kinda funny xD

JustinDestruction April 17th, 2011 9:49 AM

I like Pikachu, Raichu, and Blaziken's especially.

CrowSama April 17th, 2011 10:06 AM

My favorite has to be Electrike/Manectrics DW art. Not sure why, I guess because the Sugimori artwork makes them look too serious and not very friendly. My least favorite is probably Zoroarks, because it looks to similar to the Sugimori art.

Oryx April 17th, 2011 10:12 AM

Wow, I really dislike Pikachu's actually. It looks much better in the anime. Lickitung's freaks me out when I'm actually in the Dream World and he's already waiting in a screen...I jump every time. Bellossom is adorable though. And Sunkern, surprisingly enough. Other ones I like:

-Larvitar
-Linoone
-Kricketot
-Whimsicott
-Dwebble
-Eelektross

batmon April 17th, 2011 10:23 AM

I'm not really a fan of any

They look like an 11 year old drew them; the proportions on some look terrible

Zayin April 17th, 2011 10:33 AM

I like most of them, they simply look like anime artwork because of their cel shading. However, some of them have awful proportions like Pidgeot. Its head is super big! I prefer Sugimori's art in general since his coloring is more artistic; everyone uses cel shading.

Brawly April 17th, 2011 10:42 AM

I love Zangoose's style in DW.

The 100 Mega Shock April 17th, 2011 10:47 AM

The Dream World art is pretty much generally awful.

Disregarding some of the worst art with proportional errors, lacklustre colouring and even design inconsistencies, the entire style looks like a beginner's foray into drawing vector artwork in Flash, with chunky, machine-perfect line widths and an awful shading style - when the shading is there (which is rare because most pieces are almost totally flat-shaded) it barely gives depth to the pieces, while the shading is coloured barely darker than the original colour, neither does the hue of the colour change in any significant amount (Compare how Sugimori colours Reshiram to how it's done in the Dream World art - in Sugimori's piece he takes on a sharp blue tint in darker areas, whilst in the DW art he turns a slightly darker shade of grey)

Completely agree with this. The bad proportions are what ruin a good handful of these pieces. They're an interesting change, but I'll stick to the Sugimori artwork.

Logan_AT April 17th, 2011 1:39 PM

They're fairly neat--vector/cel shaded style and Ken Sugimori's style are two different things and it isn't fair to compare the two. The Dream World style is meant to be flat-shaded to work with Flash rather than something meant to stand on its own (like in an art book). The vector art is also supposed to 'pop' out of the page where the backgrounds are made to look like a story book illustration, which it does. There was probably a limited color palette that the designers had to stick to (owing to the nature of the program) which might explain why the colors are so off on a number of the Pokemon.

There are a few neat poses in the Dream World art and I think it works for the medium. Personally I like Sugimori's art style better, but it's always interesting to see how other artists interpret the same designs with their own medium.

LouBeatYou April 17th, 2011 2:00 PM

I like Krokorok, Shinx, Mothim, and Pignite especially :)

NamelessGuy April 17th, 2011 2:34 PM

I'd say it's a 50/50 ratio.

King Gumball April 17th, 2011 2:45 PM

The DW Art has made so many ugly pokemon look great XD Some of the art is a little crappy but most of it is great! Crimigan does look good in that pose still don't like it XD and so does a lot of others like:

There are so many more I like, but some I dislike too.

Flash does not have a limited colour palette - and neither does the SWF file format in general.

Yeah, I doubt they had a limited palette if the background has that many colors.

I was thinking web color swatches for some reason...hmm.

skyluigi2 April 17th, 2011 10:22 PM

I love the Wobbuffet. :D
It's caption should be: WOBBUFFET! :)

Also, CASTFORM. Yay :D
And for some reason, Tirtouga looks surprisingly blue... I thought it had a grey shell?
Vanilluxe looks just like it's in game graphic :)

I mentioned this in someone's blog IIRC, but I love Jirachu's DW art. It's so adorable. :3 Lugia's is pretty epic too. :D

chaos11011 April 18th, 2011 3:00 AM

^ That is the Best DW Art there is, in my opinion that is.

Adam. April 18th, 2011 5:32 AM

I love how most of the Pokemon have different poses as to what we see in their sprites, such as Vuljina soaring instead of just sitting their; just gives them a bit more class. :)

johnny18 April 18th, 2011 5:42 AM

Dragonair and Kyurem looks awesome ^_^

TheGoddessOfDiscord April 18th, 2011 8:36 AM

Azelf. I don't know why. Maybe the pose, looks a bit like an opera singer or an actor/actress.
http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/d/d5/482Azelf_Dream.png

Also Heracross. I didn't know it had wings!!

Yes, that is one thing makes the artwork more interesting. Also beacuse it's not the usual Sugimori style, it's something meant to be different. I don't see why people should call the style lazy due to lack of shading/thick lineart; it's more-so a simple yet still effective style.

All in all, I like the dream world art, as it gives us a new alternative to the seemingly-bland, Sugi Art. I especially like the light colors used in the DW art of many Pokemon.

PlatinumDude May 6th, 2011 4:03 AM

I'd like to see a bit more discussion here, so I'm bumping it.

Anyway, I'm taking a liking to Hydreigon's DW art:

It looks a lot more intimidating than its original art.

I actually totally dislike everything about that art work for Hydreigon :/ I don;t like how the tip of the tail and the legs are drawn and I don't like how the eyes of the two smaller heads are closed nor how the main head has no pupils. the belly is far too round also, but that is just me.

Thingula May 6th, 2011 7:10 AM

It looks like there was very minimal planning in the design and the artists just went with the "Ehh. I'll improve as I go" motto. Some are great, but others.... Well... I did better than that when I was 10, messing around with Flash :P

hiff8 May 6th, 2011 2:43 PM

How would you even get castform in there in one of its alternate forms

Hikamaru May 6th, 2011 11:10 PM

I like Miltank's pose.

Ambipom looks even better like this!

Oshawott looks so cute!

The Dream World art for the whole evolution line of Vanilluxe is pretty creepy in design, imo. XD Even the Dream World art for Vanillite looks dumbfounded, and it's the only one I like out of its evolutions.

I love the Dream World art for those two! It really fits them or just how I see their "personality" as, very well.

Aw, I think GameFreak should've made Victini hold out its peace sign, but I guess they went for something different for it. :( Either way, it still looks pretty nice. My only complaint on the pose made is that it looks more of a gentle, quiet and careful Pokémon in that design, and not that cheery.

Agreed! There are some however, that look better with the pose they strike in their sprites though. :P

Haha, Azelf looks cutee. :3 Though the pose seems kind of awkward to me, I thought of Azelf to look more like a careful/fierce type. This one looks cheery and bright. :B

First time knowing Heracross had wings? D: It looks adorable in that design though.

This would be my first time taking a look at Golem's Dream World art. Meh, not one of the best ones out there, but it's alright. Though I can see where you say it looks a bit 3D, where it's rocks bulge out anyway.

So buff! n_n

But I have to agree with you, the colors given for many of them are really interesting, and their poses aren't as bland. Like Adam. said, the design difference between sprites and the Dream World was a great idea.

Yes, keep the discussion going on! Make your opinions heard, you all. x)
Though the art for Hydreigon looks bland to be honest. The eyes and its pose as a whole is what makes me think so. Its body is a bit too round too, and the tail just looks out of place, if that makes any sense. That's just my opinion though.

Here's some more DW artwork opinions by me:

Piloswine looks so fluffy!

Roselia was one of my faves, like this pic!

Best Manectric artwork ever! Love it.

Buizel looks happy!

Buneary looks cuter than ever!

Love the coloring. Skuntank is one of my faves.

Love Gothorita's pose in this pic.

Male Frillish looks bright and true blue!

Female Frillish looks pretty in pink!

Great beautiful Reshiram pic! Nice.

Awesome badass Zekrom pic! Cool.

Wyatt Fire May 10th, 2011 8:58 PM

So... what happens when I try to tuck in my Genesect or Keldeo?

Gothitelle. May 11th, 2011 7:33 AM

My favorites are:

Gothitelle <3333333333 she's just sooo keeoteee

Hydreigon <33333333 very cute and adorable, charming and badass!

Giratina! <3 She/He looks cute here XD I want one!

Misdreavus~ she's adorable! and her eyes are too cute <3

Hikamaru May 22nd, 2011 6:47 PM

Might give some more DW artwork:

Best Yanma pic ever! Love it.

Zebstrika looks so cool!

Love the DW artwork of Vespiquen!

I love Staraptor's DW artwork too!

Swadloon looks good!

Elgyem looks so cute!

Lilligant looks so beautiful!

Pansage, Pansear and Panpour - best artwork of the three!

The 100 Mega Shock May 23rd, 2011 2:46 AM

That's probably because the Monkey trio were traced from either Sugimori's official art of each Pokémon, or the reference art he drew for the sprite artists to use.

It's harder to mess up that much when you have a good base, although even then some proportions leave much to be desired.

Cherrim May 23rd, 2011 1:51 PM

Most of my favourite Pokémon look really derp (Houndour) or else their art is essentially just their normal Sugimori art (Cherrim) which is really, really disappointing. XD; Though apparently Cherrim's sunny form is there. Wonder how you get that. n_n;

Nosepass seems to be dancing though, which is fun! Awww and look how cute Vanillite is!!

Pokemon Trainer Touko May 24th, 2011 1:14 AM

I like pretty much all of the DW artwork, they're all very simple and elegant. <3 The only one I dislike is Shikijika:

http://media.pldh.net/dreamworld/585.png
:/ The colours doesn't look right

AyameHikaru May 24th, 2011 6:54 AM

I love Grimer's pic. He looks so shocked! Eelektross looks surprisingly awesome.

I hate electrike. :/ WHY did they have to use that pose???

Half and half. Some I like better, some not so much.

cockatoo777 May 24th, 2011 7:33 AM

krookodile's art is scary lol

Calamity May 24th, 2011 8:01 AM

I'd have to say Scizors is one of the best by far, he just looks slick haha. But the worst has gotta' be Probopass or 'Pedopass' which I shall now call it since looking at its DW art. :|

Really? Seems fine to me. If anything, I'd say the way its eyes are drawn looks odd, rather than its colour. Infact, it seems a lot like the in-game sprites in terms of colour tbh.

Its body is a much too strong shade of yellow compared to other depictions of the Pokémon. Most dream world artwork has a weird choice of colour going on.

Artwork should not be coloured the same as a sprite.

blue May 27th, 2011 2:08 AM

I think the majority of the DW art are brilliant.

Zhinc May 27th, 2011 1:04 PM

Uno!: I love Feraligatr. It's wonderfully drawn and very in character.
Dos!: I hate Pikachu. Too cartoonish for my liking.
Tres!: Um...I dunno. I don't really have much of an opinion either way...=/

2Cool4Mewtwo May 27th, 2011 1:39 PM

I approve Mewtwo's DW artwork... might use it as avatar later :)
