dragonfly_dust January 25th, 2013 1:27 PM

1st gen: Basic and average in stats but overall good design throughout the evolutions. Bulbasaur is my fav out of the three.

2nd gen: Once again average in stat but great in design. I used all three starters at one point or another and they all work well in-game but not useful beyond that.

3rd gen: Oh dear...Blaziken stats and movepool sucked. Worse in-game, it was either getting a fire starter or getting a Camerupt. That sucked even more. Sceptile was outright forgettable. Swampert's typing however saved this generation. Only have to worry about Grass types? YES!

4th gen: Between Torterra's tank abilities to mow down electric and ground types, Inferape's movepool being suited to stat strengths, and Empoleon's large list resistance as well as immunity to poison...THESE WERE THE BEST STARTERS EVER!

5th gen: ...Why did you screw it up, Game Freak? Serperior's stats and movepool makes it pathetic for combat. Emboar's defense makes it a joke to use. Samurott is...just ok. Nothing special...and their designs are horrible! WORST STARTERS EVER!

RedWing January 25th, 2013 2:39 PM

I don't really dislike any of the starters. I've used them all (Literally, all) of them at one point in time and I've grown to be attached to all of them.

Design-wise, however, Gen II was the most bland. I love Johto, Cydnaquil, Chikorita, and Totodile, but they just didn't stand out among the others.

Boilurn January 26th, 2013 8:18 PM

In my opinion, Gen. II captures my vote. I don't like Chikorita's movepool or Cyndaquil's looks. I don't mind Totodile, (And therefore, I'd always go for him since I like Water-type starters), but really, bland typings for fully evolved starters don't interest me.

Corvus of the Black Night January 26th, 2013 8:24 PM

I can't stand Gen IV's starters, although I tolerate Piplup. I mean, they just seemed really boring to me. Oh, a turtle with a leaf on his head... a monkey with a fire on his butt. Jeez.

KungFuPurp January 26th, 2013 8:41 PM

Wow for me its obvious 3rd GEN. They had terrible stats, movepool and poor design. i mean who gets excited to use Treecko,Torchic, or Mudkip. I really only somewhat liked Blaziken & Swamperts designs but other than that to me it was very easily the WORST EVER!

I can't see how everyone one thinks 5th Gen was the worst, Samurott (Water type with Ninja abilities is awesome) although i didn't care for either Design's of Oshawott, Tepig & Snivy i did like Samurott,Pignite,Emboar. (Hated Snivy and it's evolutions)

C_r_e_a_m_p_u_f_f January 26th, 2013 8:44 PM

Actually, I'm not that much of a competitive battle type fellow, so even though they had good stats and movepools, I disliked Johto because there were NO dual types. And I'm a HUGE fan of dual types. Which is why I like Hoenn and Sinnoh's starters.

Gyardosamped January 26th, 2013 8:45 PM

Generation V takes my vote. Didn't like any of the move sets and the stats weren't all that great.

Jim Boob January 27th, 2013 2:16 PM

Gen 5 for sure, the newer they get the worst they get )=

Zero° January 27th, 2013 3:35 PM

I'm not very fond of any of the Gen 5 starters, which is why I always have a hard time choosing which one I should go with at the beginning. I've used all 3 but I never really liked any lol.

Letham January 29th, 2013 9:59 AM

Agree with most above. Gen V starters are all bad for end-game. Samurott is the only one I ever found use with and even it is outclassed by most other Water-types. My main gripe with the new starters is they just aren't anything special. Anything they can do a dozen others of the same type can do much much better.

Venitardus January 29th, 2013 10:49 AM

Gen 5. Having another fire/fighting is over doing it, and, even though i like Serperior, it had no move-pool.

Arma January 29th, 2013 11:17 AM

I have to say Gen V, mainly because of the designs of their final forms. Oshawott's is okay, but removing Snivy's limbs and making Tepig bipedal just ruined those starters for me.

In my Opinion, this generation had the greatest designs, plus Sceptile was in terms of stats the most powerful grass starter at that point. High speed and sp. attack, plus access to leaf blade made him far more dangerous than Venusaur and Meganium for me.

Kitrigar January 29th, 2013 1:25 PM

I'd have to say Gen IV on this.
This was when their names started to become ridiculous and their designs were pretty bad.
Good movesets and Pokemon, but look and sound ridiculous.

Mark Kamill January 29th, 2013 2:07 PM

Gen 5 for sure. While the designs were pretty cool, practicality was a nightmare in itself. They literally covered 1 gym each compared to the 2-3 they would in other regions, and their movesets are cramped. Gen 4 was awesome in this regard for example.

Pillowing January 30th, 2013 5:13 AM

I hate to admit it, but I mostly use pokemon on looks. And none of the starters of generation 5 sparked me, just had 0 interest in them.

halcyonic February 1st, 2013 7:42 PM

Well, Gen 2 starter 'Mons sucked. None of them were any good and their designs were eww...

SoulSilver10112 February 1st, 2013 7:58 PM

I actually have to say 2nd Gen. I like to use dual types a lot, although I still like the starters a lot, they are my least favorite of they starters.

Lieutenant Unstable February 1st, 2013 8:29 PM

Definitely Gen V -____-

I like Tepig and it's evolutions, but in my opinion, it's the worst Fire starter out of all of them.

JVIarina February 1st, 2013 11:16 PM

I don't really have one generation that I absolutely hate or really dislike... most likely gen 5. Samurott and Serperior are cool, but their movepools are kind of bland and Samurott's stats are really average.

Most of the time I go off look though, because my girly side always comes out whenever I start a new game or restart and old one :).
-Kanto: Love em all, grew up with them, I always want al of them every time I start, there isn't one of them that I dislike at all.

-Johto: I hte everything about totodile's evolutions, when I use it it never evolves. I like meganium, but only in-game. Typhlosion and cyndaquil are both ugly to me, so I evolve cyndaquil into a quilava and keep it there forever mwahaha.

-Hoenn: I likes mudkips :) but its evolutions scare the bajeezus out of me. Actually, that's true for all 3 of the pokemon here, they scared me half to death when I first started the game but hey I was all teenie tiny I got over it.

-Sinnoh: I don't like chimchar, never did never will I hate everything about it. I like turtwig and piplup though, espcially thir typings.
-Unova:.... gross, ew, yuck, spit. None of the babies are squirtle cute, I only like serperior because it reminds me of dragonair and samurott because it looks like something I'd have fun riding, like a suicune type of thing.

Caelus February 1st, 2013 11:44 PM

I thought Generation 2 had the worst trio. Typhlosion is awesome and Feraligatr is pretty cool but I don't think Meganium's design is that appealing.

Mortalis February 2nd, 2013 12:18 AM

I'm gonna have to go with generation 4. Although I don't really dislike any of them, gen 4 was my least favorite. All of them felt kinda beefy and chunky.

Fire Flyy February 2nd, 2013 12:43 AM

Gen V by far. Tepig was cute but it's final evo's design wasn't great and with Samurott/Oshawott it was vice-versa. Snivy line is the worst starter line by far. Not really one I like too much out of the bunch because of these shortcomings.

Fransferdy February 5th, 2013 11:04 AM

Since generation 3, all water start pokemon are disgusting and the grass pokemons are strange.
With the exception of Seviper and Torterra.
So i voted for gen 4.

Legobricks February 7th, 2013 4:57 PM

Out of what I'm familiar with, the second generation has the weakest lineup. I like that they're all monotypes into their final evolutions, but their movepools and stats are entirely lacklustre.

I can't comment on fourth or fifth generation since I haven't used any of them.

EJ February 7th, 2013 8:13 PM

Gen V for me. Emboar is the only one I genuinely liked. Although Snivy had the best first stage in that trio.

It's actually kinda surprising to see Gen IV with that many votes considering they're probably the best starters. They're each fun to use in-game and in the metagame they all have their own niche.

KingSquirtle February 8th, 2013 5:13 AM

Gen 1 was good. Maybe not spectacular lol but I grew up with squirtle and I had a squirtle shaped cake when I turned 10 xD or was it 9? Idk. Yeah 9 cuz Pokemon 2000 came out. Charmander is cute and I love dragons so that includes charizard. But I've never been keen on bulbasaur& its fam.
Gen 2 I love totodile so much. One of the best move pools and its crushing power and high defense through the evolutions carry against all but grass and water, but in hg croconaw learned ice fang that made bayleef and meganium a joke lol. Never done a play through with chikorita but I like its aesthetics as well as meganium at least. Cyndaquil is the cutest fire starter and I like hedgehogs. But it's moves and such aren't unique.
Gen 3 is the only one I've done a full play through with all starters. So I love all of those. Can't dislike them at all.
Gen 4. Oh gen 4. Turtwig. The best but not by much. Only cuz I like how grotle and torterra look. Chinchar. I hate monkeys. And I didn't need to see another fire fighting type. Piplup. Freaking penguins. I hate penguins. Also one thing that made these easily the worst starter is the type imbalance. I mean if I choose a water starter, I should not naturally inheret a weakness to the fire starters second type. No. Just no. And I also should not be able to use my water type attacks easily on the grass starter. I should always fear him. Not think his second type means my strong water attacks can easily ohko him cuz hes no long resistant. I usually teach my water starter ice beam to deal with grass types but due to their general lack of speed I tend to still fear appropriately leveled grass types, particularly my rival's grass starter. But empoleon isn't even weak to grass anymore -_- and infernape scares the crap outta me. I boxed empoleon. I hate it.
Gen 5 was good for starter. I love my samurott more than I expected and having access to bug moves makes him way different from others. I like serperior's design at least and I don't dislike emboar. He just kinda blends in and I forget about him.
Obviously I vie for gen 4 as the worst. Hate them. Except torterra. But I'm sure if I played as him I'd still hate him for being unbalanced against water. But whatever xD

Isseubnida March 3rd, 2013 11:46 AM

To me, the Sinnoh starters are pretty meh, even Infernape.

Akiba March 31st, 2013 12:41 PM

I was pretty close to saying Generation I and II, especially because Charizard's physical aspect is completely overused, even though its Base Attack is only at a puny 84, in which it is bested at by Watchog. Typhlosion's base stats are an exact copy of Charizard's, and the other two in Generation II were less than powerful.

I still chose Generation V, because no single starter is very impressive by itself. Emboar is too fragile, while Serperior doesn't hit. Samurott really came close, but could easily be replaced by an Empoleon.

My favorite Generation will always be Generation III.

Sheep March 31st, 2013 1:04 PM

In terms of design I'd say gen IV. I still don't like most of those starters and especially dislike their second forms, but power-wise these guys are probably the best. Sadly I focus more on appearance than anything else so fourth gen it is. :<

Stormborn April 1st, 2013 3:02 AM

Gen V was so bad, ingame and competitively.

It's the only generation where I considered dropping the starters.

GrayJM9 April 14th, 2013 8:44 PM

I think III was the worst by design.

Sirradez April 18th, 2013 1:55 PM

Are you guys kidding me?
Infernape is my favourite pokemon, which means my favourite starter is chimchar.
Gen V was the worst 1 IMO.

Somniac April 18th, 2013 2:22 PM

In terms of design I would have to say that I consider Gen-4 to have the worst starters. I simply thought them uninspiring, and not at all appealing. Most gen4 runs I end up not even using the starter which is a shame.

Demon. April 18th, 2013 3:07 PM

Gen 4 and 5 are the only times ive ever switched out a starter. On pearl i did it because i had access to a blaziken, and blaziken>>>infernape. On white and white 2 it was just because i wasnt really feeling the starters. I like serperior and samurott, so Gen IV is what i chose.

Pixadom April 19th, 2013 12:21 AM

I only really liked Gen 1 and 2 - they felt the most authentic.

Aurora April 20th, 2013 12:17 AM

I hate the Generation V starters. While I keep my starter with me every game I play, as I've been doing it since I was five, it was a burden to me to keep my starter during my playthroughs of Generation V, and I had to resist strong temptations to drop my starter numerous times throughout. I dislike their designs and I didn't 'feel' any enjoyment using them, unlike Generation IV, where I cherished my starter (so much so that I got Level 100 with one of them).

Navy Blue April 20th, 2013 9:17 AM

Kanto is overrated, but yeah still good.
Johto starters, eh. This would come in 2nd least fav.
I love all Hoenn starters unconditionally,
I like Empoleon, Torterra, and Infernape, so Sinnoh's good.
But as for V, I only liked Snivy and it's evolutions, so five would be my least favorite.

JohnnyJ773 April 20th, 2013 12:29 PM

Gen V. I like Serperior design but that's about it...

Shadowraze April 20th, 2013 2:13 PM

I think it will be Gen.2 yeah yeah people will say Gen. 5 is more worst but it's only their looks. How about the stats? I don't really like the Gen.2 starters at all.

Captain Falcon April 21st, 2013 7:46 AM

I voted gen V, cause it was just uninspired. And did we really needed another fire/fighting type?

Well, it's hard to choose because I think every Generation had good starters but treecko and mudkip were both in my bottom 5 along with Tepig, Chimchar and Totodile.

Rai April 21st, 2013 10:51 AM

Generation III. They were not designed well and I don't like their evolutions.

BraveNewWorld April 21st, 2013 11:53 AM

Gen V has the worst starters. Samurott is the only one that can holds its own and it can barely do that. Making Tepig into another Fire/Fighting really jaded me, plus it's not even a good Fire/Fighting type. Blaziken and Infernape put it to shame.

GrayJM9 April 23rd, 2013 8:38 AM

Nice someone agrees with me.

Olli April 23rd, 2013 9:43 AM

I'd say Gen V. I just like it was the generation where creativity in starters, really faded away. Except for Oshawott, they were all based on a type of animal which had already had at least one Pokemon designed for it, and there were no interesting typings this time around, especially not considering one of them was yet another Fire/Fighting type in a row, which I don't really see any excuse for. I also feel like they were less memorable than any other generation of starters, and overall, they just don't really reach the top of the list. Can't say much for them in battle, as I've only used Emboar so far, and it was pretty decent, although the worst of its typing tbh.

Eruption April 23rd, 2013 10:51 AM

Gen V's designs are so bad. In every other generation, I like at least 2 of the start lines, in V I hate the fire + water and I think the Snivy line is only okay.

In game Serperior was nothing special either and I kept it in the party but rarely used it.

Seth Rollins April 23rd, 2013 11:11 AM

Gen 5, OMG BAD DESIGNS Oshawott is a little great, but Dewott and Samurott OMFG. The others were just meh. Gen 1,2,3 the best for me. (but gen 4 is my fav gen btw)

PichuRules4ever April 27th, 2013 7:16 AM

Gen 4 had the worst starters to me (D/P/Pt). I didn't really like Chimchar or Turtwig, and even though I did choose Piplup, it wasn't my favorite. Even though gen 4 was one of my favorite gens, I thought it had the worst starters.

Sanguine May 6th, 2013 1:31 AM

Gen V, I just couldn't be bothered to actually use the starters in-game. Tbh, they were also among the worst design-wise, along with Gen IV.

Zorogami May 6th, 2013 5:26 AM

In my opinion B/W had the worst starters ever.
Tepig being another Fire/Fighting was so incredible annoying to me, i didn't like the Snivy evolution line at all, and Oshawott is okay because he gets to evolve into Samurott.
My favorite Gen Starters are definitely the Hoenn trio.

tealwing May 16th, 2013 8:34 AM

I'd have to say Gen IV, because Turtwig, Chimchar and Piplup simply didn't appeal to me at all. On another note, my favorite generation would have to be Gen III. Who can resist the cool Treecko, cute Torchic, or adorable Mudkip given to you at the start of your journey?

PichuVSLink May 16th, 2013 9:08 AM

I've gotta say gen III. Although it is probably my favorite gen overall, none of the starters really shine to me. I've always liked grovyle, though.

Espira May 16th, 2013 9:45 AM

I really didn't have a thing for Gen 5. I'm not big on another Fire/Fighting, and the others were just.. meh.

Gen With..

Best Fire Starters: I, III, IV
Best Water Starters: I, III, V
Best Grass Starters: I, III, IV

I'd have to say the best gens are I and III for starters, with Gen III winning for me.

I'd hate to call you a genwunner but you have to give constructive criticism, you have to see all the starters then judge here, not call gen 3-5 Pokemon "non-existent", just sayin...

T!M May 16th, 2013 10:31 AM

Gen 2 was my least favorite and Generation 1 (Yellow Version). Mainly because neither of the starters in that game made short work with the first Gym Leader. Had to catch a Geodude in G/S and a Mankey in Y. :/ (I voted Gen2 though as it's relevant.)

tnfsf11 May 16th, 2013 10:35 AM

Based upon looks, I'd say gen 4 cuz Chimchar is basically a monkey with a butt on fire, while Turtwig is just another turtle starter that looked very generic, maybe Piplup was the only good looking starter.
At first I would have said gen 5, as when I first saw the starters I thought they were ugly as hell, especially Tepig & it's evolutions, but the other 2 have grown on me & I kinda like them now...

Apricots May 16th, 2013 1:18 PM

I wasn't too fond of Gen III in general, so I'd have to go with that.
Though I did quite like the Torchic line.

blue May 16th, 2013 1:52 PM

There was actually at least one starter I liked from each generation, so to say the worst is kinda difficult since generally I like most of the starters unique designs.

MistressShiki May 16th, 2013 7:03 PM

I would have to say gen 5 was the trio I disliked the most. The design were eh, ok, but nothing outstanding. My fav would have to be Hoenn. ^-^

✯Shigeru✯ May 18th, 2013 6:01 PM

Only in gen 5 have I been forced to continue using a starter. I guess they were a lot more useful to me in the original Black and White when the Pokemon I had to choose from were limited. Since BW2 has Pokemon like Arcanine,Starmie and Roserade, I rarely find a need to keep using my starter. So yeah, the gen 5 starters are by far my least favorite.

DarkEmeraldRarity May 18th, 2013 8:58 PM

Sorry genwunners but that and gen 5 are the worst

Aether★ May 18th, 2013 10:34 PM

I didn't like gen III starters at all, of course I've used them in the late parts of the game, but still their designs weren't that really good for me. And I don't want to start on gen 5, those were just necessary to pick up, but not really useful to play with later.

Powerserge May 18th, 2013 11:09 PM

Generation V's starters never did much for me. None of their designs are very memorable or impressive to me, just like most of Gen V, haha.

kosuke May 19th, 2013 2:01 AM

Generation V starters are my least favorites. Simply because their designs are not good.
I really don't know the other criteria you are considering, but yeah...I still don't like them.

Amore May 19th, 2013 2:25 AM

Its a tough one, this.
Battle-wise, I'd actually say Gen II. Maybe they were good then, but in the re-makes...Feraligatr is a beast, Typhlosion can barely utilise its' special attack stat without breeding a new one with Extrasensory, and Meganium...well, it's decent defences are cancelled out by five weaknesses (All fairly common in Johto/Kanto too) and a relatively low hp stat for a stage 3 defensive pokémon (compared to say Swampert, Torterra).

Design wise, definitely Gen V. They're not bad...although its' typings a bit of a repetition of Gen III/IV Emboar looks bad-ass, same goes for Samurott (And pure water is nice after two gens of two-type), but Serperior is awful design-wise, as is Oshawott's evolved form and Tepig's (can't even remember their names lol). Oshawott itself is trying too hard to be cute.

Marvelous Finn May 21st, 2013 10:27 AM

I'll go for Gen V. They are just ok but..
They do not scream 'HEY I'M SO HELLFREAKINGAWESOME' like the other ones so. XD And I'm not a big fan of their final evolutions.
But yes, they are all so awesome. ^^

C Payne May 21st, 2013 2:24 PM

Nostalgia aside, I don't really care as much for Gen II's starters, mainly because of the designs. Maybe it's just me but they look really plain compared to the other sets.

Sandshrew4 May 21st, 2013 2:41 PM

Generation I: I really liked all of them. The designs were cool, though squirtle and wartortle weren't very different.
Generation II: I really liked Cyndaquil, and the whole Totodile chain. Bayleef was ok, but Chikorita and Meganium? Nuh-uh.
Generation III: Besides Marshtomop, I really liked all of them.
Generation IV: I didn't care for Piplup, but I actually liked all the others.
Generation V: Yah no. When I first saw them, the first thoughts that came to mind were model, pig with a diaper, and clown. I dunno, Tepig was ok, but Pignite I really didn't like. Emboar was ok I guess, but all the others, nope.
I dunno, they didn't really appeal to me.
At all.

lmcde22 May 21st, 2013 3:34 PM

Gen IV designs were a little boring. I liked Piplup's line because Empoleon was secondary steel-type. But Torterra was just a "new" Venusaur... :/

Da_Man32 May 24th, 2013 8:58 AM

Johto had the worst, followed by Unova.

I liked Sinnoh and Hoenn the most. And Bulbasaur, individually.

This sums up my vote, actually. While I don't dislike any of the starters from any generation, I found that the second generation just lacks the excitement of the others. Chikorita is probably my favourite of the group, and it still doesn't do an awful lot for me. The designs are a little bland compared to the others.

It's something I've realised with generation II in general, now that I think about it. It doesn't excite me quite as much as the others.

Firox May 24th, 2013 1:06 PM

Up to now I wish I could change my old vote. With the pass of time, and learning about different Pokemon, liking the water and fire type starters in Johto, still don't like Chikorita's desing.

For now my worst generation starters (where I only sort of like 1 Pokemon of the 9 possible - including all the evolutions) are the 1st Generation (Kanto - only like Wartortle the most).

Favorite to least favorite:
• 5th Generation - I like all 9 of them, 3 starters and their evolutions too
• 2nd Generation - only like 6 of the 9 Pokemon
• 3rd Generation - only like 6 of the Pokemon
• 4th Generation - only like 2 of the 9 Pokemon
• 1st Generation - only like 1 of the 9 Pokemon

Demon. May 24th, 2013 3:46 PM

Sinnoh. Easy. Unova is an easy second.

Didnt know there was so much hate for Johto.

spike6958 May 24th, 2013 5:38 PM

3rd Gen has the worst IMO.

Romaov May 24th, 2013 6:57 PM

I know it`s not a choice but I don't really like any of the 6th gen starters so far.

-Oops June 1st, 2013 2:34 PM

I don't really like Gen 2 & 3. I just don't like how the starters look like. For example Chikorita. Just nope.

Roychu June 1st, 2013 5:39 PM

Based on design, 4th gen is the worst.
I've always relied on my starters. Not too sure about gameplay-wise.

WHY DONT PEOPLE LIKE CHIKORITA?!?!?! I LOVE HIM WITH ALL MY HEART

PiemanFiddy June 5th, 2013 12:21 PM

I'm ashamed to see Gen. 3 isn't as bad as it should be.

Don't get me wrong, Treecko is awesome, but Mudkip? Ew. No. Torchic? Pfft. No. Here's Why:

Mudkip: Turned into an internet meme, and has generated more hype than Charmander in Gen. 1

Torchic: The first introduction of a fire/fighting type starter, which I only presume lead nintendo into spamming the fire/fighting starter types we know today in Gen. 4 and 5. Highly annoying that they can't just think of something original.

Gen. 3.. amazing storyline, amazing music. Horrible starters. When the remake comes out, I'm either going with Treecko or just going with a no-starter team.

Growboyz June 5th, 2013 8:10 PM

Gen 5 for sure! My rankings:
1. Johto
2. Kanto
3. Hoenn
4. Sinnoh
5. Unova

In my opinion it'd be Gen III. Although I don't dislike them, I just find them, boring... Its probably the worst part about Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.

Generation 5 hands down for me. Each generation, other than 5 has one or two really awesome Pokemon, and then 1 that I don't hate, but don't like using. Generation 5 has nothing that I really like

Which Gen had the worst starters?

In terms of design I'd say gen 3 - the only decent one is torchic. Swampert and Sceptile are just ugly, and I'm all for cutesy.

I loved the gen4 designs - torterra was awesome!!

Strategywise I'd have To say gen2's starters were the worst, with all evolutions being one type only (does grass/poison really count as two separate types?) :-
