Favorite Generation 1 Pokemon: Mew Partner Pokemon: Charlie the Mew Why it is: Mew is totally adorable and it is a powerhouse being able to know transform, metronome and learn any TM making it a master of moves. (just like Arceus is a master of types) Yay I'm pretty much the first person! Anyways, here's a topic for this club What in your opinion is the most admirable thing about Gen. 1 Pokemon?. |
Welcome, ShadowTheDarkrai!
As far as your topic, I think the answer for me would have to be that the Gen I Pokemon is where Pokemon started out. Therefore, their memorability is what appeals most to me; they're the Pokemon I've known since I was 7-8. |
I'll sign up here!
Username: AlexOzzyCake Favorite Gen I Pokemon: Sandshrew Partner Pokemon: Chilli the Sandshrew <3 I like how their designs seem a lot more basic than more other generations. "Lets make a caterpillar. Let's make a bee. Let's make a mouse. Let's make a fish. Let's make a starfish. Let's make a pink blob with arms." I find that kind of design process absolutely charming and it makes me love Gen I Pokemon a lot. <3 |

Alex, I couldn't agree more. The concepts were basic, but effective. It was very clear what they were based on, their names are very reflective thereof, and Gen I is the only gen where I never looked at a Pokemon's design and thought "WTF is that thing?!" |

Welcome, ikarochase!
Starting up a topic for us: Does it seem to you that the popularity of the original 151 has dwindled down in recent times with the new gens? Why/why not? From my viewpoint, though they're still among my favorites, among the general population they have definitely become less popular, and it's a shame. What with the fact that many have received evolutions, the originals we've come to know and love have been forgotten. Also, with the younger generation of today that Pokemon is generally aimed at, they have never been fully exposed to the classics that this club is dedicated to. |

Does it seem to you that the popularity of the original 151 has dwindled down in recent times with the new gens? Why/why not?]
pokemon have been aiming for the younger audiences insofar. and since we are the generation of the classics, it's been hard to reintroduce them to the mainstream play, especially as their remakes are already on the now obsolete gameboy advance. also, stats also take some of the older generation to the new gens. Several newly introdueced pokemon have been given beastly stats whereas most gen 1 Pokemon have been relying only on gimmicks and strategy to stay alive in the OU tier. Out of the 45 OU pokemon, only 9 are from gen 1. Cloyster, simply because of it's shell smash + icicle spear/ rock blast combo. Dragonite, well, he is a beast actually. Same as Gengar, Gyarados and Starmie. Ninetales for his drought. tentacruel is a great Toxic Spiker. Vappy for his Baton passing abilities, and with the new Wish mechanics, he became a great cleric. And venusaur for the newly rising popularity of sunny day teams. Compared to other pokemon in the OU, these Pokemon would be rarely seen in the metagame (except for Ninetales. That fox shows up quite a lot.) They have several Pokemon to compete with like Landorus, Metagross, Mienshao, FERROTHORN. How would their popularity not dwindle. |

DualBlade, to answer your question, at least I like Lapras. imo, it's one of the best Water-types of Gen I. I would like to bring up a point about Gen I that can and I hope will lead to further discussion: When I first started playing these games when I was young, I didn't even know about stat values, base stats, STAB, or anything like that. I just used my favorite Pokemon, and I had fun with it. I feel this is another big appeal of Gen I for me. EDIT: Whoa, Taposa, you ninja'd me! I'll get you in the list. Welcome! |

Members, you may have noticed that I posted a poll. Please vote in the poll, as the results will be used by me to judge whether or not we have enough eligible participants for me to start WiFi-based events in this club.
|
Yes. Pokemon back then were for enjoyment ONLY. No EV, no natures, no hidden values and such. We were kids back then, but everybody grow up. Most want something more exciting. Something.. different.

I thought throwing a rock then feeding it would make it more easier to catch and less likely to run. I never thought that it would cancel out.
|
Back in that time, the only thing I ever paid any attention to with building my teams was types. I assumed most all Pokemon of the same type were about equal. Now, I realize just how wrong I was. I was like "So THAT's why Pikachu kept getting stomped by Gyarados." XD
|
I just used my favorites. My team usually consists of my starter, a surfer, a flyer, and three other random dudes.

but when i think about it, i prefer it the way it was back then - carefree playing. now that i've learnt about IVs and EVs and natures and what not, i take even longer to play the games because i'm trying to get a pokemon of suitable nature. not to mention the characteristics. all these things complicate the game a whole lot, but at least it increases the challenge (: |
Welcome, gunnerpow7!
I agree on the fact that it was much more fun when we could play the games carefree. But, now, while I do like the challenge, it's impossible for me to play a game without thinking "Wait, what's that Pokemon's nature?" |

miltankRancher, you are not the only one who gets nostalgia in this club. I give myself nostalgia here. :) |
I remembered the first time i played Red. I really had a hard time choosing what starter to use. should have chosen a Bulbasaur
|
Please note everyone: before we have our first WiFi event, I want to have at least 12 eligible participants. Invite people who you think might want to join this club. :)
I always chose Charmander myself in the old games. Charizard is awesome. |
For me, when I first start playing any game of Pokemon, I always use my starter and only train it while I catch other pokemon, I don't train them... But now... nothing changed.. except the fact that I know now how to use the tpes... =)

Starters wise, I always used to choose Charmander and my brother ALWAYS choose Squirtle (we always restarted the games at the same time to play through them together and stuff then we also cable battled, I physically cried once when he kept choosing Squirtle XD) but now since I actually know about Pokemon rather than choosing what's cutest, I always go for Bulbasaur due to my profound love of Poison type Pokemon :3

Members, I am now starting our first event within this club. This is not WiFi based, so everyone can participate.
Create-a-Banner Contest For this event, members are to create their own banners/userbars for this club. Each member may submit up to 3 banners or userbars. These can be 100% custom-made, or they can utilize official artwork/sprites and screenshots from the games or anime. Send them to me by PM. From the date of my post describing the event, you have one week (12/28/2011) to send in your work. All participants get a new partner Pokemon of their choice. Mention what you want your new partner Pokemon to be in your PM. Then, I will hold a voting period for who has the best work. Whoever has the most votes will get to have one of their partner Pokemon upgraded to shiny. Everybody's submission, regardless of quality, will be added to the OP after the event is over. EDIT: Made some changes above if you read it before I made the changes. |
Me gusta of course. though I know I will not win, but try I must.
|

And my first PM has been received! Members, I expect to see many more PMs. Get your work in before the deadline! :)

My brother and I very often would exploit the cloning glitch (the one that occurs via trading), and then we would make a team of 6 Lv100 Mewtwo. I know that's kind of a "noob" thing to do by my standards today, but back then I loved it! I would make that team and use it in Pokemon Stadium, and I'd be nearly unstoppable. :)
|
Wow, I told myself to remember to vote in the poll, and what did I forget to do? Hahaha. *votes*
Also, I'm gonna try for the banner contest even though my bad banners are bad and I should feel bad. |
And with NightOfRemorse, that's two entries, plus myself. Yes, I am participating.
Note everyone: I have made one more final change to the contest. To remove any possible unnoticed bias from myself, I have decided to allow all members to vote on whose is the best. There will be a 4-day voting period starting midnight EST on Dec 28. No voting for yourself. |

Can you say over-powered Charizard? That's what I did! :) An over-powered Pokemon in any game is able to sweep the in-game foes. Gen I is no exception.
As of yet, we have four participants for the contest: Me, miltankRancher, ikarochase, and NightOfRemorse. Looking forward to seeing more submissions. :) |
Talking about overpowered, I used to play Red version and have a level 20 Charmeleon by Brock then a Charizard by Misty. That made sure i never lost
Muhahahahah >:D |

well, overleveled pokemon would really sweep, considering the great gap between wild Pokeomon and that SINGLE POKEMON THAT HAVE DEFEATED EVERY TRAINER IN THE REGION. |

Welcome, Para-Dox! You might wanna fix the username typo, though. XD
I must agree that the Nidos are pretty cool, among the most iconic Poison-types. I always loved them in the Pokemon Stadium rental Pokemon. |
I used a Nidoking once in my FireRed game. It was a beast! Megahorn plus Sludge Bomb plus Earthquake. \m/
|
Thinking back on the first gen, a lot of awesome pokemon were really pointless because they learnt nothing by leveling, like Rhydon and the Nido's. I found that quite disappointed.
|
That is understandable. With the lack of moves in existence, it is hard to distribute much power to Pokemon.
|
So, we're just 3 votes away from having enough eligible members to hold a WiFi-based event I've been planning since I started this club. Since all but one member have voted, we need to try and get more members!
On Pokemon not learning many moves in Gen I, omg yes. In the current gen, some stone-evolvers need to be kept unevolved until they learn certain moves. Back then, however, Pokemon like Clefairy had horrible level-up movesets, so they could be evolved immediately and taught TM moves. |
Stone evolution is pretty hard to decide now, since some Pokemon learn much stronger attacks at higher levels when unevolved.

OMG OMG MEWTWO. i love Mewtwo so much! Merry christmas guys!
|
In the first gen The only type that didn't have more than 3 stone evolutions that evolved by stone was Electric with only Pikachu and Jolteon.
Out of all the stone evolutions the eevee's were the best even with their poor move sets. Also Did anyone do the Slowpoke/Poliwag guys Mew cheat in Red/Blue/Yellow? |
vaporeon could utilize those moves pretty well, Jolteon is simply a speedy beast, and Flareon is hot. I guess.
Cheat? Nah. when I was playing that time, I am not familiar with any kind of cheat in Red. |
No, I didn't utilize the Mew Glitch myself. But, apparently my brother had, because I remember him having had a Mew. Also, it was interesting that in Pokemon Stadium, there was a trainer in Prime Cup (iirc) who had a Mew.
|
Well you obviously have the multiplication of item cheat.
But yeah there is an actual legit way to get Mew in the Gen I games without a gameshark or whatever. Granted i discovered this when i was young and don't care much for cheating at all |
I used to be an honest gamer. But then i took a cheat to the emulator.

Welcome, Ciax! Be sure to vote in this club's poll for my reference for the purpose of creating WiFi-based events. Also, if you want to take part in the Create-a-Banner contest, you still have until December 28 at 11:59PM EST to submit your work!

welcome Ciax! good to see you have a wide plethora of first gen favorites. It is actually the best generation amayright?
|
As the deadline approaches for submissions for the Create-a-Banner contest, please remember that the absolute maximum size a banner should be is 600x350px, as this is the maximum space allotted for a signature. Also, the file size should not exceed 1MB. Remember, the main purpose for these banners is for use in signatures. It is advisable to leave some space in the vertical area so that members may have room for text in their signatures. Just remember to bear the PokeCommunity signature rules in mind when making these.

Thanks for the welcome. I have no idea how to make banners so I cannot participate in the contest. But I do have access to B/W Wi-Fi. I love nearly all of the original 151, not sure why but they just have a certain charm.

still my banner is fail. I am in anguish about it.
seems like I am the only not having an access to wifi. lol. |
Members, please bear in mind that I may not be able to start the voting period for the Create-a-Banner contest until the 29th, rather than the 28th, as I have a family issue with which I will be very busy that day. If I don't post saying to start the voting, just be patient and I'll have everybody's work up as soon as I can. However, please do not submit contest work after the deadline; it will not be accepted for the contest (though it will be added to the OP.)

So, what's the current topic? |
i don't know if we are allowed to post topics yet. it is not mentioned. but if we could...
Which pokemon from the other generation do you think would be best at the first generation? I think Miltank would be since it is practically a female counterpart of Tauros. |
Welcome, pancakeonmyhead!
Yes, miltankRancher, we can always start new topics. To answer yours, I would have to say that it would have been very interesting to have Pokemon like the Electrike line in Gen I. I say this because Gen I did not have many good Electric-types. Manectric would have been perfect, as it fares really well in its generation and beyond. |
Which pokemon from the other generation do you think would be best at the first generation?
i think so the Igglybuff line that is Igglybuff,Jigglypuff & Wigglytuff and the Cleffa line that is Cleffa,Clefairy & Clefable would be best in gen I Spoiler:
|
I agree with the babies. Since their father's and mothers exist, the babies should also. or maybe first gen is still too immature to reproduce. O_O
And also Manectric's line. first gen only has Raichu, Electrode, magneton, and Zapdos. Barring Zapdos, none is too much useful to be used ingame. |
