United States of Pokemon
The UNited States OV America Discuss:So obviously everyone knows by now that the region of Unova is based off of New York City. There are obvious correlations, such as Castelia = Manhattan, but what about the other areas in the region that are less obscure, do they belong in and make sense or not? A desert in NYC?! On another note, how do you feel about the idea of Pokemon branching out of Japan in general? Is it a good way to keep the game going, or does it ruin the charm? Will the future hold Gamefreak exploring America like they used several regions of Japan in a row, or even more branching out? -What areas correlate to real areas (forest, desert, mountains, beaches) -The idea of America as a Pokemon region |
I don't really mind that the Pokémon world is branching out to the rest of the world. It shows that the Pokémon world is actually a "world" and not a region on it's own. While playing I don't really think "ooh, I'm walking around in this or that city", but I keep focused and the region as it's own entity, regardless of where it's counterpart in the real world is.
To me, the Pokémon world, no matter how similar to ours, will always be a world on its own. I don't have any feeling with America, or New York specifically, so it doesn't feel as "familiar" as it does for people who've actually been there. Now if Pokémon would relocate to a certain part of Europe, that might be something else. ;3 The fact that different parts of nature (like the desert, forests, mountains) appear where their counterpart in the real world shows an entirely different view, is only natural for a Pokémon game. Different types require different environments. As for the future, I wouldn't mind if the Pokémon world would eventually cover our world. It would, for me, be quite amusing and quite an achievement for GF. |
I sincerely question why they decided to put the Pokemon League in the Bronx.

I must say it annoys me all the first regions were based in Japan. I would have preffered them to be in a completly imaginary part of the world. It bother me because many characters don't look Japanese at all. For instance, Misty is a red-head with green eyes. No way she's Japanese :P. Same goes for Jessie. I can understand the producers to be patriotic, but I believe it would have made more sense if the Pokemon world was completely apart from ours.

The desert was mostly because of *be silenced*
Because of *keep a suspence silence* 9/11 And the woods.etc. was to make the normal setup |
Well I think it seems based the entire state of New York as well, but they made it into the size of New York City. Where the desert comes from I have know Idea. I like the idea of branching out from Japan. I personally want to see them make one based on Europe, with towns based on England, Holland, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Romania (vampire pokemon?) and Russia. The Pokemon league could be in Sweden!

As I said it was probably because of 9/11 bu tyeah,I'd like to see one based on Brasil.Tropical area swould be nice

And I believe that Pinwheel is Forest Park in Queens, but I can't really prove that one way or the other. If you look to the right of Manhatten on a map and slightly south like Pinwheel, the two parks in that area are Flushing Meadows and Forest. It makes slightly more sense imo for Forest Park to be conveyed as a forest, so. That's my analysis of it. Of course, I don't think everything is perfectly set where it belongs so I could be entirely off and the forest could be like the desert, just there to be there. |
I like that it's based on somewhere other than Japan, really. Because for one, it makes it kinda more realistic to a western um, what's the word, audience? Yeah something like that. The fact that we can kinda relate to the region better because it mostly associates with things we know in general (aka vending machines lol and other things I can't remember) we can kinda enjoy the games better for that reason. As for future games, probably other countries imo they'll be based on :x

The first four gens all being located in "Japan" and all shared each others Pokemon. Kanto Pokemon were in Sinnoh, Hoenn Pokemon could be found in Johto, and so on.
Unova is located in "The United States of America". As such, one wouldn't expect to see too many Japanese Pokemon as I'm sure that most of us don't see too many Japanese people in comparison to European Caucasians. So it kind of makes sense how that there were only Unova Pokemon in the first part of the game yet how everybody knows about other Pokemon like Pikachu. I can see Game Freak continuing this "Pokemon in America" concept. And having Swoobats, Roggenrolas, and Frillish in the next region since if they would be in the same country. |
What about Emolgas? Gotta have their Pika lookalike, even if it doesn't evolve or anything.
I wanna speculate that Nimbasa is based off of Coney Island, because if I recall correctly, Coney Island was (and might still be) an amusement park sort of place? If Pokemon does continue (which I suppose it probably will), I would love to see it reach out to other places, especially ones with a terrible economy. You never know, basing regions off said locations might inspire people to travel to those places, and maybe they'll end up helping the economy and all this other world peace stuff ^______^ /a girl can dream, can't she? ;; |

That would make for a fascinating game tbh, one where you were literally exploring a new region, helping forge a path and helping people set up towns and settle down and such so you basically create the region from the ground up during the game. :3 |
I was reminded of places ranging from England to San Francisco...It's extremely varied.
