Hello PokéCommunity, I am shinyabsol1. I started hacking a couple of years ago, and since then it has been a goal of mine to create a Pokémon hack. I could have slapped something together a long time ago and put it on here, but instead I decided to do a lot of learning first. So I have spent much time over the past few years getting experience in many different areas of Pokémon ROM hacking. There were struggles at times, but also many successes. Now, I am ready to present to you the beginning stages of my hack (which, at the moment, truly conveys only the tip of the iceberg of what I plan to do)!


Story:

Welcome to Somia: a treacherous yet beautiful land far from all other Pokémon regions. Topical coastline alongside pristine waters and countless isles surround an untamed interior filled with forests that rise up to the regions Heavens mountain range at its center. But don’t let the peaceful façade fool you. The region hides a secret that will thrust you into the midst of doings predicted long ago by the oracles of Somia. A radical dream researching team, known as CYPRUS, threaten the security of mind and body alike as they search for “dream cores”, the power behind our dreams. Should they succeed in their attempt to gain the power of dreams, nobody is safe from darkness and nightmares. But getting the cores is not simple, and not all cores are alike in power…it will take time and daring penetration into dreams in order to claim these prizes.

What is your role in the fate of the region? Will CYPRUS be able to collect the power of dreams? And just what IS their motive? Find out when you play Pokémon: DarkJasper Version

Known Bugs:
Spoiler:
red=severe
orange=unfixable (to my knowledge) but doesn't affect gameplay
green=fixable (and is being fixed)
  • Clicking noise on some water tiles around dive areas
  • Glitchy bars occasionally appear on first textbox (before Oak intro)
  • In certain situations, trainers that are clicked on will not face the player
  • Reflection appears on some water tiles for no reason?
  • Reflection appears on a tree tile for an unknown reason
  • World map doesn't always display your location correctly...

Thank you. I tried to make the tiles/palettes fit well together. As for the world map, it is done! I'll upload a screenshot when it is inserted.

Thanks. The reason there are no screenshots of events is because I have not started scripting yet. I plan to start today/the next few days.

My only issue lies in this screenshot, the path to be specific. The edges of the path does not blend with the grass (that darky brown bit) when in fact it should at least be the same colour as the grass, as this looks wrong.

I noticed that too a while ago, but forgot to change it. Thanks for reminding me! I'll get it done.

Progress Report!

I was having some trouble with the battle background, but I got a solution for my problem. With that issue out of the way, I should be able to provide screenshots of the battle background, hero overworld, and hero battle sprites by sometime tomorrow!

I was also messing around with the palettes of various battle screen related things, so those color changes are just a draft. What do you guys think of them?

small Update!

I updated the OP to list a few more features that I plan to have in this hack. And also, I have finished inserting the world map, so I will be uploading a screenshot of that later today when I get around to it.

Wow. Just wow.

We've finally got another hack with great graphics thus far, in progress on Pokécommunity..
So, in case you've not noticed, the graphics I see in this hack are so goodly done I've no complaints about them.

The story makes me think that

Darkrai may play part in the story
somewhere, which is good, he's a little underloved anyway.

Yes, it's my decision, I'm just asking for the input of others if they have any...
...and the title 'Pokemon Jasper' was not supposed to fit with the plot, it was just a color that I chose.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll consider them, and I will notify you when I decide (don't know how long that will be). And it would be nice if you could do the text for me! I already know how to insert titlescreens, so I don't think that I'll need help with that, but getting the text to look good is sort of a weakness in my hacking skills :)

I believe that that name is already taken. Also, If I do decide to change the name it will (in all probability) NOT be a color/material, but rather something along the lines of some of the suggestions that SkyIsDarkBlue made on the previous page.

Why didn't i post on this ?????? It's an awesome hack really good tiles,the features are also great ( like having dive and rock climb in fire red ) and the story is simple yet good to make someone play it.I really like it and im sure a lot of effort is put to make it like this.
What didn't see was a release .Will you release it when it's completed ?
For the name change you could rename it to pokemon aquamarine version ( if its not taken ) or pokemon water blue version i can't think anything else :P
For the battle textbox ( with the commands ) you could use orange and darker blue because light blue is kinda startling...
Anyways if you continue like that it will turn out great ! keep it up ;)

Thanks for the feedback. I too was thinking that the colors of the textbox are a bit startling, so I probably will dull them down a bit.

As for a release, I do plan on there being a beta somewhat soon (perhaps as early as the end of September), with more to follow after that. I'll add a beta progress section to the first post sometime.

This is quite a good looking hack. I don't often hang around the hacking section on this forum, but this happens to have caught my interest. I'll be sure to drop in every so often to see how things are going.

If you're thinking of putting in some Gen4/5 Pokemon I would thoroughly suggest adding the Musharna line or the Hypno line. After all, what better Pokemon to have in a story involving dreams than ones known for their dream-related powers?

I don't think it's the name.It's got to be that members who are around rom hacking section are intrested for the moment in other hacks like dark rising ,Sky line ash gray and so on.Many of the progressing hacks have great potential ( including this of course ) Keep trying and your effort will pay off sometime later don't worry ;)

I would agree. Members are more focused on hacks that have betas they can play.

My only problem so far with the update that hasn't been mentioned is this. I love the background of the cave, but that text box colour just seems to clash a bit to me. Seems too bright for the cave. Sure, it works elsewhere, but not in that cave scenario. That's me really being picky though I guess.

lol, my typing kind of sucks, and without spell check in the notepad document I was working in, I missed these errors. Although I could have sworn that I fixed the prophecy mistake...

The colors seemed a bit "clashy" to me too at first, but the longer I looked at it, the more I didn't mind it. The colors don't clash so much with the grass bb, and I like it when combined with that, so I'll probably leave it alone.

Well, I haven't had much success finding a new title that I like, so for now I am going to stick with Jasper Version as the title. If I can come up with something else that I like, I'll switch it, but right now Jasper is in (thanks for the suggestions, those who gave some).

I've been working on implementing dive. Dive now functions for when you want to go underwater, and will soon support emerging from underwater.

Nice stuff. I'm quite interested in the fact you were able to get dive to work in fire red, is that a full animation or just a warp? Lastly did you make your own world map and trainer sprite? They look well done :)

The dive script works by warping. It takes the player's X/Y coordinates, and warps them to that location on an underwater map (sounds simple, but there is a ton of other stuff that goes into getting it to work properly).

In the "upper world", the script will take the x/y coordinates of the player and warp the player accordingly to an underwater map. The same is true for the underwater map. So the coordinates of where you can dive from on one map must match up with the coordinates of where you can resurface from underwater on another map.

I have made use of one of JPAN's specials to make it work properly. Special 0x7F - get tile attribute. Hard to explain, but by checking whether or not a certain tile has water encounter potential I can make it work. I should also mention that the dive/emerge script is activated using JPAN's behavior byte hack.

While I did do all of the work figuring out how to get it to function properly, some credit for the way dive works should go to Gamefreak (for the base dive script that saved me a bunch of time) and to JPAN (for the special that allows this to work). Just remember that :)

Also, (for anyone who has seen the dive video), you will have noticed that there are tiles that do nothing when "A" is pressed on them, yet they still make the clicking noise. It is a minor bug that I cannot fix (except, perhaps, with ASM --- which I don't know).

Also, in my opinion, I think you should stick with just 1 rival or 2, I fine it annoying when some hacks have 5.

Thanks! I really want to finish this project, but people will have to be patient. Status Update:

My computer is finally fixed after several weeks of problems, so I will be getting back to working on this again! I'm still pretty busy with other stuff in life, though, so don't expect any update too soon. Just know that this hack will be worked on more than it has in the past few weeks.

Ok, I've decided that I'm going to focus on mapping and inserting tiles until I get them to where they need to be for the first beta. I've been all over the place in what I've been working on, and that has really slowed things down. So I'm going to get these things completed, and then start seriously scripting. You know, I was just reading this the other day and was sad that the thread was closed! I'm very happy there is new progress :) Everything is outstandingly beautiful!

OMG OMG OMG Welcome back, SA1 :) I love that mart -***- PC thingy! It's really cool :) But sad thing is if ur computer hadn't crashed back then, you would have been able to create a beta and perhaps enter HotQ :( Anyways, good luck!!!

the tiles are really nice, lets just hope your scripting goes in well with them.
the hero overworld is nice, do you have a sprite for it yet?

Maybe the next HotQ :) We'll see how progress goes. I wont be giving up on this anytime soon, that's for sure!

Tiles/palettes are 99% done for beta 1 (unless I think of a bunch more that I want to add), and mapping is moving more quickly as well. Hopefully I will have another update soon before I start scripting for real!

Also, I forgot to mention that I updated the screenshots on the OP to be current (a few palette changes and redone maps over the past month).

I have come to a point in my progress where I could use a bit of help, if anyone is interested.

I want to start inserting some music, but that's not really one of my strengths in ROM hacking. I can assemble the music into the game fine with sappy, but I find getting it to sound good difficult. I've been messing around with it for a few days now, and with all the constraints/my lack of complete understanding I simply cannot get it to work.

So if there is anyone who would like to help (either to perhaps do it for me, or, preferably, help me to understand how to do it), send me a PM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated (and you would be credited for your help, of course)!

It seems that not a whole lot of people know lots about music inserting...its not easy. Anyways, I'll keep on trying to figure out how to solve the problem I'm having even if nobody can help...
