Final Fantasy 12

Is anyone going to buy ff12?
I heard its like FF tactics but with airships and stuff. Kinda looks like tactics advance blended with Final Fantasy 11 online feel get wat i mean?
Since its coming out October 1st ill think ill get this and Kingdom Hearts 2 since that comes out in September 14.

WolfWood January 13th, 2005 2:52 PM

I dont think it's like Tactics people are wanting a a turn based one and I hope it's a turned based FF if not I won be getting it.

bgt January 13th, 2005 2:56 PM

Whats wrong with Real-Time? Anyways, whats the story behind FF XII and eta for release?

Lucifer. January 13th, 2005 2:59 PM

It's not like Tactics at all. It borrows concepts and races from Tactics Advence and that's about it.

Part of me looks at this game and expects it to be the greatest thing the PS2's ever seen, but the other half is skeptical over some of the drastic changes made to fundamental Final Fantasy staples.

The removal of random battles is obviously positive in many ways, but it also removes the element of surprise when confronting a new/rare enemy with it. The battle system also gears towards a more real-time system (basically implemented in order to lure more "omg turn-based battles are soooo lame" players to the series), which I'm not liking. But worst of all, is the fact that you can only ever control one character during battles, with the other 2 being fuelled by the AI. All 3 systems stacked together just make for a combat system that isn't very "Final Fantasy"-ish anymore.

In terms of storyline and setting, everything looks great. Square seem to have gone for a "FFIX meets FFX" style, which is fine by me. I'm not particularly liking any of the playable characters though. The Viera woman looks interesting, but everyone else is just too plain in their design. They should throw a Nu Mou in there to add a bit of variety, or at least some sort of oddball character in the style of Cait Sith or Quina. Hopefully there's more characters to discover past the ones revealed up to now.

Bottom line though: I'd buy a tin of dog food if it had a Final Fantasy label on it, so either way it doesn't matter. XD

Elite Trainer Raven January 14th, 2005 7:51 AM

I've sadly lost faith with the main story single player Final Fantasy games after X was released. It seems like (with the exception of IX), the FF series tried catering to a certain audience. I miss the good ol' days where the old FF games were targeted to everyone and had everything you could ask for in it (hence why I love IX). Nowadays, FF seems to be targeted more to the hysterical fan-girl base. How so? Take a look at the progress of every male lead and the villains of the PlayStation FF games and compare them to those that were on the NES and SNES. We've got a silent, rogue soldier (Cloud), an angst-filled, lone-wolf goth boy (Squall), a shapely male that could easily pass off as a woman as he wears makeup and a thong (Kuja), and a pretty boy, sports player (Tidus). Seems to cater more to the ladies. Now we have FFXII's main hero. And what have we here? A pretty boy that LOOKS like a girl. What the hell happened here?

When did all the guys stop being guys in the FF series? It seemed like Zidane was the last of the normal guys (well, aside form having a monkey tail and having quite a past history..). And don't get me wrong, it's not just the girls either. X-2 started catering towards the guys as well.

It's not the designs either. I've been turned off by the story and gameplay by the recent FF games. FFVII is really not my cup of tea. It tried being a successor of VI. Newsflash, Kefka > Sephiroth. :\ Then we have VIII. Junction pretty much killed it for me. Though the story wasn't too bad, the battling system was just awful. Then came X. So..I'm playing as a dream dude that's dreaming? Not to mention..he spends the entire game *****ing and moaning about how his daddy didn't love him and tried taking his mommy away from him. Oh yeah, can't forget the oh so special final boss, Yu Yevon. What a waste that was. A friggen' GLOWING BALL that took over the bodies of my summons in the end which resorted me to having to kill 'em all off was my final boss. What a load of crap. I'm not gonna even get into X-2. FF should NEVER have any sequels or else it defeats the purpose of it being the Final fantasy.

So after all that, the answer is no. >_>

Lucifer. January 14th, 2005 8:22 AM

What was so terrible about VIII's battle system? With the exception of X-2 it's the fastest-flowing in the entire series. ATB fills quickly, attacks are executed quickly, graphics are sharp (even today), menus are simple and text/numbers don't dominate the screen like they did in past games.

Your summary of FFX is inaccurate. Tidus was never dreaming, his father did love him and never tried to take his mum away from him. And if you want to take things a step further he never really spent the whole game whining about anything. A few major scenes were devoted to the hatred of his father, and with good reason - it was a big part of the storyline. It'd be like removing the conflict between Cloud and Sephiroth in FFVII.

[Le spoiler]

The final scenes at the end of the game between Tidus and Jecht are fantastic, and really show-off Tidus' conflicting feelings over his dad.

[/Le spoiler]

If you compare every game from VII upwards to the older games, there's a huge difference in quality (FFVI to a lesser extent). Cleaner menus, more in-depth storylines, less silliness (hello Final Fantasy IV's pirouetting cast members) etc etc.

I'm all for classic games, and even admit myself that modern technology/3D has ruined many a series (Sonic, Donkey Kong), but Final Fantasy isn't one of them.

Brittany January 14th, 2005 9:06 AM

The only simularities with Tactics/Tactics advance, is that it takes place in the same world, and that judges(TA) will have a role in it. I wouldn't be suprised if they had appearances of a character from the other games, but it would probably be a side-mission type thing =/
(Does anyone remember using Cloud in Final Fantasy Tactics after using the time machine thingy thing? :P)

I disagree with Elite Trainer Raven though, those males appearances don't really affect the game IMO. And their attitudes and little secrets spiced up the story. Of course, you could just ignore their appearance, attitude, and secrets, and the story could still flow nicely, and keep that 'save the world' theme.
That's just what I think though.

SS4Gotenks January 14th, 2005 2:56 PM

Hmm ok now its my time to criticize the FF series hehehe!

FF 1&2 bites for having boring story

FF3&6 were the same games i think? The Terra theme was bad.

FF 4&5 were still boring.

FF 7 was pretty cool since the graphics got better from 1-6. It also had a good story of Cloud and his lost memory. I loved 7's limit breaks like Cloud's Omnislash that was cool. And the KOTR summon was awesome too. Music was good too. Sephiroth kinda looked ugly as an octopus angel. Plus much weaker than Kefka of course.
The Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts was much stronger than the bizarro sephiroth in FF7.

FF8 sux big time except for the cutscenes. FF8 you had to literally hunt down each summon and go thru their maze...
plus limit break system was dum I literally attacked my own player Zack to do his limit break hahaha!
Junction system took too much time too. And the last boss was a ugly assed witch monster thingy and it was huugee. I wouldn't wanna marry a 20 ft story high giant woman. Music was pretty good only for laguna parts. Last boss was kinda cool at the fact your fighting squall's griever summon.

FF9 was a pretty good game because of the cutscenes with Bahamut and the music was pretty good. I personally like Kuja's theme and the Terra theme. I think Zack was supposed to be Chibi Goku from the dragonball series because he had a tale and all his weapons were a pole! Last boss sucked too! Death was ugly and gay looking besides pretty weak. When i first played this game I thought Kuja was a hot babe wearing a thong, but ewww he was a guy and his thong was really his monkey tail wrapped around his butt.

FFX was pretty okay with the realism graphics gosh Tidus looked soo cool with his shiny blonde hair. Bahamut Aeon was awesome. Music was pretty good.
Sphere leveling system was bad. and Last boss suked too. You fight a tiny bug? I'd rather fight Sin himself than fight all my aeons turned evil plus a little bug. Man way to kill a happy ending with the hero dying.... So sadd i cried the first time...

FFX-2 Was like for old guys pleasure or something? Like yuna shows cleavage and Rikku too with her bikini on...Paine was the only one properly dressed. I liked the boss in this one a lottt!. Vegnagun is awesome but really weakkkk!! I like the Shuyin story alot. I didn't like the dress changing time bc it takes like 5 mins just to change to one dress. Sidequests were really boringgg. Music was pretty good too. I just didn't like the real emotion song.

FFX1 was a boring online game which was amusing at first but when the expansion came out it kinda got boring. It's very fun to kill your own team mates with Blizzaga!!.

How come the only cutscenes where people kiss are FF8(at end) and FFX(in macalania)? I understand that FF9 is like 15 yr olds, and FF7 was oldest but had a love triangle gone wrong and FFX1 was brother and sister so i dont wanna think about it.

Lucifer. January 14th, 2005 3:13 PM

3 and 6 aren't the same game. Final Fantasies 4 and 6 were re-numbered for their US releases to avoid confusion, but in the end it's just ended up causing it anyway.

4 was the second game to get a US release, so it was chucked on the shelves as FF2. 6 was the third, so it became 3. Then 7 was released under it's original number regardless, causing thousands of fans to wave their "Wtf" flags high in confusion.

In Japan and Europe the games have never been known as any other numbers but their originals.

PS: You don't seem very up-to-date on your FF games. Long, opinionated paragraphs on the newer games, but just a couple of words here and there for FF1-6. Eh? Eh? :chinese:

Triumphant Chaos January 14th, 2005 5:56 PM

I seem to be one of the only people around who's looking forward to FFXII. Though that could be because I don't compare the games to each other, and I have a super over obsession with Final Fantasy. Myself, I haven't been able to play very much of any games from 1-6, and I've never touched the Tactics versions, nor have I been able to play the more recent release for Nintendo, Crystal Chronicles.

I started buying them at VIII, (skipped VII, still searching stores for it >.>) and found it to be very well done. However, I don't only look at the outer appearance of the game. I buy games like Final Fantasy because I know that there will be an indepth storyline that will be enjoyable the full way through the game. And because of this, I was able to get most of the way through VIII. Of course, then I got stuck on the Sorceress Adel, and still haven't gotten past that point.

Then there was FFIX, another one I didn't finish because I saw the end when I was at a friends place. Again, the game had an incredible storyline, and a fine dash of character mystery to boost it.

FFX was the first Final Fantasy I managed to finish (a cause for me to celebrate). My personal feelings about this game changed as I played through it. At first, I thoguht the Sphere Grid system was weird, because it was alien to me. I couldn't get used to the fact that the characters were never going to level. Finally though, I became used to it, and I hold the feeling that it was one of the better parts of the game, because you could better customize your characters once you got further along.

Now, having only got FFX-2 for Christmas, I'm only 50% finished. However, I was looking forward to this game because FFX leaves you hanging at the end. You really aren't sure exactly what happened. While it was good for those who don't care about character development, for those of us who do - such as myself - a sequel was an amazing concept. (And a money making scheme, but who cares?) Now, as for the battle system in this game - At first I was overwhelmed by the speed of the ATB, but I finally got used to it, and am completely thrilled with it now. I also love the idea of the job transitions. With these, you can easily take over the advantage in any battle, because you have many choice, especially once you've collected a variety of dress-spheres. Of course, you have to find them first. >.>

I didn't, and can't, touch on FFXI simply because I'm not allowed to buy it. My parents don't want to pay for the monthly fees, and I don't have a job, so I can't pay for them myself... Eh. Maybe one day...

Anyway, I hope that FFXII will live up to my expectations (which I'm sure that it will) and I really don't have many doubts because I can adapt well... Usually.

Pogiforce-14 January 14th, 2005 6:04 PM

Haven't heard much of this game, but I do know that the more rescent FF games haven't been a letdown. FFX2 has been one of my favorite PS2 games, as a matter of fact. hopefully this new game will live up to expectations.

rins January 15th, 2005 2:53 AM

When is this game coming out in the states? I'll prolly just get the japanese release since i live here (but japanese games cost so much when they come out O_O... for instance, Dragon Quest VIII came out at a retail of around 80$ and i still see Kingdom Hearts for around $60...).

Is this a bash on the FF series? Or something?

I personally am not ashamed to admit I like the FF series, and probably would by a tin of dog food if it had FF written on it. But I am also slowly beginning to dislike this new direction square ("enix") is taking. I hated the fact that they started doing direct sequels, it threw off the whole balance of each individual world, and it kind of made FFX seem like a less important game, IMO. also, i USED to be able to justify it whenever people asked me that really stupid question "how come they're called FINAL fantasy if there's ten of them?" by saying that, well, each world is a separate world almost on the brink of destruction and without the help of the certain hereos of each game, it would certainly be the world's final fantasy. now with all this X-2 and Advent Children crap it's all messed up. I played X-2 a little and enjoyed it, but in my mind it degraded the quality of X as a story and game. Same with advent children, i will probably see it, but FFVII was a brilliant game in my mind, and giving it a definite ending defeats the whole purpose of FFVII's open ending.
FFXI just totally made everything worse. I dont like online RPGs, and i dont think most FF fans are, in general, good at online rpgs. Im sure that over half of FFXI's base are simply FF fans who had to get the game cause of the title, making it a clunky and unfriendly world to work in. and it really messed up the nice, complete, plots of all the other self-contained FF games. Not that FFXI isnt a bad game, just i wish that they had called it FF online or something better...

Which brings me to FFXII. why-oh-why does it have to have characters from FFTA? Was the world of FFTA so incredibly fantastic that it had to spread to the FF main series? I liked FFTA, but not enough that I would think "man, i need me some MORE hot, half-naked viera chicks!!!" I love the imagination of each FF games world, and FFXII loaning its world from FFTA is just boring. Couldnt they have created a new world? The concept art looks nice and all, but the fact that they took stuff from FFTA just irks me.
About the battle system- ive heard its a lot like that of an online rpg. Aka- select a command like attack and you character will just keep doing the attack. Which seems reeeeeally boring. I had enough of that with FFXI. if i wanted boring battle systems, i would play ragnarok online or something.

BUT I do have a little faith in squaresoft, and they've managed to impress me at times when i truly doubted them, so I could end up eating my words. There may still be a wonderful and imaginative plot, and the battle system might be better than my concept of it now. But anyway time will tell, and we'll see.

On another note- what the heck is with this hero? He sure is cute and being half naked helps (finally the GUYS are as scantilly clad as the girls are), but does he not bear a striking resemblance to tidus...? cant they come up with a more interesting look for a main character, or what? :tired:

Lucifer. January 15th, 2005 3:21 AM

Well as far as I know FFXII was in development before FFTA, so chances are the two games were both responsible for "creating" those races. I think it's a good idea myself. The FFTA races are class, and it'd be cool if they include some actual characters like Babus and Ezel in it as well.

I think FFXII is set to be the game FFTA's dream world is based on. Whenever "Final Fantasy" is mentioned in Tactics Advance, they're actually referring to FFXII. Hence, why the world where they're sent is called Ivalice and contains FFXII races. Chances are that's where the similarities end though.

rins January 15th, 2005 3:48 AM

I just dont like FFs that are directly connected. There are some games, like Suikoden, that are good to be directly connected with the sequels. But games like Xeno and FF games... it just annoys me when they are connected (besides the in game jokes and all). FFXII could have benefited fine with a world of its own, and FFTA could have been a stand alone world as well. There just seems to be no reason to connect these worlds to me.

SS4Gotenks January 15th, 2005 2:47 PM

I liked the cutscenes the most from the games I remember in X they had like 5 to 10 min cutscenes and every time I had to go to the bathroom I had to hold it in not to miss it. Sometimes it really got burning hot down there.

winnie January 15th, 2005 5:23 PM

well i got most of the final fantasy games except the one's released in japan only and FFXi as it was online. Though FFXii sounds good to me, i might get when it comes out in the UK though that might take a while.

WolfWood January 15th, 2005 8:18 PM

I cant wait till FF XII is released the graphics look to be the best yet on the PS2.

SBaby January 16th, 2005 6:06 PM

FF12, first of all, is NOT a Tactics game. It simply takes place in a futuristic Ivalice. That's all.

It uses an ATB system, from what I've heard and Summons are supposed to be making a triumphant return. Other than that, I don't know much about the story.

WolfWood January 16th, 2005 8:17 PM

Using a ATB battle system looks like the battles may look like what they did in Kingdom Hearts.

is there any FF game that doesn't have summons?

Lucifer. January 17th, 2005 4:04 AM

Final Fantasy 1 + 2 are the only main-series games without summon monsters.

SS4Gotenks January 27th, 2005 5:33 AM

Im not sure but in FFX-2 you couldn't summon anything because you didn't have a summoner dressphere I wish they had though. Also in FF1&2 in the gba and snes and PS1 games they didn't have.

Pokemon Master #1 January 27th, 2005 12:20 PM
