Pokecommunity makes safari crash.

I've noticed it on my other computer like.. HARDCORE. I'm guessing it's because I have an older version of safari but I can't upgrade because I'm on an older MacOS. I think it's because of that derpy bar-thing at the bottom.. which I can't seem to disable :/

Yeah.. crashes every time. Very annoying. :C Using firefox now but FF is a RAM-hor.. and kinda hard/ impossible to use when I have it, Photoshop, Quicktime, and Skype open all at once (when I am working on stuff.)

Just letting you know.

donavannj September 6th, 2011 6:07 PM

What style are you using? I've noticed that The Stand Nexus will sometimes lock up the browser window no matter what browser you use.

Kura September 6th, 2011 6:10 PM

Tried both the default and pokelink..

Edit: and it doesn't lock up.. it full on crashes with no warning.

PokéSwimmer September 6th, 2011 6:13 PM

Snow Leopard upgrade is just 30 bucks, I'd say just go for that if your computer can support it. It will even upgrade Tiger (though Apple doesn't want you to know that :D ). After you upgrade, you'll be able to use Chrome, which has never given me any problems.

parallelzero September 6th, 2011 6:14 PM

Honestly the only thing I think I can suggest is to use a different browser. The forum isn't optimized for older versions of browsers.

That said... which bar thing? Oo I don't see anything like that.

I do want to get it regardless.. but that's not the point. I think that any site should be compatible with any browser. What if I didn't have $30 to spare? I don't expect anyone to buy it for me- especially not Pokecommunity.. lol.
I just haven't upgraded yet because (hush) I have cracked software on here, and I've been in the process of backing up all my info on HDD and hard copy but it takes a very long while.

And yes, the bar thingy at the bottom.

And really, it is a problem with the way the site's encoded. :/ I mean.. I could try safari on here (I'm on a PC atm) but I'm not in the mood to risk it.. I've got a bunch of tabs open (working on something atm/ posting here as it's drying..) :C

But that's pretty much this site's attitude towards everything I've ever brought up; "Oh well, your problem is legitimate but it works fine for me so it's too much of a hassle, too bad so sad." :C Like.. I figured I'd at least get a reason why even if it wasn't going to be fixed. Pretty disappointing if you ask me; s'why I'd never bother to donate here.

I dunno, man.. @[email protected] Doesn't Jake do the layouts? Ask him I guess. And ask him to take it out, it's annoying :// and causes problems.

It's kind of like a shortcut thing that appears on the bottom of most skins, if not all, but I think it's mostly ignored, or most people don't notice it's there? o.o; At least, I think that's its purpose.

I've noticed this problem, as well on my Mac. I inspected the coding through Google Chrome on my Mac and it (Safari) crashes due to an HTML conflict with a coding within the Safari program. (I believe this is that bar at the bottom of the screen.) My suggestion is downloading an alternate browser for internet usage and trying to disable any un-needed built in features within that browser. (Since you stated you are using an older MacOS, right?) It'll make the OS run a little bit smoother, however if you are using Photoshop or other highly depending software, I'd suggest you don't use the browser since it will slow it down no matter the settings or changes.

Or avoid going on Pokecommunity.. which I had been doing.. :C Every time I came to visit back it'd do that and just is frustrating.. Every other site runs pretty smoothly.. even facebook which is loaded up with crappy flash addons... :/ And running photoshop SHOULD be fine with stuff if I have a good processor and a lot of RAM (which I have) I just don't like when I have it on all day (9-10 hours) and the fan starts to run loud because firefox has been open. It's fine if I keep safari running..

Problem is.. it's something on pokecommunity's end that they should look into. Sure I could just switch browsers but the whole point of this section was so give suggestions and to make them aware of problems with the site.

.o.

I just don't understand why we just can't have an option to disable that bar and call it a day :/ As it seems to be a problem with other browsers and apple.

donavannj September 6th, 2011 7:04 PM

If you can get into your User CP, you should be able to disable the context bar. Second from the bottom of the Edit Options page.

I currently have Google Chrome opened(surprisingly even guests can see this bar, I suppose), and the same bar breaks with the same incompatible skins, and both of my browsers are completely updated.

I got about four computers I'm fixing and one of the computers has an older Mac-OS in it and it apparently clashes with the bar in the HTML coding format. However, I'm taking a better look at it right now, it could also be possibly a clash with the OS itself. Since, we are talking about an older OS and from how it looks, it could be the OS is clashing with the coding, not the browser. However, I'm not 100% sure, that the browser is the fault nor the OS. It is a possibly that the coding with the bar is causing the problem, too. Like I'm said, "I'm not 100% sure and I'm not so certain on the problem."

EDIT: I believe donavannj solved the problem.

donavannj September 6th, 2011 7:09 PM

To add more information to my solution, I do believe that bar's been in place since March.

I've been gone since that time. I've only been visiting once every like 2 months since a bit before then.

It's disabled but I'd have to test it out. It'd crash for me even if I wasn't logged in on Safari.. but maybe that's cause the forum default has the bar set there at the bottom automatically?

Either way I'll try it to see :C.. I'll let you know..

Edit: Nope! Crashed hardcore again. Sorry.. ://

Even tried switching themes.. it goes super slooooww and then crashes. I mean like.. it crashes within like 3-5 pages. Just BAM.. makes it close unexpectedly.

Cura September 6th, 2011 7:27 PM

It could be the OS is clashing with the browser's ability to run the scripts on the page. Since, it's an older Mac OS, it just may not have enough power to run the browser.

Kura September 6th, 2011 7:36 PM

Who knows..? It has enough power to run everything else (lookbook, like 10 youtube pages playing at once, etc etc.) And heck I do major photo editing and vdeoediting on here with no bumps or glitches.. If pokecommunity isn't optimized for "older OSes" (it's not even that old.. like what, 4 years?) then they should at least state that (in the appropriate section) just like every other site that has problems with certain browsers does. No BSin'~

:/ Like I know some sites have problems with IE.. but.. this isn't IE.. :c..

parallelzero September 6th, 2011 7:43 PM

If it isn't a common problem with an identifiable cause, I don't know how much we can really do for you. Out of curiosity, what version of Safari are you using? One of my roommates is running MacOS, so I'll see if I can borrow it.

Kura September 6th, 2011 7:49 PM

Version 3.2.1 (4525.27.1)

.o. All I ask is that you look into it. If it cant be fixed then I'll just visit on Firefox.. but I just wouldn't appreciate if my problem were just blown over like it was a waste of time when it's a legit issue ;c Even still, I thank you for your time <33 :3

lol this thread makes me feel like pokecommunity has customer service..

Rukario September 7th, 2011 12:23 AM

HELLO!

Thank you for calling PokeCommunity Prime Support!
My name is.. Peggy!

...

don't think your issue will be just blown over.. but, and its a big but (LOL), we do want to make sure its not something on your end.. some funky settings, or EOL or buggy browser that really should get updated.

The site's code is 98% xhtml compliant and shouldn't crash ANY modern browser. There may be rendering issues in older or buggy browsers however.

Now for your issue, I'm sorry to say but the burden is on you to provide as much info as possible relating to the crash: url, theme/style used, total ram in comp, other processes running, ram used, cpu used, any error/crash logs (you may have to search for them) and so on.

The more technical your details are the faster we can locate any issues here on PC.

I'd also like you to try some of the lighter themes, like vb default, or generic2, and so on.
let us know if any themes allow it to load or if it still just crashes.

that's all for now, I'll prolly have more for you when you update next..

You're running Safari 3? O_o That software is ancient (and prone to crashing iirc). As long as you're running Tiger, you should be able to upgrade to Safari 4 (which can be found here).

Kura September 15th, 2011 8:17 PM

I had no clue about that! (It wasn't set to update in my apple-updates and so I thought that was the final version for my OS)

Anyways, I updated and the site is running smoothly for me now. Next time someone has a similar issue, let them know this solution please.
