Rotational Battles vs Triple Battles

It's about time we should have a discussion on this. n_n Depending on the game you've chosen, you'll experience more triple or rotational battles within specific trainers. In case you're unsure of how many battles there are in the two:

Black: Location | Option
Opelucid City // Rotation Battle
Driftveil City // Rotation Battle
Marvelous Bridge // Triple Battle
Black City // Rotation Battle
Black City // Rotation Battle

White: Location | Option
Opelucid City // Triple Battle
Driftveil City // Triple Battle
Marvelous Bridge // Rotation Battle
White Forest // Triple Battle
White Forest // Triple Battle

So my questions for you...
→ Which do you prefer out of the two?
→ Do you think there should have been more included in various locations?
→ What's your opinion as a whole on the two battling features?

Discuss. :]

koji8123 May 2nd, 2011 5:46 PM

I prefer Triple battles. Its easier to wipe them all out at once. :D

Vrai May 2nd, 2011 6:06 PM

I actually liked the triple battles way more. Rotational battles were annoying as heck and the mechanics behind it, while unique/cool/whatever were just meh. I disliked them. :(

Gulpin May 2nd, 2011 6:30 PM

→ Which do you prefer out of the two?
I havn't gotten much experience with either, but I just liked the 'newness' of the Rotation Battles over the Triple Battles. Triple Battles were basically doubles for me, but with the restriction of who you can attack, but Rotation Battles add a new aspect of battling along with new strategies and more use of prediction, which I think is great for older players who also want to be competitive battlers.
→ Do you think there should have been more included in various locations?
I think the amount was fine, but I guess there could have been more. I think there should be a place where you can go just to do those types of battles after the main storyline is over with.
→ What's your opinion as a whole on the two battling features?
I like the addition to Generation 3's double battles, but I like the brand new aspect of rotation that was also added even more because of what skills you have to use to succeed.

Ho-Oh May 2nd, 2011 6:55 PM

I hate rotational battles so much. :( They're so confusing - trying to work out where your opponent will rotate to next, whereas triple battles take a little bit longer than normal doubles, but hey, who doesn't enjoy killing three birds with three stones? :D total fail on my part I know, especially since I wouldn't even kill three birds let alone with stones.

I think there should've been waaay more triple battles. :( Rotational ones can go die. lol at the concept of the heartbreaker inventing these forms of battles, though.

Rai May 2nd, 2011 8:13 PM

I actually LOVE rotation battles. I think they are clever and are a good challenge.

I wish there were more of them!

rstevenson1976 May 2nd, 2011 9:16 PM

I have a feeling that the ai knows what move I'm going to use next and rotates it's pokemon that is immune to it before it hits

solarowl May 2nd, 2011 9:38 PM

I prefer Triple Battles, there's just something I hate about Rotation Battles. I feel GF was just trying to stuff another type of battle, so they just altered Triples. :/
I feel, since it was showcased a lot (or at least I saw them a lot), it should have been a bit more in the games, or at least earlier.
They were a great addition, and I like how in triples, you have specific Pokemon you can attack then just any Pokemon.

Oryx May 2nd, 2011 9:42 PM

I hate Rotation Battles. Predicting an AI is surprisingly harder than a real person a lot of the time, because sometimes they do things for absolutely no reason. Then I'm left trying to predict and it sucks. Also, it takes forever because it's constant "switch into something the enemy is weak against" over and over, so a ton of not very effective moves.

Palkia May 2nd, 2011 9:44 PM

Triple battles are easily better than rotational battles. Triple battles are easy to adapt to and Rotational battles are confusing and aren't that fun really.

Tropical Sunlight May 2nd, 2011 9:57 PM

Heheh, so far we all agree Triple Battles are better. Rotational Battles are all about predicting your foe's move, and I fail at that XD

Sir Skids Nickelton May 2nd, 2011 10:37 PM

I Like Rotations. Dunno Why, Just Seem More Exciting To Me. Triple = Variation Of Double. Rotation = A Whole New System. But That's Just My Opinion, And I See That Most Of You Don't Agree.

PlatinumDude May 3rd, 2011 1:40 AM

I haven't done a triple battle yet, but I think rotational battles are more fun because you never know when your opponent will switch Pokemon to be up front.

NamelessGuy May 3rd, 2011 3:30 AM

I find Rotation Battles much more enjoyable than Triple Battles. They require more strategy, but they're also more irritating.

ElectricScyther May 3rd, 2011 5:18 AM

Rotation Battles all the way! They have plenty of strategic decisions and wildness.

Nateon May 3rd, 2011 5:37 AM

I prefer rotation battles to triple, it's more of a guessing theme to it as you don't know when they're gonna chance, triple battles are also fun but they're restricted

Gothitelle. May 3rd, 2011 9:17 AM

Rotation Battles awesome but Triple/Double Battles are more tactical and require teamwork which is something I like. So Triple Battles it is.

Oh and thats when I found that certain duos/trios work together quite well.

Banjora Marxvile May 3rd, 2011 9:45 AM

I kinda prefer Rotational Battles, on the fact that it adds more of a thoughtful element to the game, making you think hard about strategies if against a friend, kinda like a more primitive chess.

Molts May 3rd, 2011 9:53 AM

I personally love the console side games the most because everything is double battles, more than one pokemon out at once creates some amazing synergies.

With that said, I would feel more inclined to triple battles, but I don't feel it is unique enough from double battles. The rotational battles are amazing, in that respect. Instant switching and still able to attack? Awesome. You have to assume your target will switch or not switch, then calculate if you have an attack on any of them that will be super effective depending on who he switches to and if he switches at all. I haven't put that much thought into a battle in ages. Where you have 6 pokemon to keep track of, and to figure out what their moves are and who and when they switch. That's awesome.

And obviously yes, I wish there were more of them, but I understand why they were so few. Least I can always do it at the battle subway. :D

SuperSaiyanII May 3rd, 2011 9:56 AM

Either one you do you have to put a lot of strategy into it(on wi-fi) which is why I like the addition of them. I find rotation battles to be a bit too confusing for me sometimes so I usually just stick to regular triple battles because I have a lot of teams that work well together in them.

Bluerang1 May 3rd, 2011 11:40 AM

iLove Rotational Battles! I didn't get their concept when they were announced but I really like them after playing them. They're so modern and a great addition to the game. It's fun trying to figure out what your opponent will do next and moving accordingly.

Tripple Battles on the other hand are boring and take too long -_-' And the whole "can't hit Pokemon at the other side" thing be annoying.

Yes, I would like there to be more of these around, especially more of the other version's specialty Battle Type. The Trainers at Opelucid are fine to re-battle but there levels are to low for when we'll want to use them to train and battle the same Pokemon daily isn't fun.

esperance May 3rd, 2011 11:42 AM

Well, I think that triple battles are great, but I was disappointed by how few there actually are. On the other hand, I find rotation battles annoying and bothersome. I wish they weren't included in the games.

Neiko Star May 3rd, 2011 12:50 PM

I love Rotation Battles. They're so incredibly easy. Triple Battles, on the other hand, are rather meh. They're basically double battles but with three Pokemon.

Timbjerr May 3rd, 2011 1:56 PM

Rotational battles have this great element of strategy and out-predicting your opponent that I just have to vote for it over triple battles, which are essentially just doubles battles except less fun and more frustrating with most attacks having limited range and all.

Solfatara May 3rd, 2011 1:57 PM

I much preferred the rotation battles, which in my opinion offer a lot of more strategic thinking. Having all the cards laid out on the table, you need to determine which cards to play and how to allow the last half of the game to go to your favour. The whole beauty lies in exactly that: prediction, mind games.
Triple battles were just... a slower, and slightly restricted double battle in my opinion.

Steven May 3rd, 2011 2:00 PM

I like triple battles and rotation battles equally.

Well, maybe triple battles a little bit more just because I don't need to do as much clicking. xD

Zelda May 4th, 2011 3:25 AM

For my own opinion on the two, I'd say I like triple battles more. However, rotational battles are not that bad if you're looking for a little challenge. Although it takes time to actually finish the battle with this style, it gives you something to think about throughout the battle; "If I switch to ___ and use ___, will he switch to ___?" As for triple battles, I think it's just the easier way out from rotational battles. It's a simpler system to learn as well, and pretty enjoyable. It's too bad Black has more rotational than triple battles though. :(

I personally think they should have included more triple/rotational battles in the games, though I guess it's not really a main feature as it looked to be either.

Lockmaster24 May 4th, 2011 4:02 AM

I too love Rotation battle. They are challenging and interesting. Triple battles just seem boring you take out two and then your left with a 3-0n-1 slaughter fest that is impossible to lose from. (really it is) Where on rotation battle can change in an instant, you predict their swap and it can be devistating for them.

Kevin May 4th, 2011 4:08 AM

Personally I like triple battles better since all three Pokemon are on the battlefield.

Pokemon Trainer Touko May 4th, 2011 4:32 AM

I LOVE rotational battles, they're a lot better than triple battles imo. I think triple battles are so similar to double battles.

big NATE alpha May 4th, 2011 6:06 AM

Rotation battles have that edge of strategy that you don't get from other Pokemon battles as much: Will he or won't he rotate? Am I overpredicting? Should I just stay with the one I have, knowing he'll rotate to counter my alleged counter? It's all a big guessing game, trying to stay two steps ahead of your opponent and make sure your teammates compliment each other. Triple battles are fun, but the switching mechanic is very frustrating to say the least. I also wish there were more in the game, or at least rebattleable ones with higher levels. Triple/Rotation battles in the sports domes would be fun!

Arma May 4th, 2011 6:43 AM

Rotational Battles, too bad there are so few of them in White.

Why?

^This, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Westie7 May 4th, 2011 8:34 AM

I got White, and my two main disappointments were that I only got one Rotation battle, which I found as a new and interesting take on battling, and that I can't use Black City to train.

Triple Battles were just annoying because I can't use my super-effective attacks when I need them.

Mr155555 May 4th, 2011 12:29 PM

I Think I Will Go With The Triple Battles Because Rotatation Battle Are So Confusing

hiff8 May 4th, 2011 1:38 PM

I just broke the tie Rotation RULES i just love the thought of having 12 moves available to you at all times.

You should definitely consider getting Black some point on as well, especially with the amount of version differences there are. :o

But to be honest, I agree. I think there should have been an equal amount of triple and rotational battles in both games, or at least a couple more. Having one of the opposite depending on the game you chose just doesn't cut the experience enough. :( Also considering I have Black and I prefer triple battles, only being allowed to experience it through one trainer is a disappointment. u_u

I hate rotational battles! They make me have to make predictions which I suck at doing. At least with triple battles I know who I'll be hitting (most of the time). In rotational battles I keep getting confused about what should I do and I keep trying to predict what my opponent is thinking and if there predicting that I am predicting what I am predicting what they are predicting what I am predicting what they are predicting what I am predicting what I am predicting and I get more of a headache then a Psyduck. This is why I like triple battles more then double battles.

Count May 5th, 2011 3:48 AM

→ Which do you prefer out of the two?
Triple Battles.
→ Do you think there should have been more included in various locations?
Actually yes, they both feel very exclusive... don't really see the point right now.
→ What's your opinion as a whole on the two battling features?
Triple Battles were inevitable really, and I can't say I don't like them. I dislike rotation battles, they're just so unpredictable that a strategy is mostly useless. Especially against CPU's because they do the most random things in these battles.

An example: I'm in a rotation battle with a Zebstrika in the front on the opponent's side. On my side, my Aerodactyl is at the front. I rotate to the left so my Leavanny is at the front, and you'd think Zebstrika would go for an electric move. But instead it uses Flame Charge, so it nearly kills my Leavanny. That just doesn't make any sense. Unless the CPU was trying to predict my movement.

I don't know. I just don't like them.

NatureKeeper May 5th, 2011 9:19 AM

Rotation is far more creative than Triple. It helps you think.

This triple battle reminds me of a game called Fossil Fighters. Those who have played it know why.

King Gumball May 5th, 2011 1:50 PM

I hate rotation battles.... they are really confusing to work out and I just hate the rotation. Like kt is just plain annoying when your opponent rotates all the time. I think triple battles are better because it is way simpler and double battles were awesome, so triple battles are three times the fun. I predicted there would be triple battles too originally in Gen 4 so it is good they have finally been made!
