Did you use the Red Gyarados?
Assuming that you catched the Red Gyarados, did you use it in your team or did you leave it to rot in the PC? For both scenarios, why? Do you like having shinies on your team? Maybe you already had a Gyarados? Perhaps it didn't fit the 'motif' of your team? Perhaps yopu were dong a challenge and it just wasn't right?
I left mine to rot in the PC unfortunately. I mainly just enslaved it, using it for HM's -- waterfall and surf. What about YOU? |
Even though I caught Red Gyarados, I left him in the PC cos I don't care about using shinies on my team.
Also, I already had a Golduck on my team when I got to the Lake of Rage so I really didn't need another Water-type Pokemon. |
I couldn't care less that it was a shiny but i was lacking a good water-type in my team so i decided to use it.
Yeah I had a Tentacruel so there was no need for Gyarados. I think it might've been a Waterfall slave, but that's it.
It depends on the rest of my team. Usually no because they rest of my team is usually a higher level than that.
Nope. I never trained the Red Gyarados before. On the original or on HGSS. I've usually have the pokemon I'm surfing on at the part of the game.
Nope, because I have a Feraligatr.
Left mine in my PC, too. Poor thing. I did use it for Surf, Whirlpool and Waterfall occasionally though, particularly Whirlpool because Dragon's Den made me.
Anyway, I've caught a legitimate shiny in the same game and I didn't use it (granted it was just a Rattata), so I don't see why I would use a forced shiny either. :( |
The red Gyarados was unique enough that I wanted to keep it on my team, but only as an HM slave. I believe I had it know Surf, Waterfall, Whirlpool, and I think Strength? Either way, I think I only battled with it once or twice, and that was because I used it to stall while I healed my other Pokemon.
I just used mine for HMs, because I had other Pokemon I wanted on my team.
Yep, since my starter was Cyndaquil, I didn't have a water type Pokemon until Gyarados. It helped me alot in the battle against Lance :)
It is the main pokemon I use in HG, I actually just used it the sweep the 8th gym. I plan on keeping it on my HG team.
Nope :(. Although it was a shiny, in my eyes it was just your ordinary blue Gyarados. Since everyone got it when they went through the storyline, it wasn't a Pokemon that I treasured and loved. I never liked Gyarados anyway so I dumped it straight into the PC and only brought it out for HM business. Surfing, clambering up waterfalls, surfing across whirlpools and pushing boulders with Strength.
I also had a water-type already, so I didn't find it necessary to have another one join the team. But at least the Red Gyarados got to see some light after being captured ;). |
Mine I believe was left in the PC to rot, sadly. Had it on the original maxed out and only switched it in and out of the PC when I needed to. On HG, I vaguely believe I left it in the PC, already had a somewhat other good water type with another type, in which I can't remember what it was. :S
Only as a HM slave, Useful for teaching Waterfall and Surf :)
I did use it for a surfing slave until I caught a better water pokemon.

On Heartgold I used Feraligatr
On Soulsilver I made a Dragon-ish team and I egged Charmander to replace my starter and bought a Dratini from gamecorner and got a larvitar form Safari Zone so I thought Gyarados will be a good addiion |
Flung mine into the PC, hasn't left since.
I dunno I've never used the Red Gyarados before. |
Usually I don't use it, either because I already have a water type or because I don't feel confortable with using a red gyarados for battle. (I prefer it blue)
Yup, I have. If I picked Cyndaquil for my starter, I will purposely not raise a water Pokemon in my team and save that spot for when I catch that powerhouse. I personally can't resist shiny and strong Pokemon no matter how I get it, so the Red Gyarados is definitely not an exception. But if my starter is Totodile, I will definitely catch it, but it won't be a member in my team. Two water-types do not strengthen any team.
I normally just kill it off to annoy my nephew. He's all like, "OMG A SHINY POKEMON YOU HAS TO CATCH IT!!1!!!11" and then I'm like, "Lolnope." It's fun to annoy him. :)
Even if I did choose to catch it once, I wouldn't use it. I used it once before when I had Chikorita as a starter, and I really don't like using pokemon more than once. (I'm odd like that.) |
I used him, I like Gyarados a lot. I did box him for my second play through, but I kept Gyarados and leveled him up to about 80-100. IMO he's really good ever since he was overhauled in gen IV.
I use him mainly because he is a Shiny Pokemon and because you are required to battle him to advance the story, so I might as well catch it and use it.

No, not all that much. He wasn't technically legitimate like "Oh my Arceus, it's a shiny RANDOM Gyarados!" He was programmed to be shiny so I didn't like it. I just enslaved him and that was it. I'm replaying Heartgold but I doubt i'll use him. I'll just keep him to get to Lapras in Union Cave :P
Red Gyarados is one of the most unique pokemon in the whole game. I kept it on my team alongside my Blue Gyarados; both very powerful and destroyed Lance in the E4.
I can't use Pokemon I don't train myself, I love Gyarados; but I prefer to train it from Magikarp. So I pc'd it
I didn't even catch it! (Obvious answer)
on my 1st play,I used it after that experience,I thought Gyarados wasn't good unless you train it from Magikarp.
On my 2nd play I replaced it with Feraligatr and put it in the PC |
I used my Red Gyarados for awhile. I try to train all my Pokemon until they are level 100.
I rarely do simply because I prefer to use special based water Pokemon over physical ones.
I actually still have mine from SoulSilver but it was sent over to Diamond. I don't really use it aside from some battles with my friend (if we agree on a certain level restriction that stops me from using my better ones). That Gyarados was my second shiny, I believe. T:
But yeah it's just rotting in my PC box. I have either two or three LoR Gyarados now because people on GTS are always putting them up. Storyline or not, it's still a shiny. (; |
I've never used a Gyarados in my life and when I caught a shiny Gyarados it still did not make me want to use it; not even as an HM slave because I already had an HM slave. Gyarados was only good for completing my Pokedex and not to brag because everyone had one.
:t354:TG |
I boxed mine. Gyarados isn't really a Pokemon I like too much, plus I already had my water type (either Vaporeon or Feraligatr) by the time I reached Mahogany. There are water types I like much better and I wasn't a fan of how slow Gyarados was to level up. ):
I don't own either HG/SS yet (infact that is the reason I joined up) but in the original Pokemon Red/Yellow I used a Gyarados and when Gold came out I got the red Gyarados from then onwards (my starter was the grass type I think).
Surprised so many people don't like it, in the first 2 generations it was one of the most powerful pokemon in the game (stronger than the starter water pokemon in stats with a more diverse ability list), interesting because it evolves from the weakest pokemon in the game, i always got excited having a Magikarp on my team because I knew at level 20 it would evolve into something that was far beyond the strength of any other pokemon at the same level, even if attacks wise it was lacking (just tackle and bite at 20) I don't know how it fairs in the newer generations though, but I would expect If (when) I grab a copy of Soul Silver it will find itself on my team. |
I didn't catch it. I used it to evolve my Dratiny. It's color is nice but it is a programmed shiny. It's not a shiny Pokemon like the others.
As soon as I caught the Red Gyarados, I boxed it. I was intending on using it in the Battle Frontier, but I procrastinated and never got around training it.
I'm using Pyke the Red Gyarados as we speak on the current leg of my Red Monocolor challenge :). He was pretty much an obvious choice for the team. If I wasn't using him, I would have probably ended up with a Kingler instead, so it all worked out.
I used it in HG just because I did so in Gold, mostly for nostalgic reasons. My first team in Gold was Quilava/Red Gyarados/Ho-Oh and while I didn't just use those three, it was kinda cool to use the water Pokemon again.
HM Slave for Waterfall, Whirlpool, Strength and Rock Smash.
Nope, because I didn't want to mess with its EVs, nor do I want to waste my Earthquake TM for it.
Yes, as an HM slave / meat shield in battles.
I already had the Magikarp that is always on my teams.
Seeing as it was already there, I didn't want the Gyarados. |
I played the game in an odd order, so when I caught the Red Gyarados my Magikarp was still around level 18. So I used it and then made my Magikarp an HM slave when it evolved. RG became my highest level for the Elite Four at 51 before I took them on.
I don't like Red Gyarados at all. He is part of the story, so you don't get excited about it like if you find a real shiny :P
Since I started HG with a Totodile, I kept it to use as an HM slave and a meat shield while I healed my other pokemon. Gyarados is overused -_- |
Like the majority, I used it as an HM slave. I prefer to evolve my Pokemon and raise them from the start.
I always catch that Gyarados, because it's a shiny. xD I just catch it and just store it. That is all. :P
I didn't use him too much. I caught it just for the sport of it- and because it was shiny.
I mean, c'mon, who could resist not catching a shiny Pokemon? :3 |
I used him in the original Gold and Silver as a main team member, but not in my HG. I actually used him as an HM slave because he can learn Waterfall, Whirlpool, Surf, and Strength. He's like, the ultimate HM slave.
I kept the Gyarados because it had a good nature, and I wanted to EV it and use it for competitive battling. Otherwise I would have put it on my in-game team. It is really strong and also, who wouldn't like to use a shiny on their team?
I did. I felt kind of cheap for using it though since everyone uses, but it's a good Pokmeon, I think. With 4th gens special/physical split, it really got that needed boost in power.
Also this is the only shiny in the series, along with dratini and gible, that doesn't count :P |
I don't like using Pokemon I'm handed. I've only used it a few times and that was in the original games, I prefer to use Pokemon other people don't :P (Currently Slowking, Forretress, Miltank and soon Muk but that's besides the point).
But I think today the game really hit back at me because of my disregard of the red monster fish and my reluctance to use it by gifting me this http://i46.tinypic.com/29xd6yo.png. Many tantrums were had. |
I used it. I never had any good water pokemon by the time I got to it, and I sure enough wasn't going to fish for one. That would have taken some effort. :P
I used the Gyarados for my Heartgold runthrough. for Soulsilver, it rotted in my pc and for crystal, i killed it..
Depended on my team. Gyarados is pretty much always a solid choice for an ingame team unless you have a glaring electric weakness.
I used him...
as an HM slave because I'm evil. |
I used him for most of the game until he was replaced by my Poliwrath. Now I just use him as my HM slave for Surf and Waterfall.
I never used him in SS, but only because I almost always use him in the original games. Didn't help that I'd been using Lapras for so long by that point.
I boxed my shiny Gyarados in PC because I was thinking of using another water Pokemon.
When I first saw the red Gyarados I never actually thought about capturing it, I thought it was some kind of challenge for me to kill it, so I did :P and way after that I realized it was worth catching...
I used it because a) it was a shiny and b) it helped me defeat Claire, before becoming a HM Slave after transferring it to Unova.
If I didn't have a water type I'd use it, if I already had one it went into the PC.
I usually catch it when my pokemon are around level 30, so it's a timely addition. |
Well on my first run through when I had little to no knowledge of Pokemon, all I knew was that my friend like Gyarados and he only liked strong Pokemon. And it was red so I thought I was special having it.
Now I usually just defeat it instead, since on my second play-through, when i have a lot more knowledge on the games, I already have a water type. |
I dumped mine in the PC, as I already had plenty of water types by that point in the game. In HG, I started with Totodile, and I like Feraligatr better than Gyarados. In SS, I think I had a Quagsire on my team that I wanted to use instead (as I had one of those on my team back in Gold).
In general, I tend to have enough electric weaknesses as it is in-game, between a water-type starter (except in SS) and a flyer, so I tend to shy away from Pokemon later in the game that share that electric weakness. Also, I suppose I tend to feel that shiny Pokemon should be properly EV trained before use, and I wasn't in the mood to EV train the Red Gyarados when I got it, so I dumped it in my PC and figured I'd deal with it later. As it turns out, I still haven't gotten around to training it yet. |
Nah, didn't use it. I already had a water type and that Gyarados would be useless so... Besides, Gyarados' electric type weakness is 4x so thats not really good.
I ended up keeping the red gyarados as part of my main team but I rarely used it. It takes awhile to level up and it's always weird using a shiny Pokemon, especially when you prefer the normal version's color scheme. I probably trained it about 10 levels before giving up on it; my other Pokemon were a lot more useful to me anyway.
I think I used it like twice, then stopped using it in exchange for my Kingdra.
I loved my red gyarados! But I think I would have loved it a lot more if I caught it as a shiny magikarp tbh...
I do however try to use it in game or at least train it so it feels some loving before letting it chill in the PC. |
I'm an oldschool pokemon player- I played Pokemon Silver a few days before it officially was released(never did find out why they did that), and yes, in that game, I did use my Red Gyarados.
In Soul Silver, however, I didn't care in the least. Let him die. That been said, in all the years i played pokemon, i only found two shinys- and the first? Magikarp. I was so conflicted....the magikarp was rare, but useless, and the gyarados was powerful, but was the easiest and most common shiny to get.....i think i eventually evolved it.....i still regret that choice |
Back in original Gold I already had Feraligatr by that point so I used him as an HM slave but I have always wanted to see if he would be any good.
i kept in the pc in crystal, in SS transferred it to my pokemon black and ev trained it and then i traded it off
For quiet some time until I realized I had a Feraligator but these are his important battles...
-VS Clair -VS Brock -VS Erika -VS Blue -VS Red -VS Silver (Mt.Moon) |
"A wild GYARADOS appeared!"
"Go, Ampharos!" "Ampharos used Thunderpunch!" "It's super effective!" "Wild GYARADOS fainted." "Ampharos received 3472 Exp." |
I think when I first played the game I used it once or twice but then I started using quagsires and I started fishing for my Pokemon. The only reason for me using it is - hey, it is shiny, I suppose.
Nah, I never used it in Soul Silver. I did however, use it back in the old days when i played the original gold version. Funny story btw, I was on serebii looking at the newly announced HG/SS games, and I was playing my platinum version at the same time, fishing for lanturns to trade to my diamond version. Take a wild guess what randomly pops up after I reeled in my catch? A shiny freaking gyarados. I was so excited at first, but then I realized that with the newly announced gold/silver remakes, I had just caught the most common shiny in 4th gen. Suffice to say, I cursed my game for playing me like a fool.
i too had a feraligatr that had surf lol. i almost never require a water hm slave cuz surf itself is such a good water move. and as for whirlpool and waterfall well i happened to have a dratini that for some reason i taught those to xD i was hoping to make it a dragonair before the elite 4 but alas nope
he was very useful with his water and dragon moves
I never found any interest in it. Also, I already had a water pokémon at that time (Either a Poliwrath or a Starmie) I only used it as HM Slave.
No.I wanted to run though the game with one Pokemon and that was my Feraligatr.
Nah just added him to the collection. Never saw the outside of that pc again..
By the time I got to the Red Gyarados, either I already had my Water type with me or I knew what it was going to be; usually it wasn't going to be Gyarados. So after I caught it, I'd either use it as my temporary Surf / Waterfall HM slave or put it in my PC Box. After that, well, you know...
Waterfall Slave, then kept it imprisoned in a Box. :v
Yep, mostly as an HM slave, and for my Dream shiny Team, I will use it.
I left it in my Pokewalker. So I sort of use it?
I'm not a fan of Gyarados, even if it IS shiny. I'm pretty sure I boxed it and forgot about it completely. It loses all of its value as a shiny since everyone can get it.
I think red Gyarados is cool, but when I played I never used it a lot.
In my first run, I caught it and temporarily used it as an HM slave. I later boxed it since I had no intention of using him on my team. I already had a water type, anyways. In my next run, I was doing a challenge, so I fainted the Red Gyarados. I used it way more in the original games, though. I was far more attracted to shiny rare things as a kid. :P
I never used it, because my pokemon at that point were ridiculously overleveled at like 45-49 and that gyrados was only 30 so not worth the training. :L
i usually use the red gyarados for battling but only until i beat the main storyline. then i just box it and take better pokemon
I usually pick totodile, which means i already have a water type, so i usually box it too
Who doesn't want a shiny beast on his team?
One who already planned his team ^^ Anyways, Charizard ftw :) |
In the old games, I think I used one, but not in the remakes. Gyarados may be a really good pokemon and a shiny one may be cool to have in a team, but I like to have an individual team and so I use shinys only if I have the luck to catch a random one. Unfortunatle in SS it never happened ^^"
I always used him in the old games, simply because it´s a powerfull pokemon.
However in soul silver i didn´t. |
Noo. When I encountered it my pokemon inflicted a critical hit ad it fainted and fled. I threw my DS at the wall and never touched it for about 2 weeks. lolwut
No I didn't, I prefer to catch the first form of a pokemon and then train it up.
Also I didn't like using the gyarados because it felt like the game was giving me a boost and I didn't need a boost. (besides I think at that stage of the game my team was locked down, so no room for the gyarados anyway....I think in Soul Silver I was already using a Starmie.) and as somebody else stated, it's nicer using shinys in your team when it's one you actually came across rather than something scripted that everyone will get. |
Quote:
I actually did use that Gyarados,
it wasn't very good at first. But later it became useful. Though it's not a part of my team now. I never used it since beating the game. But I might use it, if it's necessary that is. |
