It'll prolly be a town when its Localized XD

The "City" is kinda small to be a "City".

Ho-Oh April 13th, 2012 9:48 PM

It doesn't really look like a city, though. Perhaps in the future... cities have become more popular? I mean I assume now that it's all advanced, everything is going to be technologically better, and bigger populations seem to be the way to go. :x

Xander Olivieri April 13th, 2012 9:49 PM

Even on the map its painfully small. Pallet's map image may have been bigger....and may have had more building too from the basic description.

Jellicent♀ April 13th, 2012 9:56 PM

It's about dang time. I'm a city boy at heart, even though I live in a SMALL town, but i love the big cities of the games. Whether or not this one is big will have to wait to be revealed, but as long as it isn't the three-four home cluster of houses, I'm good.

Yeah, ever since 2010 cities have become popular and become extremely advanced.

C Payne April 13th, 2012 10:04 PM

Hearing that it will have a Pokemon Center and Trainer's school(if I read it right, been a little while since I looked at the info), I'd expect it to be a decent size...As Jellicent said, as long as it is a bit bigger than the average 3 house village, and with the forementioned 'known' additions, it should be a nice change.

Ho-Oh April 13th, 2012 10:08 PM

...oh well, okay, so maybe it can just be that the population has grown. Maybe Musicals attracted everyone to Unova and now they start building larger cities? DON'T KNOW BUT SEEMS LOGICAL.

Archenoth April 13th, 2012 10:19 PM

I wouldn't mind in the player started in the city... As much as people seem to like to stick to a formula for most things, Pokemon has changed things we never thought it would change in the past. And that is often why the new games seem as fresh as they do.

I say go for it! I'll still buy it, and I'll probably love it.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire April 13th, 2012 10:20 PM

The fact that the town has a PC and stores intrigues me more than the label of it as a city. There has to be a reason for why they would do that...my guess is that the city will play a larger role in the games compared to the past starter towns, heck maybe that's why they decided to label it as such, to make it seem important.

Kenshin5 April 13th, 2012 10:30 PM

This could mean a lot of thinks. Maybe they are trying to imply Unova is quite an advanced region and has developed a good amount of isn't dwelling places past the point of being a simple town. They wanted to break from tradition as they have done plenty this gen and start off with a town that has many stuff incorporated that regular starting towns would not.

As far as Nuvema is concerned I could see maybe a foreign professor visiting the lab there post game and giving you the option to choose a set of starters.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire April 13th, 2012 10:38 PM

I had this theory before, in Nuvema you might be able to battle the old character (girl in black and boy in white or vise versa or maybe depending on your own player's gender).

I doubt Unova has advanced much all in these two years tech wise, the use of cities might be a nod to Johto the original sequel region being quite Urban, so they made west Unova urban too...

Either that or Bianca since he can be faced there post main story. This is all depending they go anywhere with here.

Imo Johto wasn't any more urban that Kanto. Sure both had their sparsely populated areas with far out routes. But Kanto had some huge cities like Saffron, Celadon, and Vermillion. If any region showed urban growth it would seem to be Sinnoh.

Turn-it April 13th, 2012 10:52 PM

I honestly think it being a city or town, not much is going to change. It may be a little bit bigger than regular towns but I honestly think the only thing that's different is rather than calling it a town they called it a city! lol

What I'm saying is, don't use the world map artwork we've been given to judge its size.

True dat. I hope it's a big city. I'd be extremely excited if it were. Town, COMPUTER TO SWITCH POKEMON, and whatnot, that'd be awesome. I don't think it'd make that much of an impact on the game, but it being big would make it a bit more fun, imo.

Wheeee a building beside the house! Or wait, is that just the professor's lab? Regardless, it's still quite a big city, somewhat like Rustboro City or Petalburg City maybe, so it's still legit enough to be considered a "city" lol. Also, it's somewhat near Twist Mountain so it's probably somewhere near Mistralton City as well xD

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire April 13th, 2012 11:26 PM

The city might be a small city like Mauville in Hoenn if not big like Saffron, Golden rod, Nimbasa or Opelucid.

Either way it might simply be gimmick...which by the looks of things is working, it has our attention...

World map is usually to scale. If it were small it was usually small. Based from the screenshots from CoroCoro and the new trailer I'll go out on a limb and say there are at most 5 buildings. Rival's house, Your House, Trainer School, Pokemon Center, and one random building.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire April 13th, 2012 11:40 PM

^ That random building might be the prof's lab where we get our starter. So yeah the city is quite small compared to the rest in terms of buildings...much like Mauville city...

blue April 14th, 2012 3:26 AM

I never realised this but like others are saying it does look too small to be classed as a city.

dannyboy601 April 14th, 2012 3:34 AM

Maybe Nuvema Town will only serve as a location you can fly to to quickly access Route 17/18, with only a few notable purposes such as battling Bianca or meeting Professor Juniper to get your Pokédex upgraded.

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ April 14th, 2012 6:47 AM

FINALLY!

I've grown quite tired of the trainer being from some random nowhere town. As one who's had to suffer living in the country for far too long, I cannot begin to tell you how refreshing it will be to begin a Pokemon game in, and have your character be a citizen of, an actual city.

Jellicent♀ April 14th, 2012 7:32 AM

The thought of being able to buy Ultra Balls and deposit or withdraw Pokemon in my hometown alone excites me. I'm convinced, like all other games, your home town is just that, a hometown. It'd be awesome if the region's department store was located in your home city, though. That would just put the icing on the cake for me.

Kinda doubt that, but considering that Black and White's was in the middle of a route? Yeah idk. Perhaps it's a city because it's just large though, and not that it'll have any other features. :(

Bluerang1 April 14th, 2012 7:43 AM

I think it's big enough to be a city from the pictures of Hiougi City I've seen on Serebii.

They're apartments next to the protagonist's house and PokeCenter and Mart. These are both big buildings you see in cities, though the PokeCenter and Mart are also in towns. Also a Trainer School which have always been in cities. If I recall correctly.

Well shoot. :c
Well as long as I can buy an ultra Ball or two from the Poke Mart, I'm good. But I didn't think of the fact that they call it a city because it just reached the minimum capacity of buildings and people.

Xander Olivieri April 14th, 2012 4:45 PM

Watched the video and counted 7 buildings. It was a surprise...but sadly the "City" looks smaller than Lacunosa Town to me.

Well it is only the city you start in, and the first location in the game. I didn't expect anything too huge, and this looks pretty good to me!

I like the fact that we start in a city instead of a town! It just comes to show that GameFreak is starting to put an end to some of the boring repeated things in the game that we always have and expect. It's definitely one of the reasons people are liking what they hear so far, so much.

Man I'm so excited just to be in this city let alone play the whole game. o3o;

antemortem April 14th, 2012 5:10 PM

It's really made no impact on me, honestly. Though, I have thought of the starting trainers as always fitting better if they start in a small town. I see them more of an underdog, someone who wasn't thought of to be great in the world of Pokemon, and even being seen as such, they depart from their small town and go on a year-long journey, or, in our case, a couple of days long, to prove all the doubters wrong and become something more.

Starting off in a city is more like a rich kid leaving and knowing he'll attain greatness because he's rich, lives in a city, etc.

From the looks of the female girl, though, that second theory is all but right...

Did they say what other buildings are going to be in the city other than the Center and school?

Not that I know of, I'm pretty sure most of what was shown was just the rival and protagonist wandering around the place. The home of the protagonist in the city looks sweet though!

Aw, well shoot. I love the protagonist's home. It looks so cute. And am I he only one who got more excited when I saw concrete walkways instead of dirty and grass?

Nope, I'm adoring that as well. I like that they're finally straying off the stereotypical country-side that all Pokemon games seem to... well, always experience, even in the third generation when there was an attempt to add things like that to places like Slateport and Mauville. It didn't work. :I

Slateport and Mauville are amazing, don't hate! SMH RN BE ASHAMED.

I noticed that as well though! It brings out the New York in Unova, especially since it is a city. Cities need to be like that. :P

I'm quite pleased with Hiougi City really. It still screams "home", which I like.

Ho-Oh May 15th, 2012 6:15 AM

Okay so in my timezone, it's still technically the same day, so it's not over a month, and Jake said in general earlier he doesn't care about the revival rule that strictly and the thread Suicune posted it in can't lead to any discussion because it's for new things, while this thread is for the starter city specifically. :(

...anyway, since we now know Aspertia City (as revealed in a press release) is the name of the starting city, how do you guys feel about it? It's interesting that they actually kept that it's a city in English (and do you prefer the other name, Hiougi City?) AND what does it even mean?! ...I haven't yet checked, lol. :x

Mystery Soul May 15th, 2012 6:22 AM

A a fragrant fan made of hinoki cypress tree wood.

^The definition of the city's Jap. name.

So Aspertia may be an allusion to some sort of tree?

Hikamaru May 15th, 2012 6:30 AM

So Hiougi City has been localized as Aspertia City.

Interesting name but still doing the pun on clouds I presume?

At least this is the first hometown for the player that is actually a city.

Can't believe they released the English name this early.

Zephele May 15th, 2012 6:54 AM

Aspertia sounds like a cool name to me, and I feel it fits the names of the others.
According to Bulbapedia, it is indeed a continuation of the cloud theme, this time using the undulatus asperatus cloud.

On starting in a city, it's hard to tell how much of an impact (if any) it'll have until you start playing the game, I suppose. Though I guess it's nice to have a little bit of a change.

Shiny Celebi May 15th, 2012 7:36 AM

Im glad the player character is from a city, such a nice change, even if just because of the look of it. It might not be a huge city, but it's a step up from the little starting towns previously.

Well, chances are it could be part of a tree and part of a cloud. Possibly because the city is found in the woods with a lookout to the actual sky? So basically the name was chosen to reference both, maybe.

XtinaIsMeLuvinWWE May 15th, 2012 8:39 AM

I'm not going to lie, I've always loved the fact that the character comes from this tiny town and makes it in the big wide world, not to mention when people are like "Oh, you're from Pallet Town?" it kind of puts it on the map and makes that place more important :)

Having said that I do think being from the city is a refreshing change and I really like the idea :)

Zephele May 15th, 2012 9:08 AM

I did a little bit of searching, and it turns out that there's a tree with the scientific name of Streblus asper, which the city could also be named after. If that's the case, it's pretty cool how they're able to retain the idea of trees from the Japanese name, and include the theme of clouds, into one name.

Jellicent♀ May 15th, 2012 9:17 AM

Aspertia City?
...<3
I keep falling more and more in love with this game, legit.

^See, the whole, "Oh you from Pallet Town...", thing has gotten a little...bland. But now, it's like, "Oh, you're from Aspertia City?!" Like, it's a city. Idk, it just has more of a status, to me.

Satoshi Ookami May 15th, 2012 9:17 AM

I still think American GF will translate it as Town =D

blue May 15th, 2012 9:26 AM

I like the fact that it's more populated and... well bigger, it's more of a cultural city to be in and from the images it looks great.

Daydream May 15th, 2012 9:32 AM

^ The official translation is city. It was on the US website, I believe.

Asper also means rough or uneven. So that could have something to do with a city being rougher than a town? I think the cloud/tree is more likely. I'm happy we get to start from a city, I just hope that there's more of a reason to come back to it. Otherwise, I dunno. It's just a cool gimmick.

mikey May 15th, 2012 10:38 AM

I like the fact of starting in a city. Theres more to do and its a nice fresh change from starting in a quiet town.

Aquarius1997 May 15th, 2012 1:31 PM

I actually like the idea

Its about time we got a STARTER CITY i hope they have a good feature in this city so i can ACTUALLY revisit it

Zayphora May 15th, 2012 4:42 PM

Asperita is such a nice name. I like that it's a city, maybe it will actually have a Poke Center now....

droomph May 16th, 2012 11:46 AM

Well, this is a sequel, so they might just change things up a bit because this isn't square one anymore, and it's CONTINUING the story.

There is a Center, now! Which makes me very excited. c:
And I pretty much agree with droomph. This isn't some humble little town anymore in a humble little region. Things have happened, people have moved on, this place needs to be juiced up a bit, and what better way to do that than with the characters beginning in a city?

Jellicent♀ May 16th, 2012 3:27 PM

^Exactly! Accept it as a city! It's going to be translated into a city. It has all of the requirements of being a city. It is indeed a city. Which I don't understand why everyone is so angry about that. D:
Each game is about changing something in the Pokemon world, and one of those chains this time around is the starting place of your character is a city. Why is that so horrible? I find it amazing that I can finally trade out one of my Pokemon for my flier after I beat the E4 right in my hometown, as opposed to fighting off hundreds of Patrats just to get to Accumula and then to just fly out of there as well. Plus the option of getting Full Restores and Ultra Balls from the Center near your home is pretty boss, too.

Greenbeans May 16th, 2012 3:40 PM

thats quite interresting and it will stir up a lot of conversation, i like the concept of starting in a city.
I am a bit iffy on it but im looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

Kenmoor May 16th, 2012 7:00 PM

City people! The bright lights, the busy hustle! No hillbillies! (No offense rural people) Every time I started up my a game I expected a Miltank to leap at my sprite. Or the random Zigzagoon to ambush us. Poor Prof.Birch...
Anyways... Asperita city (that's the name, right?) seems like nice place to start. No enclosing forests or rabid Pokemon in sight, right? Hopefully, this city will have some new, unique features as Aquarius1997 said. Its our hometown! homecity! We need a reason to visit it! And don't give me the whole "I wanna see mom!" reason. Our homecity is supposed to be awesome. At the very least a Game Corner/Casino should be in the City. Or a necessary building. Like a Pokemon Center! (Kudos to Jellicent♀ and Zayphora)
Maybe the Professor's Lab will look like an actual Lab as opposed to the large, imposing building. I haven't seen the artwork for our house, yet. It better be an epic crib that I would want to pointlessly walk around in.

I like your thinking and i agree completely, with the new city coming up its sure to have something facinating to catch everybodys eye

Xander Olivieri May 16th, 2012 8:08 PM

Didn't they say that the hometown only had the Trainer School and a Pokemon Center? I don't think there is anything else in the city. Its pretty small when they showed it in the previews. Lancousa Town is larger than it from what I've seen.

vaporeon7 May 17th, 2012 1:23 AM

I don't mind the idea of starting in Asperita City. I'm just glad I'll be able to beat the Pokémon League with a Pokémon without fly without having to run to the next town/city (usually finding some annoying wild Pokémon along the way) to use the PC.

Mr Cat Dog May 17th, 2012 5:22 AM

People were seriously getting their knickers in a twist over starting in a town or a city? Jeez. Lighten up... It's certainly a nice change, I'll give it that, and the added benefit of more stuff to - hopefully - do in the beginning is also a plus.
