Minigames!

Just merge if there is already a thread but what minigames do you think will exist in X and Y? Will there be a return of an existing minigame such as Contests, Musicals, Pokéathlon, etc or will something new be created? What would you like it to be?

Discuss!

I don't want corny Musicals or Contests to return. I'd much prefer either a Battle Frontier/Battle House (much better than in Johto), or the return of the PokeAthlon. Perhaps even Voltorb Flip or Clefa(ble)iry slot machines.

Miss Doronjo January 8th, 2013 3:26 PM

I hope Contests make a return, tbh. xD Or maybe something like the movies in B2W2~

Sydian January 8th, 2013 3:30 PM

I wouldn't mind gen III style contests making a comeback. And Pokethlon was neat too. Just not Musicals haha. None of that please!

vaporeon7 January 8th, 2013 3:31 PM

I would love to see Pokémon Contest make a return, I loved them in Gen III and hope they keep those mechanics. The Pokéathlon was nice too, but I'd much prefer Contests.

Ho-Oh January 8th, 2013 5:44 PM

With the PG rating, chances are that the slot machines won't be making a return as mentioned by Jake. I'd like to see something brand new for the new generation actually, as long as it's better than Musicals. :x

Platinum Lucario January 8th, 2013 7:27 PM

For minigames... I think there will be something entirely new made. Generation III had Contests, Generation IV had Super Contests in D/P/Pt and PokéAthlon in HG/SS, Generation V had Pokémon Musical in B/W and PokéStar Studios in B2/W2.

You kinda wonder what will be the new type of minigame. Well I'm probably thinking it may be something to utilize the 3D effect. Oh wait, I know! Maybe they might introduce something called "Pokémon Missions", where you control the Pokémon to defeat bad guys and only certain Pokémon would be able to achieve something like capturing the bad guys.

That's the only thing I can think about in regards to minigames. xD

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire January 8th, 2013 7:32 PM

Well so far they've been based on forms of entertainment such as Pagents (contests), Musicals, Olympics/sports, and movies. The only thing I can think of is if they do another thing with sports, maybe soccer as that's in Europe...but the Poketholon had a soccer like game...eh just bring back the Poketholon GF!

Nick January 9th, 2013 1:21 AM

I think they'll exist.

Do I want them to? No way. I thought those things were stupid as anything, especially post-Contests (which were actually the only enjoyable minigames that a Pokémon game had, in my opinion). I don't like having to be forced into participating them for even a few minutes, like what seems to be the case these days.

*Sigh* I miss the slot machines; they were so much fun and one of the few mini games I have enjoyed in the series.

I don't really want any contests, like the beauty contests or dance or whatever, they just don't appeal to me. Something fresh and different would be nice.

So did the Nimbasa Sports Domes (altho that's really nothing). Sports doesn't seem like a kind of thing to do now after the Pokeathlon. :(

There will probably be something new since there's been a variety of different mini games since RSE. I've never really taken an interest to them so I'm not sure what else they could introduce, I'd like to see the Triathlon again, that was fun.

Our next Pokemon Sidequest Challenge is...

In Gen III, we had Pokemon Contests, Gen IV, we had Super Contests and Pokeathlon, Gen V, we had the Musical, PWT, and Pokestar Studios... Now what about Gen VI? Would there be a new challenge or sidequest or would we get to see one of these again or we won't have a sidequest this time around.

It's hard to discern at this point, who knows what they have planned, I know they want to revolutionize Pokemon again for the new year, just like they did with Black and White, who knows what is to come. It just makes it that much more fun to wait.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire January 9th, 2013 8:38 PM

Maybe we can play in an arcade, the game could involve the player using moves to fight bad guys or something like that.

Ω Ruby and α Sapphire January 9th, 2013 8:47 PM

I'd love for another Pokeathlon, but I think it's time for something new! I couldn't really even guess what it would be, but my guess it will be something to show-off the 3DS's capabilities. I'm sure they'll think of something clever and fun and makes good use of the 3D. There are so many possibilities! n_n

Like MagmaAqua said, an arcade would be cool, not a gambling place like Game Corner, I mean like Pac-Man and stuff xD That actually sounds fun, now I want xD

New Alternative(s) to Battling?

*If this thread has already been made, feel free to merge it.

Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire introduced the concept of battle alternatives in the form of Pokemon Contests, where instead of battling you got the opportunity to use your Pokemon to compete without actually battling. Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl later expanded upon this concept with Pokemon Super Contests, where you could dress up your Pokemon and watch them dance as well. Later, Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver got rid of the concept in favor of the Pokeathlon, where three of your Pokemon teamed up and participated in events. Finally, Pokemon Black and Pokemon White brought the Pokemon Musical, where you could dress up you Pokemon and watch them perform on stage, while their sequels added the Pokestar Studios, where you and your Pokemon could be a part of a movie.

Alright, so now that you have an idea on what this thread is about, what ideas do you guys have for battle alternatives in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y? Is it completely brand new or do you want an old one to return? Do you even want the games to include one, or do you not really care?

Vehks January 11th, 2013 2:06 PM

I'd only want alternatives to battling in if they are actually any good. The musical, in gen 5 was just ...meh. No real point to it. after the novelty of dressing your pokemon up in ridiculous costumes wears off (tends to happen very quickly.) what is? Just a mostly worthless time waster. I mean hell, Gamefreak didn't even bother to animate the "dancing" the pokemon did. It was just sprites awkwardly bouncing around a stage.

Now I never took an interest in pokemon contests back in the day, but many fans swear by it so I can see having something like that return for fans that enjoy it. But stuff like the musical? yeah, they can probably go head and skip those.

tente2 January 11th, 2013 2:10 PM

The Pokeathlon was one of the best features of Heartgold ever, if not the very best, as far as I'm concerned. The rest of HG/SS, in my opinion, wasn't all that exciting but the Pokeathlon made it all worth it. It's the only thing I use HG/SS for anymore; the Pokeathlon!

So, yeah, I'd like to see something exciting like the Pokeathlon return. Maybe if they revamped Pokemon Contests and allowed them to resemble the actual anime ones, I would appreciate them more.

Guy January 11th, 2013 2:34 PM

I pray for Pokémon Contests to make a comeback with Wi-Fi compatibility. It was something I enjoyed doing in the games when I wasn't around crushing gym leaders or beating up bad guys and their Zubats. With the new 3DS enhancements, I think they can at least attempt to make contests similar to the anime's style and turn it into something gold. Or at least that's been something I've always dreamed of happening since RSE first came out and we saw what contests were like in the anime.

As long as we don't see the return of Pokémon Musicals or anything similar to it, I'll be content. I agree with you when you say the musicals were just a waste of time and space. I honestly thought, "Is this the best they could have come up with?" when I first tried my hands at a musical in Black and White.

pikakitten January 11th, 2013 3:00 PM

I hope that maybe different cities could host different events, then we could have contests, pokeathlons, musicals, studios, and what ever else GF has up their sleeve xD

Arlo January 11th, 2013 3:12 PM

The musicals didn't do much for me, since there's nothing especially competitive about them. Beyond trying to fit the theme, there's no real strategy involved, and as noted, the novelty of dressing up a pokemon wears thin pretty quickly.

The Pokeathlon was pretty good. It's interesting, and there's at least some strategy to the events, but with a few exceptions, they're more about testing my skill than the pokemon's. They're essentially minigames that just happen to include pokemon.

The RSE contests were my favorites. In my Emerald, I've got a separate box for contest pokemon, who have been bred and trained and pokeblocked, and have specific movesets, for specific contests. It was fun learning a whole new set of strategies for the contests, and I like that it's the same basic concept as pokemon battling at heart, but with different uses for the moves and new strategies. I'd definitely like to see something like that in the next gen.

I would love this. When I watched the anime, I vastly preferred the Contests to the Gym battles. Personally, I find it to be a shame they were removed from the plotline in Best Wishes (they have been, right? I haven't watched BW in a while so I wouldn't know, but I don't recall Ash/Iris/Cilian being into Contests).

Platinum Lucario January 11th, 2013 4:05 PM

I'd like to see something entirely different in the new Generation. I'd like to see something like being able to do some sort of missions where you'll control the Pokémon and do attacks in real-time using the + control pad and moving around with the circle pad, it would be so much like how the anime worked and all that, but with the exception of capturing the bad guys and such.

This would be completely different from Contests, PokéAthlon, Musical and PokéStar Studios.
