Your IDEAL starter in FR/LG/R/S/E

OK, the choice is yours....

What, in your mind, is your ideal starter/s in all the 3rd gen games?
This is one aspect where your choices are usually always limited to fire/grass/water.

BUT

If you had the choice of any pokemon to accompany you on your journey, which one would you choose?

OBVIOUSLY, overpowered legendaries are out of the question and all pokemon should be in their PRE-evolved forms/base forms.

You're allowed to break the water-grass-fire type rule though!!

Want a ghost-type starter? go for it!!

Sound off below!!

Sydian December 1st, 2012 11:32 AM

...3th? :( You mean 3rd? Anyway, gonna tag on a "3rd Generation" prefix to this since you're asking for all 3rd gen games.

I'm fine with the starter choices we have in RSE/FRLG though, so I really wouldn't want anything else. I guess Eevee would be cool for FRLG since you can buy the evolutionary stones it needs, but you wouldn't be able to have Umbreon or Espeon, so that sucks. As for RSE, I really love all three starters and wouldn't wanna change them. If I had to Swablu would be nice, cause I hate having to wait so long to get one. Chirp.

Brendino December 1st, 2012 1:25 PM

If Feebas weren't so terribly useless until you have a few TMs or evolve it, I might have chosen it, just because they're next to impossible to find in R/S/E. Honestly, though, I can't think of too many other Pokemon that I would want as a starter, as I've always been content with the choices that we've been given. Maybe I'd go with Dratini, just so I could have a Dragonite earlier on in my journey.

Junior1205 December 1st, 2012 4:19 PM

This is a hard decision, since I like so many pokemon from all three gens. But I guess I would choose Bagon as the starter.

Deokishisu December 1st, 2012 4:52 PM

I'd pick Gastly, no contest there!

Hikamaru December 1st, 2012 5:27 PM

I would probably start with a Roselia since it's one of my fave Grass-types.

Dying Light December 1st, 2012 5:44 PM

For me, it's Ralts or Ghastly. Their evolutions are so cool.

If I were limited to normal starters, I pick Mudkip. Although your rival picks Treecko in R/S/E, if you teach Earthquake/Ice Beam to Marshtomp or Swampert, then there, problem solved.

hehe, yeah sorry, Posting from my phone, which always wants to predict my typing...changed it now.... and thanks!!

Personally, I would want Pikachu in FR/LG....just for nostalgia purposes.....but in terms of ''coolness'', I'd pick Dratini. I've always wanted to journey with a dragonite

Sassy Milkshake December 2nd, 2012 12:35 PM

I think having a fossil starter would be pretty cool. It'd take a crap load of training to evolve those suckers though. ;P

vaporeon7 December 4th, 2012 2:42 PM

I, like Syd, think that Eevee would have been a cool FRLG starter, especially because I could evolve it into Vaporeon! As for RSE, I like the starters the way they are.

~*!*~Tatsujin Gosuto~*!*~ December 7th, 2012 8:47 PM

For me it would have to be my favorite Pokemon Shuppet into a Banette or any of the ghost type Pokemon from generations I-III such as Gastly and Sableye.....yeah Sableye would be an ideal partner for me since it has no weaknesses.

:t354:TG

Crystal Noel December 8th, 2012 6:51 PM

I would either go with Eevee for all the options for evolving it or maybe I could go with Dratini because I could evolve it into a powerful Dragonite and very few trainers have Pokemon with an advantage against it early game.

Aryan143 December 8th, 2012 8:17 PM

I think Eevee would be the best considering it has 3 evolutions so we don't need any other starters.

pikakitten December 8th, 2012 11:24 PM

For any 3rd gen, or 4th or hell even 5th. Definitely Pikachu, even with his bad defense.

KarosNB December 25th, 2012 4:51 PM

Gastly, best ghost pokemon ever.

Master Xemnas December 27th, 2012 5:30 AM

I would have Gastly , Gengar is soooo powerfull !

PhoenixWright77 December 27th, 2012 5:49 AM

I think I would like to have a kabuto as a starter! It learns some pretty decent moves from the get-go!

DelightedTurk December 27th, 2012 8:59 AM

I would love an Elekid as a starter for some reason, Electabuzz is just a beast.

Kurapik December 27th, 2012 3:54 PM

I really like to have Charmender since the beginning of the journey (in order to obtain my own Charizard xD) and i wouldn't change him for nothing. But in term of utility I think that Jinx was the correct choice because off its Ice-Physic types it can take advantage aganist many pokemon

PokemonMasters December 28th, 2012 3:22 PM

Hmm, I guess it could've been Trapinch, Bagon or Dratini. Even though Dratini wasn't from third It would've been cool having Dragon type starters :3

Too overpowered starters, of course, IMO.

I would of course prefer the usual fire-water-grass combo of starters, but eevee would be nice, considering it can evolve to many diffrent types, 5 (as of 3rd gen).

pessimisticlyricist January 3rd, 2013 10:38 AM

I would say a clefairy because clefable is amazing.

blooddragon24 January 7th, 2013 10:44 PM

My starter was Charmander

My starter was Charmander

Seppy January 9th, 2013 3:25 PM

I've always thought, when Silver and Gold came out at the time, that they should have changed the type of the starters, not doing all the time Grass/Fire/Water. If i could choose any pokémon, i would go for a Cubone.

blue January 10th, 2013 3:17 PM

I would have probably chose Spheal, the only place you can get one is at Shoal Cave which is too late into the game IMO.

MudkipBoy January 19th, 2013 4:09 AM

Ummm.....Pichu, maybe? or Ralts...

XtinaIsMeLuvinWWE January 21st, 2013 9:32 AM

Leaf Green: Spearow, Nidoran (F), Vulpix, Venonat, Eevee, Goldeen or a baby poké like Magby, Azurill, Cleffa, Tyrogue

Emerald: Wurmple, Taillow or Electrike (or happy with Treecko!)

Seth Rollins January 21st, 2013 9:36 AM

Haha, well I would go with Pikachu, Minun or Eevee...I guess...Pikachu. Yeah, Pikachu, cause I want to be like Red :) If I would be a completely different person, I guess Eevee is going to be my choice. But if I'm going to be a ranger, Minun, no doubt about it.

Bey-Heart January 21st, 2013 12:09 PM

I think it would be pretty cool to start with Clefairy. It's always been one of my favorite Pokémon, and if it weren't for some last minute changes, it would have been Ash's starter (Which means you would have had a Clefairy in Yellow Version.) Also, I like the whole thing about Clefable and Gengar.

Sweets Witch January 21st, 2013 12:10 PM

Abra in FR/LG, definitely. RSE's a little more difficult, but in the end I guess I'd go with Swablu.

Raczack January 21st, 2013 1:21 PM

Nidoran or Lileep would probably my ideal starters, but I'm not picky.

Whistler January 21st, 2013 9:29 PM

I'd choose Whismur as my starter, but my favorite starter is Bulbasaur, although I'm technically allergic to grass type because of my grass allergy.

...Dwebbles are nice, but isn't in these gens. Overall I'd like to start with Whismur AND Dwebble though. :)

Captain Gizmo January 22nd, 2013 5:51 AM

Either Pikachu, Ralts or Dratini. Pikachu, because we form an amazing duo together. Ralts for the awesome stats and speed. And Dratini, because Dragonite kicks butt!

Hikamaru January 22nd, 2013 6:15 AM

Mudkip for me, especially given it was my first and only female starter in any main playthrough of a Pokemon game.

Schwan January 22nd, 2013 9:34 AM

Eevee or Omanyte. Espeon, Umbreon, Omastar carry me through games hahaha.

Clonehunter January 23rd, 2013 5:27 PM

Even with a wide array to choose from, I think I'd still go with Treecko as a starter....

Or maybe Absol, because I really enjoy using him for, well, anything really.

Ephemeral Euphoria January 23rd, 2013 5:32 PM

I'd go with one of the Regis in all honesty, even though they're legendaries they're not exactly overpowered now when compared to beasts such as Kyogre and Groudon.

Non legendary wise I'd go with either Zangoose or Seviper since they were personal favorites back when I was younger.

Venitardus January 23rd, 2013 7:04 PM

Torchic, Eevee or Kyogre for me. either one would be fine for me

The Amazing Justin January 24th, 2013 8:50 PM

Back when FireRed and LeafGreen came out, I wanted Pikachu as my starter with the other three available down the line. Here's hoping Yellow is remade solely in Generation 7.

Shikai January 24th, 2013 11:19 PM

Well I would go for zorua because once it reaches level 60 and is very friendly to you it is strong. I used it against Zekrom in B2 and the first time I used foul play and the second one was always a critical hit for me. I had to keep on redoing it until it wasn't a critical hit. This same thing happened with kyuerm.

I would get zorua. After you eveolve it and it reaches lvl 60 and is friendly to you it is very strong. Even against types that would not be so affective

Clemstar January 25th, 2013 10:56 PM

Ralts, Seedot or Roselia .

annikaprue January 26th, 2013 3:22 AM

I feel safer with a Water and Ground type. Mudkip, Charmander, or Corsola.

Evey February 2nd, 2013 5:23 AM

FireRed-Chamander, you get to learn that exta special move *hint hint* and its evolved form can learn fly.
Leafgreen-Bulbasaur, you learn that move *cough cough* and its generally a good powerhouse.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Any starter in those two versions are good of course~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ruby-Alright, lets face it. In these three generations the creaters seemed heavily biased XD poor fire-types. In Ruby Treeko and Mudkip would be good against Team Magma. Torchic (fav) would do well....fine I guess.
Sapphire-Again Treeko, would own this game against Team Aqua and Wallace. Torchic would own Steven tho...
Emerald- Treeko, again. My baby Torchic wouldnt have a chance! *runs around screaming and crying* Fire would die against Juan and Wallace. Beware!
______________--If you wanna break the rules--_________________________________________________________________
For all games I always use Blaziken, Eevee, Espeon, and Ninetails. So that would be Torchic, Eevee, Eevee, and Vulpix. Blaziken does good against all them crazy bugs, grass, steel types and the general population of pokemon. Espeon is good against almost EVERYTHING and Eevee is a neutral HM-slave :) Ninetails is just cool to have along with you during the journey XP
Caelus February 2nd, 2013 11:45 AM
I'm fine with the starters in both games, but if I had to pick another pokemon I would pick either Spheal, Bagon, Eevee, or Beldum.
Isseubnida February 18th, 2013 1:09 PM
Psyduck would be my unofficial starter.
SoraTheTruth February 18th, 2013 4:42 PM
Eevee, Bagon, Beldum, Growlithe, or Pikachu would be my ideal unofficial starters
WishCookie February 18th, 2013 11:01 PM
I would choose Eevee. I mean think of the...the possibilites!
BENSJAM February 20th, 2013 1:32 PM
I would easily pick sandshrew, because its evolution is so cool, and before it did evolve it looks quite good to.
Connor96 February 21st, 2013 3:06 AM
That'd be Beldum, just because Metagross is pretty brilliant ;p
Elaitenstile February 21st, 2013 3:54 AM
I would pick a Pokémon which would evolve twice, and the first at an early stage. Nevertheless, Pokémon (other than the real starters) like that are impossible to find. Eevee would be the best choice then, except you wouldn't get stones that early, or you would want it to be Espeon or Umbreon (which then requires happiness). But suppose, you managed to hobble up to Celadon with Eevee then xD. Also, other than Eevee, I'd really love Mudkip (it's a generic starter already, how lucky!) to take. Very nice little thing, also helpful 'cause it evolves early (like other starters, except this guy is my fav). Also, an ideal starter would be a one who looks normal, and can cross any terrain (in other words, have legs). He shouldn't be terrifying and should be small and naive like you. Not some hurly burly Rhyhorn, or some spooky Gastly. Not that I hate them, i'm just saying why they aren't starter-friendly.
Guy February 21st, 2013 10:03 AM
When playing R/S/E or FR/LG, I couldn't choose any differently from the starters we're given; I like them all. Although, given the chance, I guess I wouldn't mind choosing an Eevee as my starter in FR/LG if I could. Not being able to evolve it into Espeon or Umbreon is the only downside unfortunately.
mozartm99 February 21st, 2013 11:20 AM
Not sure why, but I really like seedot and all of its evolutions, so that would probably be my choice.
darksoul97 March 6th, 2013 1:43 PM
Probably a Growlithe, to later become beautiful Arcanine
LiquidRage March 6th, 2013 7:25 PM
I'd probably pick Shroomish or Duskull. Their just cool and have a pretty decent move pool and stats.
Sorbet March 8th, 2013 7:53 AM
Shroomish, Lotad or Spheal would have been perfect.
Sirfetch’d March 8th, 2013 9:53 AM
I would still consider Torchic the most ideal starter ever and would pick him easily at any opportunity.
Magykx March 24th, 2013 10:18 AM
I would choose Ralts. Although you can obtain it early on in the game, I still think it is a great choice as a starter. Other than that, I would choose Bagon because Salamence > Your life.
Tim! March 25th, 2013 7:46 AM
Snorunt for sure. It takes pretty long before you can get one and an Ice-type as a starter would be special. ^^
Kikaito plush March 25th, 2013 9:29 AM
I would go for Vulpix as you can not get on until late game.
Golden Warrior March 25th, 2013 12:12 PM
Hm, I can see Bagon as one I would want. Although, a Beldum would be just as amazing. Both have a great moveset when they finally evolve and on Metagross... that defense, so amazing.
Dangelitus March 30th, 2013 9:55 AM
for the 3 gen includes leaf grean, my ideal pokemon will be abra if he had at least one atack, but considering he don't have any attack until lv. 16, then a cool and powerful dratini.
For the RSE a metag will be something cool once he evolved.
Warship April 13th, 2013 5:01 AM
um i would probably want to start with machop or abra(if it had something like confusion to start off with of course XD) in fr/lg and surskit(because its cute) or electrike in r/s/e.
T!M April 13th, 2013 5:42 AM
In Ruby/Sapphire I always wanted to have Sharpedo as my starter. (And 8 Years later after I found about ROM Hacking I made that dream come true. :3) So, with that said. I would want Carvanha.
For FireRed and LeafGreen... Hm. This is hard. I've never really had a real attachment or must-have for any Pokémon in Kanto. But if I recall, when I was younger, I always wanted to be a Rock-Type trainer like Brock, so I... I would say Onix would be my starter?
Sorry for the long-winded response.
TwoFacedGaming2013 April 13th, 2013 9:09 AM
No legionaries! But i want to start with Lugia! ;)
inferno7453 April 13th, 2013 10:41 AM
Snorunt or Beldum, since they evolutions are so cool, and they have good movepools, besides, an Ice or Steel starter would be great to have. And not to mention that Snorunt can only be obtained late in the game and Beldum only after the E4.
lmcde22 April 29th, 2013 7:02 PM
Charmander is my baby <3 i could never give him up. I think he would feel bad if i wanted to have a different starter :)
MoogleCam April 29th, 2013 7:50 PM
I would definitely choose Zangoose as a starter (i guess Seviper would also be a starter) He is just really cool looking, although it can't evolve.
Clairvoyance_ April 29th, 2013 11:20 PM
I'd definitely go with Kecleon. It's so adorable. <3
Giant Magikarp April 30th, 2013 2:01 AM
I want a Pichu that does'nt evolve because Pichu>Everyone
Aether★ April 30th, 2013 9:19 AM
As a fire type lover my choice would be either Charmander or Vulpix, but since Vulpix is my favorite, then Vulpix it is.
