Your starter pokemon isn't your partner

Well did you ever had a playthrough were you "ditch" your starter and made another pokemon your partner?
And what was your starter pokemon then?
And who was your partner?

I had two times I did that. One time in Ruby and one time Soulsilver.
In Ruby I ditch Torchic because I wanted to send him to my diamond and Breloom was my partner then because I used him and liked him a lot.

In Soulsilver I traded my Chikorita and two other pokemon (probarly first route pokemon) to HG to fill up my pokedex and got the three kanto starter pokemon I went for a Kanto team and my partner was Jolteon.

Sydian May 8th, 2012 8:39 AM

I've ditched starters mostly in DPPt (though I usually will keep Empoleon) and BW. I just don't like those starters that much. I rarely ever ditch my starter in RSE, GSC, or RBY, unless I'm doing a challenge where my starter doesn't meet the criteria for the team.

EarthWolfblade May 8th, 2012 9:15 AM

Quite a few times actually. I've switched a Squirtle for Pidgeot and Torchic for Ralts To name a few

The Doctor May 8th, 2012 9:53 AM

Not really. I remember popping Chimchar into the PC box and taking a Shinx with me in Pearl once though. Don't know why, I think it's because I figured out how rubbish Chimchar actually is.

Alice May 8th, 2012 10:26 AM

I usually don't, unless I'm trying to use a really unusual team that I've never used before. I was going to ditch my starter in B/W, because I didn't like any of them, but Oshawott grew on me over time, so I ended up keeping him. lol

blue May 8th, 2012 10:46 AM

In previous generations I never ditched my starter but now, there's so many more Pokémon I'd like on my team in place of my starter who will most likely end up in the Daycare.

Mr Cat Dog May 8th, 2012 11:24 AM

For the most part, I tend to ditch my Starter critter after a suitable alternative comes along. The most recent example is in Black: I chose Oshawott and kept it until it became a Samurott; I would have ditched it (because it's sooooooooo bad, you guys!) sooner, but there aren't really any good Water critters until after the completion of the Elite Four. In Gold/SoulSilver, I ditched by Typhlosion as soon as I could get my hands on a Houndoom (again, after the E4, unfortunately). I think I did end up keeping my Charizard/Blaziken, however, so they are definitely exceptions to this rule.

Your starter pokemon isn't your partner

I ditch Meganium in HeartGold. It has powerful moves but only grass normal, so i gave it to daycare lol, it was lvl54 but anyway. Then i raise a gloom, i dont know why i like it

Killjoy May 8th, 2012 1:39 PM

More often than not, actualy. I almost always keep my Johto Starters, cause I LOVE Typhlosion, and don't use Maganium enough to get bored of it.

mikey May 8th, 2012 1:47 PM

I never ditch starters until I defeat the elite four. I dont know why, I feel weird if I dont have a starter on my team. I grow very attached to them anyway :3

ShinyZweilous CS May 8th, 2012 1:48 PM

Yes, 2 times:
Emerald: Now, ditched Marshstomp to use a Sandslash
White:Ditched Serperior to use a traded Hydreigon from my Black

Scultr May 8th, 2012 1:56 PM

All the time. Waaay back in RBY days when I was like 8 I did a run where Butterfree was my main as well as a Pidgeot. It just depends on my mood when I start playing.

Chimchar line is rubbish? I guess that is what Infernape is OU and Charizard is NU cause the line is rubbish. I get you may not like the style, but Infernape is quite usefully in terms of battle. Albeit both are quite useful in-game.

Jellicent is available pre-elite four as well as Carracosta and Seismitoad. Each of those seem just as viable if not more then Samurott.

As for me I plan on ditch my starters in BW2 since I'd rather use others close to the beginning as my go too. Not to mention I already used Oshawott and Tepig before and I don't really have a desire to use them again, and I am not fond of Serperior so I can't see me using it.

And I really dislike those as well! Believe me, I did consider my crappy, crappy options before finally sticking with that fugly otter/sea-lion thing. :D

Jobrjo May 8th, 2012 2:26 PM

I don't main any Pokemon. I train all equally. A slogan of mine: "Dual-types are all I train, and I train all dual-types." And there are a lot of dual-types in each game. Put it this way: I re-match much. But my starter is on the same level as all my others.

Mr Pleasant May 8th, 2012 3:12 PM

I don't think I ever have ditched my starter. I always felt connected to them in some way so i never let them go. ^^

Frazzevous May 8th, 2012 11:29 PM

I only ditch my starter when I no longer have space for it in my party due to my favorites overloading it, or when I'm not that attached to it.

Zapperz May 8th, 2012 11:59 PM

hmm, ive only ditched my starters in BW and DPPT because those starters do not interest me unlike the others. usually i replaced them with fillers or just hm slaves

Zephele May 9th, 2012 3:28 AM

If I recall correctly, I only started ditching the starter once BW came out. The first time I played through White, I switched out my Dewott once Frillish was available. During my second playthrough, when I had planned a 'multicoloured' team, I ditched Emboar (red) once Pawniard (red) became available.

Every other time since then, each time I replay any of the games, if I plan on not using the Starter from the beginning, I end up boxing them once I get access to my first team member.

He's right, Infernape is way more awesome than Charizard.

Prior to the 5th Gen, I used to ditch my starter due to me wanting to use Pokemon based on looks although I'm considering restarting Platinum and choosing Chimchar cos it's my fave Sinnoh Starter.

Never ditched my starter in Black cos I love the Oshawott line.

XtinaIsMeLuvinWWE May 9th, 2012 4:40 AM

I was quite sad to do it but on Leaf Green I ditched Charizard for a Ninetales cause there weren't enough spaces on my party unfortunately. As a rule I tend to keep them though :)

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ May 9th, 2012 4:49 AM

I typically keep my starter throughout the entire game.

Only exception was Yellow, for painfully obvious reasons. And in Colosseum, I'd typically drop Umbreon about halfway through in favor of other Pokemon and only keep Espeon the whole way through.

Brendino May 11th, 2012 12:07 AM

I've found myself ditching my starter more recently (sometimes completely off my team, other times one of the lesser members on my party). Off the top of my head, I know that my Typhlosion is away in a box on my HeartGold, and my Empoleon is the sixth member of my party on Platinum, but just because it knows Surf and Waterfall.

Legobricks May 11th, 2012 5:53 PM

I always leave the starter now, and have done so in four games to date. I don't pick out things to replace the starter per se, but do often end up with an MVP regardless.

Blue: Bulbasaur → Nidoran♂
Fire Red: Charmander → Farfetch'd
SoulSilver: Chikorita → Zubat pre-E4; Jolteon post-E4
White: Snivy → Mienfoo & Archen

xdom May 11th, 2012 6:10 PM

i keep my starter in the party but not as my main

Satoshi Ookami May 11th, 2012 11:07 PM

I usually ditch my starter after league.
Up to league, I have it in my party but not as main partner =)
If I remember correctly then...
FR - Charizard - partner Machoke
Emerald - Blaziken - partner Rayquaza
Platinum - Infernape - partner Lucario
Soul Silver - Typhlosion - partner Lugia
Black - Emboar - partner Reshiram

Folly~ May 12th, 2012 3:28 AM

In Emerald I ditched my Grovyle for Spinda once. As amazing as it might sound, I got all the way through the league with just him. xD By the time I was through using him in 2007, he was level 82, I think.

And I did it another run-through with Lotad in Black replacing Snivy.

Squirrel May 12th, 2012 6:39 PM

I don't often use my starters tbh, I normally find that they're very average Pokemon and their strategies just aren't interesting. They're just basic Pokemon with standard traits and attacks. I prefer using more interesting Pokemon that'll either give me a challenge in the game or provide an interesting strategy to use :3

SeyedKevin May 14th, 2012 3:59 PM

Okay, guys. Sue me - I ditch my starters. I ditch my starters when I no longer deem them worthy of my companionship, because this is a tough Pokémon world we play in - to serve the best, you have to be the best.

As the vastly accepted conqueror and ruler of the Pokémon world, when a better and more powerful pokémon meets my gaze, I have no option but to disband my faithful Charmander to enhance my strength and perpetuate my reputation as - forgive me - your pokésuperior.

Sure, you may think of it as bad as switching plates with someone at the cafeteria when they're not looking and they have something tasty. Forgive me, that I actually do this - but my title of supreme overlord of the Pokémon world excuses this.

Yes, flame me. Bait me. At least I admitted to it... ditching my starters, that is, not swapping plates at the cafeteria. When the time comes and you claim title of supreme overlord-ship, you'll come to understand it as a necessity for greatness.

Supreme overlord of the pokéworld, over and out.

NoobTrainer May 14th, 2012 7:04 PM

i have kept my starter and ive also ditched it for a butterfree i honestly think butterfree kicks ass better than any starter

Deithien May 21st, 2012 8:23 PM

Who uses their starters anyway?

So ive been lurking around and I havent seen it soooo, who actually uses their starters throughout the game/metagame and why?
I know that I grow attached to mine and generally keep it by my side unless its stats hold me back. I was upset that I had to PC my emboar because of his defensive disabilities, but believe me as soon as I get a chance to breed him out thats gonna change ;)

Cherrim May 21st, 2012 9:21 PM

I always used to use a starter no matter what game I was playing and I never understood how anyone couldn't but... I haven't really used starters at all lately. I didn't overly like any of the starters in gen IV or V so while I used my starter of choice the very first time I played through each gen, I never used them after that. I typically just replace whatever starter I would have chosen with Cherrim when I play any game now. xD;

I used Piplup in Diamond, then used Cherrim in Platinum instead of Turtwig or whatever I chose. I did use my Totodile in HG. In Black, I used my Snivy. In White, I ditched my Tepig for other Pokemon. In Black, I think I might have used Oshawott but I actually traded it in from another game because I decided partway through that I wanted to try it out. So I did use a starter, but it wasn't actually my starter. :P

There was actually a thread a little ways down the page on the same thing so I merged them~

Ho-Oh May 22nd, 2012 12:19 AM

UGH ERICA SO LONG.

Basically every starter I have used, up until HG and B/W, was a bird type (except in Pearl where I have a feeling it was Roserade for some reason lol) because I find the starters boring to use and birds, or anything that has wings is generally of more use to me early on. :( Except funnily enough, when you think of type advantages - that isn't true lool.

Nearsighted king of Ice May 22nd, 2012 5:28 AM

I ditched my starter in Gen 5 and Gen 4, I mostly used my froslass as a partner or my Weavile... I kept Infernape though

alphabeast18 May 22nd, 2012 3:30 PM

I usually ditch my starters. The only time I didn't was for my Treeko in emerald. most recently I ditched my Snivy in White version and Liligant has taken his place as my main.
