I have to say they did a pretty good job this time.

At least it's better than Hilbert and Hilda.

There is usually a theme going on with protagonists' names, but I like the whole "resonate" theme going on.

The female character's name was a good choice, I like the name Rosa.

Nate on the other hand is suits the male character well.

I do agree. They are WAY better than Hilbert and Hilda. I don't know if any thought went into naming Hilbert and Hillda. I really like Rosa and even though I think Nate is plain it is one of the better names yet.

Satoshi Ookami September 28th, 2012 6:37 AM

They are not Japanese names, so I'm not gonna like them =D
But oh well... they did a decent job even though Nate seems to be randomly generated name o.O

curiousnathan September 28th, 2012 6:43 AM

I'm quite pleased to hear this news to be honest. Mainly because 'Nate' is a shortened version of my name and will definitely suit me well when I play my copy of B2, haha.

Ho-Oh September 28th, 2012 6:47 AM

lol I dislike them ;( Rosa reminds me of a character I really disliked on a TV show once and Nate seems... well I don't have any negative opinions of that, but Rosa, ya not a fan of (also Hilda > Rosa :3;)

Rambagos September 28th, 2012 6:57 AM

Yay, Rosa not too bad. I like it. But to be honest, I dislike the names of Nate. I Prefer Kyohei because its more cool than Nate IMO.

Hikamaru September 28th, 2012 7:03 AM

Remember that protagonists' names usually have a theme to them?

The names come from "resonate", which was also the basis for their Japanese names.

audinowho September 28th, 2012 7:04 AM

I wonder what the basis for these names are.

I don't mean to sound dumb, but what is "resonate"?

halcyonic September 28th, 2012 7:31 AM

Gah, I agree with Forever. I seriously dislike their new names so much. Nate's fine but Rosa? Seems way too Arabic. I would've opted for Nathan & Rose.

Resonate.

: to relate harmoniously : strike a chord <a message that resonates with voters>

Taking a look at the word I bolded there, harmonious:

: having the parts agreeably related : congruous <blended into a harmonious whole>

So basically it involves coming together as one...just like Kyurem and Zekrom/Reshiram :P They just applied that to the protagonist's names. Silly Pokemon and its puns.

PlatinumDude September 28th, 2012 9:21 AM

Nate and Rosa...not bad. Their names being based on "resonate" were so totally creative of GameFreak.

Since when?

Ethan/Lyra (Lyra is supposedly a redesigned Crystal)
Brendan/May
Lucas/Dawn

Those don't have any theme to them that I can see.

Red/Blue(Green) were named after the first two games, though the defaults were always reversed in appropriate games. (If you played Green your MC's default is Green and Rival's preloaded was Red.)

Hilbert and Hilda don't really have a theme to them either.

I think Nate and Rosa are coincidence cause I've yet to find anything about a member of Gamefreak and or TPC interview to say the meaning behind their names.

TwilightBlade September 28th, 2012 12:16 PM

Ethan/Lyra - sound
Brendan/May - probably the only pairing with a weak theme. bravery and spring
Lucas/Dawn - luke and light, dawn and light

Hilbert and Hilda don't really have a theme to them either. German for battle

At first glance, I did not like them. They're too normal. I like them better after someone pointed out the resonate thing. It fits with harmony w/e N.

HaloSonic September 28th, 2012 12:27 PM

Nate, eh? cue the unending line of Uncharted jokes.
Rosa seems unusual, but it's nice.
though, if I end up playing as either character, I'd end up naming Nate as Drake/Kyouhei/Palmtre and Rosa as Mei/Meiling/Amy.

Treecko September 28th, 2012 12:30 PM

There was a theme. TwilightBlade kind of explains it.

Anyway I rather like Nate and Rosa. The resonate theme is actually pretty creative and they go with the original name theme.

At least they're better than Hilda and Hilbert.

I have a friend named Nate so that reminds me of him. Only difference is he's handicapped.

Golurks Were Meant to Fly September 28th, 2012 12:35 PM

Hmm I like Nate, but I think I prefer Mei to Rosa. Although over all they're pretty good, and I really like the theme. I can't wait to play as Nate! :D

Bluerang1 September 28th, 2012 12:37 PM

FINALLY! This is all I've been waiting for. Not bad at all, I really like them. I thought of Marlon as Nate though. Rosa's great!

chella182 September 29th, 2012 4:24 AM

Not a fan of the name Rosa, but Nate's okay.

Zayphora September 29th, 2012 6:08 AM

Hmm. Nate fits the male protag perfectly. I noticed that this time, the male protag's name seems....younger, somehow, fitting with the fact that he seems younger than Hilbert was in BW. And Rosa is just great. This is so much better than Hilbert/Hilda. I really like these names. THANK GOD these weren't a horrible disappointment. *COUGH COLRESS COUGH*

The names mean "to battle." Check Bulbapedia.

Omg that is an insult D= Arabic is my first language! (totally joking about feeling insulted xD)
I myself dislike the name Rosa a lot.. it's a beautiful name but it doesn't go well with the character, I'd name her Lia or Reyna maybe? a short and funky name that suits her jumpy personality. Rosa is just too serious

on the other hand I love the name Nate, it suits him perfectly IMO!

Tetra September 29th, 2012 1:06 PM

They're okay. Just Rosa dosen't feel American to me...

Wheaties September 29th, 2012 3:25 PM

I'm not too disappointed about the names, but they do sound rather average.. I may be biased though because my brother's name is Nate. :pink_tongue:
Rosa to me reminds me a Roserade or a grass pokémon, so maybe she's very earthy?

Nick September 29th, 2012 9:53 PM

finally names that aren't embarrassing. love 'em.

lol hilbert.......
lol hilda......

MrGriszell September 30th, 2012 12:05 PM

I think they fit perfectly, especially since there home town is in relation to the real world is in New Jersey .

Pokemon_Geek October 2nd, 2012 2:23 PM

I was really hoping there was a Sailor Moon and Digimon fan on the staff, but I'm fine with the names. Besides, I use my real name when playing anyway. I just like idea of using canon names so that it will be less of a mouth full like the "______male player" or "______female player" when talking about the games in general.

giradialkia October 2nd, 2012 3:17 PM

I'm fairly pleased with the newly announced names of the protagonists. They're not BAD by any means- I'm just delighted they're not abysmal (I'll never, ever be able to recover from Hilbert/Hilda. Just... BLECH). These names are quite.. unexpected, and pretty nice. They're names, and ones that won't affect me all that much in my playthrough, so I don't mind too much, but they're nice, yeah :P

Xanntha14 October 2nd, 2012 3:35 PM

I like Nate but i think they could of picked a better name for the girl protagonist. Not that its a bad name though

Squirrel October 2nd, 2012 3:48 PM

Nate is a really cute name, I love it! It suits him well n.n Rosa however sounds Italian and definitely does not suit the female protagonist imo :p I like the new names tbh, but anything's better than Hilbert/Hilda haha.

mikey October 2nd, 2012 4:31 PM

I like them! Finally some good names that fit the characters well.

MVPokeStory October 2nd, 2012 4:34 PM

What, they finally have names I hear in school. XD.

Killjoy October 3rd, 2012 6:45 AM

I like em both. I've known some cool Nathans, and Rosa could be short for Roselia!....
I'd name my kid that if I was in the Pokémon world, and the name was widely known to represent something pretty

As said many times above, better than the BW protagonists, imo

Limanya October 3rd, 2012 7:26 AM

I loooooove them! Nate is one of the most awesome names ever and Rosa just makes me think of Rose from Homestuck.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire October 3rd, 2012 9:55 AM

I like the names. They seem simple but are fitting as Black and White are simple shades. Also someone another site pointed out that they're proably a pun on Resonate. I noticed that Hugh is proably a verbal pun on the word Hue.

Sheep October 3rd, 2012 5:00 PM

I really like these! <3 Very pretty-sounding and much better than Hilbert and Hilda imho. Although I do think Rosa doesn't suit the female protagonist too much, I'll get used to it very soon haha.

MarioManH October 3rd, 2012 6:16 PM

I like them, Nate fits the male protagonist well, and same with the female, seems like a Rosa to me

Wobbachomp October 3rd, 2012 7:36 PM

Great names for them imo, I especially like Rosa for some reason.

Bubbles987 October 4th, 2012 7:09 AM

These names have not been confirmed :P

Twilight-kun October 4th, 2012 7:37 AM

Still going to call them Mei/Kyouhei...

TechnoEK October 4th, 2012 8:52 AM

I love the names. I never had a problem though, seeing as I always named my character either my nickname or my favorite name.

rizoph October 5th, 2012 3:45 PM

They're great names! The only problem is I don't ever use the default names.

They actually have. Multiple sources have confirmed this.

Cosmotone8 October 5th, 2012 4:47 PM

I have a few friends named Nate, so I don't mind that. As for Rosa, its not that bad. I would've liked just plain old Rose better, but meh.

Unova is based on NY a lot of Hispanics (im one of them) so Rosa fits

rizoph October 5th, 2012 8:48 PM

Huh. I didn't know it was based off of New York!

THIS! I love Nathan Drake! Haha, but more to the point, I do like their choices for this game much better than the original B/W, but I still prefer the Jap names better. However, I rarely use the default names for the characters anyway, preferring to make the games more personal.

PlatinumDawnFtw October 6th, 2012 9:39 AM

I unofficially named the female character 'Faye' months ago, so she'll be Faye to me always :3

I like Rosa though, I am a fan of uncommon names.

When I posted my reply, there wasn't.
Although, honestly, I don't get what these names have to do with Black and White. I was hoping they would be Ebony and Ivory *gets slapped*
