B/W spoiled me with speedy battles

Anyone else having trouble playing previous games after playing through B/W due to slow battles? I mean, I can get a battle over with in 3 min in B/W while it takes me easily 10 minutes in Diamond. Its just that the animations are so slow!

Roserade uses Grass Knot!
Animation for 2 seconds!
Wait a second....
It is super effective!
Rhyperior slowly looses health.
Still going.
Wait, just about there.
Almost!
OPPONENT USES HYPERPOTION!

Okay, I absolutely loved my diamond game, and I was planning on keeping my team around for a while to keep playing through end game content and potentially even competitive play, but the game is just so slow!

Black and White battles are so quick, and I feel like I can't even play previous games anymore without raging. Anyone else feel the same?

Palkia June 14th, 2011 9:18 AM

The speed of the battles in B/W was noticeably quicker than in the 4th gen games, which I do think is a very good addition. It's hard to return to those games because of this. (I don't have this issue with Emerald though, probably because of nolstalga the speed of the battle system)

feralig8rx June 14th, 2011 9:22 AM

You know, I actually haven't played through Emerald in over 5 years. I was thinking of resetting it just so I can have something to play through but I was afraid I would get angry at the battle system and then end up with a new game that I won't continue. I might have to just push through it though, since Emerald was just amazing.

LightOfTruth June 14th, 2011 9:28 AM

This is good for grinding pokemon up levels :)

Iditarod June 14th, 2011 9:30 AM

I was having that same problem with playing HeartGold! I made myself push through it and after a few days I was like "This isn't so bad..." Then I went back to Black Version and was amazed at its speed all over again. :D So it's a good and a bad thing. (A/N: I'm agreeing with you both; Emerald is amazing, and worth playing, even if the game engine isn't as fast as Black's and White's.)

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire June 14th, 2011 9:54 AM

The same happened to me...it's so slow especially gen IV wi-fi battles when compared to gen V...

JP June 14th, 2011 10:06 AM

I felt like this originally as well. Over time with the release of BW and going back to DPPt a couple of times, it just hasn't bothered me as much as it used to though. No idea why, perhaps I simply got use to it again, or "nostalgia" kicked in (less likely lol)

I definitely find it true that all the changes that BW brought to the table have made the older games a bit more of a pain to play. It's really what happens with technology as it grows though, for example... iPods. If you were to go back to an '04 Classic iPod after getting use to the new generation ones. You can still use it, sure, but it's simply not as satisfying as using the newer ones. Not all may feel this way, but I definitely do.

LegendaryFSK June 14th, 2011 11:59 AM

I hear ya. I just restarted Diamond a couple of days ago...and it's driving me insane with how slow the battles are compared to Black. It's gonna be irritating, but I'll push through it. Glad 5th Gen sped things up though.

tobinus June 14th, 2011 12:18 PM

I'm also a victim for this.. although the same happened to me after I had played through Pearl. I tried Emerald once.. and then, Emerald had spoilt me with speedy battles :P

That was also the main reason I've never played Pearl since then. I was more surprised to find that SoulSilver also seems slow and old.

Flashmeteor June 14th, 2011 12:25 PM

I like slow annoying battles.. So I actually liked going back to my Soulsilver.

Ƈlydę June 14th, 2011 12:45 PM

I like doing things quick, and I couldn't handle the fact that my pokes don't move in my older games..
so until blah blah I don't think I'll ever play the older games =[

PlatinumDude June 14th, 2011 3:44 PM

I noticed the gaming speed differences between D/P and B/W. I actually like the improved gaming speed because D/P took forever to go through actions.

Femme Fatale June 14th, 2011 3:49 PM

I totally agree! I found "Platinum" and tried starting a enw game and I just couldn't. It was SO slow and the graphics weren't up to par as they are as B &W

Clefairies June 14th, 2011 4:19 PM

I went back to my 4th gen game today and I can't say I noticed o.O
But I do tend to not take much notice of things like this /facepalm.

Atomic Pirate June 14th, 2011 4:40 PM

I restarted Platinum not long ago, and for a while I was bothered at the way the attack animations and overall battle pace crawled along, but after I beat Gardenia, I got used to the slower pace. Now, I can play White and go back to Platinum without being too bothered by the pace.

Impo June 15th, 2011 3:54 AM

I am really thankful for the speed increase. I felt it was annoying spending more time waiting for animations to finish than actually battling.

Off Topic: Could you link me to where you got those animated BW sprites in your description in a PM or VM?

On Topic: The difference in battle speed between BW and DP is enormous. However, PtHGSS had a faster Battle System than DP, so there it's not so bad. As for DP though, it helps if you turn off the battle scene.

Starchomp June 15th, 2011 5:18 AM

Just Turn the animations off in the settings if you feel it's a problem...

Gymnotide June 15th, 2011 5:58 AM

They screwed up Solarbeam in everything Gen IV and V. It looks super weak and not awesome at all. It needs to be slow and epic. Needs more impact.

Brittani June 15th, 2011 7:04 AM

I actually hated Emerald, and could agree that it was one of the worst games I've ever played. Anyways, I could agree that B/W does have more of a speedy type battle system but like Starchomp said, if it bothers you that much then change the settings.

Agreed.

PokéSwimmer June 15th, 2011 9:23 AM

The speed increase was great, but it really doesn't bother me to go back to previous gens. Diamond and Pearl, however, are an exception. Their battles were ridiculously slow even within their own generation.

Vrai June 15th, 2011 8:33 PM

I absolutely loved the speed-up in the battles. It made everything just... so much faster and easier, which generally meant I spent more time playing the game and had more fun. Now, going back to the older games, it never really bothered me when I went back to play like Emerald. I mean I noticed the difference in speed a little bit but nothing so big that it threw me off my game entirely. :(((

Enigma June 15th, 2011 10:31 PM

lmao @ the OP
I can't stand playing D/P/Pt because of how slow they went. I absolutely love the faster battles. Whenever I go back to play my Pearl, I usually give up within a few minutes just because it takes me like five minutes to do a wild Pokemon battle. ._. So faster battles were a Pokeblessing.

Guard June 15th, 2011 10:48 PM

Slow battles are not my thing. I definitely turn off 'battle animations' as soon as I start any game.

LethalTexture June 16th, 2011 12:01 AM

The game engine used in Platinum/HG/SS was a streamlined, sped-up version of the D/P/P engine, so going back to play those aren't a real problem, but going back to play Diamond or Pearl, even compared to the third gen, are so slow that they just become unplayable.
