The Medal System

Medals are newly introduced to the games. You gain them by accomplishing various tasks throughout the game. You can get them from doing anything like catching Pokemon to doing various tasks. There's over 200 different medals in 5 different categories. Alder gives you the medal box after you defeat two trainers in his house on route 20.

Serebii has more information on their page, here!

Discuss this new feature. Are you going to complete the medal task and become the elite medalist?

Draconicsoul June 22nd, 2012 12:53 PM

So, from what I understand, this is basically the Pokémon equivalent of an Achievements system? I wonder what some of them are...

Going for all 200+ may be as daunting a task as the Living Dex challenge.

fayt666 June 25th, 2012 3:42 PM

u get medal case when i got mine i got like 3 medals on the spot the dude hangs in a pokecenter and u talk to him and he unlock more. somethin bout 50 dont understand quite yet but may be catch 50 pokemon or see 50 pokemon if i guess.

Wulfre June 26th, 2012 12:44 AM

I like the thought of playing for the medals but how well executed are the challenges, those who play JAP?

vaporeon7 June 26th, 2012 3:29 AM

I like this, it'll give me something to do when I've completed everything else, I'm going to aim to get all 200!

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire June 26th, 2012 8:34 AM

It sounds fun, hope I can figure out the challenges though by then their might be a list of the requirements.

Asuf June 26th, 2012 12:38 PM

I'm glad ideas such as this have been inserted in the game, it adds a lot of replay value unlike Black/White, you'll definitely be spending more time in this game, not just on medals, theres so much more!

Satoshi Ookami June 27th, 2012 1:32 AM

It's pretty interesting feature :D I can't say I'm hunting the medals but if I meet up with the medal guy I'm sure to talk to him to get some medals :)

Livewire June 27th, 2012 8:17 AM

I'd rather snag cool Pokemon like Dream World females and the Therian Forme Kamis, but collecting all these is pretty cool and something to do when you're bored, lol.

Xander Olivieri June 27th, 2012 8:35 AM

Well a full list is now up.
http://serebii.net/black2white2/medals.shtml

I'll write up a list for here when I get back from work tonight.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire June 27th, 2012 8:42 AM

That's a whole lot of Medals.
By the way we don't get all the medals from the same guy do we?

Draconicsoul June 27th, 2012 12:04 PM

Oh my goodness, some of these are going to be ridiculous to get. "Beat the Elite Four and Champion using only one pokémon?" And one of them just looks entertaining, "catch the graffiti on the back of a sign"? interesting.

I can't wait to see how many of these I never get, due to lack of Pokémon-playing friends IRL.

Kenmoor June 27th, 2012 12:48 PM

This seems like overkill to me... 200+ medals to collect (though some seem easy-"Ace Pilot:Use Fly to fly across the Unova Region")... it does seem like they want us to play the game for a long time coming. Maybe to hold us over till their next game release? Though knowing some hardcore fans will get this done in about... let's say a minimum of a month? Ugh, for me i'll try for a hundred and whatever medal i'll randomly stumble upon. Well once it gets over here in the fall(? I think.)

bwburke94 June 28th, 2012 7:11 AM

Once October 7 rolls around... OH GOD THERE'S ONE FOR CATCHING 'EM ALL! GAAAAAAH!.

One Pokemon...well I guess that would be a challenge without a legendary...or a Zoroark (I used one to beat the league in BW...maybe I should try again ;) )

Yeah, there's a selection of 4 I guess... I don't really care about TV in games so maybe it's more... but still it's more than 1.

Raichupacabra June 29th, 2012 12:11 AM

I like the sound of this. This will will make the game longer.

Maybe this might be one of the first steps for an achievement system in Nintendo's future.

bwburke94 June 29th, 2012 10:03 AM

This will make an 100% run hell, but I'm looking to break the Speed Gamers' catch-em-all time (for in-game play time) first. The time to beat is 335 hours and 52 minutes, and I am up for the challenge.

Sydian June 29th, 2012 11:42 AM

Screeeeeeeeeeew that! Sounds like the sprite system in Harvest Moon DS Cute. Which is awful. Luckily, these medals aren't a requirement unlike the harvest sprites in HM. So yeah, I'm probably not gonna make an effort to get any and I won't even remember to go get them. So...lol.

bwburke94 June 29th, 2012 5:24 PM

What's really odd is that there's a medal for getting every other medal. Sounds like they just wanted to put one in randomly to make it a power of two minus one. Crash prevention, maybe?

That's actually a traditional award that appears in all videogames that give these kinda awards. There has always been a Trophy/Award for collecting all other Trophies/Awards.

Jellicent♀ June 29th, 2012 6:04 PM

So I'm totes gonna like, try to get almost all of them. This system is so much fun. I'm an achievement lover. Like, I try to do so in every game, but now that Pokemon has it, I'm totally stoked for this. Plus I can put them on the Trainer Card! Yay!

droomph June 29th, 2012 6:05 PM

Yes...it seems like we'll have plenty of fun making RHs ^^

Well in all honesty I never liked achievment systems so I don't think this will be any different (unless it's like a Force Gem kind of thing but I doubt they have the effort to add that much into BW2.

PaxAmericana July 2nd, 2012 10:09 AM

The medal system sounds appealing because it adds more to the game that BW lacked. It will be fun to try and get them all.

bwburke94 July 2nd, 2012 10:53 AM

Which includes catching them all. AND I MEAN THEM ALL. It appears that missing events count as missing, though I'm not sure about Meloetta and Genesect.

vaporeon7 July 2nd, 2012 2:23 PM

I am going to try and get all the medals because I like to try and fully complete my games. I like the idea because it gives me even more things to do after the Trainer Card.

They normally don't require you to catch event Pokémon.

Ω Ruby and α Sapphire July 2nd, 2012 10:56 PM

Sounds awesome. Gotta get em all!

XtinaIsMeLuvinWWE July 10th, 2012 2:39 PM

I like that it says (on Serebii) you can get them for catching pokémon - it's kind of like the dude in Solaceon Town that gave you poké balls for the same thing :)

I like it personally, it's another thing that you can work towards in addition to the main journey :)

Melinda July 28th, 2012 3:57 PM

I actually love the medal system. It's something fun I can work on post-game. There are so many of them, though. Might take a while to collect them all.

PlatinumDude July 28th, 2012 4:30 PM

I don't think I'll be able to get all the medals in B2/W2 because I don't really bother much with completing the Pokedex. But still, they're a neat addition because of how you get rewarded for doing certain "bonuses."

antemortem July 28th, 2012 6:57 PM

eh, I wish Pokemon games wouldn't go in the same direction as Sony, but whatever.

nuzamaki90 August 12th, 2012 3:58 AM

I wasn't too excited about the Medal System at first and I'm still not, but I do like it a bit.

Maybe it's because I love unlocking Achievements on the 360, I just love getting rewarded for doing something right in a game.

I just wish you don't have to run all the way to a PkMn Center just to get the medals, I'd rather their be a notification of some form that says you got this medal.

kohei August 19th, 2012 12:27 AM

For those who want to complete medals:
Tentori Thousand/Scoring a Thousand is probably the hardest medal to get.
Scoring a 1000 points in Fes Missions requires the participation of at least 30 good players who know how to rack up points.

Kevin August 19th, 2012 11:37 AM

Yeah, probably after defeating the main game I'll get all the medals so I can feel complete. Lol it reminds me of the Trophy system a little from Kingdom Hearts.

Bourne-mouth August 19th, 2012 3:31 PM

Wow. I like this new feature. I can't wait to get this done with and earn all medals!

I guess I'm a little used to using only one Pokemon in beating the E4, so that said achievement will be a piece of cake.

Xander Olivieri August 19th, 2012 8:35 PM

You can do it Hihihiroshi~ Claim all da metals~

What is the hardest medal you had to get so far?

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ August 20th, 2012 6:53 AM

I have no intention of completing these medals, because a number of the requirements are utterly ridiculous. I am not playing the minigames, I am not going to torture myself with the world tournament, and I am certainly not going to even attempt to beat the Elite Four with one Pokemon, just so I can "earn" a medal. Overall, it's a rather pointless addition. I don't know if it's supposed to motivate me to actually do some of these absurd things in the game, but sorry, mission failed.

Overall it feels like a forced attempt to pad the length of the game.

Dusk White August 21st, 2012 1:56 PM

I got a medal case. I almost got a medal.

o Pikachu o August 27th, 2012 1:20 PM

I can't wait for this. I'm gonna collect all of them even though it'll take me forever to do because some are kind of hard to get. I mean look at the medal Rush Hour : Pass by 1,000 people using the C-Gear...

In LeafGreen I have at least 40 hours just doing nothing, so I think this is to keep the after-game a tad bit more interesting, because believe me, many people mess around in the post-game for no reason really.

For example, after beating the E4 enough times you'll take it on yourself to beat them with only one Pokémon. This is just making it more justifiable why the hell you do that.

Of course, you may not do it, but believe me many people do.

I had a sort of "internal" medal system going already, so this is just putting that on paper.

tl;dr not padding, enhancing.

Actually, his house is in Floccesy Town/Sangi Town, a.k.a. the first town you visit outside of Aspertia City ^^;

Anyways, I think it's a good, innovative way to keep people into the games~ I'm not gonna purposely try getting medals until I get the English copies because I can't fully understand Japanese, but they're definitely something that I'll likely enjoy doing.

darkpokeball August 29th, 2012 4:52 PM

A-achivements? In Pokemon games?
No. I like achievements in some games, but I usually never get them. (The only game that I got all achievements in is ATLA: The Burning Earth...and there were 5. And they were meant for little kids. Like, five-year olds.) It also sucks because my highly competitive brother(who can't stand me beating him*cough* disconnects *cough*)will end up trying to get them all just to tick me off.

Achievements are kind of demotivational to me, so...I'm going to try to AVOID getting medals. That seems like a challenge in itself, referring to the easier ones.

Xander Olivieri August 29th, 2012 5:15 PM

You really can't avoid them. Most are recieved by random things like take x amount of steps. Beat So and so. Stuff like that. You CAN however not collect them as to get them you have to talk to the old man in the Pokemon Center that stands near Nurse Joy.

ThisOrTheApocalypse August 29th, 2012 7:28 PM

I am definitely looking forward to this feature. I think this will give some of us(who get completely bored after the E4) something to continue onto doing, rather than starting over multiple times.

Twilight-kun September 2nd, 2012 8:43 PM

...Time to get an Action Replay!

SouKoLian9102 September 2nd, 2012 10:40 PM

Achievements. Achievements. Lets all just take a moment to see how much Pokemon has improved over the years. OMG I can't breathe because of my feels ;A;
These look so fun to get. Seriously, as soon as I finish the story mode of a game, I try to finish all the achievements.
Looks like my overachiever mode has been activated. Can't wait 'till October.

chella182 September 3rd, 2012 3:33 AM

Sounds interesting for sure! I can't really say how much I'll like it until I play the game, but for now, I really am liking the sound of it. The main reason achievements are so popular in 360 games is that they add an element of re-playability or extended playability to a game once you've completed the main storyline. I mean, I know Pokémon games usually have some sort of story post-game, but not that much (aside from GSC/HGSS, whose post-game was massive). I think it'll give you a reason to continue playing the game aside from trying to complete your dex.
