DowntownDumpling August 19th, 2011 3:48 AM

Is it just me, or did everyone used to name their character "ASH"?

I don't see it happening as often anymore, but particularly in the older games, Yellow most of all, it seems like at least one out of every three kids I talked to named their character "ASH". Has anyone ever noticed this?

TheFred August 19th, 2011 5:28 AM

Not for me, I've always named me Fred or the color of the cartrige.

Oryx August 19th, 2011 10:54 AM

I named Touko Ash

This is pretty much common sense. I mean, main character of the show, was actually the inspiration for Yellow, etc, etc. I would be surprised if people didn't name themselves Ash.

MotherPunker970 August 20th, 2011 10:54 AM

LOL i did actually name him ash in rbgyfrlg games, untill i found about manga...i never played gbc so i never knew about RED,i only played the remakes, but untill then i already knew all about red and read the manga completely...

Maple Leaf August 20th, 2011 12:03 PM

Yes, I named my character "Ash" in Pokemon Red, but not anymore! :D

champagnepapi August 20th, 2011 12:33 PM

I named my character in Crystal, Ash, because a kid that I met at a department store had done so and I followed suit.

cbd98 August 20th, 2011 5:09 PM

I only named him ASH in Yellow. Every other time it's either Will or cbd98.

k-9 unit August 20th, 2011 5:35 PM

on platnium i also tried to make a trainer that is JUST like him

Andyb4325 August 20th, 2011 8:01 PM

When the games first came out i would name him ash but when ruby and sapphire came out both genders had names already. Then they continued to give them names. Then went through phases of what i named my people.

CoolTrainer August 26th, 2011 6:17 PM

I've always just used my name. Its not really like Zelda where I felt like I should name him Link.

psyanic August 26th, 2011 6:30 PM

I named myself Ash in Yellow... but that was just for my first play-through in the game, when I was all hyped up for gaming and the anime.

cazzler August 26th, 2011 8:46 PM

When I played Yellow I named him Ash, as for Red/FireRed I named the character Red, In Gold version however I named him Gold.

Xperious August 26th, 2011 10:34 PM

Only in Yellow for me. Every other version I used my name (Travis).

desbrina August 27th, 2011 7:08 AM

I used to name myself Misty in yellow, but that was a long time ago. Its Des now

Mentalii August 27th, 2011 9:08 AM

In my Yellow version I indeed gave the heroe name to my character, when I was younger totally crazy about the anime. But I've restarted it and called the protagonist "Théo" (don't really know why, I hadn't any ideas of how to call him so I chose the first name that crossed my mind), then I've restarted it again and called him "Red". And I think that I gonna restart my game again soon, I wonder what will be the name I'll give him...

johnny18 August 27th, 2011 9:24 AM

I name character Ash due to the fact that back to the old time, I do not understand English ^^

mondays suck August 27th, 2011 9:55 AM

I only did that maybe once or twice - never really liked the name a lothttp://www.civforum.de/images/smilies/ziel.gif.

*Latias August 27th, 2011 12:24 PM

No one among people I know did. It was common to name the character Red.

The funny thing was when females named the character (who was a boy) with female names. xD

MMundy777 August 27th, 2011 5:16 PM

I never used ASH...and it personally always bothered me (glad it's fixed now) that everyone's names WAS IN CAPS. I always used my real name with proper casing lol

Seki August 27th, 2011 6:14 PM

When I first started playing Red, I called him AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. After I accidentally deleted the save, I named him to my name (whichyouhavetofindoutyourself).

7Mufasa7 August 27th, 2011 7:43 PM

ehhhh i remember calling myself ash like 3 times out of the hundreds of pokemon re runs i played.
my cousin still names his character Ash lol.

he played from 3rd gen-b/w

bobandbill August 28th, 2011 4:03 AM

I never called myself Ash in any of the game; but with Pokemon received from trades from RBY I sure got a lot of Pokemon with OT names of Ash. XD Not surprising I suppose given the popularity of the anime then, and the fact many of said trades were from Yellow.

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ August 28th, 2011 4:51 AM

My brother did one time. I never did, even back then I knew I didn't want myself associated with that n00b, and it didn't take long for my brother to realize that, too.

Closest I've come is naming my female character in White, "Ashley."

Meganium August 28th, 2011 10:45 PM

I'm a lady, so I never named my character Ash. xD I don't find myself naming myself Ash in the future when I get around to playing the games again. lol It would be Ani since I used that name so much back then.

gvgisdi August 28th, 2011 11:30 PM

You could name your character Ashley. :P

Shining Raichu August 29th, 2011 4:17 AM

I always named my character either Ash or Andrew (which is my name). There was always something gratifying about being able to pretend that you were Ash XD

Raizhu August 29th, 2011 4:19 AM

I've never done it. I see it quite a lot when I look at Battle on the GTS, though.

Avishka August 29th, 2011 5:25 AM

I only did that maybe once or twice. i don't like the name much

Binary August 29th, 2011 7:50 AM

Yes, quite a few times. As a kid, naming my character Ash made me feel like I was Ash. It made my young heart content, so I had to. :x

Guest123_x1 August 29th, 2011 2:28 PM

When I first got Yellow (which was my first Pokémon game), I named the character Ash (seeing as Yellow was designed to follow the show's storyline). However, when I later got Blue, I named the character after myself (seeing as you could choose between the standard starters: Bulbasaur; Charmander; and Squirtle, on most of the save-files I've ever done on it, I almost always chose Bulbasaur.)

DowntownDumpling September 13th, 2011 2:27 PM

I've never named my character Ash.

Demon. September 13th, 2011 2:56 PM

Like, once. And after that i started naming my character Red in all of the games. Except emerald.

mikey September 13th, 2011 3:28 PM

I named my character Ash in my Red Version, but other than that no.

Rocket Grunt Cali September 13th, 2011 3:52 PM

I've always called my character Cali, even when I was stuck playing as a guy, haha. I've always liked feeling like the game was talking to me :P

U.Flame September 20th, 2011 11:22 AM

Even though Ash is based on Red, it still bugs me that everyone names Red Ash. Red isn't Ash, Red is Red. Weirdest name I ever chose was Heyexow. (For the best Missingno. results, as it is based on name.)

Sydian September 20th, 2011 3:54 PM

I don't think I've ever used the name Ash. The closest I've gotten to that is naming myself Satoshi in Blue, but that's only cause I was going for a theme of naming my Pokemon their Japanese names, so I did the same thing for the player and the rival. I hate seeing people with the name Ash though. Makes me think "wow you couldn't come up with something better?" or "yah dats original lolz."

sherreamethyst September 20th, 2011 4:58 PM

LOL, i love trading with people in yellow/red/blue/gold/silver/crystal that give me a pikachu and their name is ASH. i find it soo cool, LOL. But no, i didnt name myself ASH in my yellow. I named myself Ren instead, since when I was starting it, I was watching Footloose(the 1984 film) in class.

Ren was so hot in that movie... X)

Juzey September 21st, 2011 12:06 AM

I normally call my character Juzey, or my real name, and because I'm a girl, that would just have been weird in Gen 1, so I called the character Ash.

donavannj September 21st, 2011 2:15 AM

At one point or another, all my first generation games were named Ash. It was popular then, and I wanted to name my character the "proper" name for the character. I did that for second gen, too, naming my main character "Max", since that's what the game guide I was using called him.

M4 September 22nd, 2011 7:08 PM

Never did Ash since i played the games before the guy even came out. soo

Briar September 22nd, 2011 11:59 PM

i've never named any of my characters ash ever. i wasn't a fan of the series, and the only character i knew from the anime was "pikachu."
if i remember correctly, i just chose the name of my character from the prepared list of names.

~VladKun~ September 23rd, 2011 12:23 AM

My older brother and a few of my friends used Ash.

While the other majority of my friends and me used Red for our characters.

jvpski3 September 23rd, 2011 4:44 AM

OMG that name sucks I think! He would probably have problems in school.

Yoshikko September 23rd, 2011 8:25 AM

I never named them Ash because I knew that they weren't Ash lol. When I was very little I just named them aaaaa.

Squirrel September 24th, 2011 2:12 PM

Never named one Ash, since I'll always know it's not him D: Plus I'm not very creative so they've always either been called Alex (my name) or Ozzy (my nick-name from friends) :p

LillithSilver September 24th, 2011 4:44 PM

I usually name my character random things, only I did use a pre-selected name on Pokémon Red.

Brendino September 24th, 2011 10:54 PM

I never named my own character Ash, but I know my cousin did for all of his first gen games (he started using his own name in Gold).

linksonick September 25th, 2011 8:47 AM

I know that in Red Version my 5 year old self named the character Ash, but that was the only game where I used that name.

MichaelXD September 25th, 2011 1:59 PM

I use Red for my Red Version, Blue for my Blue Version, and Ash for my Yellow Version because in one of the first gen games, at least someone in it needs to have the name Ash and is far more smarter than the actual Ash on the anime. I can't wait to get all this expensive anime and I'm going to start playing all my games in chronological order from Pokemon Red and Blue to where I am right now. Red is the name I call Ash in Red Version because at the end of Gold and Silver, you face off in a battle against Red who looks like Ash but just calls himself Red even if you can't get Espeon in Red but that's another story. Maybe it's something about owning all 151 of the Pokemon which is what I'm going to be persistent enough to do. There is this glitch on how to get Togepi which could've to my guess been accidentally programmed into the game because it was written in the anime that there was a Togepi but to perform it you need Chansey at top.

I use Gold for my Gold Version, Silver for my Silver Version, and Chris, or Kris for my Crystal Version and Terra or May for my Ruby Version and or Seth or Brendan and Sean or Brendan for my Sapphire Version and on Emerald, I use their real names. Seth can feel familiar because on Pokemon Colosseum, there's an option to name your character Wes, Seth, or Thomas or you can give them a customed name. When you're on Quick Battle for Pokemon XD or Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness, the name changes randomly along with the Pokemon and ID number and the trainer is always on different names. I use Michael for Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness and that's about it. I may start using Ash in Firered and Leafgreen and I never had the game before. Without it, I can't get Gengar because the post game of Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness looks a lot like Firered and Leafgreen taken to the Orre region.

hinkage September 25th, 2011 2:19 PM

I noticed, but never really understood why kids didn't want to be themselves.

In Yellow, it's more understandable, since the game was based off the anime.

MichaelXD September 25th, 2011 2:24 PM

Your Pikachu could have a chance of being female if his attack stat isn't 12 when you obtain it at level 5 and Ash's Pikachu is found out to be a male. There's more to it then just naming your character Ash from the anime and having the same Pokemon.

~*!*~Tatsujin Gosuto~*!*~ September 27th, 2011 5:53 PM

I've always used my real or nickname as the player. As for people calling themselves Ash, I never saw any of my friends or people that just played that I know use "Ash" as their username.

:t354:TG

giradialkia September 28th, 2011 1:34 AM

Nope, I never called him Ash. I just knew they weren't the same person, so I didn't think Ash'd work. I once went with Satoshi (and Shivering for the Rival) but I'm not sure how I made sense of that, lol.

RivalGator October 2nd, 2011 2:20 PM

I think I named him Ash in Yellow, because it totally fit with Pikachu, Jessie, and James. I never did it again though.

AquaticWartortle October 2nd, 2011 2:39 PM

When I first got into the Pokemon craze in Sapphire I named my character Ash along with Diamond & my second game Blue Version! :D In Yellow version I named my character Yellow.

chella182 October 4th, 2011 3:13 PM

I think I was called Satoshi in Yellow... which is kind of Ash :p

I was Squitle in Blue (yes, I misspelled it )

Jarred0809 October 4th, 2011 5:37 PM

I named my character in Red "Jerry." It's a long-retired nickname.

KoolKat vs. Lucas October 8th, 2011 10:52 AM

I never use Ash/ASH. I use KoolKat or something funny (ex. PkMn???)

Zelda October 8th, 2011 3:21 PM

I've never really created any other name besides my real name for the Pokémon protagonists, so that would have to be a no for me. It's pretty weird to have the poor guy set with a girl name though...

assassinjay1229 October 8th, 2011 10:30 PM

I noticed a lot of people did (still do), but i'm always Jay unless I choose to be female like on my Platinum.

Raven-NAR-32450 October 8th, 2011 11:20 PM

i used to name all of my characters "ash" then crystal came out and i actually started using imagination with my names, but i honestly can't remember them all.

DexHolderBlue October 14th, 2011 3:52 PM

I've actually never seen anyone do that. It never even occured to me to name the player character after one of the anime characters, surprisingly. I usually name them after real people I like/hate(rivals). xD

Deliciousfruit233 October 14th, 2011 11:03 PM

I usually use my own name for my player character. I've never used the name "Ash".

blue October 15th, 2011 6:25 AM

I used to call my character Joe but then when I was older I started to call the FRLG character Ash.

Dale October 15th, 2011 10:09 AM

I just name all of my characters 'Dale', but my friend used to name his 'Ash', so now I have a lvl 83 Alakazam with an OT: ASH.

Joshist October 16th, 2011 7:42 AM

I used to do that in RBY, but then i started naming them the generic names, like Brendan, May, Lucas.

LeafeonxxEeveexxEspeon October 16th, 2011 8:50 AM

Yeh, I named my character Ash only once, and only in Yellow. Otherwise I use Eevee or some other Pokémon that I like. My brothers always called the character Red, though.

Squeaker Ed October 16th, 2011 5:43 PM

Not that I can remember. I usually named my character after the main character of whatever anime/other game I really liked at the time I was playing it. (More than one occasion, my main character was named Sora. XD)

Poueff October 17th, 2011 12:23 PM

That's one of my biggest pet peeves with pokémon fans - the names they give. YOU are playing the game, that's the point. One of the biggest things in pokémon is that you can build whatever team you like and you raise them. Naming yourself "Ash" or "Red" is like naming your starter (whatever it is) "Pikachu". It's dumb.
Ever since I've started playing pokémon I named myself either my real name (first game - LG, 6 years old) or nicknames I had/have (either the one I had at school or Poueff - from my first Ruby onwards).

Sorry for the rant, but I just hate it when people do that, to either Ash or Red.

When I first played the games I was about 5 or 6 and completely nuts about the anime, so sure I named all my saves Ash lol. Plus in answer to your question, I wasn't the most popular kid lol, was born with a bad hearing disorder so I wasn't really all that sincere about my self back then. Kinda depressed now that I think about it -.-....

Anyway! Now that I'm going through all my old games I just use my own name(Andrew for anyone that cares), I actually lived in Japan when they released Red and Blue, my dad was stationed there for about 3-4 years. When left in 96-97, absolutely awesome place to live. Well dang I've gotten off topic now lol.

FlameChocobo October 26th, 2011 10:10 PM

When we were younger, my brothers name them Ash (My second oldest named it "Ash" on his Gold.)

I personally don't. I name myself after my real name when I was younger. Now I name my self after my first word of my moniker, AKA username.

The Author October 28th, 2011 3:21 PM

I hate it when people do that. :P
Naming is one of the most vital parts of the game process for me.
If I ever don't like the name, I will seriously just restart the game.
I used to always go by "XOR VOK" or just "Xor" but then I started going by "Kusoru" and in Diamond I called myself "Tsudane".
Naming is my favourite part.

I think in Ruby I named my character "Link"....

Sephirothxx October 31st, 2011 10:09 AM

Dude I used to always name my character ASH. Whenever I saw someone with acharacter named after themselves, or something like that, I thought it was weird. Now that I think about it, I think naming the character after the game's color (besides diamond, pearl, platinum. That would sound weird.) sounds way better. That doesnt apply with heartgold, though. I just name my dude Gold, because naming him HeartGold makes him sound gay...

Snivy063 November 3rd, 2011 10:20 PM

I actually didn't name my character Ash, named it before my pet dog at that time. :'D

IAshKetchum November 5th, 2011 12:05 PM

Still do name myself Ash it gives it more feel to the game and links with the anime :)

Tyewatson November 6th, 2011 6:29 AM

It wasn't until Ruby and Sapphire that I started coming up with new names. However I did name my characters either my name or that one game where I started it in almost pitch black on a road trip and got to the 4th gym, and when it was day time I realized I called my character AAAAAAAA and then I kept it that way until I put all my Pokémon on Pokémon Stadium and made a new game.

charcharx3 November 8th, 2011 6:23 PM

I guess that makes sense to name it ash- it's in the tv show we all know and love. However, as a girl, I obviously didn't. And I couldn't name my trainer Misty, as I chose fire starters. Therefore I named mine Teresa and Jessica.

PokemonSpecialLover November 17th, 2011 8:55 PM

I named my characters random names for certain mini goals. (Example: B=Crystal. Caught all Pokemon in Unova dex.) I wasn't aware of the Anime until perhaps the age of 9. :o
I never liked it then nor do I now.

Ephemeral Euphoria November 17th, 2011 8:58 PM

My character's name on my old Silver game was Ash way back then, started using Seth as my main name for most of the games when I started Ruby.

XDragonRiderX November 18th, 2011 3:16 PM

I've named my characters after my name.

Squirrel November 18th, 2011 3:22 PM

I always used to name them "Alex" because that's my name and I'm incredibly creative ;p Although now they're always named Ozzy since that's my nickname at school/from friends. :3

miltankRancher November 20th, 2011 11:48 PM

When we were kids, we used to watch Ash and his adorable Pikachu. That is why kids always want to name themselves with the greatest Trainer they could think of. of course we all know that it is Red.

Celestial Daze November 21st, 2011 7:55 AM

I either name(d) them the name fo the game, A or a nickname of my choice, like John or something

Tesbi November 24th, 2011 6:44 AM

Named them Ash in R/B/Y since I loved the anime. I remember getting Pokémon Gold for my birthday a few years later and one of the default names for the character was Karl (which is my name) so I felt like I needed to pick that. I've used Karl ever since.

Thrash November 28th, 2011 2:28 PM

Well, yeah, I named my character in R/B/Y Ash. But only because it's my actual name.

Conspiracy December 6th, 2011 3:24 PM

I only done it once. I got bored of the game so decided to only catch and raise every Pokemon Ash did in the Anime and try and beat the Elite Four.

Mr. Magius December 11th, 2011 4:51 AM

To be honest, I named my character (and every other nameable thing) "AAAAAAA"...
I was a slowww kid, didn't know how these contraptions worked. I did this up to the 2nd Generation. XD

SPEEDIE December 11th, 2011 4:55 AM

I never have, my name I use is and will always be Speedie
Although back in when me and my friends played Gen III a few of my friends called themselves Ash

Jarred0809 December 11th, 2011 8:57 AM

I named mine "Gary" the first time. I still can't figure out why.

Killjoy December 11th, 2011 7:34 PM

My name is and always has been 'Will', for that is my name

Raichupacabra December 18th, 2011 12:55 AM

Only a few times. I'd also name my Rival Gary.

SuperTrainStationH December 18th, 2011 7:12 AM

I named mine Ash, but without all caps.

1. It was from the show, which I saw first

2. I was the type who always used official default names, but just naming them red and blue felt dumb to me.

TamerKoh December 21st, 2011 8:12 AM

I've never named the main character Ash. I've always named them based on the game color, or if I've heard their real names. Due to that, Red and Gold were correct, but Emerald was wrong for Ruby. After the 3rd generation, I just researched their real names and used those as input instead.

Teh Blazer December 21st, 2011 9:09 AM

I'd give myself an original name, but get stumped for my rival. He always ends up being Gary. Sometimes I would name myself Red or Silver, but that was it on the unoriginal names.

Kitsune Genetica December 21st, 2011 10:52 AM

Never, ever did that. Especially since Gamefreak have been designing more diverse characters. I always use the name Soma, though I used to use the original names given by the franchise.

Roughsponge December 22nd, 2011 4:10 PM

Yeah I used to call myself Ash a lot in R/B/Y and G/S/C but then I started using "Mikey", since its my name.

But over the last few years I prefer to use the game's version name (E.g. Red, Emerald, Black) or their "official" name (E.g. Lucas and Brendan) I'm so creative as you can see :D

TwiDragon December 22nd, 2011 6:58 PM

I named myself Matt, Twi, and when I ran with the female trainer, I named her Rose. No ash there. I've never met anyone who named there guy ash. One person named there character Gary but thats about it.

Sector December 22nd, 2011 8:32 PM

Never used Ash. I used my own name, Jesse, all the way up until Ruby. Since 2007 however, I earned a nickname for xbox 360 online & became well known to the Halo Big Team community and even more popular in the Battlefield series after holding my spot in the top 100 on the leaderboard for several games. That name, is "Sector Revenge." Hint: My name on here too. So I use "Sector" for pretty much everything, even my person's name is Sector in Pokemon in all of them.

Jayster23 December 23rd, 2011 5:38 AM

I called myself Red a lot, i think i named myself Ash twice? :/

Markichuuuuu December 23rd, 2011 10:15 AM

The only game I'd name my character "ASH" was in Yellow Version for obvious reasons.
