1) Spearow/Fearow or Pidgey/Pideotto/Pidgeot? Why?
2) Which generation had the best Flying-Types?
3) Who's your favourite Flying-type Gym Leader: Falkner, Winona or Skyla? Why? If they had to battle each other, who would be the best?
4) Which of the starter bird lines is your favourite and why?

5) Did anyone else notice that the size of Birds like Pidgeot and Fearow vary dramatically between the games and anime? Like in Colosseum, I had both of those and they were like half my height but in the anime (from what I remember of it) These birds could swoop down and pick up Ash easily. Thoughts?
6) Your best and worst experiences with Birds in battle, both metagame and competitive?

Spearow/Fearow or Pidgey/Pideotto/Pidgeot? Why?

Though I do like Spearow's aggressive nature, the Pidgey line overshines that by so much. I've pretty much always loved Pidgey, ever since the first playthrough of Blue that I actually remember. It was the first Pokémon that I ever caught and fully raised apart from my starter, and just that gave me so many reasons to love. Though it may not be that strong in comparison to the other starter birds, I've always love it for its simple yet stunning design, as well as the moves it learn. This may all be because my nostalgia goggles are set a bit too tight, though I'm sure I'm not the only Pokéfan who has taken a nostalgia filled liking to Pidgey.

Spearow on the other hand, apart from liking its concept, I don't really like it at all. I just never found it as a Pokémon I'd ever like to be part of my main team, and thus I've never really trained one. I do remember that I once borrowed my Leaf Green out to a friend, and then he ended up wasting my Master Ball on a Fearow because someone told him it was a fourth bird to the legendary trio. Oh believe me I was mad, though yeah. The Spearow line has never been anything I've liked, and I probably never will.

Topic: Pidgey family vs Spearow family
Pidgey family, I've really only used the Pidgey family, never really focused on the Spearow family. I think Pidgeot is a lot easier to train and battle with than Fearow, though both of their designs are just really good.

Spearow/Fearow or Pidgey/Pideotto/Pidgeot? Why?
I've used Pidgeot in my team several times... I've never used a Fearow! I dunno, Fearow looks okay but it isn't for me. It's kinda thin and not majestic enough to carry my butt around in the sky. :(

Which Generation has the best Flying-Types?
Arghhh can't decide if I love the Kanto bird trio or Lugia&Ho-oh more... But then there's Staraptor, Togekiss, Gliscor, Yanmega, and Skymin in Sinnoh! GUH.

Olli August 1st, 2012 9:06 AM

Which Generation has the best Flying-Types?

Well it has taken kind of a turn over the generations, so it's kinda hard to say. I personally prefer second generation due to Ho-oh, Lugia and Skarmory, though looking at the journey, I think the fourth generation has the best by far. Pokémon like Staraptor and Drifblim whose pre-evolutions you could get pretty early in the game, are both pretty strong, Staraptor being the best starter bird by far, and they would both serve as great Flying types for your team, as well as with all the other strong Flying type Pokémon you can find across the game. So with all that, I'd probably have to say Sinnoh, since Johto just didn't have enough, and the other generations weren't really anything notable to me.

Spearow/Fearow or Pidgey/Pideotto/Pidgeot? Why?
I've gotta be honest, I'm more of a Fearow person...Now hear me out, when I first started playing way back in the days of Red and Blue in 1998 I was wholly a Pidgey kinda guy. Never even touched a Spearow except to trade it to that guy in Vermillion City for Farfetch'd's pokedex data. However, as the years have gone by...I've sort of switched over into the other camp. As far as the beginner birds go, Fearow is a beast! It's super fast and has awesome attack...plus Pidgeot NEVER gets a move that Fearow can't learn as powerful as Drill Peck. Sorry, but points go to Fearow. Love ya Pidgey....just not as much :P

Which Generation has the best Flying-Types?
Once again, I'm gonna be the odd man out here and say Gen V...I'm sorry, but there are some cool flying types in Gen V. When I first saw the pokemon designs for 5th gen, I had the sane typical reaction as the majority of pokemon fans (they have since grown on me, however). But, I never once doubted or scorned the designs of any of the flying types. Woobat is unbelievably adorable, Braivary is awesome, Swanna's so elegant, and Archeops is my new favorite pokemon of all time! (I'm a dinosaur fanatic...so...). In second place, though, I do have to give my respect to Gen 1...the birds in that game are so iconic and synonymous with the franchise as a whole.

The first generation. It has the legendary bird trio, Pidgey's and Spearow's family, the incredible Gyarados... All my favourite flying Pokémon are from the first gen !

Who's your favourite Flying-type Gym Leader: Falkner, Winona or Skyla? Why? If they had to battle each other, who would be the best?

Snowdrop August 19th, 2012 9:45 AM

Add-diddly-added! I've never played against Winona. Let's check out who is on her team...

Okay, I'm going with Winona. Falkner was weaker than a dead gnat. Skyla might put up a good fight against her though. Overall I think Winona's team would win in the end.

megamasher3 August 19th, 2012 12:03 PM

Wow, that's a good question...Team wise, I'm gonna have to go with Winona. She has a really good spread...plus, I'm a huge fan of Tropius. However, I have always thought Falkner was really cool. I remember as a kid always wishing that there was a flying type gymleader (and when playing pokemon with my elementary school friends I often pretended to be one, lol), so having the first gym leader of GSC being a flying type user was pretty darn awesome. Plus I love his storyline, always wanting to live up to his father's image. And his team does get better in the HGSS post game...so there ya go. Falkner for Stlye, Winona for Substance (sorry Skyla :()

Mentalii August 20th, 2012 5:20 AM

Who's your favourite Flying-type Gym Leader: Falkner, Winona or Skyla? Why? If they had to battle each other, who would be the best?

Falkner all the way ! He's one of the cutest gym leader to my mind. There are very beautiful fanarts of him. Then I love his personnality in the manga. He's an interesting character. And, anyway I particularly like Johto Gym Leaders.
However, I believe the strongest would be Winona. I think Skyla's team pretty weak, and in the game she was the easiest for me to beat out of the three. And, if they had to battle each other with their World Tournament's team, Winona would win to my mind. Her team's seems to be the toughest.

Time for yet another new topic!

Competitively, which Flying-Type has served you the best and which one has served you the worst?

Mentalii September 3rd, 2012 6:58 AM

Competitively, which Flying-Type has served you the best and which one has served you the worst?

Zapdos was the most useful flying-type competitively. Each time I'm building a strategy team, I choose it. I love its double type, the best combination that could have a flying type to my mind.
Then, the one that served me the worst was Noctowl. I had the memory of a strong flying type from Silver version, but in Soul Silver it was very weak. Well, I didn't expect it to be the best neither, but I didn't think it would be that bad for strategy :/ Despite this fact, it remains one of my favourite flying type Pokémon anyway, nostalgia thinks for me :P

Snowdrop September 3rd, 2012 7:01 AM

I don't fight competitively, so within the metagames I'd say Salamance was actually both my best and worst fighter for Gale of Darkness. She could destroy opponents with her monstrous attack stat, but if there was an Ice Type on the other team... bam. Gone in a second. I should've withdrawn her more :<

megamasher3 September 10th, 2012 1:48 PM

Well I dabble in the competitive curcuit (emphasis on dabble), however I don't really use flying types when I compete...(I usually go for weather strategies and flying types don't do so well in those, outside of legendaries, and I don't like to compete with them). However, in game I'd say the bird that benefited me the best would have to be a toss up between Zapdos (thanks Mentalii lol) and Archeops. Zapdos's typing is killer, and helped me sweep against many an elite 4 member in RYB and GSC. Archeops, however, has done the same for me in the Gen 5 games (so long as I never let it get below half health, but with its speed and attack power that was never really a problem).

Hey, snowy, I got an idea...why don't we have a little contest (just for fun). I'm working on a fan game, and while Im not a really great artist, I do like having to design my own pokemon...Why don't we see who can come up with the best fan made flying type pokemon? (compelte with pokedex entry for good measure, lol). Just an idea. We don't have to. :P

Olli September 17th, 2012 12:51 PM

Who's your favourite Flying-type Gym Leader: Falkner, Winona or Skyla?

The answer to this one is pretty clear :p For me it's definitely Falkner, mostly because he's the only Flying type gym leader I really recall battling, and in my early days, having trouble with. I've played the third generation games, but I had honestly forgotten all about Winona when I replayed the games a little while ago, and I didn't think there actually were any other Flying type trainers than Falkner and Skyla. Skyla I can't say much about though, since I've never played B/W, and her character in the anime didn't really help her in the case, so it's definitely not her. It all goes down to Falkner anyway, as the second generation games were my favourite, I've always loved Falkner due to BIIIIIRDS, and he's a pretty cool gym leader in general.

Spearow/Fearow or Pidgey/Pidgeotto/Pidgeot and why? Fearow, Fearow's attack is good and has decent speed and learns the move Drill Peck which is an awesome move. For some reason I just like it's design more over the other 4 Pokemon. I like Pidgeot too but Fearow gets the win this time.

I almost forgot..
Who is your favorite Flying Gym Leader? I like Falkner because HG/SS is my favorite Pokemon games because Crystal was my first ever Pokemon game.

Which games has the best flying types? IMO, Pokemon HG/SS. In this game you can get Hoothoot very early in the game which later evolves into a Noctowl and shares 2 types Flying and Psychic. It's also got Pidgey eary on in the game as well. Scyther (if you classify him as Flying) is also in the game fairl early, and don't forget about Skarmory which is also Steel type.

Who is your favorite Flying Gym Leader?
I guess it would be Falkner, not just because I think he looks cool. My first game was Gold, so he was the first ever Gym Leader I fought. And he has an awesome team when you challenge him for a battle in Saffron in HG/SS.

Which games has the best flying types? I can't really decide. The first gen had the 3 legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres (who are awesome!). Second Gen had Murkrow and Skarmory and the epic Ho-oh and Lugia. Third gen was alright with Swellow, and the unique Altaria who looked like a bird but was a dragon type. Fourth gen has Staraptor and Honchkrow, who were awesome with power. And fifth gen has Braviary, who I just simply love.
But I guess if I were to pick a generation, I'd have to say 2nd gen. Ho-oh looks so amazing!

Avishka September 18th, 2012 12:24 AM

Welcome to the club,Mr. Rhymez and Star!!!

Who's your favourite Flying-type Gym Leader: Falkner, Winona or Skyla?
Winona all the way! She has the best design for a flying gym leader. Winona is also the most formidable, although Falkner wasn't soo bad. Winona gives out one of my favorite flying type move aerial ace. That Altaria is a monster and even her Skarmory can put up quite a fight and she uses a quite unique team that is very appropiate for that stage of the game. Her Skarmory was a demon, Altaria didn't lag behind and her remaining Pokémon were on par with the difficulty of what the others have to offer.

Psystar63 September 18th, 2012 1:21 AM

Thanks Avishka!

I do like Winona's design too. I planned to cosplay as her one day. Yeah, her team was a strong one, especially with them knowing aerial ace. Skarmory was hard even with my Blaziken, and its hard to take on Altaria without any ice moves to back you up. But I think I took on her Altaria with my own Altaria and just barely made it.

ShinyUmbreon189 September 21st, 2012 5:57 PM

It looks like Snowdrop isn't keeping track of the club? I can't say Winona was easy because she's very hard to beat. She's hard to beat when she puts out her Altaria and you have nothing thats effective to it which causes lots of problems. She's for sure the hardest Flying Gym leader I've faced. I never beat Black or White so I can't say anything about Skyla.

Winona was tough because of her Skarmory and Altaria. I even had some trouble with her Swellow and Aerial Ace. Her team combines speed with defence, as well as unique type combinations which can throw you off at first. I had to seriously level grind to beat her.

Skyla was really easy for me, but that's cause I had a well-trained Zebstrika. It's speed and power meant that I could pretty much knock out all of her Pokemon in one or two hits, especially Swanna.

Answer to the topic (you only have to answer one): My fave starter bird line is the Starly line cos it has good stats (especially Attack and Speed) and Staraptor learns Close Combat, allowing it to hit some types super-effectively that would normally put Flying-types at a disadvantage. It also often makes its way onto my 4th Gen teams due to this.

Thanks for that! I was getting kinda worried that this club might end up dying.

Anyway, to answering the current topic. Definitely Starly/Staravia/Staraptor, followed by Taillow/Swellow. Staraptor has the strongest attack base stat out of the starter bird evolutions (and 120 base is pretty good for a starter bird). With Brave Bird and Close Combat, it's a real force to be reckoned with. It's movepool is awesome, and it's ability is Intimidate, which is very useful. Also, Starly can be found very early in the game (can pretty much be the first Pokemon you catch).
Swellow has impressive speed, but it's base attack is only 85. Still, that makes it slightly stronger than Pidgeot.

DESPERATELY in need of a topic change, yes indeed! I'll make two more topics.

Like in Colosseum, I had both of those and they were like half my height but in the anime (from what I remember of it) These birds could swoop down and pick up Ash easily. Thoughts?

Psystar63 October 27th, 2012 1:07 PM

Ok, it's been kinda inactive around here lately.

Anyway, I think I'll be the first to answer one of Snowdrop's topics.

Your best and worst experiences with Birds in battle, both metagame and competitive?

Best experience: My Braviary in White 2. I've been wanting a Braviary ever since I first heard about Gen 5, so I was really happy when I finally got one in White 2. And I must say, it is one powerhouse of a bird. It helped me take out the E4 and the Champ with ease, and it's also helped me out in the Battle Subway and PWT tournaments. It's a true terror now that it knows Thrash :D

Worst experience: Getting continuously knocked out by Staraptor in the Battle Castle in Platnium/HeartGold.
I always do well in the Battle Castle, until I get up to challenging Darach and his Staraptor. For a starter bird, it's got good speed and attack. Plus I think it's also holding a King's Rock, so most of the time my Pokemon end up flinching because of it's attacks. It almost nearly knocks out my Pokemon with Return. Argh...
In the end I managed to finally knock it out by using Zapdos on my team :D

Welcome to the club Seraphimon-sama! I shall add you to the list in a bit.

As the new owner of The Point Above the Clouds, I need to think of some ideas of how to get this club full of activity lately. If anyone has any ideas of what sort of events they'd like to see happen here, perhaps a competition of sorts or a quiz, then please PM me.

Also, I think I should also start recruiting for a co-owner... I'll probably need some help with running a club :) If anyone would like to volunteer, just say so!

Much appreciated! :D

i would like to volunteer :) :) :)

Nickname: Umbr30n (My Username and Nickname is the same).
Favorite Pokemon: Ho-Oh!
Favorite Move: Aeroblast!
Partner Pokemon and Pokemon's name: Ho-Oh (Sky)
Answer to the topic (you only have to answer one): (Which Generation had the best Flying-Types?) Generation II because it introduced the literal MEGAS. Lugia and Ho-Oh, both very strong Flying-Types, both have great Move-Pools! Lugia, capable of learning it's exclusive move Aeroblast, makes it a very strong Pokemon any Pokemon can fear, Legendary or not! Ho-Oh, it sweeps and stalls all opponent Pokemon with an amazing Attack, using any all-out attack that would be hard to survive.
Would you like to be notified when new features, games, and competitions are added to the club? No thanks.

And a warm welcome to the club Umbr30n. I shall add you to the members list in a sec! Ho-Oh is a great choice for a partner BTW. And I agree that Gen 2 had some really amazing Flying-types. Plus it's the only generation where Flying-types were the main Legendaries.

Thank you!

Which of the starter bird lines is your favourite, and why?

Starly line because it's just all around WIN, and when it learns Close Combat, OMG BIRD DOES KUNG FU! Crane must be aware of this (Kung Fu Panda reference)... So anyway, Close Combat is a great move, but just really puts you in a BIGGER disadvantage (Because it lowers the User's Defenses) when it doesn't faint Rock or Steel-Types because of their great Defenses. Also, Staraptor may be a little risky, but it also learns Brave Bird, Final Gambit, Giga Impact AND Steel Wing. In my opinion it also fits in Falkner's kind of style better than the Pidgey Line (Pun not intended). Plus it evolves into it's final evolution a bit early compared to the others, which makes it a win-win choice (Unless you're not in Stupid Sinnoh, but if you're not in Stupid Sinnoh you won't have a bird like Crane Kung Fu Bird). YOU ONLY GET IT EARLY IN STUPID SINNOH.

Just catching up with Topics. As for the newest one, I don't have any big experiences that actually determine worst or best about Flying-Types, that's why I'm not really answering the Topic.

Thanks for taking over for me. Responsibility is not my strong point and I don't come here nearly as often. Good luck with the club, dude!

Let's start a new topic :
Which flying type has the best shiny sprite?

No problem! I'll try my best to keep this club going! :D

Now, the new topic:

I absolutely LOVE Charizard's shiny sprite!!! It look's so freakin' awesome with those deep-red wings... I spent months trying to breed a shiny Charmander, as well as SRing on my LeafGreen for who knows how long...
Before Hydreigon came around, it was the closest thing I could get to having a black dragon, since I didn't really feel like restarting my Ruby to try and SR for a shiny Rayquaza.

Rayquaza has an awesome 'black dragon' sprite too! That yellow on it kinda reminds me of an Umbreon.

http://sprites.pokecheck.org/s/384.gif

Lugia and Ho-Oh have great shiny sprites as well. I wish I had the patience to SR for them... Ahhh, I adore shiny Ho-oh's wings....

Random thing, but I noticed that a lot of shinies in Gen 2 are pink... Probably because of original GameBoy colours. But that's getting off topic! :P

Welcome SummerSkies! Oh, I love that adorable little budgie in your av! I used to have a lot of budgies, but sadly many of them have since died of old age. My very first pet was a lovely blue budgie I named Lucy.

I like bird Pokemon too. And Staraptor's and Braviary's shiny sprites are cool! That blue looks so good on Braviary, and I like that little touch of light blue on Staraptor's comb. I haven't been fortunate enough to run into a shiny Braviary or Staraptor. But I did encounter a shiny Vullaby on my Black game. If I had White instead of Black, that could've been a shiny Rufflet...

I'd also like to add to my answer of why Winona is the toughest Flying-type Gym Leader.
Ok, so I've been taking the World Leaders Tournamentin the PWT in White, and I've fought against Faulkner, Winona and Skyla in Rotation Battles.
And my gosh, Winona was just as tough as I remember, even tougher. I took care of her Altaria, Sigilyph and Honchkrow easily thanks to my Hydreigon, Haxorus and Excadrill. But her Gyarados almost completely wiped me out. It has the moves Substitute, Dragon Dance, Ice Fang and Waterfall, and is holding Leftovers. She decided to just spam Ice Fang on me, which took out my Dragons. Waterfall took out my Volcarona, so I was just left with Excadrill. But rather than using Waterfall on my Excadrill, she just went ahead and spammed Ice Fang again. I thought that that would be OK at first, until Ice Fang kept making Excadrill flinch.
Gyarados was down at a third HP thanks to my Hax (Her Gyarados was female, and my Haxorus, despite its insane attack stat, has the ability Rivalry), so all I needed was one Rock Slide to finish her off. But Excadrill would not stop flinching!
Excadrill was on the verge of fainting when Rock Slide finally made it though and KO'd her Gyarados...
That was one epic (and tough) battle :)

Who else here has gone up against Faulkner, Winona or Skyla in the PWT?

it time for a new topic
Which flying Pokemon's shins sprite should be recolored?

CourageHound November 30th, 2012 4:00 PM

Username: CourageHound

Favorite Pokemon: Gliscor, Staraptor, and Crobat are very feirce flying types
Favorite Move: Brave Bird
Partner Pokemon and Pokemon's name: Stinglash the Gliscor
Answer to the topic: Who's your favourite Flying-type Gym Leader: Falkner, Winona or Skyla?
My answer is Skyla. She seemed to have the most personality of the three flying gym leaders. However I think the Leader who was most formidable in battle was Winona
Would you like to be notified when new features, games, and competitions are added to the club? YES~

I love Flying type Pokemon. The best Pokemon in my opinion is Lugia, and my favorite character in Pokemon would have to be Falkner.
