The Gym leader you mostly struggled with?

Who's the most irritating Gym Leader in all games that you faced?

For me, it's Whitney. I battled her in Crystal a few years back and she beat me so many times until I used Kadabra and Quilava to beat her in Level 25 around there.

But which Gym did you have trouble with?

Sassy Milkshake December 31st, 2012 12:42 PM

I was just reminiscing about how hard Watson was in Emerald. When I didn't pick Mudkip, which was a lot of the time, I had a lot of trouble with Magneton and Manectric. Oh and he had Super Potions. And Paralysis.

CourageHound December 31st, 2012 12:46 PM

For me it would be witney, just cuz of her bulky as heck milktank and Clair with her over leveled kingdra that spams smokescreen. My starter was Typhlosion so it was more difficult.

Isasapiens December 31st, 2012 12:51 PM

Clay gave me the most trouble due to his Excadrill. Another large contender was the dragon-type gym in Unova too.

Oshamaru December 31st, 2012 4:38 PM

Yeah, Watson was very annoying unless you picked Mudkip. Also Flannery, Sabrina and Clair. XP

pikakitten December 31st, 2012 6:17 PM

As a child... Whitney xD
Now in HG, I used SelfDestruct, 4 hit win :D xD
But the one I still struggle with somehow is Tate and Liza in Emerald, I think it's because I rarely get anything strong against Psychic types :P

Hikamaru January 12th, 2013 1:06 AM

Oh god, definitely Norman.

Those Slakings of his kept sweeping my team, unless if I did excessive level-grinding.

Elite Four Grimsley January 12th, 2013 1:32 AM

I'd say both Norman and Whitney. Those normal type Gym Leaders definitely prove to be formidable opponents with such relatively useless Pokemon.

King_21 January 12th, 2013 1:37 AM

I never have problems with gym leaders

Miss Anne Thrope January 12th, 2013 2:50 AM

When I was a 6 year old playing Crystal, Whitney gave me a very hard time.

Lenora in Black and White was mildly difficult for my team of only a Purrloin and Pidove. I eventually citched my Purrloin, its defenses were just too awful.

UnlethalMango January 12th, 2013 3:12 AM

I say Brawly. Why? Because my team had not developed enough to be able to defeat him easily. I had to defeat him with a bunch of X Defenses...

Kikaito plush January 12th, 2013 3:47 AM

Never noticed this thread,

that would be Sabrina on Yellow for me, cause of the anime said only a ghost pokemon could beat her psychic pokemon I when in with a whole team of gastly.

PlatinumDude January 12th, 2013 9:29 AM

When I played Ruby for the first time, I kept being beaten by Brawly. Later on, I had a tough time with Lenora and Whitney.

Jigglymilk January 12th, 2013 10:35 AM

It depends on what team I am using. Whitney is always hard unless you have a good fighting type like Heracross. Norman was SORTA hard, but Slack Off really helped in defeating Him. I personally had more trouble with Cheren in white 2 than ANY OTHER leader. Those work ups really make him hit hard.

Brendino January 12th, 2013 9:46 PM

Because I was being stubborn, the leader that I struggled with the most recently was Roxie. My team was made up of only my Snivy and Riolu at that point, both of whose attacks are not very effective against Poison types. I actually lost to her three straight times before finally winning, and even then I refused to add any other Pokemon to my team (I had 5 by the time I faced Burgh).

dontstay96 January 12th, 2013 10:09 PM

candice on diamond... ohhh gawd my only strong pokemon was my torterra (4x weak to ice) so I tried like 342357025 times hahah

WildDevon January 13th, 2013 12:05 AM

If we can shift this to Elite 4 for a second I'd like to shed light on how hard Lorelei was in Fire Red. I'm pretty sure I wanted to kill myself or break my gameboy sp in half countless times. Regarding Gym Leaders we can all agree Whitney was pretty dang hard. And all I can say for Norman was it was a good thing I had a Breloom with Mach Punch and Leech Seed. :P

VeganMacAndCheese January 13th, 2013 5:10 PM

"Back in the day," I hated Sabrina and Whitney.
Now I don't have trouble with them, BUT Clair gets me, and in B2W2... Elesa. o___<

BlueShellBeast January 13th, 2013 5:24 PM

Jasmine typically gives me a lot of trouble, even more than Whitney's Milktank.

Meganium January 13th, 2013 6:17 PM

Lt. Surge, Whitney, and Elesa are three of the gym leaders that I've struggled with the most. If I'm going to face them next, my Pokemon must be overleveled (about 3-5 levels over their Pokemon) before I face them. Plus, before reaching them, I have to have special Pokemon to beat...or else I am dead meat.

Cerberus87 January 14th, 2013 12:42 AM

Candice was the first gym leader that forced me into a corner in years... Infernape couldn't hit Froslass with Hail/Snow Cloak/Double Team in action.

Urugamosu January 14th, 2013 2:07 AM

Whitney, hands down. I think it took 2-3 hours to defeat Whitney, what a trolling miltank. That rollout attack. xD

Seraphimon-sama January 14th, 2013 6:44 AM

Definitely Whitney. Because of her Miltank, I had to train my Dratini (from the Game Corner) to the point where it was able to evolve, but didn't evolve it, simply because I wasn't letting it evolve until it could defeat the two Pokemon that I actually fear (Miltank and Wigglytuff) by itself.

Puppeteer Mask January 15th, 2013 4:48 AM

I have a confession to make. I actually never had a problem with Whitney. Admittedly, when I came back to her, like, two days ago on SoulSilver she actually put up one heck of a fight, but Dratini's Dragon Rage shut that Miltank down in two hits.

No, the gym leader that has given the most trouble out of any of them was... Misty. Red and Blue Misty. I don't know why I had such a problem, it's not like I had a fire type starter or anything, I had a Wartortle. But that girl slaughtered me each and every time. I don't think any other gym leader has put down nearly as many times as she did.

Legobricks January 15th, 2013 12:21 PM

First generation Misty; Norman; Clair.

What I like about Clair is that she is undoubtedly meant to be difficult, and actually is.

Mithel_Celestia January 16th, 2013 4:22 AM

Norman was difficult back in RS if I don't have pokemon near his levels. Clair was the most difficult since you have very few ice types far before her town and the lack of pokemon capable of using ice types. even if you have ice types, two of her pokemon do normal effectiveness and you can't encounter dragon types without defeating her first.

C_r_e_a_m_p_u_f_f January 16th, 2013 4:32 AM

Misty in LeafGreen. I had Charmeleon so she had one heck of an advantage. Also, Bellsprout was very weak too. I had to evolve it and make Weepinbell 25 before I could beat her. No other gym was tough, not even Whitney, since after the Misty incident I always trained my Pokémon heck damn lot before battling.

wygar January 26th, 2013 1:33 PM

it always depends on the team i'm using but the ones i can think of are:

bugsy: scyther can be a real pain without a solid counter

whitney: miltank gives me more trouble with charm + stomp than rollout tbh

morty: gengar for the same reason as scyther

bw2 cheren: "pff.. now i have to beat puppies..."

*work up* *work up* *work up*

"ffffffuuuuuu.......!!!!! tepig! run for your life!"

i like to play underleveled, that's why i have trouble beating scyther and gengar at times.
unless i have something to inflict paralysis or at least one pokemon resistant to the main attacks, chances are that i'm in trouble.

but that's exactly what keeps the journeys fun and interesting =D

Lunar Crescent January 26th, 2013 1:53 PM

I absolutely couldn't fight Whitneys Miltank, her charm almost always got me and i always liked Male poke more so it was effective, :/.

Itstoppedatumbreon January 27th, 2013 2:52 PM

suprised everyone found whiney difficult, i never had much trouble with her, and i never even knew about the machop trade!
Claire has got to be the most difficult gym leader. You take the time to rain an ice type (or feralifatr) and then she comes out with a Kingdra! Try that on a nuzlocke where you didnt get a flaffy!

Zero° January 27th, 2013 3:29 PM

Clay in BW2, my Pokemon were under leveled and his Excadrill was faster than all of my Pokemon and ended up 1HKO'ing all of them. Took me more than 5 tries to finally defeat him, I never want to do that again. ;_;

Caelus January 27th, 2013 9:13 PM

Hardest for me were Whitney and Claire. Whitney wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for her miltank, and I didn't have any Pokemon that had an advantage over Claire so I sometimes struggled with her.

I also struggled against the physic twins in Emerald during my first playthrough but I don't remember struggling in subsequent matches against them.

Seth Rollins January 28th, 2013 8:05 AM

WHITNEY. THE ONLY GYM LEADER I HAD PROBLEMS WITH. GRRRF DAT MILTANK WITH HIS MOOMOO MILK AND ROLLOUT...

EDIT: ATTRACT TOO...

Vei January 28th, 2013 8:20 AM

I admit that Whitney and Sabrina were a bother, but I think Brawly was definitely the most difficult.

God, that Makuhita was a pain.

Mark Kamill January 28th, 2013 8:44 AM

Marlon. My team was properly leveled, and I had enough Pokemon to counter him, but man did that Jellicent offer me an issue. Who at GF honestly though recover on a Leader's Pokemon was smart? Sure it was fine to have a challenge, but recover made things longer then it should have.

Moist January 28th, 2013 12:51 PM

Whitney and Cheren. There's only so many critical hits you can get before you smash your DS against a wall (True Story).

Schwan January 28th, 2013 9:11 PM

Recently, it was Jasmine. I went through SS with just Espeon and Umbreon, and my lord was that annoying.

Jayster23 January 29th, 2013 6:51 AM

Whitney back in my youngun' dayze when i had no idea what to do dat Miltank.

I also struggled a lot with Crasher Wake because i used to be a stubborn solo trainer until recently and i had an Infernape which would crumble from brine and aqua jet :(

Definitely this. Misty was very very tough for us who chose Charmeleon.

Also Clay was pretty darn strong too. I figured my Samurott could handle him but once that Excadrill came out it was a whoole other story. Good thing I had trained my Pokemon up a few levels higher and both Darmanitan and Samurott were faster and I was able to pull through in just 2 tries.

Kitrigar January 29th, 2013 1:28 PM

When I was younger, it was Whitney and her dang Miltank.
Now, it's easier now that I know what to do, but I still hate her.

Sweets Witch January 29th, 2013 9:52 PM

Liza and Tate, every single time. I dread battling them because I've never got anything to resist Psychic attacks and I just generally hate double battles.

And there's also Claire because her Kingdra is a pain to take down with neutral attacks.

Sabrina was a problem in R/B for me but oddly enough not in Yellow. Koga was the problem in Yellow.

Helios93 January 30th, 2013 4:37 AM

Brock in pokemon yellow. I still remember I had to train my butterfree until lvl 15 just to beat his onix. Pikachu was totally useless during the 1st gym in the 1st gen.
