Running out of room for continents?

With every generation and nearly every spin-off introducing new lands and regions, wouldn't the Pokemon planet already run out of room for this much land? I feel like making a new generstion really pushes the reality of this. Unless their planet is bigger, but from we've seen, I doubt it.

What do you think? Is this new generation physically possible, a mistake, or is concentrating on this unimportant enough to not care?

The World is a Big Place... and I Mean a Big Big Place

Theres well Enough room for the Region to fit

blue January 10th, 2013 1:38 PM

They may have used a few regions in Japan which is probably why they moved to Manhattan for Unova, there are plenty of places for them to use.

Sydian January 10th, 2013 1:41 PM

I think there's enough room for all these regions. You also have to consider we don't even know how all the regions fit on a global map, officially anyway. The closest you can get to seeing it is on Serebii's Pokearth map, and even still, that's just a good guess. Unless Game Freak made an official map of the Pokemon world, then we really just don't know.

Also consider that some of them are based on islands and smaller areas of Japan, like the regions from gens I-IV. So those aren't taking up that much space, honestly.

Brendino January 10th, 2013 1:41 PM

With the first 4 generations just taking up parts of Japan, they've barely scraped the surface of areas they could use (if basing it on real world locations). South America, Africa, Australia, Mainland Asia and potentially Europe haven't even been touched yet.

U.Flame January 10th, 2013 1:41 PM

But just how big is each region? It seems like they're basically continents. They may look small in the games, but the anime shows just how large they really are.

Shubshub January 10th, 2013 1:42 PM

They should base a Region off of New Zealand

Oryx January 10th, 2013 1:46 PM

There's a lot more in our world than the Pokemon world. Although I do worry a bit - they molded together LA and New York a bit with Unova, so they kind of got rid of the two most culturally important US cities. If they do one based on a whole country or a whole continent they'll get rid of a huge chunk of inspiration for future games.

Like it's been said, regions from gens I-IV were based on areas in Japan. Go look that up and you'll see that those aren't really that big. It's not taking up much space.

Golurks Were Meant to Fly January 10th, 2013 1:46 PM

If their Earth is the same as ours, then they have a lot of space left. The populations of the regions aren't very large, and if each region was the size of a small to medium sized country (I'm thinking the size of France or so) then they could fit many more in the world.

MudkipBoy January 10th, 2013 1:47 PM

but they're not continents, they're countries, with cities. We only have 6 countries in the pokemon world, compared with over 200 in the real world, so there's at least room for 104 more :)

Guy January 10th, 2013 1:51 PM

I don't think it's a good idea to blend reality with Pokémon logic. However, if you wanted to then just picture this: If each region is based off of a certain place in our world, then imagine the region is about the same size realistically, if not just a bit grander. Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh are each based off of different locations in Japan, Unova is based off of New York, and we're pretty sure this new region is based off of Paris, France. When you consider that, - not including the other areas from spin-off games - with what I said earlier, it's like many others have already said, we've barely scratched the surface as far as covering the entire earth goes.

Plus, you can't really say for sure that the Earth of Pokémon is the same size as our world in real life. So with a little suspension of disbelief, GameFreak can make their world as large as they wish and fill it with many different regions as they like.

GFA January 10th, 2013 2:09 PM

Heck no. Sinnoh is based off of Hokkaido. The (first four) regions aren't based on whole countries, they're based on about one fourth of a country, and a relatively small one at that. Nothing close to running out of space.

vaporeon7 January 10th, 2013 2:15 PM

Plus, we have no idea how big the Pokémon planet is. Jupiter is many times bigger than Earth, for all we know, it could be the size of Jupiter.

The anime shows that they're large because compared to a human being regions are very large. Considering that our regions are based on Kantou, Kansai, Kyuushuu, Hokkaidou, and New York state...I don't think they can cover an entire planet. Even with the addition of the gen 6 region.

Sabrewulf238 January 10th, 2013 2:23 PM

I've always seen the regions as countries, so no I don't see how they're anywhere near running out of room yet.

Besides if you were to straight up map the game regions to the real world, they would be woefully small in comparison. How long does it take you to run from one end of Unova to the other?

Paradise3 January 10th, 2013 2:38 PM

I think they have plenty of space left. Ever looked at Manhattan compared to, say, the rest of the USA for example? Population wise it's huge... It's very dense. But physically, it's tiny!! Compared to the entire country. So let's say hypothetically they made more America based regions eventually. If they were all the size of Unova, which is based off Manhattan (and the immediate surrounding areas, to be fair) then they could fit a TON more regions in the continental USA alone. Go on to Europe and the rest of the world, and it'll take ages to fill up the entire real world's contours with Pokemon regions.

Of course, that said, they probably would only use famous locations if they're outside of Japan, like New York and (presumably) Paris. But there's still a decent amount of well known cities or areas in the world. They won't run out of options. And even if they did, they could always just draw a random blob/shape in MS paint and call it a new region. XD I mean... It wouldn't have the culture and references behind it but if they did have to, I'm sure they could.

roosterman January 10th, 2013 2:43 PM

well, considering with the walk though walls cheat you can bike across sinnoh in a matter of minutes, i'd say they have plenty of room left on the planet. there could be a second planet in the future too.

Ammako January 10th, 2013 2:46 PM

You do realize that they can never run out of space as long as they didn't specify just how large exactly the 'Pokémon planet' is?
Because no matter what, they can just expand it and nobody will ever notice.

Queen January 10th, 2013 2:52 PM

Even if they do run out of continents, I'm sure they'll create brand new continents out of thin air to cater for their massive Pokemon World. They'll somehow make it all fit together. Maybe in the future, they'll create a BRAND NEW PLANET if they somehow run out of space on the first planet. xD

I really dont think we should base this comparison with experiences on the handheld, as their locations arnt realisticly sized....at all.

But I do agree there is loads of sapce left due to the size of each region being comparable to countries.

Where did you get that number from? 104 seems pretty obscure to me.

Esper January 10th, 2013 3:50 PM

We'll always have space. Even the first four games based off of regions of Japan didn't use all of Japan. There are still parts that could have been used, and which I figured would be used for Gen V before they revealed it would be based on NYC.

Now, as much as there is a lot of world out there, a lot of it is really unsuitable. Kansas wouldn't really work because there are no features. Every large, landlocked area is going to be skipped over, most like, in any future games if they stick to the pattern they've established. Still, that leaves lots of potential places to work with. Nothing to worry about.

Ammako January 10th, 2013 3:50 PM

^ I feel 104 was just an example.

Walk across town. How long did it take? An hour, at least. Now walk around a large town, like San Francisco. That's big, isn't it?

Now think of that "large" area this way; in the scale of the world, that's about an area what we would see as a room in a house.

And besides - a continent isn't a definite thing. It could be as small as an island (eg Antarctica, Australia), or as big as a whole landmass, with multiple tectonic plates and all, like Asia.

Same with regions. How small is Rhode Island? Very small. Now compare that with Alaska, the biggest state. Is Rhode Island any less fit to be a "state" than Alaska? No. Same here - Gen VI could be as big as France, while Gen I might be as big as Tokyo.

And considering we don't know anything about the planet's dimensions and characteristics, there could be a galaxy smaller than the planet for all we know.
