Your Pokemon Traditions

I got an idea for this thread after seeing it on Serebii.

Basically, what this thread is about is - What are some of the traditions you have when playing a Pokemon game?

Such as playing as a certain gender, having certain types on your team etc.

Share your traditions here!

Pokemon Trainer UV September 16th, 2012 2:40 PM

I always go for a male starter for some reason...
I also always try to solo with my starter for as long as I can until I find a Pokemon that I know is strong competitively or cool-looking.

Sydian September 16th, 2012 4:01 PM

- Nickname everything
- Something needs to know Flamethrower or a really good Fire move
- Battle all trainers and wild Pokemon
- Use matching Pokeballs when possible, or my favorites (Dive, Premier, Love)
- Save Rare Candy till the E4
- Try to keep Pokemon on the same level, or at least within a 2 level range from each other

I think that's it for me.

Bossk749 September 16th, 2012 4:18 PM

-Train all Pokemon on the same levels. If I catch a Pokemon I grind until it is the same level as my others.
-Rotate them: say I have a Pidgeotto, Grovyle, and Corphish at level 18, and my Seviper is level 19; I will NOT use Seviper until everyone else is level 19. I have this weird rotating thing.

Rodriguezjames55 September 16th, 2012 4:49 PM

1) attempt to nickname them
2) 1st pokemon must evolve by the 1st gym
3) find 6 that will be my final team
a) type variety
4) have move with decent pp and at least 80 attack
a) 1 exception beat up
5) All pokemon be at least 50 for elite 4
6)catch all legendaries
7)fail at battle frontier WHY???

I do that too :D
Not as strictly though, I sometimes tolerate one of my more favoured pokemon being one or two levels higher. But the wouldn't get used as much to compensate.

Unless you count my terrible record at battle frontiers the only other tradition I have is to obtain all three starters and then start playing through regions with traded in alternative starters for the hell of it (plus it makes t more difficult since they can't go over a certain level).

Bounsweet September 16th, 2012 7:34 PM

I have to have a female starter. I also catch only female mons (with the exception of genderless and male-only)

I rotate them depending on who levels up the soonest. Poke A levels up with 500 exp points, Poke B levels up with 100, Poke C levels up with 1,000; order: B, A, C)

I also usually name my rival "Oscar"

I agree with him. That seems the be the trend I go with as well

Retro Bug September 16th, 2012 7:57 PM

- All Nicknamed
- All Female (If Possible)
- Always have a flier & a surfer
- Beat everything/one at least once

Hmm, I think that's it. I do the level up thing too (that the above, above user mentioned) if I can but sometimes I just don't care.

PlatinumDude September 16th, 2012 8:45 PM

My traditions:
-I play as a guy
-I keep the starter throughout the entire game.
-My team consists of the starter, a Surf Pokemon (usually the Water starter), the regional pseudo-legend (broken with B/W and possible B2/W2), a Flier, one of the regional fossil Pokemon, and the mascot Pokemon
-My starter is the strongest Pokemon while the rest are a few levels behind, usually at the same level
-Most, if not all, of the team are male, if possible

Meganium September 16th, 2012 9:19 PM

Well, the only tradition I have for me is to always choose a grass starter. I'm a grass-type fan, so I gotta have a grass-type starter to start my journey. Yep! That's pretty much it.

Hikamaru September 16th, 2012 9:22 PM

My traditions in Pokemon games:
  • I always play as the girl
  • I always name my character after myself
  • I often use the canon name for my rival
  • My team often consists of: Grass-type, Fire-type, Water-type, Flying-type and two wildcard Pokemon
  • I always have a Surf and Fly user on my team
  • I always include type diversity
  • I battle all Trainers and catch any wild Pokemon I see
  • Starter usually has to be the highest-leveled member of my team
  • My team has to be at least Lv50 by the Elite Four
  • I always balance my team's genders (e.g. 3 males and 3 females)

BiGoDeViN28 September 16th, 2012 9:23 PM

-Always play as Male
-Always use Starter
-Name my in-game character either my name or his appropriate canon name
-Keep Pokemon with in at least 3 levels of each other
-Nickname everything
-Always keep stocked on Potions, Pokeballs, etc.

About it for me.

Brendino September 16th, 2012 11:12 PM

A couple of my "traditions" would be:
  • Playing as the male character, named after myself
  • Pick a starter that's of a different type from my previous version
  • Name my rival their canon name
  • Keep my starter on my first playthrough, but they are never the powerhouse on my team
  • Battle every single trainer I see, except while surfing
  • Keep 5 of my Pokemon within 1 level of each other, with the 6th being slightly higher
  • When trying to catch a Pokemon, always press Up+B
Like I said, I don't know if these are exactly traditions, but they are things that I always do.

Razoof September 16th, 2012 11:48 PM

1.Usually play as girl.(I don't know why) Some times I play as a guy.
2.I always have certain types on me(Fire, Water, Flying, Electric, Psychic)
3.I usually breed one of my pokemon to try and get shiny version(Unsuccessfully)
4.When catching a pokemon I always stop and stare at the pokeball.

Firox September 17th, 2012 12:50 AM

The main one for me would be

• Meowth always has to be in my team. Once I catch one Its probably the one I use the most. Trying to make him/her evolve the right way as soon as possible.
Depending on which Meowth I catch first:
• Male Meowth I always give it the same nickname, Ch'marr
• Female Meowth I always name her Xandra

others:
• Rotate between playing as a Guy or a Girl
• I name my player after my Family members. Example, I play as the girl, I will name her after my grandma and mom first name Maria
• Rival I will try and name it from a different country. When I start a new game, depending on what my favorite country (because of football or anthem) is, I'll try and name it as if the rival was born in that country. [quick example: last time I started the game, Antigua & Barbuda had qualified for the 3rd round of CONCACAF, so I named my Rival - Byers, after my favorite Antiguan football player Peter Byers]
• Battle every trainer, even in the gyms.
• I catch only Pokemon I don't have, the others I battle with Meowth/Persian to make it gain more experience

Ice Car September 17th, 2012 12:54 AM

Always play as female.

Always look around for obligatory fat guy talking about technology in home town.

Rainbow Arcanine September 17th, 2012 3:08 AM

Talk to NPCS, in case they're giving out items or useful info :P.
Play as a guy, really don't know why.
Always have 6 Pokemon on my team.
Battle all wild Pokemon.
Try to keep everyone, the same level.

That's about it for me.

Roughsponge September 17th, 2012 3:20 AM

My traditions:
  • Pick the male character
  • Have the starter be male as well
  • Always use the starter the whole game
  • Teach the water type surf
  • Teach the flying type fly
  • Catch male looking pokemon as males, and female looking ones as female
  • Nickname all my pokemon
  • Keep Rare candys until the elite four
  • Make sure all pokemon are on the same levels
  • Have pokemon in my party in order of levels; from lowest to highest
  • Battle all trainers
  • Always have a water, electric and fire pokemon on my team

metal64meli September 17th, 2012 5:56 AM

-Play always as a girl
-Always pick the fire starter
-My starter is always 10 levels ahead of the others in my party
-Nickname my pkmn as metal artists
-Catch more males than females
-Have at least 2 fire types in my party, 1 grass, 1 water, 1 flying, and 1 with any other type
-Catch all the legendaries
-Catch all the shinies (if they appear)
-Catch everything from the 1st generation
-Battle all the trainers

Sirfetch’d September 17th, 2012 12:05 PM

-I always start with the water type on my first playthrough, then the grass, then the fire type.(Gen 3 was the exception. I started with Torchic.)
-I always catch the generic bird and keep it on my team the entire game.
-Teach my starter only attack moves
-Water starter HAS to know Ice Beam(To take care of the Dragons)
-Must battle EVERY trainer in the game.
-I talk to everybody on my first playthrough.
-Click on anything that I think may be hiding an item.(I am too lazy to use dowsing mch.)
-Must have a Pokemon know Fly and Surf
-Strictly use 1 legendary max when battling the Elite Four.
-Name rival after one of my friends

Ephemeral Euphoria September 17th, 2012 12:10 PM

1 - Nickname my starter.
2 - Plan out my team beforehand.
3 - Get every item.
4 - Battle every trainer.
5 - Catch every legendary.
5 - Never lose. Ever.

TheLeetCasualGamer September 17th, 2012 1:36 PM

- Always pick a grass starter
- If I did not pick the grass starter, find the first grass Pokemon to use for as long as I do not deem it worthless
- Nickname all my Pokemon after common christian names
- Nickname all my Pokemon sexual names
- Nickname all my Pokemon after old discarded internet memes
- Nickname all my Pokemon the same way a weeaboo would
- Eat pie
- Use all my items and spend all my money right before the Elite four
- Find at least one Pokemon I never or seldom use and use it on my team

Elite Overlord LeSabre™ September 17th, 2012 11:10 PM

1. Choose the female character.
2. Give my Pokemon in my main party totally generic boy/girl names for nicknames.
3. Have a cat Pokemon on my team, always female.
4. Water, Electric, and Ground types always on my team.
5. Go into most Gym Leader battles being at least 5 levels higher than they are.
6. Never have a Pokemon faint in battle.
7. Catch every naturally appearing Pokemon in the game except for a few species that I dislike strongly.
8. Keep all six party members at the same level.

mjolnirIV September 17th, 2012 11:46 PM

I always choose male, just cos I'm a male in real life lol. I pretty much always choose the water starter, because I feel it generally gives me an easier start to the game. I have a habit of catching a low level pokemon like a pidgey or something, and then training it to a high level, usually higher than my starter pokemon, just because I want too haha. And I usually talk to every npc I can, in the hope they'll give me an item or something.

Keiran September 17th, 2012 11:51 PM

-Pick Gender/OT based off the lead singers name of whatever band I'm currently listening to
-Nickname Pokemon in same fashion, but include bands or other members names
-Use pre-made team from other version including random Pokemon I haven't used previously.
-Only finish replaying if I need to RNG events/legendaries, otherwise get bored and give up

Itcheeee September 18th, 2012 5:15 AM

-I always try to have a move of each type
-Use every HM needed for the game
-Use female playable character, if that is available
-I also always start with a male starter, unless I had a Chikorita
-Pick my favorite starter on the first version of the generational trio I buy, and so on
-Always use my starter on my team

LightningAlex September 18th, 2012 6:05 AM

- Every time I play FR/LG, I train my Pokemon to level 50 before battling Kogga. It takes a long time, but it pays off later :)
- I always pick a male starter (If I get a female, I restart the game).
- I tend to always have an Electric and a Ghost Pokemon in my team.

Well.... that's about it.

xxReshiramxx September 19th, 2012 5:55 PM

1. I always play as a girl.

2. Always go with my real name.

3. Always nickname the Pokemon I know I'm going to keep.

Pokemon_Geek September 20th, 2012 11:42 AM

Ever since Crystal finally gave the option to play the girl, I play her even if I prefer the boy's design.

I always use the starter.

I use the "main" legendary(Mewtwo, Lugia, Rayquaza etc.) since the story pretty much gives it to you(especially in Black/White).

I try to have team that's as elemental as possible: water(including ice), fire, grass(to represent the nature aspect of earth), electric, rock/ground/steel(one of these 3 to represent earth) and flying(to represent wind). I've always loved the ideas of combining the elements; it just feels so natural. If I get a hybrid that gives me an extra slot, I squeeze in a non traditional element.

soopaord September 20th, 2012 4:14 PM

I still press down + B when catching a Pokemon.

And up until recently, whenever starting a new game, I would always get the potion from the PC

I do that too. Keeps my team nice and balanced.
Other traditions I do:
- Keep my starter in my party at all times, except when the situation requires that I use a different team of Pokemon.
- My team usually has a Fire-type, a Water-type, an Electric-type, a Grass-type, and two other types. (usually a Ground-/Rock-type and a Psychic-type, but that can change; I think the TCG influenced me somehow. =P)
- I never nickname my Pokemon.
- I typically save my game in a Pokemon Center.
- I save my Rare Candies for IV checking. (Yes, I'm that kind of person =P)
- I fight every trainer on a route before going to the next route.
- I fight every trainer in a gym; if a gym allows me to skip a trainer if I get a quiz question right, I purposely get it wrong.
- I visit every building and talk to every NPC when I first visit an area.
- If I want a certain Pokemon on my team, I try to aim for one with a gender that fits it best.
- My Water Pokemon typically knows Surf and Ice Beam.
- My Fire Pokemon typically knows Flamethrower.
- My Electric Pokemon typically knows Thunderbolt. (Galvantula was the rare case where it knew Thunder instead)
- My team usually has a regional bird Pokemon for flight purposes.
- If there's a legendary or event Pokemon that I can't seem to catch, I keep resetting the game until I catch it. (I wonder if there are people out there who don't reset the game when they fail to catch a legendary...)
- I save my Master Ball for the hardest legendaries.
- Since Gen IV, I've saved my Nuggets as trade fodder for GTS as an extra incentive to trade for my Pokemon.
- I never ask for unreasonable trades in GTS; I've never requested anything above Level 50, and I try to make fair trade requests (i.e. your starter for my starter, your legendary for my legendary + my held item, etc.).

Ryliam September 21st, 2012 6:08 PM

Always play as male
Always choose a water starter
Always hatch pokemon in the prettiest place :3

JessieFan92 September 22nd, 2012 8:05 PM

Play as a female
Use my real name
Always choose a water starter (Except in Pokemon Heartgold. I have Typhlosion.)
Save my rare candys
All male team
Capture legendaries after beating the game.

XtinaIsMeLuvinWWE September 23rd, 2012 12:16 PM

I always plan out my team to make sure I have a type advantage against every type lol :)

Vinniursa September 28th, 2012 6:10 PM

My traditions consist of the following:
Grab the Fire Starter.
Talk to everyone in the town or village for valuable info and awesome freebies.
Have a ghost in my team (I love me ghosties).
Have a cat in my team.
Give my Pokemons strange and vulgar names.

That about rounds it out for my traditions.
