Yeah I'll try it. Ive been looking for a good hack with mew & mewtwo as the plot

Danny-E 33 February 8th, 2013 8:34 PM

Cool! Let me know what you think!

pokemonlover493 February 9th, 2013 6:56 PM

I'm not going to play the Red gen.II graphics patch. But don't worry, I have been keeping up with this hack. I can't wait until it is completed. I hope you put out good work for this hack and many other future hacks.

tigs15 February 10th, 2013 6:27 AM

Ohh and if its possible could you make pokemon that evolve by trade evolve normally. I'd love a gengar :P

I applied the patch but it doesnt have a different title screen or plot. The graphics are different thought is that all that was implemented in the demo so far?>

Yes, my game already includes the ability for the four trade evolution Pokemon to evolve by level.
(which you would know if you read the first page of comments.... -_- )

You're talking about the Gen. II graphics patch, right?
Well, yes.. it only updates the graphics... hence the name??
If you go to the graphics patch's thread, did you even read the first post? I explicitly disclaim that the graphics patch is not directly related to Prototype and does not have any of the storyline or map changes or anything like that. It plays exactly like the original Pokemon Red. But it has all the big features implimented in Prototype such as 6x6 backsprites and trainers in full color etc... which you would know if you read the readme or the first post of the graphics patch....

And I'm positive that if you look closer, you'll notice the titlescreen is different. It doesn't look like Prototype's titlescreen obviously, but the "POKéMON" title is greatly improved (actually taken from GSC) and the Charmander on the titlescreen in the new GSC sprite.

Also, the first post was about this hack, sure. But your second post was about the graphics patch, so it belongs in the graphics patch's thread.
Also, there's an edit button.. No need to double post after just ten minutes... >.<

When this is done, message me and playing shall commence!!!!

tigs15 February 12th, 2013 4:59 PM

sorry i didnt see the reply to the person where you said you would add the evolutions but it was kind of hidden. Also i got confused because you said "Try what ive done so far" and called it the demo so i thought it was part of prototype.

egiannis February 16th, 2013 6:01 PM

This hack it seems very interesting how is the progress coming along?

Del February 18th, 2013 9:19 AM

Your hack is a master piece!

Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry for sounding snobbish before. I was out of line.

Thank you! And I've had trouble finding time to work on this lately. This is my second semester of senior year and I have a lot of end of the year projects, and there are a lot of math team and science club competitions picking up so my weekends haven't been very free lately. I work on it when I can, but no exciting progress lately. :P

This game seems pretty good, I like how you revamped the colors on the pokemon.

Danny-E 33 March 2nd, 2013 10:45 PM

Thank you very much!
Have you tried out the Pokémon Red - Gen. II Graphics Patch?

IrishAurum March 3rd, 2013 12:13 PM

Hey Danny-E? would you mind when this comes out that i could do a lets play of it?

Danny-E 33 March 7th, 2013 10:32 PM

That would be spectacular! I'll keep in touch with you, and let you know as soon as I have some real gameplay ready for a public release! :) Thanks!

IrishAurum March 10th, 2013 6:16 PM

alright thank you so much

Al3x April 9th, 2013 2:58 PM

This is still looking amazing! Hope to see more progress soon.

hackstar April 10th, 2013 10:20 AM

hmm... you should have add some more event about mewtwo....

unIQuE-_-SK April 11th, 2013 8:05 AM

Varion Bluefire April 13th, 2013 6:25 PM

Well done! :3

Yeah, I want all of you to know I am not gone, I've just been busy. This is my senior year of high school and I have been far too busy this semester to work on this. But I have three weeks of high school left as of today and then I'll be working hard on this again!

What do you mean? My summary of the storyline should go more in depth on how Mewtwo is involved? Or the actual game should include him more? Because he is definitely heavily included in the game.

I've always struggled with the idea of making Trade Pokemon evolve at certain levels since it's arbitrary and dependent on the hacker.
Would you consider using "Trade Stone" items instead, or is the decision final?
That way, like a trade, the player can decide when to level the Pokemon.

Hmm. I understand what you mean with "the player can decide when to level" but I really don't like the idea of a "trade stone". I like the elemental stones and feel like making something up called a trade stone does the rest of the stones a disservice. I have considered making two new stones, one for Haunter and Kadabra called Mind Stone or Ghost Stone or something and another one for Graveler and Machoke called Earth Stone or Fist Stone or something.

Frankly, making them evolve by level is much easier. I have absolutely no idea how to make a new item and properly configure its use.

80C May 6th, 2013 5:56 AM

Greatest graphics in GenI I ever saw!!
Keep it working on it, it's amazing!

Thanks! I appreciate it :)

I have 2 question about your hack:

1- I knew you was talking to repoint the palette table in order to have more free space... so I guess you're going to add\use new palettes.
Will the new palettes be used for other graphics Or eventually for Pokemon to make each one have his own palette?

2- Did you planned to color also overworlds?
I heard of a hack that makes the overworlds colored (GSC style).

Good question. So yes, you and I have talked about how the palette table has been moved to another bank since it took up all the free space in its original bank and could have no more palettes added to it.
When I ran out of free space, this caused me to have to make lots of Pokémon share palettes and some of the palette-sharing is a bit of a stretch and a few Pokémon, such as Raichu, look just far off enough that it's noticeable.

With the table in a different bank with plenty of space, I am giving every Pokémon its own palette id, even for palettes that are identical, just so everything is customize-able and nothing is hard coded. Same thing with the trainer palettes. Some of the trainer palettes in the current version are an even further stretch than Raichu. I will give each trainer their own palette id so that it can be 100% accurate to the GSC sprites.

All this brings me to palette id EA. So I have 21 palettes open (from EB to FF).
One of those palettes has to be the back sprite palette for Ivysaur/Venusaur. I will probably just make that one palette, rather than giving each of then a separate back sprite palette.
And I plan on adding 17 new Pokémon which will each get their own palette.
Which leaves me with 3 palettes left until I come up with a use for them.

For your hack, you are better off using the version of the Graphics Patch that you have instead of the next version that will be out that will give each Pokémon their own palette. You should stick with the condensed palette table so you have all the room for new palettes for your expanded Pokédex.

That is more like a distant dream at the moment. As you probably know, FroggestSpirit began working on this but he quit. I was gonna try to pick it up myself but I couldn't understand any of his notes and he had forgotten too much of it to explain it to me. :/

The hack you've heard of is either FroggestSpirit's "Red in Color" or KBM's "Scratch-Coded Red".
Neither of which are finished.

80C May 25th, 2013 11:22 AM

Yes! I like the idea to put new Pokemon in the hack, so will be there some of the 4th gen evolutions, like electivire and so on? I would like it!

Yes, I'll continue hacking upon the original Gen2 Patch v1.0, It fits good, anyway, I didn't noticed of Raichu, maybe I'll could add a new palette for him... actually I need to put 48 new palettes in my hack... the sharing palette system you created in the ver1.0 is ok for me, and I'll try to share more palettes as possible (like Bellsprout-larvitar etc.) so I could put all the pokemon I need (79)...

but I'm a bit confused with the max allowed of new palettes... you used C8 -circa, I don't remember now- palettes, this means that from C8 or whatever to FF I have avaiable 53 palettes, 48 won't go too far I think, but you said I could add something like 100 new palettes instead of 53... is it right or I did wrong calculations?

EDIT:
I noticed of Zubat and Golbat palette of GS, I remembered that palette was funky, is it used for other pokemon that aren't zubat or Golbat? Because I plan to change that palette to make it like the Crystal one, that is more accurate.

Danny-E 33 May 27th, 2013 10:55 AM

Where are you getting 0xC8 palettes from???
The current version of the graphics patch you have only goes up to palette id 0x8B, so including id 00 there are 0x8C (140) palettes total out of a possible 0x100 (256).
So you have 0x100-0x8C (256-140) palettes remaining which equals 0x74 (116).
I said all this already

and these gen II evolutions: Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Crobat, Bellossom, Politoed, Slowking, Steelix, Tyrogue, Hitmontop, Blissey, Kingdra, Scizor, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, Espeon, Umbreon, and Porygon2.

Please read this. (do keep in mind this is for Prototype and not the Graphics Patch so there are a few replacements that are mentioned in the first post of this thread, but this list is still useful)
As you can see, I took sprites and palettes from gold, silver AND CRYSTAL. Obviously, if the GS palette looks goofy, I didn't use it. If you even bothered to check my graphics patch that you downloaded, you would see Zubat and Golbat have the palettes from Crystal.
And if you're still curious, Zubat and Golbat share a palette with Poliwhirl and Poliwrath.

80C May 27th, 2013 12:40 PM

Oh sorry, I took note wrongly of the palettes I have left, I exchanged the two hexnumbers between them, so I wrote C8 instead of 8C... ha, ok, so I have 115 palettes left (now 113, I added 2 Pokemon), so I could add new pokemon too (most of 2nd and 4th generation, but also 1 from 6th gen and 4 from 3rd Gen!)

I discovered the palette(s) I wanted use aren't from crystal but are RSE-like, so I guess I have to add 2 extra palettes, 1 for zubat and 1 for golbat.

PS: Could I use the sprites for Magmortar, Tangrowht, Magnezone & Porygon2?

PPS: A "Trade Stone" would safe more space in the ROM rather than create a special stone for each TradeEvolutive Pokemon, I'll take the "TradeStone" way and then special objects for the other 2nd and 4th Gen pokemon (upgrade, metalcoat etc.)

Thanks to FroggestSpirit for helping me get "Presents" to be displayed like the original Red and Green.
And thanks to Sanqui for helping me change "Game Freak" to "Danny-E 33".

Del June 7th, 2013 6:52 AM

Heaay Danny wheres download link? or not yet?

80C June 7th, 2013 7:04 AM

Wow... how did you assigned the palette to the new "Nintendo\Danny-E 33" logo?
Was it there already or you had to add a new one and then insert a new routine\asm?

Danny-E 33 June 7th, 2013 9:20 AM

That's actually the default palette that the Game Freak logo uses. But the original logo only uses two colours: white and the darker brownish colour. I just used a sprite that also uses the lighter brownish colour and black.

Danny-E 33 June 9th, 2013 9:20 AM

I have a new title screen:

http://i.imgur.com/NfblXqu.png

miksy91 June 9th, 2013 12:30 PM

Looking good! I take it you disabled the pokemon scrolling, right?

By the way, have you thought of adding a sound effect for Mewtwo's cry to be played before getting out of the title screen? Accomplishing that shouldn't be too hard if you feel like doing it.

Actually, I still have the Pokemon scroll, they just stop in the center. And now each new Pokemon loads its palette when it scrolls onto the screen.

In Red, the cry of the Pokemon currently being shown is automatically played, so as long as Mewtwo is on screen, that's already the case. :p

Danny-E 33 June 10th, 2013 8:54 PM

Here is the completely finished title screen! This was a lot of hard work and I'm very pleased with it! I hope you like it!!

Prototype Title Screen - "Who's That Pokémon?"

Danny-E 33 June 14th, 2013 11:48 AM

Hey guys! I updated the title screen again and now it randomly cycles through all 151 Pokémon! Instead of choosing between only 16 like it normally does. I updated the links in the previous post and in the first post to show you the new video!
I think this has certainly become the most complex and creative gen I title screen hack!
What do you guys think??

Raj June 14th, 2013 12:01 PM

Looks great though I admit I am surprised at how much effort you are putting into the title screen alone. While nice try not to burn yourself out we want to play the finished game after all.

Danny-E 33 June 14th, 2013 12:14 PM

Yeah, I certainly acknowledge I have that problem.. But the title screen is all done now, I promise! I am moving on!

The one up side to my habit of spending too long on a specific feature is that I think the end result is gonna be fantastic!

Raj June 14th, 2013 1:09 PM

I can easily agree with you there and I have no doubt that by the time you finish this game it will be truly fantastic.

ZakTheManaic June 14th, 2013 1:48 PM

Hey, thanks a lot!
Now I don't want to put a target on my back or anything if this turns out to be wrong, but I really want a first beta of two gyms to be out by the end of the summer. No promises.

ZakTheManaic June 15th, 2013 5:35 AM

I cant wait for this to come out. Idk why more people don't do more hacks on the gen 1 games, there so fun to play!

Danny-E 33 June 15th, 2013 8:09 AM

Thanks a lot!! :)
And the reason is that there isn't as much documentation on the older games and making a good hack is harder. They're also 'old' and not so fancy like the new games. Honestly, I don't like the busy, fanciness of the new games. It's too much for me.

ZakTheManaic June 15th, 2013 1:23 PM

So Gen 1 games are easier to make cause ive been thinking about making my own hack.

Danny-E 33 June 15th, 2013 5:02 PM

No. Gen I hacks are not easier.

As Danny said, no.
Even 2nd generation hacks might be easier...
If you are beginner you are better with hacking 3rd generation ROMs as they have most tools.

Quote:

I think that difficulty is a wrong word for thinking about, "Is hacking Gen I easier than gen II or possibly gen III ?". It's like this;

There aren't any game-specific tools for hacking gen I or gen II that would give you keys to do anything you'd like. You always need the background knowledge of what you're doing.
Gen I is "the most difficult" since almost everything is accomplished with hex editors, assemblers and disassembly. In gen II, there's a scripting engine but making use of it requires a lot of background knowledge about Gameboy and how it works. Gen III is coded so that you're able to do a lot of stuff without knowing anything about the games and how they're coded.

So if you wanted to do a simple hack, a gen III game would be the most simple option. If you wanted to go for something bigger and knew what you were doing all along, it wouldn't matter much if you want to hack gen I, II or III.

ZakTheManaic June 16th, 2013 1:48 PM

Ya I meant to say ARE gen 1 games easier lol, my mistake. But thanks guys ill prob make a gen 3 hack first. And again good luck with Pokémon Prototype.

Danny-E 33 June 16th, 2013 7:16 PM

Yeah, I think the way miksy put it is pretty good. Hacking a gen I game is more tedious, time consuming and less intuitive, which may be seen as synonymous to "harder".

ZakTheManaic June 17th, 2013 5:48 AM

Hey Danny do you have an estimate of when the full game will come out?

Danny-E 33 June 17th, 2013 9:13 AM

No, at this point, there is no way to estimate how long til the entire game is finished.

ZakTheManaic June 17th, 2013 2:38 PM

What about Alpha or Beta?

It is worth mentioning that I only want to release a single demo for my hack, and then the full game. I don't like the idea of having a million different betas floating around.

All of em! The birds will all be in the same place. Mew will be a new event! And I can't tell you where Mewtwo will be! That would defeat the whole purpose of the game! ;)

Hey is it okay if I can be a beta tester for your hack ?

Danny-E 33 August 7th, 2013 8:26 AM

Perhaps. I will let you know in a few months.

TGmaerZXZ October 31st, 2013 3:24 AM

Oh man, I just realized when I was reading you're post that I misspelt my name. It's supposed to be TGamerZXZ not TGmaerZXZ *sigh*. Anyway I'm reallly loking forward to this. As some who was born in 2001 and only started play Pokemon when he was seven, most of us don't go back to old games, but in my opinion Red and Blue were better than Diamond and Pearl.

It look's incredible that's for sure, I definately like the first music track, and while the 2nd one is good as well I think I will likely turn it off fairly quickly since it sounds like it would grate me if i was forced to listen to for a while.

The third sound track is one I love.
It is upbeat and catchy and makes me want to play the game. :) (Am I the only one who thinks the smiley emoticon looks weird?)

The forth is one I like as well.

Also is there really only 4 sound tracks?
Because I hear more than 4 of them?

The 5th is good for a Pokemon Center, not one I am a really a fan of, but I dount I will be spending enough time in a Pokemon center to matter.

I'm sorry to hear that. Are you talking about the Route 1 theme?

What do you mean? The four new songs are Pallet Town, Route 1, Viridian City, and Pokecenter. What else are you hearing?

Nope, that one is my favorite. :)
I rewatched the video and this time did not skip any parts.
I was actually talking about the Pallet town one ironically enough,

I rewatched the video and this time did not skip any parts apperently due to my skipping leaving me at a bad part in the Pallet town theme, due to the change in song I assumed it was an entirely new one. Rewatching it showed that I was wrong though. (My bad)

I see. So it is the second half of the Pallet Town theme that you are not fond of?
Do you have specific advice on how to make it better?

Yes, that song will be replaced. Most major music is being re-written.
Some examples of songs that are not being remade are the songs that play when people like Oak or your rival greet you, or the Game Corner theme. But most town/route/dungeon/battle music is being replaced. :)
(all thanks to my younger brother, who is a very talented composer)

Music is not a major hobby of mine so forgive me if I am a little unclear.

Alright after listening to Pallet town a second time I would suggest something more similar to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXUa2QRAyq4.

Hm. I guess I get what you mean with the annoying sound.
I think it's more the tone of the instruments rather than the music notes themselves.
I'll see what tweaks I can do to make it easier to listen to.

I am glad you could understand what I meant to say.

I stopped taking Music in grade 6, (more than 7 years ago) so it's been a long time since I had to be even remotely professional about it.

This hack reminds Me of the days I spent playing Pokemon red. Man I spent most of my childhood playing Pokemon red and Ruby.

swiswi18 November 30th, 2013 8:58 PM

Still super excited for your hack!
Very impressed with all the progress and great work you have put into it, keep it up! I'm sure all the 1st gen lovers are eager to play this, as I am myself :)
Good luck!

Danny-E 33 December 2nd, 2013 7:05 AM

Thank you very much! I'm glad you are excited!

I would also like to thank everyone who has taken the trouble to put my hack's banner in their signature! It is very appreciated!

No, I'm not implementing mega evolutions.

That is completely understandable and I support that, but that makes me curious, is it even possible to make a mega evolution on a GBC rom?

I am not saying you should, I am just curious if anyone has been able to?

Pretty much the same way as the GBA, you just replace some Pokemon with mega forms and edit evolutions.

Except I will be adding 17 Pokémon and I'm not replacing any existing Pokémon.
Being capable of adding new Pokémon is not the problem. I just think that mega evolutions are dumb.
