Which Gen had the worst starters?
I gotta say Gen V. None of them are that viable for late/post-game.
|
Johto for me, I didn't like their designs much and bar Totodile, they had not-so-good movepools.
Chikorita's line was clearly the worst of the bunch, Totodile's line is the only one with good moves and Cyndaquil's only advantage was for defeating the 2nd and 6th Gyms. Also, I hated Kanto's starters cos they're overrated, especially Charizard. |
I voted Gen 4. Not only is it the generation that I like the least, but the design of starters (Turtwig being an exception) is horrible IMO.
|
Generation V, the only Generation that I did not really rely on my Starter as much as I did n the previous games. I also don't really like the designs of all their 3rd evolutions though I must give it to them, the 1st Evolutions which are Oshawott, Tepig and Snivy are cute, but as I said, the design sucked after the 2nd evolution (or whatever you them).
|
I had to go with 4th gen. Mostly based off design, since game play wise it's an eh decision.
Torterra was okay, didn't like Turtwig or any of the other starters third evolution much. I wonder if anyone will actually vote Gen I, probably not. |
I voted for fourth gen as I don't like any of them, but for the other gens I like at least one of them.
|
Kanto or Johto did for me. Type wise
Grass- Best: sceptile/Torterra Worst: Serperior/meganium Fire- Best: Blaziken/Charizard Worst: Emboar Water- Best:All 5 are awesome to me. |
fhngikd, why are people picking Fourth Gen, this is drisgraceful!?
Haha nah. Admittedly, I'd either say Fourth Gen's (meaning Sinnoh's) or Kanto's were my least favourite starters. While I like Fourth Generation a lot as a whole I found the Sinnoh starters to lack the 'oomph', or character I should say compared to that of the Johto and Hoenn starts. Gen V's were alright, and now that I think of them, weren't too crash hot either so I'd inclde them in my least favourites for sure. I disliked the Kanto starters for similar reasons as above. |
Fifth Gen for me. The only one I really is just Serperior. Snivy and Servine, just no. Only Serperior. Emboar is ok, but not great.
|
Anything past 2nd gen doesn't exist... So that's a silly question.
|
Well, In my opinion, Gen. 3 AND 4 had bad starters, so I just voted for Gen. 4
I should've voted for Gen. 3 since that's the catalyst Nintendo drew for Fire/Fighting starters. Excluding Treecko. He was cool :3 |
Obviously Gen V since Samurott's the only starter who is decent, but it has the stats a generic Water type. Serperior severely lacks coverage outside of Move Tutors, and Emboar's speed level him dead weight with his low defenses (its HP and Attack need to switch for it to last longer).

I never played the Gen V games so it's pretty hard to choose. But Gen IV had some slow Pokemon, but they were also very sturdy. My Empoleon took lots of hits before going down.
|
Gen 1: Charmander is good, the other two are meh...
Gen 2: I used Cyndaquil, but it didn't compare to the other fire starters. The other two are on the lackluster side. Gen 3: I love using Mudkip & Treecko, Torchic, not so much. Gen 4: Chimchar!!! My favorite family of fire-types! The other two are more like tanks, but overall, they're still useable. Gen 5: I really struggled finding a use for any of their starters. They all have wonky stats. Oshawott is the only one that doesn't, but I'm not a fan of water-types in general. So, gen 5 has the worst starters for me. |
4th gen. 4th gen as a whole was ehhh imo, and the starters were no diffferent :\
|
I dont think any gen had "the worst" starters because its subjected to personal preference whether you like them or not. I knowvalot of people might say 5th gen might be the worst, but imo theyre pretty cool. So, I think all gens had great starters that had variation each gen introduced.
And ALL the starters as for every pokemon created, have their place in competitive battle to shine, so too think thats subjective. |
Probably the starters from Gen IV. I mean, I like Piplup, but that's it. I felt like I had no choice but to take it when I was given the choice back in my Diamond. And unlike the Gen V starters, I've never really warmed up to them as much as I'd like to. Chimchar's okay now, but still, I really don't like the Gen IV starters as much as I like the other generations' starter lineup cumulatively.
I like most of the starters, though. Some minor flubs in Gen I (wish I liked Bulbasaur more), Gen II (I'm looking at you, Cyndaquil) and Gen V (no one in particular among the available three, but I felt disappointed when their final evos were revealed) in my opinion, but yeah. |
Gen IV and V are easily my least favorite starters. I like the design on gen V's first stages much more than gen IV's though, so that's a plus for them. But, considering final evolutions, at least Infernape had a niche in competitive battling. As far as I know, you can't really say the same for gen V's starters. I ditch my starters in DPPt and BW(2) though, so it's hard to really say. But I'm going to go with gen V. I did use all the starters, and I found that I struggled with Snivy, Oshawott's line is overall a bit boring, and Tepig was probably the best of the three for me, however it bores me because we've seen the Fire/Fighting thing. Nothing new.
|
in terms of design gen 2 wasnt fussed about any of them and none really stood out and their evolutions were just the same design except pixels are added or removed, in terms of balancing gen 4 mainly because every single starter had an advantage over their weakness i mean come on it is possible for torterra can make infernape faint in one move because it is also a ground pokemon and fire is weak to ground, same goes to infernape and empoleon, infernape has fighting moves which is strong against empoleon because it is also part steel but other than that im a fan of gen 4
best will have to be gen 3 because i like all 3 starters regardless of what form their in especially blaziken :) |
I hated Gen's 3's starters. Mudkip and Treeko were good for the early part of the game, however I ALWAYS choose the fire-type of the new generation, Torchic let me down
|
Quote:
I always use Chikorita, and its always easily the 1st or 2nd best pokemon on my team. I do agree with you on that Kanto's starters are overrated. I think, when people say that a starter is the 'worst' of its generation, you just have to be good to use it. I.E. Charmander, Chikorita, Treecko, Piplup, Snivy |
The 5th gen starters seem really underpowered to me. Emboar is really the only one of the three with a diverse moveset and even then, I think it's a pretty awful Pokemon anyway.
|
Generation V without a doubt. I traded mine for a Ditto as soon as I could.
|
Hmmm maybe third. I feel like I like all of the starters pretty much the same in every generation besides Mudkip. Swampert is just ugly. Blehh.
|
I don't have a hate for any of the generations, but I'd say Gen II. While Totodile and Cyndaquil are rather good, Chikorita isn't that good compared to both, as its typing means it can't go through the game effectively, since it's weak to Falkner, Bugsy, Morty and Pryce; most of the Pokémon Team Rocket use also resist Grass.
I never had too many problems using Emboar and Samurott in B/W. |
Gen V. Designs were terrible.
|
Gen 5. I don't like any of the starters due to their design. Same goes for gen 4 (except for Piplup, that guy is cute).
|
I was tempted to say 5th Gen, but I did have a little success with Samurott, so the Gen II starters are probably my least favorite. I realized that I've gone through with each of Gen II's starters, and none of them really made much of an impact. Even back when I was playing Gold for the first time, my starter (Totodile, I believe) was kicked off my team as soon as I found something better to replace it. I actually like their designs, but I just never cared to use any of them.
|
I don't really like the 3rd generation's starters. They are great in battle and all, especially Mudkip, but their looks weren't really my type. Perhaps this bias resulted from me not being as familiar with them as with the other generations. Oh well.
|
Its Gen V for me because i didn't really use the starters as much as i used them in previous Gens.
|
Either Gen IV or V. Probably IV, because the Gen V starters are cuter.
My absolute favourite is Gen II, closely followed by III. |
I would say Gen IV because they don't stand out to me as much. Piplup's alright and cute, and I love Turtwig, but it's Chimchar that I don't like the most.
|
Based on my actual opinion, I think the 4th Gen had the "worst" starters. None of them had that special charm that screamed, "Wow this guy is cool/cute! It'll be awesome training it for a long time."
In terms of actual usability, though, I'd have to say that the 2nd Gen starters are the worst. None of them have much versatility, and their stats don't exactly compliment their learnable moves real well. |
Pffft Sinnoh.
Diamond was my first game but I still don't like the starters. :T I mean really. A huge turtle with a tree on its back...a monkey with armor that's on fire...and a weird penguin. No offense intended to those who like them. |
Forth generation for me. Mainly because I'm just not a fan of Chimchar, and I rather like all the other starter Pokémon.
|
Actually, in 4th gen I only really like to use torterra, and it's the last evolution of an ugly pokemon.
Chimchar and pliplup are ridiculous. And I must admit that 5th gen has a trumph card which is serperior line imo, so it's least worse than the 4th. |
I'm going to sound like a killjoy here, but I really don't like or care for the gen 1 starers. I think they are massively overexposed and overshadow better and cooler Pokemon like Dunsparce. Bulbasaur is just a weird salamander with a bulb on it's back and evolves into a nastly rafflesa. Charmander is really quite a annoying pokemon and Charziard is really overrated. (Charmeleon is kind of cool though.)
However, I am a huge fan of the Squirtle line. I think they are very well rounded and I like how they aren't just some sort of generic fire dragon thing like Charziard. |
i voted gen 5, but i don't necessary hate em all, i liked serperior's design, what i hate is samurott's design (doen't seem to work), i like emboar but he's lacking stat-wise.
|
I voted for Gen IV just because I've never entertained the thought of using Chimchar or Turtwig, ever. |
its kinda hard to chose really close are gen 2 and 5 because i only like 1 starter from them gens (totodile/snivy) but im gonna go with gen 3 mainly because i despise mudkip >.<
|
I got to say it's gen V, the starters were the least useful and lacked great movepools, especially Serperior which is unfortunate as it's my favorite out of the three. Next up are II and I which are tied mostly due to the single type in the case of II and overrated in the case of I. IV and III are the best (III being the best.)
|
I'm going ahead and saying Gen I. It was the only gen where I relied on my other Pokemon rather than my starter. Venusaur was alright, but the other two were kind of mediocre. Squirtle is cute though!
Other than that, I dislike the Chimchar family and I think that's about it. My favorite starter family ever is Totodile :) |
Gen IV and Gen V.
For me, Pokemon stopped after the Advance games |
Generation XXVI of course.. but for existing generations, I'd go with the status quo; Gen V. This is because Serperior has the Attack/Sp. Attack of Bellsprout and Oddish respectively(I'm not kidding/exagerating you can look it up),with Emboar, and I think I speak for everyone when I say this, it's deja vu: we've seen it twice(thrice now) in a row. I don't think I can say any thing for Samrowott and it's prevolution, but that's probably because I too lazy to keep typing.
|
I voted gen III , GEN IV is awesome! EMPOLEON FOREVER!
|
I don't really hate any generation's starters the worst, but I guess it's tied between 1st and 5th.
My personal favorite was Gen 3 in terms of starters. While Sceptile wasn't that great, it still had its uses; and Blaziken and Swampert were amazing, both in terms of battling and looks. Gens 2 and 4 are tied after that, with Typhlosion and Empoleon being my favorites out of those sets of starters. Gen 1 just didn't appeal to me much, even back when I was playing it for the first time. The only starter I've ever liked using was Charizard, and even then it wasn't that great compared to my other Pokémon. Gen 5 was the same, even though I really like Samurott, the other two just don't appeal to me. That's just my personal opinion on it, anyway. I'm rather picky when it comes to starters. |
Fifth probably. Sure, they were pretty cool in terms of designs but meeeehhh I'm just not a big fan of them :x
|
I like them all, but if I had to round it off, then Generation III has some of the worst.
I think Gen I will be the general "perfect" starter set, because they're part of the beginning of the franchise. We have a lot to thank those 3 Pokemon for :P |
For me, generation 5...
I used to pick fire starters until this generation... I saw Tepig and I abstained myself from choosing it because I didn't want ending up with a fire/fighting pokemon just like in generation 3.... I decided to stay with Snivy because Serperior looked quite cool... |
Gen 5 for sure. Every generation has one Pokémon that I generally don't like, but Gen 5 is the only one that lacks a starter that I like period. Although they've kinda grown on my since the beginning, I still wouldn't use em.
|
I think the fourth gen starters are the worst. Empoleon and Torterra's move pools are awful and Infernape has horrible defenses. The starter's move pools in gen five are only slightly better.
|
I was pretty disappointed with gen 2 starters probably because I liked gen 1 starters too much.
|
Generation IV. Pretty much, some actually look pretty weird, especially their movesets. Empoleon had 1 Steel Type to learn, Torterra knew 1 Ground Type, and Infernape has 2. Total waste.
|
This was a very tight decision for me between the fourth and fifth gens. I've used all 6 of the starters from these generations and feel that Gen V had the worst 'in-game.' Serperior and Emboar for me were poor and hard to use towards the end of the game, Emboars speed is appalling and Serperior just seemed below average compared to the rest of my team. Samurott was the best of the three for me but I wasn't impressed with its movepool. I enjoyed using the Sinnoh starters more than the Unova ones, however I preferred Unova's designs. Torterra, Infernape and Empoleon all made the game enjoyable for me and I enjoyed using each of them, so I voted for fifth gen in the end.
|
Gen1: Charizard and Venusaur were both quite the best of their types in there game as for Blastoise(I never choose Squirtle ever) I found there were better water types like Gyarados, Laprass of Vaporeon
Gen2:before HGSS Typhlosion was a beast with thunderpunch, in HGSS Feraligatr was a beast with Dragon dance. Meganium mehh Gen3: I liked them all in there own way Swampert was a good dual type, as was Blaziken (in the time that there was only gen3), Sceptile was a speedy and had a nice movepool with dragonclaw Gen4:Empoleon the first water/steel, I liked him very much Torterra the first Grass/Ground was a beast aswell, Infernape made the Unique types of starters perfect :/ Gen5: TBH I didn't like any aspect of it other then Samurot being a Samurai Pokemon.... |
Considering gen by gen of which I've liked and which I've actually used all the way. These are just personal preferences.
Gen 1 - I've usually picked Bulbasaur, for the ease of first 2 gyms while catching something reasonable on the way. I never like Charmander's final evolution. (Sorry lizard lovers.) and Squirtle... Oh god, I think this just falls to me having seen the anime episode way back then and thought how annoying they sounded like. So only 1½ points. Mostly because it's the overly hyped one. Gen2 - Chikorita line went same as Squirtle. Saw the one episode with the possessive-over-trainer selfish Chiko and ditched the leafy dinosaur from my lists. Cyndaquil... well it was pure fire type, it had a cutesy bandwagon, but I didn't like final evo. Totodile I just thought was and enormous troll until I used it on my recent playthrough on HG. Ice Fang (later on Avalanche) and Crunch. 2½ points I guess. Gen3 - The designs were creepy to me at the beginning. I only really liked Treecko line, because Pursuit. One of the few grass pokemon that I actually liked by looks. Torchic is okay, but I think it's wearing out on me. I've used it too many times that it's not even funny. Mudkip. All the memes. Everywhere. 1½ points. Gen4 - Turtels. I had thought of using a grass starter at first, but then I went an looked at the stats/moves. So slow at start. ;_; So derpy face. Chimchar and Piplup are tied to me, since I used both on my first ever Diamond game (got the penguin from a trade). Both had their strong points, but the Piplup line survived more in my gaming. 1½ points. Gen5 - I like using Snivy line. I don't find it really cripling. I'm just patiently waiting for a Contrary Snivy to be released officially. Yes, just for in-game use. I don't do competitive. I used Oshawott on my first game. It was nice, some what bulky to basically solo my E4 tries. I've yet to use Tepig. The design just puts me off. Not to mention the third Fire/Fight typing... 2½ points. |
Gen 5 ruined it for me, Sloppy pokemon, Unimaginative ideas.... Ew...
|
I guess Unova. Although Johto is a very close runner-up. In both cases, I didn't really like ANY of the final evolutions in terms of their designs, stats and movepools. But I didn't dislike Typholosion in comparison to the others, so that marginally pushes the Johto starters over the edge.
|
Unpopular opinion here: I think Gen I did. Gen I, as a whole, wasn't that great in terms of Pokemon - most were just existing animals with contrived elemental motifs (or, worse, without them) and didn't seem that creatively designed. The starters, of course, were no exception. They all had similar-looking faces, which was a little eerie.
I'm surprised that Gen II is getting so many votes and Gen III so few. |
Gen 2. I did not like the starters very well in that Gen. The only starters I like are Charizard, all 3 3rd gen, Empoleon, and all 3 5th Gen. Not counting Pignite. I really hate Pignite.
|
I really can't speak for IV and V. Personally, I think most of the Pokemon from both suffer from being too convoluted in design (5 moreso). That'd be enough to vote 'em down, but I won't do that.
So between the first three, probably Generation III. They're all off to a great start as Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip, but then they each have some kind of awkward evolution somewhere along the way. Marshtomp looks creepy, Sugimori's intepretation of Combusken appears derpy, and Sceptile doesn't look half as good as Grovyle did. Swampert's a little questionable, too. That's basically 3 and a half strikes. The only weird evolution in Generation I, to me, is Venusaur and that's because he's so flat looking. Gen II only has one as well, Feraliwhatevertheheckyournameis, it just looks... oddly underfed and disturbing. The Chikorita line manages to stay cute throughout, which has got to be some kind of miracle. That makes up for Gen II's shortcomings alone. As for the poll, I'm gonna stay out of that since I have no formal knowledge of IV and V. Edit: Whoooaaa~ Okay, so I don't think Combusken is as bad as I said anymore. Camping Combusken can be cool. It's one of those "depends on the artist" things, though, which honestly can negate negative feelings on any Pokemon, thus making making "worst anything" polls an excercise in futility. Anyway, thanks to Musical Combusken, it is no longer stupid. However, I've edited the above to mention Sugi's design because it's still kind of derpy regardless. |
Much though I love the games, I had to vote for gen V having the worst starters.
Personally, I really dislike the gen II starters, but they're at least not bad. The gen V starters though - the only one that's really late-game viable is Samurott, and a lot of that is due to the shortage of other waters in the Unova dex. Emboar is okay, but it's not even as good as the past Fire/Fighting starters and has a lot of competition in this gen from other, and better, Fire types. And poor Serperior is outclassed almost immediately by either Lilligant or Leavanny, depending on your preferences. Coil helps a bit, but it's too little, too late. |
Sinnoh had the worst starters. They were horrid and not even good looking. I really hated them.
|
I think Gen IV had the worst starters for me. I don't really know how to work with them in-game. All generations have a starter I don't like but I don't like any of the Sinnoh starters at all. But I guess I don't like Sinnoh as a whole to be honest.
Close 2nd is Johto/Gen II. But they get better over time. |
Unfortunately Gen V and III. Though some of the starters get some awesome Dream World Abilities (Speed Boost Blaziken and Contrary Serperior are noteworthy) they don't have much moveset options and end up most of the time outclassed both in-game and metagame.
|
I got to say Gen V. Gen I has Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur, Gen II had Totodile and Cyndaquil, Gen III had Mudkip and Treecko, Gen IV had Piplup and Turtwig and Gen V only has Oshawott and I don't even really like it. Gen V was also the first generation in which I ditched my starter before beating the E4.
|
Based on appearence Gev V.I only like tepig and snivy their evolutions oshawot and its evolutions NO!
|
Gen V had bad starters. I researched which one I should pick, and ended up taking Snivy, turned out to be a bad decision, restarted and chose Oshawatt, still not that great. Restarted again, and picked Tepig. Still really bad, but I was tired of restarting. My final team in White was this:
Hydreigon Unfezant Krookodile Carracosta Excadrill Stoutland No starter I think that Gen I, Gen II, and Gen III had the best. Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur were awesome. Cyndaquil, Totodile (Especially Totodile), and Chikorita were decent. Torchic, Mudkip, and Treeko were really awesome (My personal favorites). Gen IV starters were good, just not good enough, Torterra, Infernape, and Empoleon looked amazing, but were just too susceptible to type disadvantages early in the game. Later on they were really good to have. All that's just personal preference, though. |
I say Gen IV with Sinnoh's starters. The design was mainly odd and not as interesting as previous generations to me, I just don't feel anything with them like I do with the other gens, this doesn't mean I hated my little Twiggy though xD
|
Definitely Gen 2. That was the only gen I didn't have a starter I truly loved. I made do with a Chikorita though. (back then I wouldn't throw away a starter) There wasn't even a starter in gen 2 that I disliked, they just seem drab compared to the other starter sets.
Each gen usually has a starter I love, one I don't like and one I'm initially neutral on but grow to like it in time. |
Basing my opinion solely on the starter Pokemon designs, Gen 4 or 5.
|
Amazingly, it's not 3rd gen.
Worst in battle, I think the 5th gen ones. |
I absolutely cannot stand Charizard and Blastoise. So I'll have to bite the bullet and say first. The only other starters I don't like are Emboar and Torterra.
|
I'm going to dive in head-first and say gen 1 had the worst overall.
Competitively, Blaziken, Infernape, and Empoleon are arguably the best starters to use (not counting Dream World abilities, in which case Blaziken and Serperior sweep the competition away). The gen 1 starters aren't that amazing in terms of stats or movepools. And don't even get me started with Charizard's best friend Stealth Rock. The gen 2 and gen 5 starters aren't much better, though, so that leaves me with design. Design-wise, gen 1 also happens to be my least favorite. I don't mind when some Pokemon in an evolutionary line look similar, but I think Bulbasaur-Ivysaur and Charmander-Charmeleon were a bit too much in that regard. Out of the three starters, I only like one form from each line (Charizard, Wartortle, and Bulbasaur) in terms of design, whereas each other gen I like the designs of many more. |
GEN V. Snivy was basically useless. Oshawott's last evolution doesn't even look like it belongs... And Tepig and his evolutions barely learn any fighting moves despite them being half fighting. I didn't really like the designs for any of them and their usefulness wasn't that great either.
|
I really hate the Gen V starters. To me, they were all really weak in some way, and I found them hard to use. Not only that, but their designs were also pretty poor. Overall, Gen V was the worst and hardest to use for me, but I liked the Gen IV starters the best. :/
|
As much as I love my Samurott, 5th gen starters were underwhelming. Best starters come from Hoenn, imo. My favorite starter, however, is Piplup.
|
I'm really surprised by the statements of some people here, guess we all have our strengths and weaknesses when playing...
Charizard for example. I would never rank him among the worst starters. I just finished a FRLG playthrough and he was probably my most dependable Pokémon. High Special Attack and Flamethrower mowed through opponents easily. I'd say that, once you get past Misty (which is easy with a Pikachu/Gloom/Weepinbell), it's smooth sailing with Charizard, even more so than Venusaur, which may have a type advantage against most gyms, but suffers a lot in certain points of the game (like Pokémon Tower and Silph Co.) and doesn't have many good offensive moves. For general trainer beating, Charizard is superior to both Venusaur and Blastoise. Charizard was also really helpful against the E4. When I needed generally strong firepower (no pun intended), he did the job well, and with Dragon Claw learned through TM, he was really good against Lance. He used to be crap in RGBY, because of low Special, but the 2nd gen Special split did wonders to Charizard, until Stealth Rock came along to ruin his usability. Still a strong force for in-game use, though. Learns lots of interesting moves, and is generally a powerful attacker. |
I think that it's clearly 5. None of them have any standout stats (except Serperior's speed I suppose) and their movepools aren't anything special either. They do look pretty cool though, if that counts for anything.
|
Emboar has huge attack and HP and... not much else really.
The problem with 5th gen starters is their moves. They don't learn anything destructive enough. The starter is supposed to be the Pokémon you use to handle difficult situations, because all starters have strong stats, and I can't imagine myself doing that with Serperior for example. It's worse than Meganium FFS. |
Gen IV. The deisgns are kind of meh, and I don't really like chimchar or turtwig.
|
Quote:
|
For me it was a tie between 1 and 2, and I agree with someone else earlier that they were way to over hyped. The 5th gen have really grown on me. My all time gave are gen 3 though.
|
That's hard for me...I like every PKMNs, but with my least favorite starters, that would be Gen 5, Unova. I mean, I've had an Tepig in Black and White, but in the E4 he was...not so good...never used snivy but my friend says that he tested Snivy, and he said her strenght sucks. I don't really know how Snivy is, but I will believe in my friend right now. Now Oshawott was the only one I liked, but I'm not a fan of water types? So in my opinion, my least favorite are...from Sinnoh! No, I'm kidding, Unova.
|
No contest. I've played them all and gen 5 starts are the worst.
Emboar - slow, frail *even with that 110 base hitpoints*, and naturally only learns 1 fighting move (which is terrible) even though he is half fighting. Smog is terrible and I can't imagine anyone actually learning it @lvl 20. I'm just so annoyed that they made ANOTHER fire/fighting type starter. It's a slower version of blaziken with a terrible move pool and more hitpoints. The 60 base speed is annoying even with flame charge boosts since you have to use a turn charging if you want to have a chance to outspeed most opponents and his frail 65 base defensives don't allow him to take hits well at all. I'd drop him for darmaniton for a physical fire type and chandelure for special. Serperior - The best unova starter in my opinion but has his own short comings. As a pure grass he is open to a lot of weaknesses but was gifted with decent defenses and not subjected to 4x weakness like many grass double typings are. His attacks are both equally low leaving the direction of moves up to the user but most would go with a physically defensive set because he does learn coil as his only natural dmg boosting ability. He can learn both swordstance and calm mind from TM but calm mind isn't obtainable until late into the game. He is my favorite of gen V but he could have used either another form of defensive or statis/support indusing ability that many grass types have. I feel they should make a push toward either physical or special attack but apparently they want to leave both options open. I used him physically in my play through with coil and leaf blade. Overall his speed and decent defenses make him a good option even if using him feels stallish/boring with his low 75 base attack stats. Samurott - Rather bland with his stat distribution and pure water typing. Not a bad pokemon but nothing stands out from him either. It's a bit confusing how to go with him attack wise. His special is slightly higher but he learns a lot of physical attacks AND sword stance at lvl 57. With a poor special defense and speed he is open to threats from grass/electic types even though from appearances he should be defensive. Should have probably been a physical attacker with slightly better defenses. I can think of plenty of water types I would replace him with once they became available. Generation 3 had the best starters in my opinion and gen. 4 wasn't much worse (I loved empolean...only water/steal pokemon yet and although he was slow the typing was just so good!). NOTHING from generation 5 starters makes me want to hold onto them. It's a strange feeling after so many years of playing to just straight up replace your starter with something more preferrable while playing through. 3 > 4 > 1 > 2 >> 5 if I had to rank them all together. |
For me Gen 1 will always be the best. Gen IV really let me down as a whole in terms of new pokemon introduced. I may be laying the blame on the starters what what I felt was an extremelly rushed and lackluster gen of pokes.
I do have to give a shout out to Piplup, he isn't too bad :) |
I'm honestly surprised that gen II got so many votes. Those were one of my favourites and most people I know agree with me haha. Anyways, I hated gen V, usually I can't choose because I like all three starters, with gen V I couldn't choose because I didn't like any of them lmao.
|
Can I retract my vote and pick gen VI now?
|
Gen 6 ofcourse did you look at those
they look like digimons for gods sake |
HOENN HOENN HOENN.
I didn't like any of their starters. I remember when I got Sapphire as a child, it was when I first discovered I could just trash my starter Pokemon. I hated all of them. It was the first time I saw ugly starters, and I never again had high hopes for them- and I was never pleasantly surprised. The designs never got worse than Gen III, but they didn't get much better. Chimchar and Oshawott were fairly cute, but their final stages were nearly as ugly as the Hoenn starters'. Johto were my favorite. The only generation where I couldn't decide which one I liked best because I loved them all. I initially decided Cyndaquil to be my starter on my Crystal, but when I got Soulsilver where Ninetales was available I chose Totodile. Chikorita was a bad choice because of the first gym and the Sprout Tower. Anyhow, Cyndaquil is my favorite starter because Typhlosion is the only final starter stage I truly love. (My opinions are solely on the design. If we are talking stats, I think Unova was worst.) |
I think Johto... Chikorita is pretty bad compared to the others, and it was also bad against the gym leaders and team rocket.
|
Gen V by far. It's the only one where I've thought "these are all awful..."
|
Gen II, the designs really aren't that great, there're much better Fire, Water, and Grass types to choose from. I was never too fond of Johto anyway.
Somehow, I knew Gen V would have the most votes. |
Maybe Gen 4 even though Chimchar's really the only one I'm not as keen on in that generation.
|
For me, based solely on design, I'd say Gen V is the worst. I like Tepig and Dewott...and that's it. Serperior is ok, but nothing great. Every other generation had at least two awesome final stages and at least one evolution line that I liked all the way through. Gen V just doesn't compare.
|
Easily Generation V. Bad pure-Water and pure-Grass starters and yet another Fire/Fighting? Yeah, I think I'll pass.
|
Gen 2. Meganium is so bad that it outclasses entire generations on its own. Its level of uselessness has always been a gathering point for my disappointment over the years. Chikorita looks good because it gets Razor Leaf early, but then SURPRISE! Nothing. You could waste some TMs on it, I guess, but why do that? Why give it a good attack like Earthquake when you could get more use from a Quagsire? There is absolutely no merit in choosing Chikorita.
|
Gen V is the worst yet doesn't mean they were bad serperior and samurott were pretty cool em boar sucked we do not need any more fire / fighting starters and dewott and samurott should of been water/fighting but idk torterra might of been the worst starter ever and he's still one of my favs p.s chespen might win worst starter if his evols aren't cool

The Kanto starters... I suppose Wartortle lacked in enthusiasm, and Bulbasaur doesn't look like it has a nose, yet in the 3rd gen, May's Bulbasaur actually jumps into a passing truck full of flowers just to smell them. Charmander is one of my favorites, although I kinda wish Charizard's face would be much more decent, especially those horns on its head.
Kanto. Wartortle just looks like a larger Squirtle with sharp teeth, new tail, and a decorated head. Bulbasaur doesn't seem to have a nose, yet it jumps into a passing truck in the 3rd gen just to smell the flowers. Charmander's one of my favorites, but I wish Charizard's face was a little less scary and had neater horns(or whatever those things are on his head). |
I voted gen 4. I was gonna pick 5 but I realized that I like a full evolution line of starter pokes (oshawott).
The only starter of gen 4 was torterra. Not turtwig or grovyle. Although infernape looks pretty decent, I've never used it. |
