What is your 'excuse' to buy BW2?
Despite Pokemon becoming a pastime for people outside of Japan, from little children to old creepy men, Pokemon is still regarded as a game you shouldn't buy unless you're under the age of 12 or you just lack friends that would normally draw private parts on your face if you ever pass out during a party.
So when the day BW2 comes out in English. Would you become a man with over 9000 testosterone and face the cashier and say, "Can I buy Pokemon White 2?", or will you wear your antisocial hoodie, pull the strings on the hoodie until you look like Kenny from South Park, and confront the cashier with a Post-it on your palm saying "Can I buy that game called Pokemon Black 2?". I'm interested to hear yours. |
I work in retail, I'm the leisure manager which involves the home entertainment department, so i generally open the boxes of games that are a new release and see if i want them, but if I'm off on the day it comes in i just go to the desk and get it.
|
In my opinion, the reason Pokemon has a 'kids label' attached to it because of the anime. Nintendo didn't say 'we are going to make a game from this show', they allowed 4kids to create a show from the game that would entertain kids - which doesn't necessarily reflect the content of the game. I can still remember Thunderbolt affecting Ground-types right back to Ash's Pikachu vs Brock's Onyx back in the original series.
If you play the game competitively, you realize that the game mechanics are intricate and complex that (no offence to people who may read this), kids might not understand. Although in this particular instance I've bought it online as it was cheaper and I've finally got used to online shopping, in previous cases (such as Gen IV) I've happily walked into a shop and as the OP put it, become a man with over 9000 testosterone and bought Pokemon games where the public can recognize me. |
Why should I be ashamed to buy a pokemon game...Tbh it should be a 13 and up , with all the mechanics/strategies...
You really think a 12 and under kid is gonna beat some guys on RM with an un-prepared team? Or rng a shiny , flawless or shiny and flawless poke? It takes patience , determination and good comprehension to understand rng , it ain't easy And it takes time to make that battle-team a winner ; with understanding each and every opponent's battle-style/strategy , type advantage/disadvantages , moves to use , and stats to give that upper-edge in battle when you need it most . Pokemon ain't a kids game , get your facts right or face my groudon's 2094.4 lbs. body! ~ Jay |

I'll just face the cashier like any other normal person and pay up. I don't need an excuse to buy B/W2
|
I'll go to Best Buy probably and go get the game and take it to the cash register. Then, I will pay with it using my debit card and smile at the cashier before leaving, saying thank you, have a nice day in the process.
Or, same thing at GameStop. |
Grow up. The only people that think playing Pokemon is something you need to be ashamed of are edgy teenagers, not adults. After reaching a certain age people generally don't care about what you like and buy. I'm a collage student right now, and many people will actually consider it pretty cool that you play such a nostalgic series.

Highlighted: Ooo...abit racist no? xD j/k I'm 16 and I don't really care what they put it on , put me in a pikachu costume and I'll wear it to a busy wal-mart and yell..." THIS IS A MAN'S SUIT!" |
What Mac said.
And deal with it, everyone (at least in the Bay Area) either thinks Pokemon is cool or doesn't know about it. |
Unless I saw someone I knew in the Gamestop I wouldn't care, I'd just quickly walk in find the game and get out. It's not really a big deal playing Pokemon.
|
Pft. I'm not ashamed to buy Pokemon games. I go straight to the cashier and tell them what I want. There's nothing wrong with it.
|
Might order it online.
Although really I don't have an excuse, plus why should I be ashamed to a stranger at the cashier which I will most likely never see again in my life? I never see my friends at the GameStop I go to anyways. |
I would walk into gamestop, and in a loud voice, Say "I'm here for Pokemon Black 2" and proudly wait for my game :D
|
I'm not ashamed that I will buy both Black 2 and White 2 when they are first released. Why would I be if I'm not ashamed to go and buy Pokémon plushies?
Besides, I work on checkouts, we don't really care if a 17 year old comes in and buys a Pokémon game. |
I work at Toys R Us and have two copies on reserve already XD When they come out I'll just move them behind my register and check them out when my shift ends~
Also majority of the people I've sold the games to are 15+ so I dunno where that Its for Children 12 and under stuff came from XD |
Last time I picked up a pokemon game I got to flurt with the cashier, ended up getting her number lol Maybe it'll happen again?
|
I grow balls and buy the games like I have for nearly ten years. It's not a big deal. I don't need an excuse or someone to use my money to get it for me. Most people that play Pokemon seem to be older, like Xander mentioned, so...who gives a flip flop?
|
Someone else will probably buy it for me, but not because I'm ashamed, because it's right around my birthday so I'm going to ask for it instead of anything else. But most likely it'll be my boyfriend who gets it, and I'll be with him. Neither of us have any problem asking for a Pokemon game, and the employees really don't care.
|
I see everyone I know when I go into town so I'll be doing what I do best; staying at home and ordering stuff from play. n_____n
|
I don't have much of an excuse to buy B2/W2 other than the fact I haven't played it before and love its new features. I'd just swipe the games off the shelf and pay the money.
|
I'm not going to really need an excuse if I'm going to pick up a game, I'll either take it off the shelf or ask for a copy, then pay for it and be on my way. Just like I do with any other game that I pick up.
|
...maybe where you come from. Around here, people play Pokémon openly in college during class.
My excuse to buying B2W2 is because I want it. |
Quote:
|
I'm not worried cause I'll be back at Uni by the time it comes out and people there are pretty accepting of it - plus, there'll be other people there my age as well if it's just coming out which makes it easier :)
|
I'm not ashamed.
But if I had to pick an excuse, it would be that I want more box space, and to be able to get all the new event Pokemon that came with it. Plus obviously it's still fun (I'm 20 and I know that isn't close to old yet lol). |
I am ashamed to talk about Pokemon, when i am out and about.
|
It's only weird, if you think too much about it..
I remember when B&W came out, there was a lot of us dudes waiting in line, all excited to get our game, and not really caring that it was in fact, a *pokémon* game, supposedly intended for little kids. So now I think about those dudes, and it's weird, but at the same time, I hope it happens again :D |
Quote:
QFT If you're afraid, preorder the game in an internet store or wherever they can deliver it to you. I am getting the game this way, only because it's the cheaper way in Poland. also, many shops don't get games on the release day, they have 2-3 days of delay. Cheapest and most reliable choice in my case. |
Not really gonna buy the game for myself (not interested), but for my brother. So I guess that's my "excuse".
Of course I won't really say it. I'll just go to my local store, grab the game for my brother and pay. If I do end up getting asked, I'll just say the truth, so it's not really an excuse. I do understand why people criticize others for playing them though. Not saying they're right but, have you ever really found a person older than 16 who plays them NOT for nostalgia or for being a long time fan? Pokemon isn't really appealing for adults unless you've been playing them since childhood. I don't see what's with all the jabs at these people when there's some truth to what they're saying after all. Like what you like and ignore them, there's nothing wrong with liking Pokemon or being ashamed about it, but don't be a hypocrite. |
I'll be walking into that shop proudly and buying it, probably telling whichever poor, unsuspecting cashier that I've been looking forward to its release for so long now. I'll also be going to the midnight release for it, if there's one in my area.
No use being ashamed of something I spend 60% of my time playing/watching these days. |
Please if I cared what people thought of me I would not be living the life I am living. I'll get the game dressed in cospaly and rub it in kids face at the mall. Ok maybe I won't be mean but I'm in no way ashamed. If people look at me weird I'll give them a camera so it will last longer.
Quote:
Uhhh you do know 4kids had ntohing to do with the anime being made right? They only dubbed it nothing more. I think it was Shopro that made it and aired it on TV Tokyo and about a year later we got it |
Go and buy it like I normally do. People who get afraid or self-consious about buying a specific game need to go see a doctor.
|
Walk in EB Games, pick up both Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, pay for it, walk out... I stopped caring about what people think long ago!
|
I would be doing what i had for the longest. Walk into the big mall where all the school kids hang, walk into gamestop(same floor and right next to food court) buy my game and walk out
The cashier shouldnt care because most likely, he/she is probably a GAMER and they probably play games that are kid-oriented too |
Why be ashamed?? I buy every thing I see pokemon related, games movies, figurines, and I let who ever it's coming from that it's for me and not to be ashamed on this part either, I am probably one of the oldest pokemon player, collector on this site, even when I go in to Gamestop, they let me know what is coming out in the pokemon dept.!!
|
There's a lot of people where I live so they'll probably go to the stores near the day of the release like me, and there aren't really a whole lot of boys let alone girls who play Pokemon near me (unless they're hiding? lol) so I'm sure they might look at me funny, but I'll just smile and walk away with my game.
|
My little brother will buy both games, one for me, so I'll have no problem with that.
However, if I was the only one home playing Pokémon, I guess I'd order it on the internet. It's not that I'm ashamed of playing Pokémon, but, unless someone asks me, I'd never tell I still play it. I confess that I fear what other people can think. That's a big mistake, I know, but here unfortunately people don't play Pokémon openly even at college, as I see it's the case in several other places. So, I'll be unassuming. |
I feel that pokemon is wonderful.. i don`t care if looks are given, i`ll by my darned -i don`t cuss- game.
|
Unfortunately there are jerks out there that make Pokemon appear to be only a kids game, and if you play Pokemon then you suck, when really there is no reason for you to suck because you play Pokemon, if anything I would think of Pokemon of a hipster's game! Anyways, I don't worry about those types of things, I've bought more embarrassing things, trust me xD The way I see, you are probably never going to see the guy (or girl) again in your life (unless you are a regular at GameStop) and if you do they probably wont recognize you, and even if they do, what are they gonna do, laugh at you and tell everyone you play Pokemon?! If that happens he should be havin a talk with his boss ;D
|
I am 13. I look about 11, so I need no excuse.
|
As many people say, there's no reason why being ashamed of buying a game. Moreover, the moment I was buying the game, the cashier told me "you're lucky, you're the first buying the new Pokémon game here. I'm going to get mine as soon as I finish my shift." However, I started buying games "onlinely" one year ago, because it's cheaper and I buy more than one game at once. Anyway I would buy the games if I wanted, nothing to be ashamed of.
|
I normally don't go out, even though I live in the city so I wouldn't really have this problem seeing how I'd get my mom to buy it seeing how she goes out to work. I guess if I had to get off the couch and buy the game I would be up front about it, anyone who tries to tease gets their face punched into tiny dust particles. >:)
|
Tbh, I'm kinda hoping to get the game for Christmas or my birthday or something, so then I won't have to buy it. 'Course, if I had to buy it, I'd go straight to the cashier and put the game on the counter, ask if I can buy it, and if they give me a wierd look cuz I'm 17 and shouldn't be buying Pokemon games, I'll just look at em and say "Dude, it's freakin Pokemon. You know you're jealous of me for getting it before you."
|
my excuse to buy it actually is so all dem kids, my friends and everybody else dont get ahead of me in gameplay and competitive battling this time around... tbh i haven't bought a pokemon game within a week of release since orginal pokemon silver for the gameboy color. i am definately looking forward to W2 so this time i get ahead of everyone!
|

nintindo headquarters is in japan so they get to see all the games first. |
I would purchase the game with huge smiles. In the Bahamas, I know the folks that own the game store and lots of people older than 12 still play!
|
If I really wanted to be discreet about it, I wouldn't go for the hoodie route, I'd simply travel to the next town over heh. I'm just as good as invisible there.
Not that I would do such things though. At my age (whatever that is) I could care less what they think. Besides, I have friends my age who were at Comic Con so I dare them to say something! I know they won't though but that's why they're my friends and also why I want to kill them for going to Comic Con w/o me!!! And as for the potential finger shakers and naysayers I might encounter whilst I purchase it...I say good day. |
I've never used an excuse to buy Pokemon games. I just go into Game Stop and buy it. I'm not ashamed in any way. I might have been embarrassed back in junior high/freshman year, but after that, I just stopped caring what people think of me. If they think I shouldn't be playing Pokemon or if they're going to make fun of me, then I really don't care about whether or not I'm impressing them or if I ever have a chance of being friends with them.
And let's be honest, the people working at Game Stop are gamers. There's a 90% chance that they already have a copy put aside for themselves, and even if they don't play Pokemon, they won't care because the gaming community is generally a very accepting one. We're all nerds (I don't mean to offend anyone by saying that; I mean it in the most endearing way). We stick together! Haha. |
Not too long ago, I wore my pokemon shirt to school and my buddy Justin asks me, "You don't really watch that show, do you?" I also got a few other..strange looks by people. So, in conclusion, yes it is rather labeled as a "kids" game, yet it is only labeled that by people who either have not played the game or never got into it. I am only 16, but even the general teen thinks it's for the younger minds. I think there shouldn't be an age interval for this game. It's suited for all ages, excluding those who aren't old enough to register the concept.
That being said, I do not need an 'excuse'. I do not care what other people think of me to that extent anyways. Might I mention that the "teens" at my school seem to think that Elmo and Hello Kitty are suitable for their age. I do believe they have no room to judge :) |
if i get any funny looks, im normally retort that its a gift for a younger cousin or something
|
My excuse would be that I like Pokemon games and my 3DS is collecting dust.
|
Is Pokemon really that unpopular in certain areas? I live in a city that was built around a technology university, and most of the college kids around here love Pokemon. We have an official Pokemon league that meets just outside of the campus, and some of the members are even over 30 years old... even they don't hide their hobby.
I'll just go to the game store the day of release, ask for my pre-ordered copy with a smile, and play with all my friends right there. C: |
Nuzlocke. It will give me something to do.
|
Why should I really be ashamed to buy Pokémon games?
They're pretty damn popular in the age groups that grew up with the games. Besides, when I go there and pick up the game, I think the cashiers will have seen so many people coming to buy it that they're not gonna care about whether I do or not. |
Quote:
|
My excuse is "I want it".
Simple. I would be ashamed of myself if I ever ridiculed somebody for doing something they enjoy. (as long as they're not hurting anyone by doing it of course) The last thing anybody needs is me judging them for every little thing. |
My excuse? I want it. It's the most anticipated Pokemon game ever, so why not.
I definitely won't feel ashamed, I've been a Pokemon fan all my life and everyone here in my place knows it. Surely they can't do a single thing if that's a person's interest. |
Quote:
|
My excuse? Do y'all (the clerks) want to see my money, or not? If not, I can always take my business elsewhere. Oh yeah, I'll also tell them I plan on evaluating it for my blog (which isn't a lie either).
Or I can always come stumbling into the store acting like I'm drunk. They'll just chalk it up to an impulse purchase made while intoxicated. |
I don't need an excuse to buy it. I have no reason to be ashamed of playing the game.
|
Quote:
Whether you like Pokemon or being ashamed about it, it doesn't matter, regardless of age. It also doesn't matter if others think people of older age shouldn't play the games or enjoy the series. I personally don't like Pokemon anymore, and think it's rehash after rehash, but whether people like it or hate it is the least of my concerns. Now, criticizing others for their opinions, no matter which side, is what doesn't fly by me. |
I work in retail and when people buy things that aren't targeted at their demographic, they always come up to the counter and say things like "oh this isn't for me" - and therefore I know from personal experience that the cashier doesn't give a crap what you buy... because I know I don't give a crap what anybody wants to buy.
So when I go to the counter at the game store, I do it the same way I'd buy a packet of chocolate biscuits. It's also the same way I'd buy a pack of condoms. I'd walk easily to the counter, ask for the game, get it and leave lol. I'm even buying both versions, so I should be doubly embarrassed... but I'm not :P |
It shames me more to be a part of the society where people could question my interest in a video game - Especially a game so fun and successful , than it ever would to buy the game in the first place. I can't imagine needing an excuse... But that's not what the topic's about, so...
If for some reason I felt that I needed an excuse, something like 'I'm buying it for my younger sister' Though, that would hardly be a lie. Come the end of the year, I'll probably have brought this game five times over - I get both, my sisters get one each, and I'll buy my dad a copy for Christmas - He loves the Pokemon games ^.^ |
Everyone is a geek of some sort and should be ashamed of it. Those of us in this community are pokegeeks. Others Call of Duty, Halo, etc.. Others fitness and so forth. I admit I am a pokegeek, or pokenerd. One should be ashamed of that and if your friends cant accept that fact, well then they werent your friends in the first place were they?
|
^ That makes no sense to me. I don't need an excuse, I just love Pokemon and have loved it for 14 years. People shouldn't be ashamed to be a nerd or geek or Pokenerd. And as other have mentioned you shouldn't be ashamed to be a Pokemon game and no one at the store really gives a crap what you buy.
|
I had a conversation about the games once with the clerk when I was buying BW, and they were many years older than me, haha.
I don't really care - I just go and buy the game. As such my excuse for buying the game will be 'because it's fun'. =p |
You guys are all way too brave, I plan to sit at home behind the keyboard and order it :p
|
I won't be buying them, they had a great opportunity to make a new addition to the Pokemon story and franchise but instead made two of the third color.
|
Back when I bought Diamond I felt a LITTLE shy, because no one, and I mean NO.ONE.plays pokemon in my country T_T It's strange that they even sell pokemon games here.
But when I bought White I didn't care, and what's more, I found it really amusing when boys or men stare at me at the shop, saying something like "omg a pretty girl plays games? that's cool~" with their gaze, LOL. As for the "exuse" part - if I want something, other people's thoughts are the last thing that I care about. |
I don't think people should need an excuse, it's a game. I never really understood why Pokemon was to be deemed a "kids" game, and games like Mario aren't. I'll probably buy it through Best Buy and get the reward points.
|
If you think it's just A game then you have NO game :)
|
I'll probably quietly/nonchalantly (or I'll try as best as I can) hand it to the cashier and then be on my merry way. Perhaps I'll order it online though...
|
I'm pre-ordering them both to be picked-up IN STORE so i guess i don't really care. I mean i was VERY ashamed when i got my event (Snarl) Zoroark from EB Games. <.<; But when i picked up White at K-Mart, i just wanted it THAT badly, i'd been waiting 3 months post-release. So my excuse is that "i've waited patiently since i heard of it, so I don't really care what you think." Plus, if they do a Midnight release, i'll be with other Pokemon Geeks.
|

Japan are loving that game. There'd be no excuse to buy it.
|
If Japan likes it, I like it.
Seriously, my excuse is that it's Pokémon. If it's Pokémon, then you gotta buy it :P |
one dose not simply question buying a pokemon game
i like what i like and haters gonna hate i like cinnamon :) |
I just go up to the cashier and buy it. I'm not ashamed of buying Pokèmon games or anything Pokemon
|
Like the last poster said, I'll just go up to the employee and purchase the game from them. I'm not ashamed: I'm a Pokemon fan and I'm proud of it, tbh. xD
|
I don't need an excuse to buy a Pokemon game.
Cards, anime DVDs, and stuffed animals on the other hand... |
I'm not ashamed to love pokemon , but the guy at the cashier is a friend of mine that loves pokemon.Infact he works there to afford pokemon games.I bought B/W from him.
|
Because it's part of Pokémon. No other reason.
I'm not bothered if it's a bad game or a good one. If it's part of the franchise, it's going to be mine. |
I preordered both at Amazon to get the gift :D But I would also buy it in the shop. I bought Blue, Gold, FireRed, Pearl in shops but now that I have Amazon, I became lazy^^
|
I don't need an excuse to buy the game. I want it, and I'm going to buy it. If people don't like, then tough luck for it..
|
Ummm... why not buy online if you that ashamed???? LOL anywho i have to get B/W 2, because my GF ran through my original and it just killed it for me that she did everything and raise my Pokémon wrong, so I have to do a do over
|
i just want to see if the story line of pokemon will continue or end
|
I'm not ashamed. XD Anyone that knows me knows I still like playing Pokemon games. At work they see me playing it on my iPhone during my lunch break. xDD
|
I don't need at "excuse" tobuy Black and White 2. I prefer to be myself around others so if theydon't like me or respect me because of my interests then I wouldkindly ask them to stay away from me. I'm just going to probablyorder the games online or get them at my local Wal-Mart.
|
Lol at the high schoolers who think Pokemon is for kids.
I wear a Pikachu sweatshirt to campus and get multiple compliments every time. So yes, I'll pre-order + pick up my copy without even thinking twice about. I may just wear my Pikachu sweatshirt while I'm at it. |
I always go to the same store to buy the Pokemon games exactly the day they are released here so i guess this time it won't change much, i don't need any excuse, i have LOTS of reasons to buy it. When people say that pokemon is for little kids i just ignore it and justify it with their ignorance, that happens a lot too, i'm always talking to people about pokemon even though they don't really care/understand pokémon, so i guess i'm kinda asking for it ahha :D but whatever
|
Psht, I am 22 years old and have no shame in my nostalgic love for the Pokemon series. I have already pre ordered my white two.
|
I love Pokemon. I don't need an excuse. And if anyone's a jerk towards me then I'll just say, "Mind your own freaking business. :D " You gotta do it with a smile, it helps a lot.
|
I agree with everyone here. I don't need an excuse. I love the games and I have both version pre-ordered so I will pick them up at my local gamestop. The workers at my local gamestop are all good people and I talk with them a lot and have pre-ordered HG/SS/D/P/P as well so they give me a heads up on the pre-order and any pokemon events they are giving away from the store.
I don't need anyone telling me what I can and can not like or do in my free time. I work at Target and honestly we get all kinds of gamers at our store so I don't question what people buy. There was a pretty big group for HG/SS release at my gamestop so I have a feeling it will be even bigger. Plus my birthday is on Oct 4 and my work gave me the 4-8 off so I am gonna be enjoying black 2 and white 2. :) |
.. uh cause .. it looks cool :P
|
I buy the games because pokemon was a big part of my childhood and it's fun playing games that bring back great memories
|
My Excuse
Dude pokemon is sweet. At least I'm man enough to not have an excuse.
|
I tell all my friends that Pokemon could not possibly be fully understood by a twelve year old boy, and so playing it at my age is not a problem, or something to be embarrased about.
|
I know people my age who still play so I've got no problem with walking into Town and picking up a copy from Game. If I've played it for 13+ years I'm hardly going to stop now.
|
Looking through this thread, I see "I will do it with NO HESITATION".
I have a bit of a reputation for being a pokemon fanatic, so anyone who knows me (which somehow seems to be everyone- I really don't understand how that works) will get out of the path between me and the game if they see me. XD |
