Running Shoes! [ #31 ]

Should've you obtained the running shoes earlier?

I've noticed a few people that have found this an issue, actually - I was meant to make this ages ago, but recently a post reminded me of it!

Basically, in route 2, you're given the running shoes (which enables you to run faster when you press B). Usually, you're given them in the starting town (with one exception), but this time you're not. How do you feel about this? Do you think you should've got the running shoes at an earlier point, or maybe you just don't care? As an added question, do you mind that you have to hold down on B to use them, unlike in HGSS, which allowed them to be used by selecting something on the touch screen? Share your thoughts!

If you have any ideas, let us know! We may not use them straight away, but we will eventually. :D

Starrodkirby86 April 30th, 2011 10:30 PM

The Running Shoes came at just the right time. Since it was really at the beginning, what I mainly had there was just to enjoy the experience of a new generation, so I didn't really mind if it pretty much was a fine and dandy stroll ~

I shortly missed the Running Shoes being on constantly in HG/SS. I guess it's pretty much the same opinion with that and L=A... They'd be nice to have back! =3

What I wanted to come earlier actually would be the Bicycle. It was way too troublesome to traverse everywhere in just simple Running Shoes. After the tiring sprint through Skyarrow, I knew I needed to get a Bicycle ASAP.

Shorty- April 30th, 2011 10:34 PM

Lol, I didn't pay that much attention so it didn't bother me. Although the HG/SS option the keep the running shoes on at all times would have been nice, but oh well. Since it was a new place I took my time, so I didn't use the shoes too much until later on.

Binary April 30th, 2011 10:59 PM

It didn't really bother me at the time. My concentration was diverted more towards having fun and exploring.. and I didn't even notice that I hadn't received running shoes yet. For me, I think it came at around the right time.

Not having to constantly press the B button and enabling the running shoes with the touch screen was a nice feature introduced in HG/SS. Yeah, it's pretty sad that we weren't able to do the same in B/W, but it didn't really bother me too much. :/

agentwaffle April 30th, 2011 11:31 PM

This time around I didn't really notice how late I got them, didn't phase me I guess.
But in HG/SS, I personally didn't use the auto-run feature. I had it set to Hold B for running, since when I DID have the auto-run toggled on, I was still holding be from habit, and it was more comfortable than not holding it.
As for the L = A that Starrodkirby86, I miss that much more. I can't talk on the phone with one hand, and play pokmon with the other as easily. Though L = A isn't part of the Original post :/ (Might want to include that in the discussion? If not already done)

Sydian April 30th, 2011 11:34 PM

You get them after the first gym In FRLG, so getting them on route 2 in BW is a blessing when compared to FRLG. But I was afraid I was never gunna get them, lmao. "k did i miss the running shoes or so-- OHAI MOMMY!"

That's cause we already have one :)

Anyways, I'm kinda annoyed it isn't in your hometown, mainly cause I've replayed Black a looot and the start of the game is the most tiring tbh. I just want my shoes straight up ;__;

Azure Revolver April 30th, 2011 11:52 PM

I voted yes, but it was really somewhere in between. It is still early enough in the game and not far from the first town that it doesn't bother me, but I usually can't wait to get the running shoes and want to move on.

Legendary Silke May 1st, 2011 12:47 AM

I wasn't bothered at all. I think you can reach Route 2 pretty quickly, so it feels fine. I find having to hold the B Button actually comforting. Why? It's because not holding it feels off. I love a run button. Not holding it in HGSS sure feels odd, while fast.

This, really. I wasn't disappointed when your mom randomly called you and came to give you the Running Shoes, especially since it was so early-on in the game. While I do miss the HGSS Running Shoes mechanics I'm okay with holding down the B button to run. It makes things feel more... nostalgic, I guess. :)

Mew~ May 1st, 2011 3:16 AM

Well actually in the original games (or is it just FRLG? xD) you are given them in Pewter City, and in HG/SS your given them by that old guy in cherrygrove, so it isn't really that much of a difference, not a very interesting topic to say the least...

On the topic of a touch screen button, I never really used it in HG/SS, I just used B - It would just seem a shame to change that when it's been the same for sooo long. :3

Osha_say_wott?! May 1st, 2011 3:38 AM

This is my first time ever using the running shoes so I definitely was bother by how late I received them. I use the running shoes on a semi-regular basis, anyways.^^ And I like holding down the B button to use them. Because in video games; holding down button = go faster. ;D

Amore May 1st, 2011 3:46 AM

I missed the touch-screen control. However, I'm glad they decided just to stick to B, as it's easy to switch between on and off, and I hardly use them anyway.

Also, they're not received late...in Fr/Lg you have a gym badge before you get them!

Tropical Sunlight May 1st, 2011 4:39 AM

We received the Running Shoes quite early, compared to FireRed/LeafGreen.
So, no, I wasn't bothered by it. :)

Zeffy May 1st, 2011 4:43 AM

I weren't bothered with it tbqh. I feel that it was just given on the right time. Not like FRLG, like the others have said.

And Mew~, you were only given a Running Shoes at the route next to Pewter in FRLG. There was no Running Shoes in RGBY. =S

blue May 1st, 2011 4:48 AM

I didn't really use them in B/W, I can never be botherd to hold down the B button, they shoulda kept it the same as HG/SS where you click to keep them on even though I still end up holding B. They are a great addition nontheless.

PlatinumDude May 1st, 2011 5:14 AM

I didn't mind not getting the running shoes in Nuvema Town because there wasn't a lot of walking done early on. And yeah, they should've kept the running shoes mechanics from HG/SS.

Kevin May 1st, 2011 6:06 AM

I was bothered by how long it took until I got the running shoes (I don't like walking so slow). Oh and I never used that little tool HG/SS had for the running shoes, as I like holding down B better.

FangedFreak May 1st, 2011 6:10 AM

FOr me it wasnt that bad, i was still getting used to the game cos i havent played since yellow, so for me they came at a good time i think :)

Dshoe May 1st, 2011 6:53 AM

For me there wasn't an issue. At the beginning of all my pokemon games I notice I don't really care about time, how long things take, etc. I leave the battle scenes on and take my time to enjoy the scenery, but after 4 or 5 gyms I turn them off and run everywhere. I wish they had the run button though, I liked that a little too much. =/

Guy May 1st, 2011 7:08 AM

I'm fine getting the running shoes on Route 2. It's like Syd said, at least it's not like FRLG where don't get them until after the first gym. Plus, the characters don't walk as slow either. To be honest, I never really think of the running shoes much until I get that call from my mom. Then, I'm all "Alright!"

As for having to press down on the 'B' button, I was a little irked by that when I first got the game considering I thought of it as a step back from HG/SS. Now, it's a normal thing like before, so it's not so much of a bother. Still, would have been nice if the feature had been kept. Perhaps in the third installment.

Bluerang1 May 1st, 2011 7:27 AM

I minded T_T Though it made us take the beginning of the game slowly and not rush it, I liked that :)

calister17 May 1st, 2011 8:07 AM

love running shoes, i hardly ever use the bike...

solarowl May 1st, 2011 9:19 AM

I didn't really mind. It was just the right time, actually.
Well, maybe it was a little late, but I was too excited to notice because I just wanted to move forward as fast as possible.

Nakuzami May 1st, 2011 4:58 PM

I don't mind it at all. It makes zero difference to me.

Also, I only used the touch screen button to constantly run in HGSS like once =/ so that doesn't make a difference to me either.

big NATE alpha May 1st, 2011 6:35 PM

I actually thought it was the perfect time to get them. I didn't want to rush through the beginning, and you can't honestly say getting to route 2 takes that long.

What did irk me is removing the always-on feature, but only because you get the bike long after the most annoying part of your journey to not have a bike for: SkyArrow Bridge. I was rather annoyed that I had to hold the B button down the entire time I crossed that monstrosity :/.

Xander Olivieri May 1st, 2011 7:22 PM

Well...Technically you always get the Running Shoes after you go through most of the tutorials for the game. D/P/Pt you get them in your hometown yes, but this is after you already left your home town and went to the lake. You receive your Starter, go home and get involved in a reason to travel, then you get your shoes.

HG/SS you have to go all the way to Cherrygrove and talk to the guy that gives you the run down of what is in a town. The old man gives you the shoes.

Even in the game it was introduced to took a short while to get them. You have to go save Birch, then travel to the second city, into another route, have the Rival Battle, then go back home to get it.

So roughly its:

R/S/E: Little Root --> Route 101 --> Oldale Town --> Route 103 --> Little Root (Skipping other cause its faster headin home)

D/P/Pt: Home --> Lake Verity --> Home (Possibly the fastest.)

B/W: Home --> Route 1 --> Accumula --> Route 2 (Like very few Major battles 2-3 at least I think)

They all get to the same point at roughly the same speed, but it feels like I get the Running Shoes faster in Black and White than I did in any other game.

Fix'd the question for yah.

Was not really bothered by when the shoes were gotten.
Other stuff of convenience were gotten way too late for my liking (bike & HM Fly).

pokewalker May 2nd, 2011 3:25 AM

They were given way too late, sadly... In the third version they should let us obtain them right in the start.

Shining Raichu May 2nd, 2011 5:08 AM

They came way too late, I'm not a patient gamer, I get over slowness really fast. I was beginning to think they weren't going to come at all until Mom gave me the Xtransiever call.

Astinus May 2nd, 2011 11:18 AM

I really didn't mind at all. It made the beginning of the game slower, but that gave me ample opportunity to explore Unova and experience how new everything was. When I finally got the Running Shoes, they were nice to get, but I didn't use them right away.

I do miss the automatic running feature that there was in HG/SS, but what can you do? Though there are some times when I don't want to run in B/W, and it's easier to just stop holding the button.

ElectricScyther May 2nd, 2011 3:23 PM

This minor delay was unimportant. It's only if you have to wait as long as in FR/LG that it gets annoying.
And in HG/SS I never tapped the screen to lock the running shoes on. I'd just hold down B to run and let off when I wanted to walk.

Zelda May 2nd, 2011 4:40 PM

^ Agreed. I'm pretty much used to holding down the B button that it's become a habit, lol.

To be honest, I don't think I had even worried about when I would have be able to get the running shoes when first beginning. I was more interested in finally getting to play the games, which I guess counts. XD I don't really mind the little wait though.

Gulpin May 2nd, 2011 6:23 PM

The timing was fine for the running shoes because the experience of the Unova region was fine for just walking. However, I wish they didn't take out the no-holding B feature that HeartGold/SoulSilver had. That was probably the most dissappointing part D:

Rai May 3rd, 2011 1:47 PM

I think they came at just the right moment. It's not like you got them half way through the game.

dieter57 May 3rd, 2011 2:45 PM

i didnt mind getting them on route two at all.
i was more irritated by not being able to click them on and leave them on like in HG/SS

RedDeath64 May 3rd, 2011 7:00 PM

I didn't mind not having the running shoes earlier but they should have kept the HGSS method of running.

The Eagle May 4th, 2011 12:38 AM

Wasn't really that bothered to be honest. I was more interested in the storyline and checking out the funkeh new graphix.

It doesnt matter about the touch screen button to me either because even in HG/SS i always help down the run button anyway, kind of a fail I know but i've been doing it since they invented running shoes so why stop now? ^_^

--

Yeah i was quite happy and i had completely forgotten about the running shoes till I get a call from Mom. She gives me the shoes.... thanks muchly.... but how did you get here without a pokemon....?
Yeah it was fine, i use my bike anyway

Oharo May 4th, 2011 1:43 AM

I always ran in R/S/E. Sure, it wasn't as fast as a bicycle, but it was convenient. I suppose it was helpful.

vaporeon7 May 4th, 2011 4:35 AM

I think they were obtained a bit too late. Even though I didn't notice it much the first time in White because I felt I needed to explore everything and take it slow, I did in Pokemon Black. I was disappointed that they didn't have the 'keep on' button like they did in Pokemon HG/SS because I really liked that feature but I guess I have gotten use to holding down B again. I just think walking is so slow.

Ω Ruby and α Sapphire May 4th, 2011 11:02 PM

I dont mind when i get them. It was nice for a change, as well i was exploring around anyway so i didnt need them to much. It would be good if the button on the touch screen would come back, it was useful.

Count May 5th, 2011 1:47 AM

I always get annoyed at the start of each game, when you don't have the running shoes yet. It's so sloooow. So I voted for the first option.

Also it's 'should you have', not 'should have you'. ;)

OneofFour May 5th, 2011 9:42 AM

I felt like it came too late, considering how I wanted to move through the story at a blistering pace.

Zaspien May 6th, 2011 2:27 AM

I honestly don't even use the running shoes so I didn't really mind that it was obtained later. However, I did notice that fact and thought it was odd - maybe the creators wanted people to experience the faster movement of the character (is it me, or does the character seem to move faster in Black and White when walking?)

King Gumball May 6th, 2011 10:08 PM

what are the running shoes?

I think it is rather pointless and unrealistic to not have the running shoes right away, what is the point of the short and inconvenient wait?

I used to only ever use the bike instead of running shoes (except in buildings) but now my DS's direction buttons are old and insensitive I am using the bike less and less in areas that require a lot of navigation and resorting to running and even walking a round winding corners.

fenyx4 May 7th, 2011 5:28 AM

I don't really mind when I get them, so long as I get them.

And I'm very disappointed that you have to hold down B again to activate them, as opposed to HGSS's method of auto-run. That system of HGSS just screamed "convenience". I'm hoping that Gray Version and/or RS3DS bring back the auto-run capability. Typically, I use the Bicycle anyway, but I'd much rather have an "increase" in the walking speed if I could receive said boost without having to mangle my fingers to execute the dreaded and inconvenient "D-Pad + B button" combination. :<

Bloo May 7th, 2011 9:42 AM

I always pay attention to this every time a new Pokémon game is released. I'm really impatient with walking in the games, but I didn't really find it that annoying in BW, it wasn't that bad, but it would be nice to get it earlier.

I agree with Hiiro as far as having to press the 'B' button, as it's a step down from HGSS, in which you could opt-in to having the running shoes always on.

Eeohnex May 7th, 2011 1:29 PM

Honestly, I didn't mind having to wait to get my running shoes until around before the second town. I though the timing was good, since, it's a new Generation of Pokémon, I like to take my time and take a look around without the running shoes; it gives it a more of a feeling of a new adventure.

I agree with everyone on the feature in HG/SS that allowed to have running shoes implemented automatically, without having to press the button 'B'. It was sure nice. It would be nice to see it back in the next game along with your Pokémon walking behind you feature.
