Did you ever play the original green?
So I jsut found my old school Green version from back in the day. I was just curious if anyone else played this one. I know it is only in japanese but curious.
Never have. :( I want to though!! I love old games and I love Green sprites. They're so ugly they're fabulous. Plus I'm OCD about my main game collection and without Green, I feel really incomplete.

I have most of the main gen games, in English. I have Gold in Japanese, and I plan on getting one of each copy all the main series games in each English/Japanese, possibly moving on to European versions afterwards. |
I have! My cousin had green. I wish I had it. I think he gave it away D:
I've only ever played the ROM version, and I think its awesome that you actually have the cartridge. But something that would also be super cool, is if an American actually owned a rare copy of the Japanese Blue Version.
I believe I played a ROM of the original Green that was stuffed in a fake cartridge that I bought on holiday in Spain. It definitely had a Yellow ROM (which I played before buying the real thing a few months later) but I'm pretty sure it had a Green one as well. Suffice to say, I can't really remember anything of it, unfortunately.
I've only played a ROM of Pokémon Green before. I did it for a Venusaur solo challenge and I finished it in a school day. It was really confusing with all the translations and character limitations.
I once played a weirdly-translated rom of it, but I stopped in Viridian Forest :|
I did see a Green cartridge for sale at an anime convention a few weeks ago. I would've bought it, but it was $30, so.. |
Nope never. Tbh I didn't even know Green existed until I was like..10. But I love all the Green sprites and I'd love to play it.
Now that the controversy with Sydian has been cleared :D :
If you want to try out Pokémon Green in English, just go here: http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/876/ Note: This is a patch for a ROM of Pokémon Red, it's the same link I posted before. You have to apply the .ips file contained in the zip to a clean Pokémon Red ROM, which you have to get somewhere else. To do so use "Lunar IPS" for example. |

I just played a japanese rom and I beat it awhile back. Nothing to special about it, other than the sprites.
I haven't yet. Someday I plan to even if I won't actually understand the Japanese.
I did but I stopped because I do not know japanese nor I plan to learn soon.
Green was my first ever Pokemon game. There are many memories in it. XD I never knew that there was a 'new green' and 'old school green'. I only knew of the first Japanese one until now.
I don't see why I'd play a majorly text based game I can't even read.
I didnt even know they made an actual green i was like 8 when they came out and all i remember was yellow red and blue
Quote:
Yeah I've got Green, it's fun because it's so terrible! It's quite endearing, and some of the sprites are just shocking... |
Only the rom, with the terrible translation. Recently I started playing the Japanese one.
I was interested in playing it. However, I never truly pursued finding any means of being able to play it. Yellow was amazing enough to not really care enough to try out the Japanese's third installment.
Green is good to own for pride and bragging rights only. Alot of the pokemon you can find in the international blue/red versions have to be unlocked through trading in green, such as Jinx. There's slight alterations in 2 maps, but that's a localization issue, not a difference in color as well as a few extra glitches.
I think I'm happy with my pokemon yellow. Although I've never played pokemon green.
Yes. Confusing but awesome all at once.
I used the ROM to do the Dokokashira Door glitch, but I wish I had the real thing. \nerd
I played maybe up to Pewter City, and just couldn't do it anymore. The sprites were horrendous to me, and everything was so poorly translated..it may have just been the version I downloaded. I'm gonna try out the above linked LIPS version.
Yes, I bought it on eBay about 8 years ago. (Wow, that long ago).
It's pretty much the same game with different sprites and Pokemon. However, I glitched it by trading to an Australian version after getting to 6th gym. Haven't touch it since then. \: |
I recently bought a copy of green, replaced the battery and now I am ready to catch em all.
No.
Have seen game carts labelled as Pokemon Green and found it strange that the cartridge was similar to the blacks of GB Color titles. |
Bought a boxed version, still waiting for a battery because the one in the Green is dead.
I also have a fake Green, but it won't load for some reason. |
Yes, I've played it on somebody's Gameboy Colour years ago but I don't personally own it. Plus it's the only mainstream game I don't own.
No I haven't but I always wanted to lol. There was a rather funny hack made called engrish green. It was a literal translation of the script from green into english. Needless to say it was very bad.
I have only played the "English" ROM long time ago. My English was weak back then so I didn't have any problems with the bad translation. Maybe I'll replay it one of these days. I hope that the translation is so bad it's funny and not just bad.
Yes I have actually. Well a ROM of it but meh. xP I've also played the poorly translated ROM as well. xD I was supposed to get a copy of the game, along with every other first gen game in Japanese, but the guy on Ebay never shipped them off... >.>
nope, I only have Red and Yellow
I've played more of Green than any other Gen 1 game. I'm at Victory Road now. Been there for over a year. Should probably pick it back up sometime.
I have! For the Ultimate Solo challenge actually. It was frustrating to be unable to read. Overall, it was just like Red and Blue, although I encountered a lot more glitches than I think I should have. Plus I couldn't get Missingno to appear. *shrugs*
I don't think I could get into it if I couldn't read stuff D: I know the story and stuff, but y'know, I'd still like to be able to read. And when a Pokémon wanted to learn a new move and stuff I wouldn't know which move it was without the aid of Bulbapedia or something... so I don't think I'll ever play it.
I did, on a cartridge imported from Japan since 2004. Bad news though, it broke when my baby brother spilled his milk on it. Frustrating to read though, with the Japanese characters and such.
Why would I play green when there is a English version of it? In fact, I don't have any kanto games in my possession, although I used to have a copy of one of them several years ago.
I'm hunting down for a copy of a old gen 1 game! |
I own it. I bought it off Ebay about 4 years ago now (wow I can't believe it's been that long). I only got to the 4th gym before I quit because playing in Japanese became too difficult.
Did anyone look up "Lavender Town Syndrome"? Apparently the high pitch notes and stuff from the Lavender Town music from the original Japanse version of Green caused hearing problems and swelling of the brain of young children, causing potential deaths. They apparently changed the music for UK and other releases of the colour games.

That's an old rumor/creepypasta and not true. |
one cousin of my friend have a original japanese green xD
Yep, bought in on eBay 1,5 year ago. Thunderbolt animation still gives me nightmares xD
I never got a chance to play it, but was confused as when I was going to buy it it was in pure Japanese. I wanted to try and play Bulbasaur for the first time so I just restarted blue version to save some hassle of trying to find a real green version.
I bought Pokemon green and been playing it recently. I like it, I actually find it more of a challenge compared to the english counterparts because I don't know the Japanese language, I'm trying to figure out which moves are which. I actually like some of the green sprites more than some of the blue/red/yellow. They're not the best but they're fabulous.
Nope, never. Not sure if I'd want to, either, given it's only in Japanese, which I can't read. D=
I have played it but only more recently and not when it was new. I purchased a copy of it on amazon for $30 back in February, not sure if i over paid lol. Anyway it was quite easy to play even being in another language, when you have played the american equivalents dozens of times its hard not to know whats going on lol. I have to say i really loved the slight differences like pokemon location in the wild and the different floor plan in the Unknown Dungeon. Also not sure if anyone has tried but if you haven't dont... do not try to trade between the Japanese cartridge and the american ones, it will corrupt your save files... lesson learned!
After completing the game i was pleased enough to the point where i also purchased a copy or Japanese Yellow but sadly i haven't played that one very far and its collecting dust on the game shelf. I do intend to get it off eventually though and play it one time through at least. |
Nope, I never did. I can't see myself playing a game with a language I can't comprehend.
I might as well try the patched version, but I'm a little irked by the graphics... |
Yeah, I own a copy.
Got to the fourth gym, got the badge, then I decided to restart because I wanted to play Green with Bulbasaur, Blue with Squirtle and Red with Charmander. Never got around to actually doing it, so it's sitting there, not collecting dust since I take good care of it. Quote:

Gotta click on version number to download patches on Romhacking.net btw. |
Yes and No, I've got it somewhere. It's played about half way through but that was when I was like 9 and I didn't know you could get it in English! So I gave it up and played Red..
I personally love the sprites in Green. I have both Green and Yellow version in Japanese, but Green definitely has to be my favorite. The Japanese is a little annoying since I don't read Japanese, but anything is better than that god awful translation.
I had the cartridge before. But it was bootleg :( I've downloaded the English version of the ROM and I quit playing it because the sprites were ugly and the English was horrible...
I played it but turned volume down at lavendar town, you know, since the music supposedly can kill you.
EDIT: This is my first post in ages, but I'm back now that the fire of pokemon in my heart has been re lit by my recent playing of pokemon Blue. |
o my god!!! IT DOES EXIST! I AM JELLY
I bought the cart from Ebay back in March, got all the way to Fuschia before school bogged me down (I had to keep track of the items in my pack with my iphone lol). Just picked it back up two days ago and finished it last night :P Its funny, despite how often the sprites are panned, a good number of the sprites are actually better/closer to their art than their Blue compatriots, lol....though many aren't XD
Nope but I could always download for my gbc emulator for android
I played it.
But it was kinda boring because i can't understand japanese :P |
There's a Pokemon Green...and peoples played it before?!?! ERRR...That makes me green with envy.
Naaah, I've actually heard of this game, but...I never played it before. |
I didn't actually learn of this game's existence until like a couple years ago, and by that time, I didn't really ever feel the need to backtrack.
Don't forget that Japanese Red Version was similar to Green Version, so why do peolple always just say "Green Version"?
Quote:
Not false.
But a lot of peole forget it. |
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. I played the ROM version, but no - not on the GBC. Love is the Law, Love under Will. |
I played both (green and red) I found them on a flea market of the japanese school not too far from where I live so I bought them :) I actually think some sprites were better than the later sprites
I never even knew of its existence until I started joining Pokemon communities online... back in 2006.
So no, I haven't. It's too old and too Japanese for me. I have had a hard time going back to RBY ever since FR/LG came out. It's just hard on my eyes... |
I have the actually cartridge
It was my older brothers, but i kept keeping on untill he gave it to me. Can't read japanese though... Lol... I can just tell what the words say, because I've played Kanto games repeatedly. |
Nope, Green was never released here, and I've never bothered getting a Japanese game, simply because I've never been as dedicated a fan of Pokemon as some are. I don't think I'd really want it anyways though, since it appears to be quite buggy compared to the other two, and it's essentially the same, so I wouldn't really gain anything out of it, other than adding it to the collection of my currently one remaining Pokemon game ;(
What exactly are the differences in green? Just different sprites or are there gameplay changes?
Quote:
Aside from about 10 minutes worth of playing on a badly-translated ROM, I never played Pokemon Green. And as far as I can recall, there weren't too many differences between the originals and the English Red/Blue besides some different sprites, bug fixes and other minor changes, so I didn't bother trying to play through the whole thing.
Nope, I never did as it wasn't released where I am.
In fact, I never played any Gen 1 games for that matter. |
I never played green version. I havent even played red or blue.
Yeah, I own a Green Version. Never really did much with it though. It's fun to play on my super gameboy or Jap pokemon stadiums, since I can see all the weird sprites in color.
No I never played the original actual copy of it, but I have played it on an emulator. I know how bad the graphics are, so I don't want to say to myself that I actually want to play it on a GBA or GBC.
:t354:TG |
I own both the Japanese Green and Japanese Red versions.
I have Green because my family used to live in Japan, but we moved to the US in 2001 (not worth mentioning as much, but my brother owns a Japanese Silver version that no longer saves, along with a Japanese version of that Pokemon Pinball game with the rumble thingy). I have Red because I won it on eBay several months ago. It came with the box, instruction manual (containing REALLY OLD artwork that looks awesome - did you guys know that the sprites in the Japanese Red/Green versions that everyone thinks looks horrible are actually based off of the VERY FIRST Sugimori art of these Pokemon? They're different from the slightly newer Sugimori art that they started using in 1998 with the Japanese Blue version and the English Red/Blue releases), and most importantly, it came with a huge poster of artwork depicting the entire Kanto region, labeled with it's Japanese names and all. It's pretty awesome. |

No I've never played the original Green Version before but I would like to have a copy for my collection even if I don't play it.
I'm playing the ROM right now, but I've been looking at getting a cartridge with my after-Christmas money.
It's fun to see how well I know the game without being able to read it :D |
Nope, I never had, aside from its remake. I was too young to know that the original Green version existed.
No, I didn't played the Original Green, not even on Emulators.
Someone mentioned about Green, when I was 10. I thought it was some sort of hoax, so I didn't think that the game existed. I should play it and see how it looks.
Green was one of the first ones I actually played on my own.
To be entirely honest, I only knew what to do because of my Yellow copy, haha! I still have my physical cartridge, but without the box. And I continue on my search at pawn-shops & flea markets to find one in the original box! |
Never had...
But I still want to buy it :D It is a freaking good game (on an Emulator, though) |
I've never even seen a Green cartridge before. Or the box art haha.
I haven't played the Japanese Green and I don't want to, since it's basically a glitchier version of the international Blue.
I do understand the appeal, it just doesn't appeal to me. |
I played Green not too long ago. It is actually pretty funny to see how terrible the sprites look in my opinion. I think it's a nice change from RBY.
I've played it on an emulator before, but I've never actually had the game. It's kinda depressing when you look at just how bad some of the sprites were.
i only played it once my cousin had an original green and it was nice but i could not get the words and texts in it xD
I remember playing Green in an Emulator but i didn't really get to far in it because it was in Japanese and i got frustrated not understanding a single word of it.
No I don't understand Japanese so I didn't play it, though I do want to.
I imagine that it's a good game, but I have never played it though.
No, I've never played any of the Japanese Pokemon games. I didn't know anyone from Japan (who had the game, could get me the copy, could translate, etc.) when the Japanese Red and Green came out, didn't know how to order games from Japan, and didn't know Japanese, so there wasn't much incentive. I've seen videos and screenshots of Green since then, and have read a fair amount about it, but I've never played it myself. I did have an RBY guide that included pictures of some of the Green sprites for some reason, though.
Nope. I don't even think I ever saw the game cartridge in real life neither lol. And I don't even understand japanese too :C
Yes, I did.
My Japanese friend sent his to where I was along with his Gameboy for a while. |
I ocassionaly look at the ebay and consider purchasing a copy of Green for completionist sakes. But then I would feel obligated to start purchasing all the japanese versions also.
I found my copy with the Japanese kids I babysat. They told me I could have it. BEST KIDS EVER~!
I've never played Green, nor have I ever seen the cartridge/boxart IRL. It'd be interesting to play, although it is probably the exact same game as the English Red/Blue. The only Japanese Pokemon games I've come to play was Platinum, which was interesting, to say the least, because I don't understand the language. @[email protected]
I have a physical copy of Green in Japanese. It's nothing special, it's literally like Blue in English other than some graphic differences. In Japanese Blue is the 'different' game. Blue in Japan was like Crystal, Emerald or Platinum in the later generations. Yellow (Pikachu is its title in Japanese, no Yellow to be found there) Yellow also was color enhanced compared to its Japanese counterpart. In the Japanese version the overworld was Yellow based as was Red being red based, Blue being blue based and Green being well, green based. Basically what happened when the games first came to America was, they took the sprites and translated script from the Japanese Blue. Not sure why they didn't just release Red and Green, then Blue, then Yellow here. As kids we would've been happy with 4 Kanto games over 3. There seems to be mystery surrounding Green; but, it's not anything special. It's more or less what we got with Blue.
Basically what Chaos Rush was saying too. |
Yes. In fact pokemon green was my first video game ever. Surprisingly my copy is the 2nd copy ever created. When I was a kid I tried playing it, but could understand anything so I went and bought red. Then 10 years later in 2006 I played it for the first time technically.
