When did you first start playing pokémon!
When did you first start playing pokémon!
Hey Guys :cheeky: I was just wondering what was your first ever pokémon game! Mine was pokémon yellow for the Gameboy!! Also what is your favorite generation of games! mine has to be the second generation they were when I got old enough to actually have enough patience to complete a pokémon game! Also guys could you please check my youtube channel out, I have just started doing a pokémon liquid crystal Lets Play and I need all the support i can get:D Here's my channel link! youtube.com/user/MrCrispyGames |
Well son... Many many years ago when the sun was red and it painted the city through the cloudless day... i saw my dad arrive with a green Game Boy Color, which made my childhood what it is today...
A couple of days later pokemon yellow came out, and whoopsie dee doo. I happened to have founded a used one in the game store near me, needless to say. Pokemon Yellow, my first Game Boy game and Pokemon game ever... So many memories attached to it such as me screaming "bro! how many times have i told you not to start a new game OH MY GOOOODDDD" at my elder brother (hence i omitted many parts on that statement for parental control sakes). Good times indeed... That sadly for me are never going to come back :'( Even if i shed a tear... |

Lets cut the story short, I'm not too good at giving fantasy prologues :P My first ever game I've played, like seriously! No Pacman, Mario, Tetris and any of those before! My first ever game I've ever played was Pokemon Blue! Ever since then, it has changed my life. Till now I play Pokemon, currently Black Version on an Emulator. |
I've been playing since Ruby & Sapphire. Yes, I started like midway.
I started in 3rd grade with DPPt.
Haha Guys thanks for the replies:D
I started out with Blue when I was eight or nine years old. Got Red later for Christmas. :3 But like you, I didn't start having the patience to actually put more time into the games until G/S came out haha.
I started playing with crystal i was around 8-9 years old....And now im playing Soul Silver ahhh so meny momories.....happy memories.
I think it was Sapphire many many years ago. It was amazing to play Pokémon at first time.
Yellow in 1999! Though I didn't become too hardcore into Pokemon gaming till Sapphire in 2003. :)
Oh my lord. Uhm, I JUST turned five, I was in Transitional first grade at school, and I had Gold. I'm 19 now. So I think it was the exact year Gold came out? I was little, and didn't even HEAR about Pokemon until that Christmas when I opened up the present and saw Ho-oh staring at me.
Started playing Yellow when I was about 6, so 1999, have played it on and off ever since hhaha.
I first started with Red back in I think '98. Don't hold me to that estimate, because I know its at least been 13 years since I first started playing Pokemon.
I started playing in early 2008. I played Pokémon Sapphire and almost finished it!
It was 1998 with Blue version. Or maybe early 1999. I do recall playing Blue not too long after the initial release of the games.
I started playing Red before everything else.
My brother got that and a Gameboy Color from the "tooth fairy" when we were younger and I took it from him the next week to play... |
My very first Pokémon game was the yellow version, when I was only 5.
I couldn't even read correctly :pink_tongue: Needless to say that I didn't go very far. But it's Pokémon Silver which really taught me how to play to Pokémon, 2 years later. And since this moment I'm a huge fan, and the second gen is and will ever be my favourite generation. |
I started playing after Pokemon Red was released in the UK, I was about 9-10 years old at the time, I still remember catching my very first Pokemon (Kakuna)
I can't remember very well, but I believe it was when I was... 6? I'll just say that, the first Pokemon game I played was Gold Version. I had no idea what I was doing but I got the hang of it by age 9.
Well children, way back when before the gameboy color they had something called gameboy pocket and the game itself had no color on screen, all it had was a little wheel, that made the screen brighter or contrast. The games were called pokemon red and pokemon blue.
I started playing Pokemon at 4th grade. Ruby and Sapphire were my first games; I never got R/B/Y/G/S/C.
Once upon a time, when the world was young and humankind too, something called "Pokémon" was released in the country I resided in. I was but a mere lad, in pre-pubertal age, unmarried and hav'th not felt the fertile bosom of a young woman.
"Trade your Chansey for my Venosaur" quoth she, and whistles thrice. |
Whoever missed out on G/S/C I suggest you go play them now!
Even though I watched the show since the beginning, and started collecting the cards when they first came out, I didn't get my Game Boy until the Summer of 2001, and I didn't have my own game (Gold) until my 10th birthday.
As for my favorite generation, it has to be a tie between the 2nd and the 3rd. I didn't mind R/S/E, but I thought that FR/LG was slightly better than the 2nd gen games. |
Christmas '98, a soon-to-be 8 year old got a purple GBC+Blue while my older brother got a green GBC+Red.
Best. Christmas. Evah. |
Years and years ago.. my first Pokemon game was Yellow and that was given to me by my Aunt she got bored of the game, supposedly and my favorite Generation would have to be.. generation 1, but I also like generation 2. They were both great generations.
Yellow Version for me and I love Hoenn
I started playing Pokemon shortly after Yellow was released. I was five and and I really liked watching the older kids play Red and Blue on their Game Boys at Day Care.
My brother and I begged our parents for Game Boys and we ended up getting Game Boys and games. He got a purple Game Boy Color and Blue Version and I got a Yellow Game Boy Color and Pokemon Pinball. I got Yellow a couple weeks later as a reward for getting a good report card. I was five and my brother was three. My favorite region is Hoenn. I think it's pretty and the berry system is better than the others. |
Started with Red Version all those years ago.
Ah, memories <3 |
I believe I saw millions of threads like this in PC, nevertheless, I shall contribute to this thread.
I started playing Red around 2001/2002 (I can't remember) that was when somebody (which I forget) gave me and my cousin the red cartridge, we took turns to play it on that single cartridge. Well, after 1 year, he suddenly said he lost that cartridge, I was like FUUUUU, and forgotten about it after awhile. Its only 2009 I found that cartridge in his house and asked if he wanted to give me it. Since he doesn't play Pokemon anymore, he agreed and I put that cartridge into my Gameboy Colour and realized that he had a level 100 Snorlax (my favourite pokemon). I know my English is bad. |
I was a late bloomer to the world of Pokemon. I was actually one of those dreadful people in grade school who made fun of those "Pokemon Nerds"... Something I am woefully regretful of... But it was when my brother decided to rent the 5th Pokemon movie did my eyes get openned to the world of Pokemon and all It's glory. It was just a week later that I had to buy Pokemon Ruby. And it was wonderful! And ever since I've had to purchase every version of every generation that has come out. And I've even tried to make amends for all the Pokemon dising I did back in the day by spreading the Pokemon love where ever I can. :D
I got Blue (along with my turqoise Gameboy color) near when it first came out in the UK. :)
Pity that 12 years later the battery on the cartridge no longer works! :( |
I started playing Pokemon Crystal on my Game Boy Advance when I was about 10. My sister had gotten it for her birthday but she didn't like it so I ended up with it. :)

Pretty Lights - Aimin' At Your Head
Blue version; 1998 :cer_boogie:
Only overwritten that data once. Maxed out at 255:00 years ago. |
I believe I started playing about a week after Red came out. I was in my local shop & saw it so begged my Mum to get it for me & she did! I got Blue for Christmas that year too. It must have been years & years ago (I remember being about 7 or 8?... 22 now!)
When I was very tiny and didn't quite know what the concept of Pokemon was, I played on my cousins Blue, Red, or Yellow, I forgot which version he had. I would play it whenever I got the chance. Then I finally got LeafGreen, as I wasn't quite ready to own a game or even a game system. Now I play White and other, yet I still play LeafGreen, I am even doing a nuzlocke run right now!
My first game would be pokemon snap, my first main series game would be gold, but i didnt really kno how to play till i got emerald :3, and my favourite generation would be 3 :D
My first pokemon game was pokemon leafgreen and it was in French.
As for my favorite generation it would be tied from Gen III and Gen IV |
Pokemon Blue, December 25, 1998 ;)
I had a Gameboy, it was my brothers, but they gave it to me since they grew out of it, all I was playing between 99 - 01 was Super Mario Land, Jamed Bond 007, Tennis and some basketball game, then my cousin decided to give me Pokemon Yellow Version, I played that and well, I enjoyed it immensely!
I started playing in 2001, I think. a silver Game boy colour with a Pikachu and a Pichu on it, and Gold Version
1998..a year I'll never forget..when all those grizzly murders occurred in the Arklay Mountains..lol just kidding 1998 was the year I stole Pokemon Blue Version from my brother and it was love at first sight.
2007, Pokemon Diamond. I was 10, and missed all the good stuff, but since I've played every main game (European versions anyway)
Christmas 1998, Blue version along with a yellow Game Boy. Though I did borrow my sister's Game boy color and pinball before that. I still to this day have a copy of Crystal. It's my favorite game ever.
I started on emerald here. Still my fav to this day. It was kinda special in a way since I had to go on a treasure hunt on my birthday to find it.
Being the noob I was I thought I would get gold silver since I thought it was current, but boy was I wrong lol... |
it was the 90's, I was very young so idr the actual year but I know I've been playing for at least 13 years.
Christmas of...1998 or 99, can't remember. I recieved a Gameboy Color and Pokemon Yellow. I then proceeded to rage over Brock and his Rock types for months.
I think it was around the time when I was in the second grade. My mom took me to a store and I could choose from any of the first or second generation games on the GameBoy, and so I went with Blue. :D
Ohh... I think it was around 2004/2005. We got a new neighbour and he had GBA with LG and sapphire. I also had GBA, together with my brother (mine is broken and he bought a new one) anyway, I borrowed his sapphire version and I still have it one place. This was my first time playing pokémon and I'm still enjoying it :D
Unofficially (since I stole it)
Around when Pokemon Emerald came out. I was at Wallmart with my parents and I went into the Electronics section to play the video game demo's. When I noticed the someone had left the video game case open........ I grabbed a gameboy advanced sp and a copy of emerald........... I shoved it in my pants and then rushed to find my parents and asked them for the car keys to chill in the car..... I ran to our car and busted open the gameboy and I put in the emerald game and I started playing it....... Officially (I actually bought it) I bought a Nintendo 3DS and Pokemon Black in 2012........... Lol |
Quote:
I first started playing Yellow, which I got for Christmas in 1999, and got hooked on it almost instantly, but to much initial reluctance when I first opened it. |
I started when back right when emerald was released, but i have always watched the show. so, here's what i did. i got pokemon blue, beat it, then red, beat it, then i bought all 3 hoenn games, beat them eventually, then moved onto gen 4, beat them, bought leaf green and fire red, then waited for black and white. wich i have beat, but i love B/W so much i got white, beat it, now i'm on Black. ^.^
I'm not sure, I think it was maybe around 2005, playing on a friend's Red Version. The first game I actually owned was Diamond, but I've got no idea when I got that. Maybe 2008?
I was 8 years old and my cousin showed me his pokemon blue and I was hooked. I waited until my dad came home and we rushed out to Software etc to buy a Red and Blue copy. My addiction never faded. I bought EVERY game that came out for the handhelds
I started playing on my friends' Blue and Red versions right when they came out. I personally told my parents I wanted to wait for Yellow version to come out, and that was the first game I owned, and got it with the Pikachu edition game boy. I then bought Gold, Silver, Crystal, skipped Gen 3, then bought Diamond Pearl, Platinum, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Black and White. Bought the TCG, Pinball, Snap, Stadium, and rented Puzzle League. I have one of those mystery dungeon games, but don't really like it. I also tried Ranger and didn't like it. Might be that those games are for the younger demographic.
I started playing when my friend lent me his Blue version with an original huge Gameboy to raise some pokemon to battle him. I loved it but didn't get really hooked on it until I bought my very own gameboy colour with Pokemon Yellow. It was pretty much the only game I played on it. I loved Blue but Yellow was great because it had more colours and because Pikachu followed your sprite around <3 (colour with a U because i'm in Canada)
Around 2000, when I was three. I played my brother's Pokemon Blue, even though I couldn't read. I got a GBC and Pokemon Crystal when I was four, for my birthday which was a couple months after the release. I could read a little (Gist of the storyline) and I played it a TON. It took me a while to beat the Elite 4 but I just raised my Typhlosion until it got Flamethrower XD. Haven't stopped playing ever since.
Emerald, still love it to this day as you can see. The main thing that got me was a silly book of facts about the 1st gen pokemon....I was actualy given pokemon stadium 2 a bit before, but I don't count that, but thanks to that I was convinced gold and silver were still current....silly me.
I started playing them back when pokemon red and blue came out. Originally played pokemon blue on the GBP(Gameboy Pocket just in case no one remembers them) my sister had pokemon red and then we got pokemon yellow after that and i have played all of them since then(with the exception of pokemon leaf green).
My first game was pokemon blue I got it when I was 6 in 2000 I think. Oh boy did that game have me hooked. I would spend hours straight playing pokemon as a kid and still sometimes have a long session of pokemon nowadays.
Favorite generation had to be the second, even though I was pissed when my crystal save file got deleted after 120 hours of playtime on it |
I first started playing in 2000, when Crystal just came out. (Ah, nostalgia is overcoming me...) Ever since then, I've gotten every single game except for Black/White.
Pretty much since they games came out here near the end of 98'. One of my friends would never share his game so I asked my mom to buy me it (Red version of course); haven't looked back since, lol.
I didn't start playing the games until I was 13 or something, and that was Yellow and Ruby, on a GBA. I do however remember watching my friends play Red/Blue when we were like 9. I played the TCG instead back then!
I just started at 2010. That was HeartGold and I used a DS Lite. I think I knew that there was Pokemon before 2010 (one of my friends play it), but at that time I don't have any interest in Pokemon.
I'm kinda surprised that there are people who only started a couple of years ago when it's such a big title and been around for such along time, then again there are other games people enjoy playing.
I did get Blue in 1999 so that makes it 13 years this year. |
Saw the Cartoon on Cheese TV in 97 (Aussie Kids show) bought blue, never looked back, they have all been my favourite to date at some point, but Gen IV, especially Platinum is my ultimate favourite.
Zeus |
Pokemon Fire Red. I still have one too, somehow they keep followin gme (this is copy #4... somehow I just keep getting them...). I don't remember how, but I manged to get a hold of a Crystal as well. But I gave it to my cousin ._.
I started when I was about 5 or 6. My Grandma had liked the gamecube and so she bought a gameboy and pokemon yellow to try those two out. She didn't like it and when I came over and started playing it, she happily allowed me to keep both items. My favorite gens as of now would either be 2 or 3.
I remember... December of 1998 when I was 8. I got Pokémon Blue as a Christmas present. Ever since then, I've been hooked on the animé (older sagas) and most of the games. That day changed my whole life. I'm glad I got Pokémon Blue as a present instead of something else.
i could not recall if it was 2001 or 2002, but the first time i started playing pokemon was with crystal. :)
I remember looking for a new game and coming across Fire Red, so I started playing in around 2005.
But one of my friends used to play crystal and I stole his game for like a day, does that count? :p He got it when it came out and 'left' it at my place the same day. Haha. |
I got Blue when I was 14-15. 1999 or 2000 I am not sure which year

I started playing the games around 1999. My aunt had pokemon red and blue which she let me borrow a lot and then I got pokemon yellow for christmas.
I was about 7 or 8.....no wait. Could be earlier. My first game was Pokemon blue, and it was the best game I ever played, even until now. Sadly, I lost the cartridge before I beat the Elite four.
I really loved that game......T.T |
Well, go figure. I was 3 years old when I got a multi-cart in Hong Kong with Red and Blue. But I really only took the games seriously with Yellow, when I was 5 and named all my characters ASH. XD
I don't remember what year it was, but I first started out as an observer - I recall watching my brother playing his copy of Yellow, and finding it intriguing. Eventually, I got my own GBC and a copy of Blue (might have been a present, I really don't remember).
Though I think I didn't pay attention to Blue for very long, since Gen 2 was released soon after... |
I remember it better now.
It was in March of 2000. I've been a fan of the anime since 98 but I never played the games but really wanted to so I asked for a Gameboy Color and a Pokemon game for my birthday. Me and my brothers have birthdays a month apart from each other so my dad, mom , and my grandma took us shopping to get our gifts at the same time. My older brother and both got gameboys and Pokemon blue and Red. I took Pokemon Red and he picked Pokemon Blue. My little brother wanted a N64 but we my parents could afford it so they got him a Gameboy and Game and Watch Gallery 3 instead. |
I think I was 8 when I first started playing Pokemon--Pokemon Yellow. We had it on those 50 games in 1 cartridges, and it was useless saving the game since... well, the game doesn't save at all.
I remember this one time when my siblings and I played ALL day without turning off our GameBoy. The farthest we reached was Saffron City, lol. When the time to sleep came, I was SO hesitant to switch off the unit, thinking I'll never be in this point in the game ever again. |
I've learned my English by trying to understand that "special dutch - frenchish like"
language (= english). By searching the meaning of different words and by learning my native language at school I managed to learn the language by myself. Oh yeah, back to the topic: My first two games were red and yellow. From that moment, it was one of the games I really liked to play. (among others) |
I first started playing pokemon during mid-late third gen. My first ever pokemon game was Mystery dungeon red rescue team. I loved that game soooo much~
Not sure how old I was, but I was playing Emerald on my old GBA. I still play that game on my ds lite. It is definitely one of my favorite games, but I never did get that far.
It was Pokemon yellow and I was 3. Couldn't read but me and my brother spent a long afternoon getting to Lavender Town. Sweet sweet childhood. Next memory of Pokemon is in 2003, with the Pokemon Colosseum advert on TV I remember begging for the GameCube bundle, but my mum couldn't afford it. The year after I got a tribal sp with both fire red and leaf green. I should thank my mother for the awesome childhood.
I was about 2 or 3. My brothers showed me G/S, and I fell in love. I'm 12 now, and I understand Pokemon alot better. The first game that I actually played would be Sapphire.
