Nintendo to Announce a New Game Tomorrow – Pokemon Gray?

Tomorrow at 8:00 PM in Japan (3:00 AM in America), Nintendo is going to announce a new game through Nintendo Direct, their online broadcasting service that is like a TV channel. Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, will announce it. Nintendo rarely announces new games through this medium, so this can definitely be considered a special occasion.
While there is absolutely nothing that states this announcement will pertain to a new Pokemon title, based on all the evidence that has been building up over this past month regarding a Black and White sequel and Kyurem forme, it’s certainly possible that this is where it will first be introduced. After all, Junichi Masuda said to watch Pokemon Smash this Sunday, implying there would be information on a Black and White sequel, so if a new Pokemon game is going to be announced this week, this would definitely be Nintendo’s golden opportunity to introduce it to the world.
We should also note that Sunday is the one-year anniversary of the Nintendo 3DS in Japan. If we do get a “Pokemon Gray,” it will more than likely be on the 3DS, and will more than likely boost the system’s (less than enthusiastic) sales.

So, let's start the discussion!

Moving to Pokemon Gaming Central since although this is Grey speculation, you can speculate on any Pokemon game (no doubt people will say RS remakes for some reason) at PGC while here you can only speculate Grey. However, if Grey is announced tomorrow feel free to make a discussion thread in B/W. for now though, this is kinda covered by release date speculation, so if people wanna speculate if this is Grey they should do so there. Syd if you feel it fits better in VG due to it being just Nintendo then yeah, all i know is it doesnt fit in BW yet.

Cello February 21st, 2012 4:37 AM

They're going to announce it tomorrow? :o
I thought it was this weekend that the announcement would be made.

I feel like this is the 10th time I've heard about them announcing a new game. I just hope it's a good announcement this time and not another spin-off.

blue February 21st, 2012 4:44 AM

Tomorrow!? That's great, looking forward to it regardless of what it may be.

Railgun February 21st, 2012 5:13 AM

Everyone gets excited for Grey just to find out its Trozei 2 lol. Oh the rage from the fans.

"During a Q&A session during a visit to Tokyo on Saturday, Junichi Masuda was asked about when the next main series game, a game after Pokémon + Nobunaga's Ambition, is to come out. In response, he said that he can't really respond to that question but said to watch an upcoming Pokémon Smash episode, due to air this weekend. This was followed by a post on twitter stating the same thing."

I really hope it's not 3DS exclusive. I don't have and won't have one of those -.-

You know they're eventually gonna move the series to 3DS, right? : P
As a matter of fact, if the next release wasn't on 3DS I would be a little surprised, not unless it was a 3rd installment to B&W. Of course it could always have 3DS enhancements, which would make sense why it took them some time to announce it.

I just want my Ruby and Sapphire remake. ._.

blue February 21st, 2012 6:20 AM

I'd love to find out that Gray would be on the 3DS, the battle scenes would be great! The main game I would love right now is an R/S remake but I guess it's just a waiting game. Of course I'm expecting for a spin-off to be unveiled which again would be kind of a let down but everything sounds promising so far. The only spin-off I'd like would be a Mystery Dungeon or Colosseum.

Sydian February 21st, 2012 6:26 AM

I'd rather hear about RS remakes than Grey. I'm sick of Unova and I'm ready to get back to Hoenn. Besides, that 10th anniversary is coming up...

Eagledelt February 21st, 2012 6:35 AM

Time to return to Hoenn ;)

Xander Olivieri February 21st, 2012 6:50 AM

Hopin its about the recently Trade Marked Pokemon Adventure Camp. There is still very little out there known other than its Trade Marked by both Creatures Inc AND Gamefreak. I don't know if this has been done before cause I don't usually see Gamefreak's logo on side series games or associated with them.

I saw someone say Adventure Camp was the next Stadium, which I'm hoping it isn't since Gamefreak is working on it as well. Hope its a new series of handheld games for thr DS/3DS.

Another rumor I saw was that the titles were Pokemon Adventure: Red Camp and Pokemon Adventure: Blue Camp, which would be a good indication that it was a handheld game and possible new focus.

Jellicent♀ February 21st, 2012 6:54 AM

I love Unova and all, but I want to go back to Hoenn. Though, I suppose a Pokemon Gray wouldn't hurt, either.

I know they will move it to full 3DS but I just want to prolong it as much as possible. It is then that I'll stop playing the new games and that sounds a bit sad to me. I dunno. The 3DS is so unnecessary that I'm hoping they'll have mercy on my old school DS. Beh.

Actually yeah I wouldn't mind hearing about what Adventure Camp is too. Hopefully it's not going to be some kind of PokePark type game.
A new stadium game would be cool, so long as it's not like Battle Revolution and like the actual Stadium series.

Oh well. Just in case they DO show something on Nintendo Direct tomorrow morning (3AM) I think I might tune in anyways to see. Been awhile since I did this for a new game announcement.
I remember waiting to watch Pokemon Sunday when they announced HG/SS. Good times! : D

C Payne February 21st, 2012 12:26 PM

Nambunga ambitions or whatever is for the DS and Pokepark 2 was for the Wii(both after the 3DS's Rumble Blast), hopefully this time it's the 3DS' turn again. Hoping for RS 3DS or a Colosseum type game myself, but I guess I'm happy as long as it's decent and is for the 3DS.

Pokemon Gray ftw! Idk why alot of people want a R/S remake. Tbh, I think it's unnecessary to remake them because you can just trade your pokemon from R/S/E to your Pokemon B/W via 4th gen games.

I mainly just want to see Hoenn re-imagined through 2.5D graphics. Heck, 3D would be cooler, though I don't know if that's ever going to happen or not for a main Pokemon series game.

I <3 Hoenn.

The main reason why we need one is because you need to have either a DS Phat or Lite to migrate, which are outdated by 2/3 DS generations and WAY to over priced to buy one now

Mario The World Champion February 21st, 2012 2:36 PM

If they announce Pokemon Gray and it will only be released on the 3DS, I will be angry. I don't know how much the 3DS costs now and I'm not looking to replace my DS Lite. They did the same thing when Pokemon Crystal came out as a Game Boy Color exclusive.

And I am also hoping for a RS remake as well, but not as a 3DS exclusive. I remember when I got those games for my birthday in 2003, I had to wait until Christmas just to get the Game Boy Advance SP to play it.

blue February 21st, 2012 3:23 PM

I'm sure if Gray was released after R/S remakes it would get much less sales than before, mainly because there would be so much hype on the remakes that people won't want to bother with a third game at that current moment. I would like the RS remakes first obviously it's been a long time now waiting and it is getting closer but getting a third game out of the way is kinda good because it makes space for the remakes. I'm not saying it will go in that order, it's most likely but Nintendo are always pulling surprises.. Like I say it's equally plausible to be a spin-off but with the amount of spin-offs recently announced I can't think of any more they would release..

Those of you who say remakes are unnecessary, I think you're kinda wrong let's compare RSE's graphics to BW's graphics... everything moving on and having them on the 3DS would spin a ton of money which is in Nintendo's favour, I won't go into more detail because I'm basically swaying towards a remake discussion but I am looking forward to the upcoming announcement nonetheless.

Khall February 21st, 2012 3:26 PM

I really hope it's an R/S remake. Gray can wait. D:

Alistair February 21st, 2012 3:56 PM

At this point, the only things that matter to me are that it's a mainline title (remake or third title, it doesn't matter) and that it's on the 3DS. I'm starved for a mainline title (since I bought the Japanese Black Version) and I want the game to take full advantage of the available hardware.

It is Nintendo's newer handheld... The DS was released in 2004, it is now 2012, I would be very surprised if the latest Pokemon game wasn't on the 3DS.

I am actually hoping it is, not just because I happen to own one, but because it would push the Pokemon series to a more technologically advanced console. It would be like the update from the GBC to the GBA, or the GBA to the DS. Could you imagine if the fifth generation games were only playable on a GameBoy Color?

Upgrades to newer consoles are needed eventually, and this would be a great time to switch the series to the 3DS seeing how many sales it has had recently compared to it's rather weak launch.

I am hoping for a R/S remakes too... Hoenn was my favorite region, and having a modern game on them would be nothing short of awesome. ;D

And I never noticed that it was going to be it's 10th anniversary soon. I guess this means there is a higher chance for R/S remakes than I had originally thought.

There was a Tweet a couple of days ago by Junichi Masuda that said something along the lines of "I hear rumors about a R/S remake, but I never said anything about that..." This made people think he denied it's existence, when really, he actually never really debunked it downright, it was an ambiguous statement and doesn't imply that we were correct or incorrect, just that "he had never said anything about that".

How would it releasing after RS remakes lower the sales by a lot, especially since it would most likely be a year+ after? If anything, I think the game would get tons of sales(although anything with Pokemon in the name has this opportunity, ha), especially seeing as it being ~ 2 years or more away would most likely guarantee it a spot as a 3DS game, which hopefully would allow it to do WAY beyond what BW can(as DS games).

It might be nice to get rid of Unova asap, but it could also lower the sales if it isn't on the 3DS, as I'm not sure how much more they will be able to add(with BW already taking the DS to it's limits and such).

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Why do people always say this? Did you get mad when they anounced D/P for the DS? Nintendo would have to be complete idiots to release their second best selling series on a outdated system.

Yeah, supposedly on Pokemon Smash. Not sure what is going on tomorrow, as this thread is the first I heard about that. Either way, going to try to see what is up.

bwburke94 February 21st, 2012 4:44 PM

Why are you all calling it "Gray" or "Grey" before the title is announced? Haven't you learned that working titles are a bad idea?

Anyway, the third version is going to be released in Japan in September, guaranteed.

Cello February 21st, 2012 4:46 PM

Well, considering Gamefreak was one of the first with the 3DS development software during the production of B/W, I really don't see why they'd continue to develop for the DS, especially since it's so old, like everyone else has mentioned.

That and the majority of us have played the stuff out of B/W, it would probably help the sales if we took a break from B/W and revisit Unova in Grey version a little further down the road.

I'm pumped to see what the announcement is! RRrrrggg!

Johtomasterandlover February 21st, 2012 4:54 PM

I will be happy anyways if it is the 3rd for Unova, since I was always out-dated since pokemon showed up, and I played nothing but the 3rd games of every generation.
Like, I played Yellow only after R/B (excluding Green), played Crystal after G/S, being Emerald the exception since I got Sapphire first, played Platinum only for the fourth gen and yeah still haven't played W/B so I'm looking forward to the 3rd release of Unova.

What exactly is wrong with calling it what seems to fit to us, especially considering that I doubt anyone on these forums is part of the game development team(in other words, know what it will be called)? I think Chrome sounds better though, heard some people naming the game that before.

Cello February 21st, 2012 8:28 PM

Hey guys, i've been digging through some old (As in last year around the 3DS/B&W launch) interviews that have peaked my interest. The interviews are between Masuda and the Pokemon Company CEO with various remarks on a title being developed for the 3DS, saying that they're developing something that will surprise the player, as well as they want to do something beyond people's expectations.

http://nintendo3dsblog.com/pokemon-company-have-something-in-the-works-that-will-surprise-players
http://nintendo3dsblog.com/masuda-wants-to-do-something-beyond-peoples-expectations-when-asked-about-pokemon-on-the-3ds

Not to mention, there's this news relic that was never explained (This news article was from April 27th, 2011):
http://nintendo3dsblog.com/pokemon-heading-to-the-3ds

NONE OF THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT, as it's all news from last year, but do you think it has anything to do with the upcoming announcements?

Apparently HGSS were also unnecessary since with that logic I could import most Johto pokemon from Colosseum, XD, and FRLG to DPPt. Making more money and appealing to the fanbase is unnecessary? Hardly, a RS remakes appeals both to a wide range of fanbase as you can see by several comments within this topic and abroad as well as Pokemon Co. who will be profiting from a game they already did that is refurbished. Sounds like a win win to me.

Kenshin5 February 21st, 2012 10:08 PM

SSB4 was already announced at last years E3, so it won't be that.

And to people concerned about the new games being on 3DS. It's inevitable that it will happen so you might as well start saving up. They are already releasing games such as Rumble Blast out on 3DS so the transition to 3DS will probably happen sooner then later.

That and being that Kid Icarus Uprising just released, Sakurai tweeted earlier saying that they JUST started working on SSB4, hahaha. So yeah, that game's got a loooooooong way to go before we start hearing about it.

Yeah he is still looking over stuff at Smash Dojo... Not to mention still putting the finishing touches on Uprising.

I am curious though, would Pokemon announce a game way in Advance just for it to be on Wii U? Although Adventure Camp will more then likely be on a current console/handheld. I just wonder since there are already games announced in advance for Wii U as it is.

Now that you mention it, that might be a possibility. I'm a little curious about this now.
We're slowly closing in on the Wii U release, and with Nintendo doing pretty bad with the 3DS launch, they might be trying to gather a better line-up of launch titles from their stronger series, using it as a way to build hype and get more people on-board with the Wii U.

I definitely want to see more Wii U stuff, but I kinda hope this Pokemon announcement isn't for Wii U. D:

It's a shame it wasn't on Nintendo Direct, but oh well. Well, now I have even more of a reason to look forward to the weekend!
I've gotten myself way too excited, to the point of where I'll probably be disappointed if it's not a main series game. D:

This was originally for today because there was speculation that a Pokémon related game was going to be announced on Nintendo Direct but it wasn't so it's pushing to Sunday now. I'm still adamant about Sunday because news can always be right around the corner regardless of the no news today.

If they announced that'd they'd be making R/S remakes, I'd be damn ecstatic. Hoenn was always the region that I enjoyed the most, and with revamped graphics, more pokemon being added in, expanded story, etc., these games will be a must-buy.

Unless that's not what they're gonna be announcing... wouldn't be annoyed but I'm not really interested in gray. Unova never stood out to me as the other regions did.

Jellicent♀ February 22nd, 2012 3:33 PM

They better not announce another spin-off. I will be mad. Watch it be another stupid Ranger game! I would HAVE to hit someone/thing.

...of course, I honestly wouldn't mind a Pinball. c':

Cello February 22nd, 2012 5:12 PM

I'm actually kinda scared we wont get an announcement at all now.
I think Masuda was just plugging for the show. D:

He never actually said there was announcement, he just said to watch the show.
According to the upcoming episode summary of Pokemon Smash, there's no mention of a special announcement, which they usually do say something about a big announcement in the next episode.

I really hope they do have an announcement, else i'm gonna be disappointed.. D:

Hikamaru February 22nd, 2012 5:52 PM

I could see the Pokemon Smash crew announcing either a spin-off or Gray, it's sorta 50-50.

Sydian February 22nd, 2012 6:01 PM

Bah, bummer if that really is the lineup and we don't get this anticipated announcement. :/

Cello February 22nd, 2012 6:13 PM

There is still a possibility that this is going to be an episode that announces the announcement, however much sense that makes, heh. : P
Kinda like with HG/SS when Pokemon Sunday showed the gold and silver balls at the end of an episode, only to actually announce the titles the following Sunday's episode.

Briefly commenting on this; hopefully I can add more remarks later. Admittedly, I got excited when I came across the news earlier. :cer_boogie: It looks like a lot of people (from websites I've visited) seem pessimistic about the announcement, though, likely because they're guessing that the announcement will be underwhelming - pertaining to a Pokemon spinoff instead of "Gray Version" or "Ruby/Sapphire remakes".

Since Kyuremu and the Sacred Swordsmen movie is upcoming, I'm thinking/hoping that the announcement will probably be Gray Version - it has been a while since Black/White Version's Japanese release (September 2010), and February 2010 was when we first got word of the "existence" of the 5th generation of Pokemon. Furthermore, IIRC it was a question specifically pertaining to Black/White that prompted Junichi Masuda to respond with such an announcement about Pokemon Smash.

Alternatively, since Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition, a rather unexpected crossover title, is getting released in March 2012 (next month) in Japan, it would make sense to have content relevant to that game... Or, yet another Pokemon spinoff could get announced.

As much I'm really hoping for RS remakes, I'm doubting that'll be the announcement (with the aforementioned Kyuremu/Keldeo movie, it would seem weird to have Kyuremu focus in the anime movies and Groudon/Kyogre/Rayquaza focus in the games simultaneously), although this scenario does feel similar to when the televised debut of Heartgold/Soulsilver on Pokemon Sunday was *hinted at* a few days in advance to the TV premiere and Nintendo's official announcement of the HGSS games' existence (ah, such a glorious day).

Or, the thing will be unpredictable and...we'll see what gets announced when the time comes. >.> In any case, here's hoping for something awesome (optimism FTW)! :D

blue February 23rd, 2012 12:36 PM

Well this week seems to be going quick so we will have this Pokémon Smash Sunday news in no time!

I thought that, maybe we will see Red & Blue balls or Kyogre and Groudon silhouettes, either that or the silhouette of a new Kyurem forme. Or just no Pokémon announcement whatsoever which would be a let down.

That would actually work out really well, considering how they used the gyroscope in OoT 3DS for the camera.

Superjub February 23rd, 2012 2:01 PM

Oh, I don't know. It's gotten to the point that I just expect spin-offs now. :O But, if it is a new main Pokemon game and not something minor, I'll be so happy. If it is a main Pokemon game, I don't mind whether it's a R/S remake or Pokemon Grey. I just want a new, main series Pokemon game. I do think they'd do Grey, and if they do, I hope they add a lot more to Black/White, such as a proper safari zone, Pokemon walking behind you, contests (doubt it though), maybe another region to extend the length of the game etc. Anyway, either way, I'll be very happy. :D

Xander Olivieri February 23rd, 2012 3:54 PM

Could be the Adventure Camp announcment. (No I will not shut up about it until I see something from either Nintendo or Gamefreak XD )

I was going through some old archives on Serebii and found a Sequel to Gale of Darkness for the 3DS that I think was shown at E3. If at all possible I'm praying that THAT is what's going to be shown.

blue February 23rd, 2012 3:59 PM

Never heard of (or seen) about Adventure Camp what's is based on?

Yeah, that's it. I posted a link to an old news article related to that on page 2.
http://nintendo3dsblog.com/pokemon-heading-to-the-3ds

I wonder if that's the announcement, or ever going to be explained.

Jellicent♀ February 23rd, 2012 5:09 PM

I really hope it isn't just XD for the 3DS. Really? I already have it for the Gamecube, why would I want it for my DS?
I liked the whole, catch a Pokemon, heal it's heart, save the day idea, but seriously, I don't want it for my DS. I certainly don't want the same exact game, either.

C Payne February 23rd, 2012 5:11 PM

I thought that whole XD sequel thing on the 3DS was just a rumor? In any case, if it does happen to show up, then I'm 1000% sold, although it would seem like it might be saved for the Wii(U) instead? Although I'd hope for the 3DS; now you're all getting me excited about another addition to the shadow pokemon series, ha.

Quixote February 23rd, 2012 5:13 PM

Honestly, when it comes to things like this, I always try to stay pessimistic because usually they release something that I don''t really want. Remember when they said there would be a big announcement in January and it was just releasing Keledo?

blue February 23rd, 2012 5:44 PM

It's likely it's fake considering it sparked out of exsistance for months although the whole concept I'd love even if it has been on GC.

That's what I think. The pokemon company is usually not one to show a game and stop giving updates.

Sydian February 23rd, 2012 5:53 PM

I would actually love XD on my 3DS, however, I'd rather have a Colosseum-esque game rather than an XD port. I want those gen V 3D models put to use! And not to mention, gen IV and V shadow Pokemon. :3 What joy! Bahhh. You guys are getting me way too hyped up.

...SHADOW VICTINI. ;___; Like my Victini persona that I made up forever ago and hardly use BUT STILL it would be nice to see my dreeeeeeams come truuuue~!

Yay!
I knew I should have kept checking Masuda's blog daily. I checked it like once this week and saw that his last post was awhile back and just decided to stop checking.

But that's awesome, now we know he wasn't just plugging for Smash! Thanks for posting that bro.

P0kelegend February 24th, 2012 2:11 PM

Lots of people keep saying that this week, it'll just be the announcement of the announcement (so that they will say to tune in next week to see the announcement). But I doubt it, the announcement is more than likely this week as Masuda is actually appearing on this week's show. Less than 24 hours to go!

I'll be happy whether its Gray, R/S remakes, a new Stadium game on 3DS.

I would SO rack up the money, then. :)

xSkullKing16x February 24th, 2012 3:22 PM

I really hope it will be for both, the 3DS and the regular. I would buy the game, but then save up for the 3DS and the game for that.

Railgun February 24th, 2012 3:37 PM

Watch us get Keldeo cups jk. Should be exciting. I wonder if the the game is further in developmen then we think and he is just using this date since its the day before the 16th bday

Could be R/S remakes but using these graphics. That would be a nice treat

blue February 24th, 2012 3:58 PM

Don't care how many times I say it I want remakes, it's going to be on my mind until we find out and if its not announced it will be on my mind until they finally announce it ;_;

Speedster February 24th, 2012 4:39 PM

I really can't wait to see this announcement. That's why I'm glad I'll be able to wake up a read the results. I don't think it will be Stadium Remake/Sequel or a new Mystery Dungeon because I'm pretty sure they said it would be the next main series or something like that indicating it wasn't a spin-off. So that narrows it down to 2 games. Gray or RS Remakes. Can't wait!

Cello February 24th, 2012 8:48 PM

It's times like these I kinda wish I was in Japan.
I remember hearing about how when Pokemon and Dragon Quest games release it's like a Holiday in Japan. I can't even begin to imagine how antsy everybody is there to hear the news, hahaha.

P0kelegend February 24th, 2012 8:59 PM

I really hope this is a main game announcement. Im worried its just going to end up being some Keldeo distribution or something O.o.

Masuda is really hyping this one up though and the fact he is appearing on the actual show makes me feel that its going to be big. Im just confused as to why they didn't hype this announcement up on the previous episode? It sounds like this was a last minute thing put together IMO.

Nah, the Keldeo distribution was announced last week on PokeSmash. So at least we know it's not that! :P

Tachikaze February 24th, 2012 9:07 PM

I really hope it's Grey, or at least not a spinoff game. I'd rage if it were something stupid like Trozei or yet another mystery dungeon.

Oops, must have missed that. Well that's great news then, it has to be about something we don't know about. It would be cool if they reveal Kyurem's new forme (that in itself pretty much confirms the new game anyway), but I would rather them just name the game and reveal Kyurem's forme in Coro Coro. Doesn't really bother me. I would prefer R/S remakes over all of those but we'll see how it goes.

I've never played Pokémon Snap before but the amount of people wanting Pokémon Snap 2 is unbelievable, was it really that good!?

Anyway, we'll be finding out later I'm pretty eager so I'll just be waiting for the good news regardless, but I want the best news tbh.

The fact that the show will air a day before the 16th anniversary may be why. Maybe he wants to blow the Sweet 16 up with a huge thing

Pokemon Snap was a great game! I highly suggest you give it a try sometime if they decided not to announce a Snap 2.
It was fun seeing the first gen pokemon roaming around in their natural environments.
The only downfall of it is that it's relatively short. I bought it on the Wii's Virtual Console awhile back and beat it/got to Mew in like 2 hours, haha.

So the Japs are officially tucking themselves into bed on the other side of the world at this time! Maybe.

"Junichi Masuda revealed in the Pokémon Centre in Fukuoka that there is to be an upcoming Pikachu event."

This was only at the Pokémon Centre, Pokemon Smash hasn't aired yet and he wouldn't reveal this HUGE SURPRISE at the Pokémon Centre, it will be two separate announcements I'd assume.

I need to try and get excited about Gray just in case they don't announce remakes. :(

I'm anxious. I have like, five Pokemon sites up in different tabs to see which one will make a post about it first, I even have the official site up! I'm like, all jittery. I was planning to take a nap but when I saw Cello say there's only three more hours (which is now two), I caught a second wind and now I can't wait.

Hnnnngh, hurry up and make the announcement! My weak little heart can't take it any longer! D':
