Rom hackers do what the games are capable of doing, while programmers do what they want to do :P

This was a joke more than anything! Not sure if you get it or not, but Danny should. I still felt like quoting to your message though since it's "sort of related".

I admit I don't really get the joke, although I am fine with you quoting me since it does seem to be somewhat related.

Although do you care to share the joke, I have a feeling it will be funny once I understand what exactly you mean.

He is saying that "rom hackers" simply edit data of a rom and only create things within the bounds of what the game is already capable of doing.
But a "programmer" has the ability to create something even if the game is not capable of doing it to begin with.

And he is exactly correct. If I wanted, I could program Mega Stones and Key Stones and let the player use the Key Stone to evolve a Pokémon with the correct Mega Stone and trigger a mid battle evolution.
But it would be a LOT of work, since none of this exists in the game currently, and I would have to be programming a lot of this from scratch. And like I said, it wouldn't be worth it, because I think mega evolutions are dumb.

Ah alright, (tilts head slightly)
Thank you for explaining (I wonder if you got the reference I put in there)

As for the Mega Evolutions like I said before, it is completely understandable and I don't particularly desire to see Mega evolution in this game anyways, I just got curious so thanks for indulging me. :)

Considering how often you give us progress reports, I believe you.

I am guessing the others are just worried that this potentially amazing hack may fade away like many other promising hacks.

Danny-E 33 February 20th, 2014 5:54 AM

Yeah, I understand that. But I definitely won't stop working on this.
As of now, I'm getting close to what I want to be the Prototype Demo.

I have not been around in a while, mostly because I have spend a lot of time working on a disassembly of Pokémon TCG.
But today I have an exciting update!
Now, each Pokémon has its own mini sprite used in the party menu!

Credit for the artwork goes to: Blue Emerald, Chamber, Solo0993, and Lake.

Mydrago May 13th, 2014 9:53 PM

Nice work Danny ;)
I like it :)
This going take more people to Red GBC hacking
The sprites are really good
Can't wait to see more of your great GBC work
Keep it up great work

Incredible, are you also gonna implement these on your Pokémon Red - Gen. II Graphics Patch

Probably not, seeing as these graphics are not from Gen II.
And I have to have some cool features that are just for Prototype. ;)

As an experiment, I have successfully added a "Devolve Stone" but I haven't fully decided on if I should include it in the game.

What do you guys think? The item is used like any other stone, but it prints "ABLE" next to any Pokemon that has a pre-evolution, and prints "NOT ABLE" next to those who don't.

Astraea June 27th, 2014 1:59 AM

Good job done so far in hacking a Gen 1 game! Good Luck! thats what i say to every hacker !

What if it was an in-battle item? It could devolve the opposing Pokemon. You'll have to be clever about reloading that pokemon's data/stats after the stone is used...

Danny-E 33 June 27th, 2014 6:00 PM

Hm, that is very clever! I like it!

When I think about it, it sounds like quite a silly item to include for the player.
The only benefit I can think of is to have a super power Eevee with fire/thunder/water moves.

I like your idea better!

AluminiumOxide July 7th, 2014 11:37 PM

Red hack But still great. I hope to see new ideas from it.

Danny-E 33 December 15th, 2014 12:19 PM

Thank you.

Progress is slow, but here is a new custom song.

This is the gym theme, composed by Mickey-A 42.

I also reorganized the first post a bit, adding each custom song in a separate video.

I also updated the Title Screen video. The title screen now includes an 8-bit remake of the original TV theme song, "Gotta Catch 'em All"!

Danny-E 33 December 19th, 2014 10:18 AM

Alright, I had to update the title screen one more time.

This time I added in a graphic for the "Gotta catch 'em all!" logo!
I had to move the Pokemon logo up one line and move the Prototype text down one line to squeeze in the new logo, but it looks pretty cool! Check out the above post or the first post for an updated title screen video!

piplup1036 December 23rd, 2014 12:13 PM

Very neat! Can't wait to try this one out sometime. Also loving the new music and title theme.

More updates coming soon I hope!

I saw this way back when there was a stall in posts and I thought this project was dead (I'm glad it's not :P)

Valknarok January 9th, 2015 3:39 AM

I finally got around to creating an account on this great site. I would like to personally thank you, Danny-E 33, for the hard work and dedication you've given to this wonderful series, and more specifically, to the Gen II graphics patch. It's thanks to that graphics overhaul that I was inspired to begin my endeavor of creating ROM hacks of this beloved series of games.

Currently, I am readying my Gen I ROM hack (which of course utilizes your patch) for alpha testing. Once the game is ready for open beta, I'll be sure to update everyone. Of course, proper credit will be given to you for the excellent graphics/music patch. This project would not be possible without it.

Yep, college life and living out on my own takes up most of my time. And even then, I usually find other things to do with the little free time I have. But I still work on this from time to time.

You're very welcome. I would recommend you consider working directly with the source code of the Gen II Graphics Hack. It is a very powerful way of create complex hacks very efficiently.

Valknarok January 10th, 2015 1:44 AM

That's certainly my aim with this/these project(s). I've really only had one snag as of late, and that's with the map editing. The map editor I use is ClassicMap, and when try to move the trainers around on the map, I load into the game, they are where I put them, but if I go to another place and come back, their positions are reset back to their vanilla state. Of course, this means the trainers end up inside trees, rocks, and other terrain and we just can't have that, haha! Is this something you've personally encountered? If it helps, I am using a Pokemon Red Version ROM, your Gen II patch, and running it on VisualBoyAdvance.

Danny-E 33 January 10th, 2015 8:10 PM

No, that is not a problem I've ever had with ClassicMap. But let's not derail this thread any further. Shoot me a pm, or join the #pret irc on irc.freenode.net if you want to talk about this further.

Valknarok January 10th, 2015 9:39 PM

Alright, I apologize. I will do that.

TheRealDylanator January 23rd, 2015 11:46 AM

Also, I have a really cool update today! I added a brand new "fusion" evolution method!
It affects a few Pokemon, and causes them to evolve when they gain a level while you have the right Pokemon in your party. Then those Pokemon fuse!

I always tell myself that I can work on this hack during the school year, but it just doesn't work out that way. I only ever really have time to work on this during breaks, like Christmas and spring break. Maybe I'll work on this more in the summer, maybe not.

Akiak May 7th, 2015 3:37 PM

This one looks really nice, title screen is amazing + lots of cool ideas!

Hope this gets worked on further, would love to play it.

Danny-E 33 May 14th, 2015 1:10 PM

Well, thanks for appreciating it. I've lost a lot of inspiration to work on this, but I'm trying to get it back. I'm just more invested in other hobbies at the moment. As soon as I ever have more to show for this hack, I will post it here.

inqualls May 14th, 2015 5:19 PM

I hope you don't give up. This is very inspiring work. I wish I knew how to decompress and compress the trainers and pokemon graphics the way you have.
I think it would a shame to not continue with this. I'm sure figuring out how to hack the original pokemon red/blue games is no easy task. I can hardly find any info on how to hack gen 1 or find any tools that are still available for download. I guess I got into the hacking scene a bit to late. I had vast ideas to revamp this classic game and your work here comes close. Good luck and thanks.

inqualls May 18th, 2015 10:01 PM

Thank you. I've actually gotten some custom sprites into the game already. It's just going to take a great deal of patience to learn how ASM works and getting use to finding offsets through pointers or the other way around. I'm currently stumped on the Rivals pic. I found the pointer in offset 61A8 which is 49 60 but I can't figure out where this pointer is jumping to. I tried x16049 but there were no visible changes whatsoever. I was surprise the game continued to work as normal instead of crashing. As far as the disassembly project goes. I'm having a tough time reading through the asm files. I've used the search engine to navigate through the main.asm for certain trainer pics but like I said I have a lot to learn. This is my first attempt hacking outside of custom sprite work and level graphics. Thanks again. BTW, ShantyTown I sent you a pm about Maize.

Danny-E 33 May 31st, 2015 1:08 PM

The great thing about the disassembly (one of many great things) is that there is no more pulling your hair out over pointers. The source files just use labels. The assembler resolves pointers when you build the rom, so it really saves you a ton of time and cuts out most opportunities for errors.

Danny-E 33 January 6th, 2016 9:09 AM

Hey, guys, first off, I know it has been a while and I'm sorry I haven't worked on this lately. College is rough.

Just wanted to let you know I redid the first post with all new image links since the old ones were starting to die.

If you haven't taken a look at this before, check out some of the cool things I've already done, like fusion evolution and my brother's awesome original music. (in the first post)

In the upcoming months I plan to spend a lot more time working on this hack. In the meantime, the only other update I made to the first post is that I added the whole official list of all gen II and gen IV Pokemon that are (Already!!) in this hack.

Stay tuned!

PokemonMaster_j January 6th, 2016 12:27 PM

Looks great! Love the custom music!

No idea, sorry. I just work on this hack when I have the time and motivation, so there's never any predicting how much work will get done in the near future.

But I finally have another announcement!

I redid the title screen yet again. This time I redid how the Pokémon silhouettes are handled.
Now each Pokémon's whole body is black, with no white spaces inside their body. (This actually took a lot longer to accomplish than you might initially think)

Here's a comparison to see what I mean:

This update is a huge improvement for certain Pokémon like Dewgong, Goldeen and many others that have mostly white bodies.

Also, I think this is the first time that all the new Gen II and Gen IV Pokémon are actually being exposed in game!

Let me know what you think!

lg95 January 23rd, 2016 1:51 PM

you mean pre/post evolutions of the 1gen? that is great, I always wanted it since I don't like newer gens pokemon, let me ask you something, will the gym leaders and elite 4 be the same? like blaine, bruno, etc...

I forgot to ask how you implemented this. Did you create 1-bit masks for each pokemon, or did you write a space-filler algorithm? (or something else that I can't think of?)

Much less elegant than that. I was going to create a bunch of 1bpp graphics for each pokemon, but since they have different sizes and the decompression routine already handles centering the different sized pics, I just made them all compressed pics just like the normal pics and hi-jacked the decompression routines.

Well that's the simplest solution, and simplicity is often the best.

I thought about writing a space filling algorithm, and it would have worked well enough for most pokemon, but it would make Victreebel and Articuno (and others) look really bad, because I don't think there is a way I could have written it so that it would leave the insides white where it is supposed to for those pics. Not to mention it would probably be a lot harder than what I did anyway.

Del July 16th, 2016 6:19 PM

Heyaa Danny!! How things are going with the next beta? if you need any beta testers I would gladly do so, all the best!

Danny-E 33 July 20th, 2016 9:19 PM

Hey, thanks for showing interest.

I haven't made much progress since I last posted in January, because it was an especially tough semester. And since the summer started, I've been preoccupied with other gameboy projects. But this is absolutely still on the agenda! I'm really sorry I don't have more to offer than that.

Frownyface77 July 21st, 2016 10:13 AM

Looks interesting, good luck!

Danny-E 33 November 22nd, 2016 12:09 PM

I know it's been inexcusably long since I've worked on this, but I only have two weeks left of this semester, and next semester should not be as rough as this one. I will try to get something cool done over break get this hack back on track :)

Inner Rhymes February 4th, 2018 2:32 AM

I hope I am not breaking the rules but is this hack still in progress?

Danny-E 33 February 4th, 2018 7:04 AM

At least for now, no. I've been way too busy for so long to be able to dedicate any significant amount of time towards this hack. I would love to have enough free time in the future to be able to finish this hack, but I'm not sure when that will happen.
