Player Customization

Did anyone else notice the first clip in the trailer where the player is standing in front of a mirror? Maybe this means we might finally get customization.. Hmmm

SolarAbusoru January 8th, 2013 3:54 AM

considering we're on 3D models now, it might be possible

blue January 8th, 2013 3:58 AM

I didn't think of this, although the male protagonists looks like he's wearing standardized clothes.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire January 8th, 2013 4:02 AM

Also there's that building that appears around the female protag in the game that seems to come out of no where. So my guess is there's a certain about of customization.

Daydream January 8th, 2013 4:08 AM

I'm certainly hoping there is. The male protagonist just looks so... Plain. That prompts me to think that there may be customisation, i.e. he looks plain to be like a blank canvas sort of thing.

Treecko January 8th, 2013 4:15 AM

I do hope so. While I do like the new male and female protagonist's designs, the male looks bland. Hopefully this is something they announce in the future.

Dillon_68 January 8th, 2013 5:15 AM

With the whole world being involved in the launch this time around, I would hope our characters would be unique individuals.

Aryan143 January 8th, 2013 6:42 AM

I think that it will be possible because of that scene but it could also be a starting scenario where we are starting our adventure and checking our clothes and other things.

mikey January 8th, 2013 6:43 AM

It's something I have always wanted in the games, and now that we moved to 3DS, the possibility is higher!

curiousnathan January 8th, 2013 6:45 AM

Why not? Now in 3D there's plently of room to implement such a feature. And I'm pretty confident it will be very well received!

Pokemon Trainer Ethan January 8th, 2013 6:48 AM

They should let the player the change the character to someone that fits the player the orginal one looks ok but plain

Correspondence January 8th, 2013 7:06 AM

The male protagonist looks a lot like Hilbert so i'm hoping there is some kind of customization but it is doubtful.

Nakuzami January 8th, 2013 7:18 AM

Well, we're always hoping for customizable characters, but it never seems to happen. The day that they do do this, I will cheer.
However, now that they're using 3D models, it could happen. They did have customizable characters in Battle Revolution, after all.

Tox January 8th, 2013 7:35 AM

The style is very similar to Dragon Quest IX in which customization is available so hopefully they'll include it. It's quite difficult to give a detailed design to the characters of modeled like that. I doubt they have any big trainer sprites like in previous games since they wouldn't fit with the style of the game. If there was Sugi-style artwork of the protagonists, it'd probably be really plain. It's also odd that it wasn't included in the video. So yeah, I'm really hoping for customization here.

EDIT; As glitchguy mentioned, the protagonist looks suspiciously like Hilbert. Also, if you look closely at the video, the girl seems to have a very similar hairstyle to Iris in another colour. And also, the girl that's following the protagonist in the video has May's clothes and Rosa's hairstyle. Extremely suspicious, haha.

Pinkie-Dawn January 8th, 2013 7:44 AM

I'm only hoping for outfit customization rather than a customization of the protagonist's appearance, because there's a chance that Gen VI's protagonist, possibly the female trainer, will appear in the next Smash Bros. title to co-exist with Red and represent Gen VI with his default appearance rather than a random physical appearance. Sakurai wouldn't want to use a customizable character with no canon appearance. So I sincerely hope that this protagonist's appearance is his canon appearance.

Kotone January 8th, 2013 11:49 AM

oh i hope so! i was just talking to someone about this! it does seem more rpg looking because it is in 3D. that would be an excellent feature (:

Melinda January 8th, 2013 11:57 AM

I've been waiting for them to let us customize our trainers. It would be a really fun feature.
Different outfits and accessories.
/girlmoment

latioslegends January 8th, 2013 12:17 PM

Customization would certainly be a fun new mechanic. =]

While I'm not averse to the male protagonist (I skipped 5th gen) he doesn't really allure me. If they can allow us to alter his hair and clothing that would be fantastic. Not saying he needs pizzazz *Shot* but some minor customization tweaks to his attire would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure she's standing in a gym; if you've noticed there's gym symbols next to her.

Utzipher January 8th, 2013 12:33 PM

I'm really impressed with the female design, but the male design is disappointing. It seems like brown hair, brown eyes, and that small town look is the trend. I'm all for customization - if so this game will be a real winner.

HeidiMoose January 8th, 2013 12:37 PM

I'm not counting on it, but it's definitely possible.

I would like to add that I'm pretty psyched the female protagonist looks as though she's a blonde. I've been waiting for that forever.

Golurks Were Meant to Fly January 8th, 2013 1:22 PM

Customizable Characters?

*sorry if a thread like this has been made!

Do you think this feature will be included in the new games? If so, are you for it, or against it? It could be seen that adding this feature would lose the sense of... feeling at home in the game etc. But, it would allow player's their originality, and be a fun new feature, especially in 3D!

And are your for similar features? (like being able to buy clothes and change your outfit, etc) Elaborate! :D

Edit: oops, there's already a thread like this! Please delete or lock :D

Captain Fabio January 8th, 2013 1:26 PM

Merged into the Player Customisation thread.

Kura January 8th, 2013 1:28 PM

That would be pretty awesome. I think the clothing for the characters this time around is really plain so I hope they have options to spruce it up or maybe add accessories!

pat20cool January 8th, 2013 1:34 PM

What if you could use your 3DS's Mii's face as your customizable feature? A couple of games have done that or will do that. I.e Mario Kart, Mario Bros. U.

TBH I hope they don't do this. Mii's are hideous in my opinion.

Dillon_68 January 8th, 2013 1:38 PM

In the part of the trailer where the Male character is running through the woods with a girl behind him, that girl looks different than the one running through the field. I doubt it an NPC because she isn't following directly behind the male, it seems to be some form of co-op play.

Brendino January 8th, 2013 1:43 PM

I really hope that even some basic customization is possible, since the technology should be able to handle it at this point. Obviously they wouldn't be showing anything other than the default clothes in the first trailer, but the beginning looking into the mirror does bring up an interesting point (or, it could just be the player looking into the mirror before they start on their journey).

vaporeon7 January 8th, 2013 1:43 PM

I would love player customisation, even if it was only a change of clothes. Especially because I thought the male character in the trailer looked to much like Hilbert. I'd be disappointed if it used the 3DS Miis, because I too think they're rather hideous.

Mama-Mamo January 8th, 2013 1:45 PM

Customization would be awesome!! This would give your adventure a more personal touch. :3

I don't think that there's enough info from the pictures that have been released though and it really could go either way.

masaru3 January 8th, 2013 2:53 PM

Yeah, the character standing in front of the mirror did hint customization. I hope we can change many things... Like hair color. We never got a blond protagonist. Racism if you ask me :D -kidding (just in case...)

More Likely it's an NPC, don't forget, in D/P/Pt, HG/SS and B2/W2, NPC's could follow you, heck, in the gen 4 games you had at least 5 NPCs who could do so, so doubt it's co-op.

BanditThePikachu January 8th, 2013 3:22 PM

I sure hope your character is customize-able! It would definitely enhance the experience for me.

diamondmutt1111 January 8th, 2013 3:31 PM

If customization is possible: WOOHOO!

If not: Meh, I can deal with it.

Syncai January 8th, 2013 6:01 PM

I have my doubts, but I really do hope they implent such a feature! It would really make the character feel more unique to the player.

TaichiWind January 9th, 2013 10:37 AM

GUYS.
IT'S PROBABLE

Rou.Tsuki January 9th, 2013 10:42 AM

That would be cool to be able to customize the main characters.

It would be even more interesting if they used the Mii you create on the 3DS for your main. I guess this would really make it custom.

Jellicent♀ January 9th, 2013 10:52 AM

I really hope that they make this a new feature. I'd be so amazing. not JUST sunglasses or accessories, either. Jackets, shirts, pants, shoes, hats, etc etc. I'd have so much fun with it. <3

Livewire January 9th, 2013 10:56 AM

I'd take it a step further and wish for physical changes to the character - hair color, eye color, height, weight, etc. I'd make it look like me, which would be pretty damn cool I think.

PokeTeckers January 9th, 2013 10:58 AM

I really believer they will let us customize.

Perhaps they will let us choose different clothes attires that were previously seen in the older games. Like the different hats and vests, as well as colors. I hope so.

TaichiWind January 9th, 2013 11:18 AM

People over at Nuzlocke seem to hope to make it Mii-compatible.

Personally, I pray to Arceus they don't.

My character would be scary as hell then if it looked like my Mii x.x

Miss Doronjo January 9th, 2013 11:28 AM

I'd love an implementation like this~!

They can also have like, downloadable content to where you can get accessories, clothing, different shades of colors... or maybe better yet, they can have cameo wear, like May's bandanna, or Blue's Spiky Hair, orrrrr Red's hat?

That would be WAY too over-board. I agree.

Platinum Lucario January 9th, 2013 6:02 PM

Being able to customize your own character really does sound like an excellent idea. I noticed in the trailer that there were some differences with the characters in some way, perhaps the clothing and shoes will be content that you'll be able to send though StreetPass.

Pretty much most of us noticed that the male character was using rollerblades, maybe they might be part of the customization of your character's shoes? That would be so cool. x3

Sydian January 9th, 2013 6:07 PM

I wouldn't utilize this really, haha. I think the girl looks cute the way she is. The boy just needs a complete redesign though. He looks...a tad familiar. :P

pikakitten January 10th, 2013 12:22 AM

That'd be cool especially since he looks like Hilbert with the colors, I'd dress him up with a black beret, black shirt, blue/black pants, black dress shoes, make him look like me xD I wear black too much, plus I want a beret if I'm going to explore what looks like France xD

LapLace1500 January 10th, 2013 9:22 AM

Having customization for the protagonists would actually be very nice. I'm ok with how the female protagonist looks like already, she's really cute, but having more customization options like clothing would make the game a lot more fun. I don't know how but yeah :D

Relith January 10th, 2013 9:26 AM

At the very least, we should be able to change the colors of the outfit.

Bluerang1 January 10th, 2013 9:30 AM

I need this. I can't deal with either character I'm extremely disappointed. Like the guy is wearing a blue jacket on jeans, block colors, eww!

Elite Four Lucian January 10th, 2013 9:41 AM

Kayla and I were talking about this the other day...

Usually when we see some sort of supposed hint in a trailer that could lead to something we want, in which the case here is Customization. The trailer shows the male trainer looking into a mirror, this gives people the poor misconception it means we will have customization, but that may or may not be the case, we can't use this one thing to say that we may have customization, I mean don't get me wrong, but i hope this means we get customization, but I doubt it...

skyluigi2 January 10th, 2013 9:47 AM

I'm not sure if this has already been posted, but in the rope-swinging part of the trailer, you can see (if you look at the spot where the character jumps from) floating glasses.
While this may be a glitch, it does seem to show that the glasses and character are separate models so to speak; therefore possibly indicating that customisation is possible.

XerX January 10th, 2013 9:47 AM

I do hope this happens. It would be really neat to customize your own character and seeing other people's designs for their character.

Eucliffe January 10th, 2013 9:54 AM

What could be done is you start with default clothes, which can be considered the "canon" appearance. And then as you go through the game you can acquire more pieces of clothing to customize your character with. And heck, they could even just make it so that, later on, you could change the color scheme of the clothes.

So, that said, I would love to see customization, even if it's simple as just changing the color scheme or if they let you acquire more articles of clothing and whatnot. And, like people said, the mirror seems like it could be hinting toward such, so I hope that's the case!

BrandoSheriff January 10th, 2013 11:27 AM

IMO, the opportunity for player customization has been long overdue. xD
I was thinking of something like Battle Revolution's customization (skin color and stuff like that), and as you adventure, you can get/buy more things to dress your character up with, and there would be "special" clothing (like what you get for beating Colosseum masters in PBR) you can get from maybe Gym Leaders or certain characters. The Pokemon Centers could also have a "changing room" where you put things on.

Online, it would use these appearances, instead of an NPC Trainer sprite like that of the past games.

Oryx January 10th, 2013 11:38 AM

What if they involved this with whatever new minigame they have - you can dress up your Pokemon as well as yourself and compete to win :3

Skylands January 13th, 2013 6:38 PM

Branching out on the idea of customizable trainers, wouldn't it be cool if at the beginning of the game, it asks for your age and creates an avatar based on that age? So the hero could look younger or older depending on what age you select.

jfuze174 January 14th, 2013 9:23 PM

Do you think it's time for customizable characters?

I do think its a little over due I say there should be a feature where you either choose one of the main protagonist or to create your own character or atleast make the main protagonist customizable so you won't really be changing the character but you could make the trainer look how you want it ehh it's just a thought

Vehks January 14th, 2013 9:40 PM

Yes. We should have had this a few games ago IMO. Especially how ridiculous the last male protagonist was in B2/W2. If it's my very own pokemon adventure, why can't I make my own avatar?

jfuze174 January 14th, 2013 10:28 PM

Exactly how I feel it would make wifi battles more interesting because it would show player imagination on how they feel they would look if they became trainers ehh just saying it wouldn't hurt

skyluigi2 January 14th, 2013 11:23 PM

Yes, I'd say so. It's something that's been lacking from the series for a while now.

Altairis January 14th, 2013 11:37 PM

I saw somewhere that there was a glitch that the male's glasses fell off when he was swinging on the branch. This possibly means that the glasses aren't attached to his model, meaning they could be taken off or changed, aka the protagonist could be customized? I thought that was a really interesting point! ^^

countryemo January 14th, 2013 11:39 PM

Honestly I never sought after this feature. I guess now that the game is 3D, I can get into some custimizations. I was just always fine with the given avatar. Wifi battles could be solved by selecting a traner skin before a battle also. But I just hope we can get rid of those sunglasses. .-.

Mithel_Celestia January 15th, 2013 4:32 AM

Customizations could help distinguish each other's trainer. It is kind of wierd that when we do link battle/wifi battle/random matchup we are battling people that look like another copies of us. It would be interesting to let the game to implement this.

mijumaru1 January 15th, 2013 7:50 AM

Really hope it comes through, then everyone won't look the same!

jfuze174 January 15th, 2013 10:37 AM

Does look like we are finally getting it

Genghoul January 15th, 2013 11:09 AM

If there is customization, it would be awesome if some articles of customizable clothing were easter eggs from other Nintendo games. If I could walk around a Pokemon world wearing Link's hat, my life would be complete.

Bluerang1 January 25th, 2013 9:27 AM

Further evidence to back-up Player Customization is the fact that the Player isn't seen throwing a Pokemon when a battle begins in the videos. Perhaps they can't have that feature in the game because of the wide variety of player sprites...

Venitardus January 25th, 2013 9:38 AM

It would be great to have customization in these games. I would actually look different from everyone else. (Finally!!)

That's a good point but perhaps the throwing Pokeball thing just doesn't occur in a few situations and otherwise occurs in others, since we don't know if it's just a one-time thing for now.

James_Terrano January 25th, 2013 4:09 PM

I hope so. Player customization would be a good addition in the game compared to previous games.

Mato January 25th, 2013 7:48 PM

I'd like character customization to be implemented someday. I don't think it will for X and Y, but we can dream.

But it has be full-blown customization for me to be satisfied. Not just face, but clothes too!

SnowpointQuincy January 25th, 2013 9:40 PM

If XY does have customization, it will be small, like sunglasses or hat. Most people would be happy with that, even if it seems small.

Didn't Dragon Quest 9 for the DS have custom characters and a similar visual style to XY?

xDust January 25th, 2013 11:25 PM

In my opinion I really don't care about character customization, sure it would be nice but I can get used to the main characters.

ArcanineLink January 26th, 2013 4:50 AM

I really hope that it is player customization. I can't see any other reason why they would show the character standing in the mirror else. Unless it was to show off the character... but I don't think so! it would be awesome to be able to customize our character, even if it was just the clothes .^_^.

Platinum Lucario January 26th, 2013 5:20 AM

What I'd also like to see in the customization in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y is also the type of bag you'd be wearing, not just the hat, clothing, shoes and sunglasses. It would also be nice to see scarfs in the game as well, anything to do with accessories. Maybe even badges you could put on your character? And maybe even the Gym Badges you'd be able to put on as well?

There's a huge opportunity for many of those things to be implemented. Even some places may expect the player to be wearing certain things, most certainly to maybe even disguise as the evil team's Grunt or something, like how it was in HeartGold and SoulSilver in a way.

Theory_ January 26th, 2013 7:34 AM

This would a nice thing to add

Xusha January 27th, 2013 11:58 AM

I think it's pretty obvious that it will be implemented. When Yu-Gi-Oh switched to 3D models in their games, that's when they added customization. It's a lot easier to have customization with 3D models than sprites. The only question in my head is the extent of which it will go. It will probably be limited to clothing, and accessories, due to the fact most games have a canon head characters.

Yeah, I remember when games like Animal Crossing: Wild World introduced hats and eye-wear, and soon with Animal Crossing: New Leaf having Shoes and other accessories.

Because of the 3D in newer games... has given developers the opportunity to bring in more unique features. And yeah, I do think Pokémon X and Pokémon Y would be limited to hats, clothing, shoes and many different accessories.

They could also give the player options on where to put the eye-wear as well, seeing as we've seen the sunglasses on the player's hat in the trailer. ;)

Oh talking of eye-wear, I wonder if we can wear makeup if we do indeed have customisation. I mean much like the mii's, p much. Actually I kind of hope that if we can wear makeup that we get a good control over how we look and the design we can wear each day :3 BUT still I hope we don't get to alter too much, I'd like to keep the protagonists the same overall, but still, minor changes I'd embrace.

Zeturic January 28th, 2013 8:38 AM

Eh, it may be in there, but, personally, I don't care.

I really don't understand why people care about what their character looks like - it doesn't matter. I don't think adding in the feature would add anything to the game (especially since any customization will probably be in the style of The Sims which pretty much makes it impossible to make the character look like you anyway).

I'm not against it, per se, but if its there, it's definitely a feature I'll ignore.

Boilurn January 28th, 2013 9:13 AM

I certainly want the opportunity to customize my player. You only get two options to create your character's looks, which are, to play either a male or female character, and therefore, have to either carry a blue or a pink bag respectively, which in my opinion is a very limited selection. :( I hope to see at least a wide range of characters so that we can choose one that we like the look of the most. If not then there should be an option where we can choose what clothes to wear, and what color bag we'd like to take on our journey.

EJ January 28th, 2013 9:35 AM

I think we'll end up with player customization. I recently played the new Fire Emblem game demo on the 3DS and it starts you off customizing your character (of course it's the demo so you can't really do much).

And while yes this is a completely unrelated game, it at least shows that the capabilities are there and it can be done right so whose to stay GameFreak won't be doing this too?

Hm... makeup... it would be interesting to see players be able to customize their character with makeup in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Yeah something like how you design the Mii character, minus the eyes, nose and mouth.

Maybe there could also be a hairdresser in the game as well where you could customize your hair. That would be interesting. :3

Customizable Characters?

I've heard that in Gen VI we actually might be able to customize the character! Has anyone else heard this rumour and if you have and if it is implemented do you think it'll be like in Gen III where their will shops that sell clothing like how they sold furniture for the secret bases or it will start you with default clothes and you can change the colors?

I heard of it. And I really like the idea. Have a store where they sell accesories* ^-^ Would be a fun feature.

Sell Hoodies, and jeans and that sort. I might actually buy a 3DS if you can, if not i can wait for my birthday to get one. Their arent very many games out yet i think i would like so i haven't really thought about getting it.

I would say having shops, but also it would be cool if there were like unlockable items kinda like now B/W2 had the medals.
ps unlocking a Chespin hat is mandatory :)

If there will be a huge shopping tower, they could add shops that sells clothing and accessories there.

Um...yeah? That would be great...but I don't like shopping so I guess I'll just skip it. Or maybe not.

I heard this too, and it sounds really exciting.
Customization is one of my favourite features in games, I get attached a character easier and it also helps make a game more replayable and changes the experience.

I'm 90% sure they'll do clothing. But, what if they chose you to customise your own face? Wouldn't that add a twist?

That is a good idea. Maybe you could unlock items with the medals and you get a medal for choosing your starter and whatever starter you get you get a hat of the starter? Id probably get a chespin hat too!

Going to merge with the existing thread we have for speculation on if we'd have player customisation/what it'd be like.
