Vocabulary that the Pokemon games have taught you?
Something I've always found interesting is the amount of vocabulary that I've first seen in a Pokemon game.
What vocab have the games taught you? For me, I can only remember two right now, but I know there are more that I've since forgotten. 1. to suppress, as in "[Opponent's] Clear Body suppressed [User's] Intimidate!" 2. calamitous, from PMD: "[User] used Sheer Cold! [Opponent] took calamitous damage! It's a one-hit KO!" |
I learned what "buffeted" (*insert Pokemon here* is buffeted by the sandstorm!) meant after playing the Pokemon games that involved sandstorms and hail.
I still don't know what it means, but professor birch and rowan used the word aplomb
I practically learned English by playing Pokemon :D
The word "effective" on super-effective.
I learned the words 'intimidate', 'endeavor' (that's how it's spelled in Pokemon), 'moxie', 'docile' and probably a few more.
I basically started to learn English thanks to Pokémon. :'D By the time I actually had English classes I had already played Red and Silver, giving me quite an advantage in English. : >

Pokémon has definitely boosted my vocabulary, I have learnt words and the meaning of those words all thanks to Pokémon!
Fatigue from the move outrage.
'Aplomb' - Ruby and Sapphire.
'Elixir'. 'Nonchalant' - PMD2. |
Oddly, I don't remember particularly learning the meaning of difficult words from the NPC conversations on my first few playthroughs (probably because back then, I didn't care about what they said to me that much).
I could say that I learned a lot in terms of sentence structure, grammar, etc. from Pokémon given my young age (and English not being my native language) when I started playing the games. Not to mention finding out what defense, agility, tackle, constrict and many other Pokémon words meant. Now that I realize it, I definitely owe a lot to Pokémon (although a few other games aided my English as well). |
A few things from GSC, like 'quantity', and one thing that always comes to mind is from RSE (or dppt?): that soil always seemed to be loamy.
buffeted. LOL. I first heard it in Ruby in the snadstorm route.
Elixir as well back in the good old Pokemon Blue and Pokemon Red.
:t354:TG |
Buffeted, ether, elixir, Dexoyribonucleic Acid (from Deoxys...not in the game per se, but you know), endeavor, intimidate, most natures (timid, naive, docile), there's plenty of stuff. Can't name it all though!
learnt from gsc that 'foe' meant enemy.
then rse learnt that natures can be used in my essays to describe attitudes etc. |
I have learn better English thanks to Pokémon. I have learned few words like "potion", "elixir" and "foe". There are other words but I can't remember them at the moment.
I learnt the phrase 'just joshing' in reference to a joke or mocking
I remember learning guillotine, magnitude, and seismic (from seismic toss). The natures also helped a bit, especially learning "adamant".
Some of the words that I first encountered in Pokémon games: anxious, flinch, evade, agility and ember.
When I first picked up my first PARLYZ HEAL I had to ask Mum what Parlyz meant and she figured it was something to do with paralysis and told me all about it. So I learned the words "paralysis" and "paralyse" from Pokemon :P
Quite a few, actually. It's hard to pick examples from the top of my head, but I'll try. A lot of the natures come to mind, for example, naive, modest... There's also words like endeavour. Yeah, there are more, I'll just have to remember them. xD
"Fainted"...for all the wrong reasons. :(
Elixir, though I pronounced it wrong for the longest time. :P
There's also a lot of the natures, too. I had zero clue what most of them meant until I guess somewhat recently lol. It's a bit embarrassing to think about, actually! Modest I thought was the complete opposite of what it was, for example. |
Buffeted, just like Platinumdude. Can't really remember anything else but I do remember that I used to always pronounce Geodude as Gouda because I had NO idea how it was pronounced hahaha.
I learned a load of colours from Gen I and II. The difference between fuchsia and mauve, for example, is just STRIKING! If anyone mentions viridian or saffron or cerulean, I know exactly what they're talking about, and it's all thanks to Pokemon.
"Buffeted," "elixir," "ether" (I pronounced it as though it rhymed with "weather"), "barrage," and "uppercut."
when I was just 14 years old and played the gold rom on pc: (before they were out)
the only thing that was more or less translated was. Hey you are pretty good don't you want my number. the 'pretty good' was the thing I learnt from the games- since before that I only knew the 'pretty' as in 'pretty girl' meaning. and then some others later (on english roms where I have played the local language already) 'potion, antidote, repel. lol. |
TERRAIN. WHEN I DISCOVERED THAT I THOUGHT IT WAS LIKE THE MOST AWESOME WORD EVER. I felt like such a smart kid for knowing what that meant really. Route... not so much. But I didn't know it before!
Like all of you though, probably elixir, protege was a definite, omg there's so much more!! :( Uhhh foe, yeah. Johto/Hoenn basically taught me everything since I was at the age to learn things more then. XD OH. BRAILLE. I THOUGHT IT WAS SOME RANDOM THING UNTIL I WAS LIKE "OH... THIS IS REAL." Remind me to play through Hoenn sometime soon so I can remember more, because I'm 99% sure there's a lot more from Hoenn. I love this thread btw, but yeah! I'll try and think of more and come back to edit, or post or something like that. :) Also I'm sure Ranger taught me some words too, idk. |
Let's see, I started in first grade, so I learned:
Paralyze, confusion, psychic, rare, buffeted, teeter, hyper, beam, bolt, cycling, awaken, tomb, ruins, surf, blast, quiz, and so many more. I wasn't the brightest little kid. :'D |
