No, I think if I were to make a game it would ruin the allure of playing them. I understand it'd be a really rewarding creative process, but I think getting involved with the technical side of things would just kill the magic for me.

I have actually dabbled in game making myself on an extremely noob lvl. I once made a side scroller platformer. Was pretty awful.

I would love to work in the video game industry though, I think it would be such a fun environment to be working in and basically everyone you work with would have AT LEAST one thing in common with you, their love of video games.

ACTUALLY I JUST WANTED TO MAKE ONE SO WE COULD ALL ENJOY GAMING TOGETHER! NO ADVERTISING INTENDED.

Just so happened that in the rules I needed to clarify that there is an option to go somewhere for Online Gaming. ;D

Actually yes.
I graduated from a Games Technology course, so I know how to make games in a sense. I am currently working on a couple of different ideas but nothing like AAA games; more indie.

Cherrim May 4th, 2012 12:09 PM

I'm slightly interested in making games myself, but I think all I'll be qualified to do if I ever get out of university is the programming aspect whereas if I ever made a game, I think I'd have a lot more fun in the design process rather than bringing other peoples' ideas to life.

But I don't have any original ideas of my own anyway so I've never bothered trying to look into game dev. :(

Captain Fabio May 4th, 2012 12:14 PM

Why don't you start an individual project?

It is all about brain storming. I have a couple of half individual, unique ideas but still, even having something is good.

Alice May 4th, 2012 12:18 PM

Heck, if you want, you can make a fangame of mario or zelda, or w/e. You won't have to do any custom art or music if you do.

Or just have crappy graphics like my games. lol

Your most crowning gaming achievement, online or offline.

Beating Nocturne. It's SO EASY to die in it, even on Normal (because thankfully there's no Easy mode so you're not allowed to be a wimp) if you mess up even ONCE. A single missed or ineffective attack can forfeit the turn for your entire team, then you get the crap kicked out of you when your opponents' turn comes. And I'm not getting started on the boss fights, those may as well be mentally scarring at times.

Cherrim May 4th, 2012 1:59 PM

Your most crowning gaming achievement, online or offline.

Offline: Either completing KH2:FM or Tales of the Abyss. Both took about 200 hours and had a lot of teamwork between me and my roommate, so I still look back on it proudly. xD; Also, my LV1 playthrough of KH:BBSFM. Other KH games seem so easy in comparison now.

Online: I don't do a lot of online play but this one time, a bunch of us were playing L4D2 VS on the 360. I don't remember a lot of the details but the teams were horribly mismatched with a lot of experienced friends against this other friend and I. We lost the game, but owned the finale. It was Dead Centre and they got like 3 gas tanks and I think we either finished it or got really close, including one or two instances of me totally kiting Mork as the tank all around the map. XD; It was hilarious.

But I don't have any ideas at all. If I did, I'd do something with them. XD;

I used to have some original stories I'd come up with in high school when I was still aiming to become a comic book artist or something like that, but I can't really remember any of them. But I should go see if I have any of my old notes on them and see if any of it is even basic-RPG worthy. :B

Your most crowning gaming achievement, online or offline.

Wow. Well this is difficult. Offline I would probably have to say beating a level of Halo 3's campaign on legendary with all the skulls on. (Like seriously wtf was I thinking?)
Oh maybe completing the Pokedex in Gen 3 as well, was pretty proud of myself there.

Online: Probably something to do with League of legends. Possibly how I'm on/really close to the pro lvl when playing Fizz which makes it unfair for the other team. >.>

@Lightning
If you want I can give you a bunch of ideas so you can get the ball rolling on your own ideas! If you really cant think of any, why not read a book and try and extrapolate it into a video game kind of idea/story line? That could work.

ToriSora May 4th, 2012 6:48 PM

This is true. I guess when it comes to something that would take as long as a game, though, I feel like I'd want the entire thing to be something new and original instead of a spinoff or derivative of someone else's work. But you're probably right. I spend enough time fangirling over other series that making something based off them probably makes way more sense to get started. :P

It was an effort, getting a Feebas, then a Milotic!!! (Way way WAY to many hours spent doing that). But I did feel rather happy with myself when I completed it.

It's not like you need to make it based off what someone else made its more of the process to get you inspiring and excited to get something going.
Plus if youre fangirling you may as well go uber fangirl and make a fangirl game! The process will definitely get you inspired and may get you thinking of your own ideas! :)

Alice May 4th, 2012 8:50 PM

Thinking up ideas is by far the easiest part of making games for me... my brain just kinda does it on its own, whether I want to or not. lol

I've even gotten inspiration from the shape of some puddles left over after a shower once, and then built an entire game with plot/lore/etc all around it in the few seconds I was looking at it. I guess I just have a really overactive imagination though... once I see something that makes me think about some new game world, I imagine myself as being a character in that world, and start doing things, as if I were playing the game in my head. All of my game ideas (I have dozens at this point. lol) start like that. Always seems to start with thinking about the world, then putting myself in as the main character, and then building a plot for myself so I don't get bored in my little fantasy. lol

(I was originally trying to explain how I think of ideas, but I think I did a terrible job of it. lol)

It's funny that you should mention magic... because my college application essay was all about how I lost the magic of video games when I grew up, and how I found it again in making my own games.

Oh you make them? Nice. TBH for college I may go for an art course but sadly it would be a close by one due to personal issues. I guess though its the first step.

Your most crowning gaming achievement, online or offline.

I've never done online gaming (outside of MarioKart 3DS, at which I never win) so I have exactly zero achievements to list there. Offline, I think my biggest achievement was either entirely filling the PokeDex in Pokemon Red (though since I used Missingno I don't think that really counts either) or unlocking all the unlockable content in Smash Bros Brawl and Tekken 6. Yeah... I'm really not that much of an accomplished gamer :P

ToriSora May 5th, 2012 7:32 AM

I think for me it would be defeating that Emily person in Prototype. took like 3 hours to do but yeah XD

Alice May 5th, 2012 10:48 AM

Your most crowning gaming achievement, online or offline.

For me, it's not actually accomplishing any goal in a game, or showing any great feat of skill. It's actually the day that I rediscovered Tyrian. It was my favoritestestest game EVER as a kid (Like, under 5.), and I had dreams and memories that made it seem like pure magic, but I really didn't remember anything about the game, and had no clue what it was called. I searched for it all the time, and it wasn't until early 2010 that I found it again. Playing through that game again was like the best moment of my life, easily. I still haven't beaten it though... it's really hard later on lol.

As of right now it would have to be completing Donkey Kong Country Returns with a 200% file. Each individual level demanded absolute perfection and would settle for nothing less. In total it took me about 100 hours, and my god was it ever rewarding!

Naww Andy! You are still and accomplished gamer, dont worry you filled a whole pokedex and thats hard without WiFi trading!
Also I can relate to the SSBB thing.. I unlocked everything on the original Smash bros.. Yes I am that awesome.

So your most crowning achievement was getting nostalgia? Thats so cute! How old is that game?? Where did you find it? Also I assume its still the pure magic from your childhood! I get that whenever I play any pokemon game. BEST THING EVER! (Pokemon was my first videogame.)

Also Welcome to the club

@Joshawott how do you get 200% completion O.o
@Teamfail is 20 minutes a good time?? I have no idea :S

TornZero May 6th, 2012 3:11 AM

Concerning Pokémon-related achievements, mine has to be legitimately completing the entire National Dex up to the fourth generation. I didn't first complete it until Emerald, though, when getting to events was a relatively simple task. It was easier in the 4G games thanks to Pal Park and its wider range of event-receiving options.

Elizabeth Greene? She was a bigger pain than the Supreme Hunter (second fight, too)! Freakin' instant-kill crimson tide of death! (Does anyone else get the /worst/ implication from that? or is everyone here innocent concerning anatomical innuendo?)

Fully completing Tales of Symphonia about a billion times! XD

Your most crowning gaming achievement, online or offline.

I'm pretty pathetic on anything that's a crowning moment of awesome. I don't think I have anything crowning to boast online. Offline though, I'm pretty proud of beating the frustratingly difficult Mother/Earthbound Zero. I also caught all catchable legendaries from Gen I - Gen IV in the Pokémon games I played, I think that was the greatest achievement I could ever accomplish in my Pokémon games. Plus I'm pretty happy to have beaten Unknown from BBS using the slowest character in the game. Just had to take many beatings, until I finally got it. I think the first one made me feel accomplished the most, though.

- Collect all the 'KONG' letters
- Collect all the puzzle pieces
- Earn a shiny gold medal in each level
- Beat every level on Mirror Mode

ToriSora May 6th, 2012 7:41 AM

So anyone here heard of or use RPG Maker? Seems very interesting. Saw a few of the finished games and they look very well done. I'm actually testing it out and thinking of using it for a rpg idea I have had for ages.

Alice May 7th, 2012 10:41 AM

Yeah, I've used it since October, so like 7-8 months. You can learn to make games within a few days with that program, (very simple ones of course) and within a few months, you could be making games for real. It can only do 2D games though.

The Apples and Oranges link in my sig was made after like a week of using the program.

Actually, no. For one to merely get a 100% file, they must collect all the 'KONG' letters and puzzle pieces. Collecting all of the 'KONG' letters will unlock the Golden Temple. If that is conquered, Mirror Mode will be unlocked accordingly.

To answer your other question, you're pretty spot-on with the exception of a few key details. In Mirror Mode, Diddy Kong is inaccessible and the player only gets one heart as opposed to the regular two. One hit, and the player must start from the last checkpoint. Believe you me, it's much harder than it sounds, as is trying to upgrade a regular gold medal to a shiny gold medal.

I will have to say Resident Evil 2 I still have a save file from when I was 6th grader. I spent so many long days and night playing that game. Such good times.

Most time into one game... I think I have over 500 hours across all my Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep files. After that, I probably have 300 hours in Kingdom Hearts II and Pokemon Diamond, and then another ~200 in Tales of the Abyss. I'm pretty sure those are my tops.

I didn't start making real games until I got MMF2(And you could argue that they're not real games, because they aren't being coded with an actual language.), but I've been doing things like rom hacking, mapping for CSS/DODS, Morrowind modding, and other almost-game-things for many years.

Currently I'm making a 2D roguelike/rpg/simcity/thingydoodle. lol
Don't even have a name for it yet, but I'm a decent way into it, and have a lot of the plot/lore/etc. planned out.

As for your other question that I'm too lazy to bother quoting:
Most time in any one game would definitely be Counter Strike Source. I definitely have many thousands of hours (I'd guess over 5000, but no clue really) in that game, and even more if you count the mapping I've done for it.

CarefulWetPaint May 7th, 2012 5:21 PM

@YungKnowledge
I never played the resident evil games so i cant say I have any idea why you would put so much time into it! haha. Playing games as a youngster was the best though. there was actually a challenge to finishing a game!

@Lightning my god, the only game Ive putten a decent amount of time on is 250 hours in Pokemon Ruby and
I dunno probaly 100 days in runescape from when I use to play it way back 4 years ago.

@Quil that is also a lot of hours.. :O I assume you were a fan of it yes?
Also have you thought of going into actually programming? Like learning a language that you can program in? I think that seems to be where you should start thinking of heading rather soon. Do you want to work in the video game industry?

We did a month in a camp program I was in once. I do know Flash but I know its not the same thing.

So i'm a novice at it.

It was mainly to do with the programming side of the games, so yes, I have the knowledge to make games. I am currently touching up on my programming skills and learning new methods of how to do certain things I would like to try out in games, but I do make them yes.
I don't have anything published, but I should soon enough.

What about P4 Arena?! It'll be like Street Fighter, but a thousand times more awesome! And I'm going to enjoy the likely familiarity to the BlazBlue series, considering Arc System Works is involved.

What is your longest in-game playing time:

Mine would have to be 400+ hours in Mario Kart 7. I used to play it non-stop, but have cut down to only weekends now. I'd like to consider myself pretty damn good now.

Most fulfilling gaming experience?

Assassin's Creed 2. Yeah, hacking and slashing up demonic buttheads while being in control of a badass, half-human, half-demon hybird is fun, but it can't match the sense of fulfillment that I achieve by being a badass assassin and killing people stealthily while being so darn stylish. Plus, that game had a really engrossing storyline, awesome characters, nice voice cast and really good graphics to boot. The overall experience was just amazing. Even though the game was kinda easy, but yeah.

Your most crowning gaming achievement, online or offline.

Offline: That, to me, has to be this:

Seriously, even getting till the last mission in 'Very Hard' mode in DMC3SE is no piece of cake. Doesn't bear that name for nothing, y'know. I'm proud of it, regardless of the fact that there are people (quite a lot, actually) who have beaten the game in the hardest difficulty (Dante Must Die: Where enemies take almost 15-20 hits before they go down and bosses are insanely powerful) and I'm still probably a newbie at this game even after playing it for such a long time. :D

Online: Naah, never played an online game.

Are any of you guys interested in making games yourself?

I definitely am. Wanna choose scripting in video games as my career. Not really all that knowledgeable about it since all I know right now is a bit of C++ and nothing else. But yeah, I'm ready to work really hard on it. As for ideas and coming up with original stuff, I do come up with 'em every once in a while. But I don't think I've ever thought of anything as different as the 'unfinished swan'. :O

All of my game ideas (I have dozens at this point. lol) start like that. Always seems to start with thinking about the world, then putting myself in as the main character, and then building a plot for myself so I don't get bored in my little fantasy. lol

You, my friend, are quite awesome. <3;

So anyone here heard of or use RPG Maker?

Well, I've been thinking of using it to create an RPG too but...I guess I don't really know how. I'm sure I'll be able to learn it pretty fast but the fact that I don't really have a clear picture as far as the lore and the characters of the RPG are concerned doesn't help. So I've just put "Learning and Creating games using RPG maker and similar programs" on hold for now. :)

What is your longest in game playing time?

I don't really know. I think it has to be Pokemon with a few hundred hours in it. Apart from that, I guess Devil May Cry 3. 50+ hours on that. Mass Effect series and Deus Ex Human Revolution closely follow with almost 40 hours on 'em.

Captain Fabio May 9th, 2012 5:47 AM

I haven't really used RPG maker, because I feel it is a bit cheap from what I want to do.

I have installed Visual Studio '10 and XNA onto my work machine, since I put a graphics card in it today so I can support duel screens and such. The last one fizzled and died so had to put up with one screen for a bit. So, I am going to be working on a couple of things. Won't be games now, more AI simulations I think. Going to try out some different methods and which might be the best for a couple of situations I have in mind.

Edit:

Oh and using C# for the moment, if anyone was that interested! XD

ToriSora May 9th, 2012 6:39 AM

So many KH fans. If I could I'd take you all out to dinner at Olive Garden for being so darn awesome!

Shining Raichu May 9th, 2012 7:04 AM

The most time I've ever spent in one game would have to be the PS1 game Harvest Moon: Back to Nature. For those of you who are not familiar with the Harvest Moon franchise, it's basically just a cute farming simulation game where you move to a town and start a farm, and live your life in the little village where your farm is located. So you grow crops and get livestock, all the while wooing a lady of your choice, getting married and having kids.

It sounds boring, but it's like The Sims in that while it sounds boring on paper, even the smallest achievements send you into fits of joy and before you know it the whole day is gone and you've spent nine hours playing repetitive days on a farm, utterly enthralled XD.

I think part of its charm is that it's just so charming and benign and it's light happy fun where you don't shoot anybody or thump seven kinds of crap out of each other :P. Anyway I got into the franchise when it was on SNES and I've bought every incarnation since, but the highlight was definitely the PS1 game. After that it all began to change too much, and I've really begun to dislike the newer games because they're becoming more and more removed from what the games are meant to be as they try to 'change up' the formula.

This was a major tl;dr but basically the moral of the story is I got the game on the first day of a school holiday, and I spent the entire two week vacation from like 7am to 6:30pm just glued to the TV screen. I didn't go out once in two weeks. SO ADDICTIVE. That has to be the most time I've ever spent on one game.

Well, of course all the Pokémon games, but except them, I liked a lot SSBB (and ironically I'm not really good at this game, but I don't mind, I love to play it nevertheless)
Mario or Luigi? Luigi ... I think it's a more interesting character than Mario.

TornZero May 9th, 2012 8:43 AM

I'll add a couple more games to the discussion. First of all, Overgrowth anyone? A nice indie game based on an old one, Lugaru, where you're running around as a karate-master anthropomorphic rabbit. It's only in its alpha stages right now, but it's very fun.

Then there's a game called Closure that was released recently (well, it's actually based on a flash game of the same name on Newgrounds), the concept being that only what you see exists. If you shine a light on a nearby wall, you'll be able to get stopped by it; conversely, if there's only light on either side of it, you can jump through the wall and land on the other side. If you venture past the safety of the shine of light without somewhere to land, you fall to your death.

Torn closure sounds like a really really interesting game to play! Might have to have a look at it.

Has anyone played Fez? It looks like a super interesting game. Its a puzzle platformer where everything is dependent on your perspective in the game which makes it really cool. Im not sure how to describe it but you should check it out!

As for my favourite LP it would have to be...
The guys from achievement hunter, I know they don't always technically do a full game LP but they are so so hilarious and the saints row 3 LP was fantastic! As well as the ones they've been doing in assassins creed and trails evo. You should all check them out! xD

@Shining
Harvest moon made me want to die on DS. I wanted to play it and see what it was like so much but it never saved on my emulator and just frustrated the hell out of me!

They are literally like a farming simulation game as Andy said. You start off on a Moon or similar place and you have to build up a successful farm to feed yourself and make money etc. Andy did describe it pretty well but I hope my little description helps! You should probably just jump into the first one released for the DS I think that one was the one I played, it was pretty fun xD

Really, no one knows/likes GhostRobo? The other two I named curse rather frequently and all of them play consistently violent games (except for Catherine in theRadBrad's case (he even went through ALL the endings!)), so I can't really recommend either for young kids, but GhostRobo's pretty clean.

I've never even heard of GhostRobo tbh, what games does he play?

Also I was thinking what game has been hyped up the most for you yet ended up disappointing you?
I would have to say probably Gears Of Wars did it to me. Possibly even skyrim..

GhostRobo is currently playing Prototype 2, Jurassic Park, Dark Souls (which has been going on for a while now), Sniper Elite V2, and now Starhawk. He also played the demo for Spec Ops: The Line recently, and showed off some of the features of Uncharted: The Golden Abyss on the Vita.

I am looking forward to Diablo III. It is the trailer on the first page now! :D

derozio May 11th, 2012 12:22 AM

Diablo 3, Assassin's Creed 3, Max Payne 3 and DmC: Devil May Cry.

These games are gonna kick ass. Diablo is just..Diablo. I'm sure it'll be awesome. Had SO much fun with Diablo 2 when I was a lil kid. <3; And AC3 is looking really good. I mean, we can run and kill and the fluidity of Connor's movements in the city is really something. As for Max Payne 3, I've read some really good things about this game. Never really got into playing the first two so this'll be my first...if my PC manages to run it, that is. :/

Last, but not the least, DmC! Well, DMC games have always been close to my heard and even though this game is probably the most universally bashed game ever, I still think this will be pretty good. Especially since I feel Ninja Theory are giving it their best. Dante looks much better than he did in the announcement trailer now and combat is fast. All I need now is a good story and I'll be satisfied. Hopefully, it'll come out on PC as well. :#
